I have a Pan that is my regular bike, owned it for 25 years, and a 78 Sportster XLCR that I probably should have left at the estate sale where I found it. Two bikes, both need repair, one lift table and a 70+ year old body that isn't going to work on the floor. The Pan is waiting to get on the lift so I can remove the transmission, make internal adjustments and install again. The Sportster refuses to get off the lift. Needed parts are coming to make the front brakes work so I can control it rolling off the lift. The Sportster sat in a shed for 25+ years, brake masters were dry and crusty inside, wheel cylinders not moving. Master cylinder was easier than I thought to clean and install a rebuild kit. Wheel cylinders are next, they are the same as yours and very simple and easy to clean and reassemble. I suggest you take them apart being carefull to not damage the rubber parts as you remove them as you can probably use them again. Clean the metal parts thoughly with rubbing alcohol, clean the groove where the rubber was thoughly, you may need a Scotchbright pad or fine sandpaper if the piston is corroded. If you haven't done it before, put the wheel cylinder on the bench so the piston is aiming down at the bench with a rag under the piston to cushion it, compressed air in the brake hose will shoot the piston out. Clean the rubber parts with the type of brake fluid you are using and put it back together, simple and cheap, save your money for something you can't fix yourself. Be sure to flush all the old fluid out of the hoses while they are off. Lots of CZcams videos on the brakes, some good and some wrong, easy to know the difference with your background and skills. I am waiting on new higher handlebars, then I can get the correct upper brake hose and safely get it off the lift for awhile.
That's a cool time capsule of a motorcycle. Getting control cables for vintage bikes can be a struggle. The vendors need to be very specific with the details, list the length of cable outer sheen, inner wire and free play. That's assuming you have a cable that worked that you can measure so you know what you need. I've bought throttle cables where the part number matches up, experts tell me that's the cable I need, and it's just a couple inches two short to use safely. Meaning when I turn the bars it's pulling on the cable no matter how I route it.

Your problem with the carb is because you don't have a support bracket. S&S&S sells them direct or you can get one from J&P, Dennis Kirk, or anyone else that sells S&S parts. You might want to see if you can also get the correct nut, bolt, and spacer. It will make a HUGE difference
Agree. Carb support bracket. There are two types. One mounted on the front head. The other comes up from the bottom. On my early '78 Shovel, I have the one coming up from the bottom and have the SS version of the oil lines you have.
Support bracket is a must. I didn’t have one on my Fatboy and I unknowingly kicked it loose with my prosthetic 1 hour into a 9 hour trip. No fun sitting in a podunk gas station parking lot reinstalling your carb with zip tied and duct tape while all the locals coming by to get their Sunday afternoon tall boys at the gas station gather around and watch you wrenching and cussing lol.
Mate, I'm super impressed that that you found all the parts for the brake lever assembly that fell off... that sort of thing never happens. Don't be overwhelmed by all the little things, one piece at a time. As mentioned in other comments, caliper rebuild and carby bracket should do the trick.
I can't believe I found that tiny spring! Certainly I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, but I definitely need a break. I'll be back to it soon though!

