Today we're going to have a look at what's in my toolbox, and I'll be damned if I don't find someplace with a breeze to do it. Now that it’s officially summer, my backyard is totally inhospitable.
Although big tools like repair stands, large allen key sets, truing stands, and presses always live right at home, 3/4 of my stuff fits in a portable toolbox. As a city dweller with limited space, it’s perfect.
Here you’ll find the usual tools that everyone needs, like allen keys, screwdrivers, and adjustable wrenches just in case. I also keep a few spare multi tools on hand.
For BMX repairs I always have two ratchets with a 15mm, 17mm, and extension ready to go. These sockets fill in the voids when I need other sizes.
Here’s something that most of you should have, actual Torx bits! I know it’s tempting to jam an Allen key in, but these are much easier.
Since I do bring this box with me on certain occasions, I keep a hand pump in here for emergencies. There’s always a floor pump in my car so I rarely need this.
I also have some very useful tools in here which most riders are missing. For instance, a utility scissor, which is great for unpacking new bikes, installing grip tape, and cutting valve stems out of inner tubes-you know, for ghetto tubeless installations. Somehow I end up using the scissor a lot.
This rag is also really nice to have, and works much better than a paper towel.
As you’ve seen, I have this scale which is actually designed for weighing fish. Until I started this channel I didn’t have a need to weigh anything, but I use it all the time now to compare the weight of bikes and components. Best $13 I ever spent.
Here’s a pipe cutter, which can be used on steel and aluminum tubes. It seems like the last thing we want to do these days is cut down our bars, but I have an obsessive compulsive tendency to cut fork and seat tubes. This is way smaller and easier than a hack saw.
Some tools are only useful on older bikes, or Walmart bikes. I keep stuff like headset wrenches, spanners, and other such oddities on hand since I do end up using them more often than you’d think.
Although most pedals these days can be fastened with allen keys, a pedal wrench is a must have for BMX, kids bikes, and older mountain bikes. Usually a standard wrench will not be narrow enough for pedals. I also like the fact that it can turn a 15mm bolt in a pinch.
Here’s something I rarely use anymore, a set of tire levers. In my opinion, these Pedro’s levers are some of the best you can get. For stubborn road tires they’re a lifesaver, but all my mountain bikes can be serviced by hand now. Speaking of Pedro’s, this is the best crank puller I’ve ever owned. I bought this one when I got fed up with my cheap crank puller, and I’ve been quite satisfied with it.
Another company I really like is Park Tool. Besides the fact that they make every bike tool in existence, they have a Tech Tuesday series starring Calvin Jones. [Show clip] For anyone who wants to learn about bike repair, this the most informative and entertaining way to do it.
This suspension pump is a must have for anyone with air suspension. A floor or hand pump will rarely, if ever, fit the valve on a shock, nor will it be capable or accurate enough to be used effectively. These pumps usually go well above 200psi, in tiny increments.
This cutter will help you avoid fraying your cables and mashing your housings. When I was a kid, I was quite guilty of using random tools for cutting brake and gear cables, but this makes life so much easier. While performing these repairs, a cable puller, or third hand, will let you adjust the tension with one hand, leaving you free to operate a wrench with the other. Although this is common in bike shops, I haven’t met many home mechanics who keep this around. When working at a shop as a teenager, I grew to really like this tool.
If you ever need to replace or service a cassette, good luck getting it off without these. A whip helps you keep things in place, while this cassette tool makes turning the cap possible. I’ve seen hacks for this on the Internet, but these don’t cost enough to justify the risk in my opinion.
I have other tools in here like spoke wrenches, a brush, chain tool, master link tool, and even a cup remover, but let’s stop for a second and pay homage to my absolute favorite tool in the world; The 3-way hex wrench. Anyone who owns one of these knows how ergonomic and awesome it is. Park Tool introduced this design before I was even born, and since then it has become a staple tool in every bike shop. - Sport
Thanks for the shoutout, Seth!
I just subscribed because of this video. Looking forward watching all the content. ;)
+park tool can u tell me your tools are soooo expensive in australia? au $70 for cable cutters? bit ott?
neil froggy crompton here in south america they are expensice too :'v
neil froggy crompton Same here in North America (USA)
how many bikes you have 😊
There's a correct tool for every job, but my dad taught us to cut corners and use brute force. It's the Kennedy way.
Yeah, and the correct tool is always in your other tool box you don't have with you :)
Hmm.. would seth recommend tho?
