Food vehicle shelter, and don’t forget the TP, more than that it’s just a luxury item. I’m using a combination of backpacking and hiking gear and hand-me-down stuff from my grandparents. I do not buy any new gear unless the old gear fails in his beyond repair. I did get a setpower refrigerator dual zone on discount from setpower when they offered it to me after I’d already been full-time for a year.
I had one of those white gas pump style, Coleman Stoves, but I traded it to a family family member for the new style that takes the 1 pound bottles or an adapter for 20 pound. I actually prefer those old pump style white gas, stoves they work just about anywhere they’re very simple, and no disposable bottles. My family has been cooking on cast-iron for at least five generations that I’m aware of. I have an assortment of cast-iron pans now that I have a small camper trailer but for the last three years I’ve been traveling with a medium and a small cast-iron pan and a tea kettle. The good thing about cast-iron is you can cook on an open fire you don’t have to have a stove. But I can also say that you don’t have to cook at all I’ve done several cross-country bike packing events 2000+ miles and never once cooked on those trips I ate from town to town with items that I picked up in town that didn’t need to be cooked and I can just stuff in my bag and eat when I needed.
My favorite thing to say to Gen XYNZ campers, human survived for several thousand years without cell phones and electronic devices. Are used to blow up air mattresses with my mouth back when I was a youngster camping with the grandparents. Nowadays takes a battery to charge an electronic device.
Practical, common sense advice, thanks. Overlanding has gone gucci and I hope it's not putting the regular joe off getting outdoors. Payload is often neglected so good to see that mentioned. What do you guys think about awnings? They seem to be very common but add 40 to 60lbs up top. Would you ever use a tarp off the side with some poles or is an awning one of those things you'd sacrifice weight for? Cheers

For sleeping, I don’t ever leave my foam toppers at home. They are just for camping. I got them at Costco. Makes any air mattress feel 100% better.

Cast iron cooking is awesome! Good tips about eating on the ride; must have been some epic trips!