Keep at it bro! I had the caliper seal blow out of my 78 shovel, bought two different part numbers before I found the correct seal. Also had to rebuild the brake lines too. Im still dealing with the front cylinder fouling the plug. It's a process for sure. I hope to see you out on the road sometime on that scooter.
Please don't get too discouraged. Like I said about the iron head. You can get a lot of content from this bike also. Just keep making vidios about all the things u have to fix. And we'll watch
Did you ever find a seat? I have a number of Shovel seats, exhaust sets and all kinds of parts that have accumulated over the last 40+ years, including a couple of FLH Tour Packs and a Liberator fairing built by Craig Vetter in the mid-70's. Not exactly sure what seats that I have but I can probably talk my son into climbing up into the garage attic to look around as I can no longer do so myself. I've owned the same 79 FXE, "Bernadette", for 42 years but there's not much stock left in her nowadays- 87 Heritage front end, 5 gallon flatside tanks off of a 97 Softail, floorboards off of an early Heritage Softail, etc. Plus the engine broke a connecting rod on the way to Sturgis in 1999 or so so I built it into a 93" big bore stroker using S&S fly wheels, crank assembly, and jugs. She's a beast compared to when she was 74".
Vacuum leaks are a problem on those manifolds. I add additional sealer to the o-rings and rubber mount the bracket to lessen vibration to the carb/manifold assembly.
I've got a forty year old Honda V-4 right at the back of the shop with a duvet covering it. It's broken my heart once too often. So I know how you feel. I've got two Meriden Triumphs that cause me heartache too. Have a break from it mate. 😉
I have an fx front end with dual disc brakes on my 81 frame.... 84-99 brake calipers. Rebuilt them a year ago only to have the one on the right side blow out recently, Brakes can be a pain in the ass. Rebuilt both of them AGAIN a few weeks ago and right away after the first time riding it had a puddle of brake fluid on the wheel from the right side AGAIN.... Now all of a sudden, nothing. Still fluid in the master, brakes work good, no leak...... Maybe I over filled it? I'm just gonna keep using them until something else happens I guess.... They seem to work for now. I have a single disc on the back, never had a problem with that one. The frame has been chopped and lifted to fit an 80 Evo so I have an S&S Evo in it that's about a year old, only 1k miles on it but zero problems so far. Used a stock CV carb instead of the Super that everyone uses nowadays.... I do hate the manual must hold choke lever so I use a clothes pin on it when I start it...
First thing u should know youngon is all clips bolts screws fasteners need to be in place, tight,backed up with lock tight n saftey wires,harleys VBRATE!
My Universal Throttle fitted my Delorto and now it fits the Mikuni VM. Since I am 70 don't need instant acceleration. The Mikuni just roll it to go faster.
You need a support for that Carb. like someone previously said. Join a Shovelhead group and you will learn all the little hints on owning older Harleys
Feel for ya Buddy , don't feel alone , many have gone through the same stuff , and don't give up if it is important to you , grew up motocross then switched to kaw triples an 1/4 mile for 15 years , talk about bend an break drive that , old now an thinking of a old harley not that new shit , never owned one but worked on a few , mostly finishing projects like yours , wiring it sorting the carb , cables ect ... never wanted a bike i couldn't jump over the bars an the car just pulled in front of me before but think being old an can't jump might as well sit there an sound good till the crash so getting a harley like yours i think , Thx for the vid
Rebuild your brake calipers, the seals are most likely worn out. They may not leak but the seals are actually what pulls the caliper pistons back into place

I honestly know exactly what you are going through. I just picked up a 66 rigid Triumph. It seems the quality of aftermarket parts from England are nice quality
Just a heads up man, that's a evo backing plate and not a shovelhead backing plate. There are 2 ways to stabilize the carb. To the head or to the center case bolt. Keep plugging away man. It'll come together
You need to have a carb support! Your Ironhead probably has one, right? ...It had better! The weight of the carb leaning off the side of the engine, bumps & gravity won`t only cause an air leak, but the entire carb can end up in the road to get run over by the pickup truck behind you! (Not to mention the potential FIRE from gas pouring on the hot engine) You want the S&S rubber band intake gaskets WITH their heavy duty clamps! Head up, never give up!

Hi mate if helps when covid hit I was fitting ape hangers on my shovelhead couldn't get throttle cable I needed so made one out of twin cam cable soldering end on perfect then as went fit it arc cable on battery it lit up red and melted inner cable and ends dropped off 🤣🤣🤣 I stood there in silence 😅
Are you sure you don't have an AMF? A buddy and me worked on his AMF for months trying to get it right. Which we never did, close but no cigar. Even setting everything to factory specs it wasn't right. I own Harleys before and after the AMF years but not during.
Well if you are tired of messin with it, I'll give you $500.00 for it and I will come get it. Ok, now hopefully that will put some oil back in his crankcase and he'll get back to work on it. There are millions of old men like me that would love to have a shovelhead. No more whining.