@@andrewpoblete1141 is
Just full disclosure: This video is not an endorsement for any tool company. I know there are a lot of logos in the video, but they're printed all over the tools so there's really no avoiding that. Hopefully someday tool companies WILL pay me to do this so I can quit working and make videos for you guys all day!
i like park tool. we have them almost exclusivly at our shop
Yeah, I've always used Park. For the money you really can't beat it since they sell so many specialty tools in sets.
I LOVE YOU
that end tho
+hunter m LMFAO right that was so funny
duct tape and cable ties
that's what i have lol
Ooo noo
It s duck tape
Thanks for going the extra mile and linking the tools in the description! It's stuff like that that makes your channel the best.
Hearing that auto mechanic comment, it’s true. A large enough space for the car, room on all four sides to walk around, huge tool box for multiple types of fasteners, cutters, pry bars the list goes on and on. I need a full set of cabinets to house everything I need and I still don’t have everything to do all jobs
Awesome video as always
Congrats dude you're almost to 100,000
dude this channel is on its way to big things. keep doin what ur doin
i love his vids i can watch them all day
I like the way you review and share your knowledge and skills I always watch your new videos. Keep it up. - Don from Sydney Australia.
The best video for bike tools right here, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the upload Seth!
I have to strongly agree with you on that park three way allen wrench. my favorite tool
I recently started a mobile bike repair in the philly area. Super fun and I've been slammed. These vids are a huge help to dial in every thing I need. It's hard to remember every thing you need
great video, gave me some new things to pick up
1 thing that's always in my toolbox is a section of old inner tube and a hole puncher. I cut small shapes the size of a dime and punch a hole through it(usually a double layer) The hole is for a bolt to slide through and I use these to pad metal on metal contact points...]for example, the struts on a rear rack bolted to the rear dropouts.or the fender support screws.
that humbling moment when you try to push your way through a gate that opens outward haha. great stuff, man.
Almost at 100,000 subs! Early congrats! Also you're my favorite bike youtuber and I love each of your videos! Keep it up!
Almost 140,000 now! He's earned it :)
Was waiting for that particuclar video !!!!!!! As always great content and that last part😂😂😂😂😂😂
I really like how Seths videos start! :)
I love each one your videos 😁
Now Ik what I need to work on my bike on the go, thanks Seth!
I have officially watched all of your videos
Amazing Tool Box for various work on various bikes.
Great video as usual!
great vid man! thanks for sharing.
It's thanks to your videos that I found that fish/luggage scale. I've been eyeballing Park's hanging scale for months, but have a hard time justifying paying 65 dollars. I got this scale and it's great. I paid around 18 for, but at less than 1/3 the price of the Park Tool one, it's great.
Excellent! . Really like your style. Subscribed.
My derailleur alignment tool is my favorite tool.
I'm a neat freak, and haven't found a way to neatly organize my tools in a efficient package.
I'm also thinking about investing in a another set of dedicated socket and wrenches just for the bikes. Instead of on loading and off loading every time I go for a trip.
Those tools are lit
Cool vid. Only things I have that are unique;
-the park chainline checker (CLG). It is nice when doing odd crank and wheel combinations, or single speeds.
-old spoke sharpened to a point to open up cable housing liners once trimmed
-zip tie tool, tightens and cuts at once and trims way more flush than pliers
-adapters for the truing stand for various thru axles
Otherwise I think your kit is spot on. And I am also have a decade wrenching in shops as a kid, then working for parts as a second job once I grew up.
Good kit, mine has grown into my business and spans the entire range from simple socket sets to my newest toy my Park BFS-1 BB facing kit. The jewel of my collection is a tool I rarely use these days and thats my old Raleigh cotter pin press.
Thanks for this! I'm looking at ditching the local bike shop and doing the work myself. I was unsure what tools I need because I see a lot of tool kits on amazon, but wasn't sure how "complete" those sets were.
those pedros levers are indestructible! i've used the same pair at the shop i work at since I started and they never even flex!
Yea, Park stuff makes undoubtedly the best bike tools IMO. I have the same cable cutter you have (which isn't Park) but it cuts shifter and brake hydraulic very well. Working on your bike with the proper tools sometimes separates victory from defeat.
those three ways are awesome. My family has one except that it has ball points and it's so sturdy and ergonomic it's crazy
Do more absurd bike experiments Seth!
