    Nice video! I would consider buying this as 1 - I would like to have a more wholesome / fiber including plant milk, 2 - making soy milk is such a hassle I seldom do it now, 3 - this machine looks versatile and the self cleaning feature is gold. However I have a very tiny studio apartment, it looks really cumbersome…

    cheers from Germany, I just ordered this machine ! and I'm so happy to find a proper review of it !! it just confirms my purchase XD because like you said for some reason the european nutmilk machines just aren't all the way there and I found a couple at half the price with kinda the same patent but then they don't cook the soymilk, only heat it up to 79 degrees Celsius and I'm like, no.
    I just made my own soy milk, old school soaking, blending and pot on the stove. It took me half a day and got almost 3 liters out of 500g and it IS spectacularly delicious ! it is impossible for me to go back to store bought ever again, and since the blender was a smoothie one haha I got a ton of okara leftovers and made my very first okara tempeh ! which also omg, turned out incredible! Never doing whole beans tempeh again cuz okara tempeh is so much better ! it doesn't crumble, it's like a proper patty that soaks up all the marinade even better than the whole beans one. So ironically, when looking for a soymilk machine, I was actually thinking more about the leftovers than not ! I want to still have some okara left haha and not blend it all into the milk so I can still make this delicious tempeh or baking with it etc .At the same time I cannot imagine soymilk that is not cooked properly ! so I don't care if this other machine does it in 10 minutes instead of 20 if the result is just bad .
    I cannot wait for this machine! to taste it and find my best recipe and then get started on making soy yoghurt yum ! It's really pricey, like I paid 400€ for it with the discount, which is far less than in the UK but still a small fortune. As the same time I think it will be one of those "best investments ever" where in the long run it will actually save me money, based on my calculation and consumption of soy milk and yoghurt I think in 6 or 8 months tops, the machine will have paid for itself and from then on it's just pure joy and health !

    Great review and I. Almost ready to purchase.
    I always presoak my soybeans and they take up lots of room in my fridge. So with Joyoung it is not necessary to presoak beans? Is there a difference in flavor whether using presoaked or dry beans?
    I use a Soyabella and it does make great milk, however I cannot get the milk rich enough to make good yogurt. Plus hassle cleaning, not too bad tho.
    Can you address the presoak vs bean issue, also in regard to taste of soy milk between your older version machine and thevJoyoung?
    Also anything about the richness of the milk for turning into yogurt?

  • @nikowearden252
    @nikowearden252 Před 2 lety +6

    I think they put oil in the oat milks to make the fat content high enough to froth the milk for making cappuccinos etc. because those milks are very popular with cafes. At least in my experience I can't get oat milk made only with oats and water, with no gums or fat to froth. Homemade nut milks work fine so I think it's to do with fat. I don't mind using Oatly for that because they use rapeseed oil which has quite a bit of omega 3 so it's moderately more healthy than some other oils but I know you don't like oil at all really. It's also fairly light on the additives but I appreciate also that they add iodine because I don't supplement that, I eat seaweed from time to time but I think my oatly coffee is a good back up. I guess for a homemade, more whole-food(ish) option you can make it like half oats, half nuts and it should froth? I haven't tried that way.

    • @Jana-ef4ig
      @Jana-ef4ig Před 2 lety

      I have the same problem making oat milk to froth and not slimy. I realize it's cause the store brand barista line uses gums and thickeners to froth. I love notmilk brand but it is expensive. I saw sauce stache on youtube using versawhip 600 powder to foam drinks. I haven't bought it since it's expensive. I tried making pea milk to make a homemade version of notmilk but i taste the peas even if I put lots of water and strained it. Would love to find a good vegan milk recipe that froths well that I can make at home.

      @@Jana-ef4ig I make my nut milks with a really high nut to water ratio so they come out super creamy, macadamia nuts are expensive so it's no wonder the shop bought one you tried was watery. It does not taste like milk, it tastes of nuts, which I love but maybe not what you're looking for, but usually for nut milks I use at least one cup of nuts, to three cups of water, sometimes even more nuts. I have a Joyoung Soy Milk Maker from 1994. Works awesome.

  • @tofu-munchingCoalition.ofChaos

    Two question and three remarks:
    Questions:
    1. I have never had a soy milk maker. The layer (yuba) formed when making soy milk without a machine does not form here because of the mixing?
    2. Is there a discount for EU planned?
    Remarks:
    1. One of my main reasons (also I would definitely not have thought about it wouldn't have self cleaning) I'm interested now is because in the EU the organic label makes it difficult for soy milks to be fortified with calcium. Only expensive non-organic soy milks are fortified with it. Or I have to blend calcium from alge or tablets in by myself.
    2. I feel dumb but I just realized that I can sweeten my soy milk with this how I like it for example with dates instead of refined sugar (and fortify it with calcium) in no additional time.
    3. I'm quite certain I'll buy it. I just have to make room for it in my kitchen.

    • @tofu-munchingCoalition.ofChaos
      @tofu-munchingCoalition.ofChaos Před 2 lety

      btw. where I live in the EU organic clean soy milk is less expensive (opposite to what you discussed in the video for the UK) than other soy milk.
      My issue is with the fortified soy milk here. Same problem (price 8 times as expensive as making it at home) or additional work by fortifying it yourself.

      @@EastMeetsKitchen I use molasses for ginger bread, savory sauces (veganised German "Bratensauce" and BBQ sauce) and some seitan recipes.
      For a calcium source it's a lot of calories. The two brands I have at home have ≈2mg or ≈4mg of calcium per kcal. But perhaps you have access to other sources.
      I prefer 1000mg per kcal in a calcium rich algae (does not taste seefoody) or just a supplement mixed in (water or) plant based milks.
      As calcium intake should be spread out during the day (supplement in pill form is annoying this way) that's a good option for me.

    cleaning one for 10 x less, is easy with correct brushes also run machine in cold water, is same as cleaning out afterwards. FAR TOO EXPENSiVE.

    Wow, that would be $1000 for me. 1Ltr of Soya milk is $4. 52 weeks x $4 = $208, so 5 Years payback.