I hope you did not put DOT5 silecone in it, that will give you massive leaks arround the seals, you need dot4, I made the same mistake with my 1980 Shovelhead
@@buttcrackcycles mine says dot3, but you can also use dot4, I made the mistake of putting dot5 silecone in it, massive leaks from the brake handle, could not understand why untill I discovered that dot3 and 4 react with the seals and make it expand, dot5 silecone does not do that and therefore causes leaks, so if it starts leaking you know why
Sometimes you have to walk away from a project for a little while knowing you'll start back on it later. There's plenty of newer videos about this bike, I worked on it yesterday actually.
Haven't gotten to the frame crack yet, on the list, need to needle scale the bondo off. New master cylinder was shipped that way with the E clip, maybe I'll try to "upgrade" it to a snap ring
@@buttcrackcycles l see so part came like that, assembled with (you summise) the E clip not seated. Is it not possible to make a shouldered threaded bolt and loctite a nut on? As for the welding l would carefully grind away to the parent metal and make a good fillet to give the weld the best fusion.

It’s just the journey of owning an old bike, had my flh two and half years before I could trust it not to let me down in some shape or form, but boy are they worth it. I like em that much I just bought another 😊
Every single old motorcycle will demand more work than riding, that's the nature of the beast. Yes, they look cool when you throw 'em engines on a hardtail frame, but are they rideable? are they dependable? hell no!; I remenber that even when I bobbed out a recent year sportster, although it was dependable, even for daily commuting was a pain in the ass to ride it literally. You want to ride and expect dependability without working your ass off and do just regular maintenance? Look for a good condition recent year bike. In fact there's no need to buy new nowadays, every brand or kind of motorcycle is just too damn expensive not only harley, hell! even the cages are so damn expensive these days! There's a world now out there of good condition used bikes, it's just a matter of looking the right one for one's taste.
All the frustration and headaches, makes the finished product that much sweeter.

re, throttle. I solved my cable issue with a cable guide mod. Cut-off wheel and welder are my friends on 73 shovel bobber.

Hi mate if helps when covid hit I was fitting ape hangers on my shovelhead couldn't get throttle cable I needed so made one out of twin cam cable soldering end on perfect then as went fit it arc cable on battery it lit up red and melted inner cable and ends dropped off 🤣🤣🤣 I stood there in silence 😅
Looks like you're missing the support bracket on the carburetor.
Are you sure you don't have an AMF? A buddy and me worked on his AMF for months trying to get it right. Which we never did, close but no cigar. Even setting everything to factory specs it wasn't right. I own Harleys before and after the AMF years but not during.

I hope you did not put DOT5 silecone in it, that will give you massive leaks arround the seals, you need dot4, I made the same mistake with my 1980 Shovelhead
The factory shop manual calls for DOT 5 so that's what I put in
@@buttcrackcycles mine says dot3, but you can also use dot4, I made the mistake of putting dot5 silecone in it, massive leaks from the brake handle, could not understand why untill I discovered that dot3 and 4 react with the seals and make it expand, dot5 silecone does not do that and therefore causes leaks, so if it starts leaking you know why

Has he welded that crack in the frame? An 'e' clip?? Poor design and l have to say, a potentially disastrous oversight on the mechanics part.
Haven't gotten to the frame crack yet, on the list, need to needle scale the bondo off. New master cylinder was shipped that way with the E clip, maybe I'll try to "upgrade" it to a snap ring
@@buttcrackcycles l see so part came like that, assembled with (you summise) the E clip not seated. Is it not possible to make a shouldered threaded bolt and loctite a nut on? As for the welding l would carefully grind away to the parent metal and make a good fillet to give the weld the best fusion.

It’s just the journey of owning an old bike, had my flh two and half years before I could trust it not to let me down in some shape or form, but boy are they worth it. I like em that much I just bought another 😊
Every single old motorcycle will demand more work than riding, that's the nature of the beast. Yes, they look cool when you throw 'em engines on a hardtail frame, but are they rideable? are they dependable? hell no!; I remenber that even when I bobbed out a recent year sportster, although it was dependable, even for daily commuting was a pain in the ass to ride it literally.
You want to ride and expect dependability without working your ass off and do just regular maintenance? Look for a good condition recent year bike.
In fact there's no need to buy new nowadays, every brand or kind of motorcycle is just too damn expensive not only harley, hell! even the cages are so damn expensive these days! There's a world now out there of good condition used bikes, it's just a matter of looking the right one for one's taste.