I like the way you're thinking
How about a trip back in time....Seth's Bike Hacks 101 the Clunker (Roots of MTB) ?
perhaps buying another Walgoose (or retrieve the Original Walgoose from wherever you sent it to) and seeing if it can be turned into a decent bike with quality parts. it can be for those people who's ONLY option is a Department store bike because either they can't afford a name brand bike (ive seen in my area on Craigslist where a name brand used bike pretty much goes from $300-$1500), or if there are no IBSs in the area (such is my case, the Nearest IBSs to me is an Hour's Drive north or east, and yet the nearest bike trail to me is only a 20 minute drive east)
he always put the best clips at the end
I love this channel
I use an S&M ride bmx tool wrap, with 15mm and 3/4 sockets, some rockbros multi tool, leatherman scissor multi tool, a valve wrench, a circular spoke wrench, patches, rubber cement, a rubber scraper, an extension for ratchet, a ratchet, a bone shaped multi wrench, 2 band aids, a sunlite chain breaker, and dat it
awesome video
I have almost all the tools you listed and then some other ones. For some reason I was stubborn and refused to buy specific cable and housing cutters for the longest time and used regular cable snips, or whatever you want to call them. I was constantly poking myself with frayed cables and trying to open housing with a needle. I finally broke down and bought some housing cutters and now I can't stop cutting shit. I bought 100 yards of housing and just keep clipping it in 1" increments. Not really, but if you don't have a pair get some!
1:53 Not to mention... Cuts straight too. Great video :)
One of my favourite Youber. Great videos, very good articulation/diction (quality of speaking). A lot of tools. I don't have so many. Last time I've bought chain gauge with 4 dimension (20, 50, 75 and 100). I would like to have bike stand like yours, but I have not enough place for it. When I'm watching your videos I always think about buying BMX or trial bike. When I was young (late 80ties) I had one BMX polish brand ROMET. Very heavy machine. My dream was american real BMX like GT or other bike. The problem is that I'm a very entry level rider and there is a lot of hard work on my bike trick's way.
CZcamsr
I recently started biking for commute, as for tools I just have a CrankBros Multi tool (17-Function), Vibrelli Presta & Schrader pump for tires/tyres , and Rockshox air pump (suspension pump). I don't plan on doing full biking mod or configurations other than the basic maintenance keeping, other than that head to the local bike shop and let them have fun tuning things up according to my preference/size.
Nice! Thanks!
I didn't see any picks, like dental pick style. Super useful for anything with an o-ring. Cost almost nothing for a set at Home Depot or you can sharpen an old spoke to make a DIY version, use cable housing for the handle. Good call on the tubing cutter, way better than a hack saw!
Cone wrenches. Also, while I love the Park triad allen keys, I also love an old HKC quad hex wrench. I use their triad hex wrench more often, but the 8-9-10-11 quad is big and spins like a lugnut wrench. Start a nut, flick a side arm and swoooop it's snug; flick it anticlockwise and swoooop it's off. When there's room to do that, it's very satisfying.
I love your channel dude keep it up
no homo
maybe a little
When he started I was waiting for 'this video was sponsored by square space'
hey man you are a pretty good youtuber your channel is fun and i really enjoy watching your videos. I hope you hit 1 mil subs and more graet job keep going that way. Sry for poor english not my native language.
Two tools I couldn't live without when it comes to cleaning my bike are, the Park dummy hub and Pedro's chain pig.
I got a Pedro tool kit. It can do everything I need it to. I recommend it more than a park tool kit.
you're all good!!
Shouts out Park Tool and Calvin... two years later hangs out with them at Park Tool! So crazy to see how your channel has grown Seth!
My stash of spare old components and way more wrenches than I will ever need
Almost 100k!!!
I JUST BOUGHT THE PUMP SETH HAD AND I JUST WATCHED THIS VIDEO :D
nice vid seth
Need all of it lol
Fucking thanks for that park tool part, I really need to know of them. This is by far the best bicycle channel on youtube.
Gr8 Video Seth😝
Thanks!
Y wrenches or 3 way he's wrenches are the greatest. I work at a shop and it's the one tool everyone has in their back pocket at all times
I like to stick the cassette tool in a vice and using the wheel for leverage. makes removing cassettes much easier.
cool tool box :)
haha really funny the ends of your videos :D
Check out the Knipex Pliers Wrench. Kinda spendy, but can take the place of dozens of sockets and box wrenches. They look like a pair of channel lock pliers, but without teeth and the jaws always stay parallel to each other. I've used the same pair on bolts from 5mm to 1.5". Puts crescent wrenches to (more) shame.
i also have a little tool box just for bike tools that I carry around, about same size as yours and about the same tools. I place bike related stickers on it!
I need to up my sticker game!
+Seth's Bike Hacks I just started, about 5 stickers so far, when i print some of my logo ill send you some.
i love your vids so much wait for your videos when i poop cause its so relaxing and can u try doing more vids with fat bikes
Jrod2766 you watch this when you're takin a dump ?
your bike is so nice
great great video
Could you do a video comparing Hardtail MTB's vs. Full Suspension MTB's, I am looking to buy a new bike and would like your advice on it. Thanks, Cam
I have a few candles in mine...makes great grind wax
watching all vids
I LOVE TRI HEX WRENCHES
Can you do a video on tips to stay attached to your bike in the air, I always find my feet leaving the pedals, and never returning when doing anything from a bunny hop to a jump. Thanks
Thanks
You should make your own tool box with tools you think are the most useful and sell It on your website. I'll buy it!
Have some decent grease and my X-Tools Essential Torque Wrench Set which is cheap and always used.
you need a set of gate stops to keep gates open. I use metric in 3 sizes
really Good
Seth, where did you get that socket rack?
I don't have a full rachet set and that seems like a nice way to keep my few sockets organized in my big tool box.
You have the same toolbox as I have omg!
Interesting, that's almost exactly the same tool set I use besides I prefer small head-style crank pullers and BB wrenches that can be turned with a usual adjustable wrench.
BTW, there is a good substitute for a dynamometric wrench - just insert the fishing scales' screw into the hole on the ratchet handle, measure the distance between the axis and the hole, calculate the resulting torque and make a conversion table of the most used ones. Then, apply the ratchet to the bolt, hold the scale perpendicular to the ratchet handle and pull the fishing scales till you see the desired value listed in the table.
Besides that I use an Owerhaul set of a ratchet, screwdriver, extenders and angle-access inserts that can be fit together in any way (my favorite one is a ratchet->screwdriver->hex/torx which is quite universal in terms of tightening effort control and the degree of achievable maximum power for the stuck bolts) with a set of hex, torx and bolt heads.
When I change my gearing I have a 1984 oil filter remover with 8 splinez that Deos the job fatally whel
My unique tool is a campagnolo made shimano crank extractor
Zip ties, chain breaker, electrical tape, valve core remover, two of each cone wrench and some grease.
Hey Seth I have a few things I've thought about over the few months I've been subscribed. Like what if you rode a BMX on a mountain trail or a BMX bike gone tubeless.
My tool box is very similar except i don't own any tools for geared bikes i only ride SS bikes. I have a large hex key set, several adjustable wrenchs and socket sets screw drivers lockring and spanners for adjusting bottom brackets headset wrenches. I've turned my garage into a mini bike shop with extra bike parts and tools i've accumulated over the years to service my own bikes.
Hey Seth, big fan can you do a video on how to pick a bike
I have 2 of those hex renches.
Seth, would you recommend the sync'r pro for cross country with some gnarly downhills?
How necessary are spoke wrenches? Should I throw them in my camelback? Anyway, love the videos, keep it up!
Seth I usually keep something for fixing the gate😂😂
Hey seth, I am just getting into bmx biking and I was wondering what I should carry in a riding pack?
I would put some chainoil in there. It's alwayd useful
I have NEVER in my life been tempted to ''jam an allen key in'' into a Torx head.
Lite Roadie you can but it's safer to jam a torx into an allen
Hey Seth! My name is Ryan, I'm 14 and I work at Retro City Cycles in Orlando. I have been subscribed for awhile and I love the content! I have been wanted to get some Tools for awhile, and it looks like Park Tool is the best option.I heard you come by sometimes and I would love to meet you at the shop. Great video today!.Please reply back at your convinence. Thanks
I haven't been through Orlando in a while, but when I do I'll try to swing through some shops!
Cool I appreciate it.
That shop is awesome, I had the pleasure of buying a bike there back in 2011. Unfortunately the bike got destroyed in a collision with a pickup truck.
And as I am from Brazil it`s kinda hard to swing by and get another bike.
+Ryan Thompson you are 14 and you work? Much respect from germany! Be a good one.
Ryan that's so dope of you working at age 14
Hey Seth you should make a how to service you mountain bike
