YXZ Portal Issues and Steering Fix? | Fitting a Warn Axon 5500 Winch

- We talk about some of the issues we have encountered while running the portals. Trying to create and figure out a fix for the steering feedback running the super atv portals! Also talk about what was needed to run and mount a Warn Axon 5500 Winch on a Yamaha front bumper.

Machine details:
Justins machine is a 2019 Can-am X3 XRS. It is 72" wide and 172 horsepower. Suspension is setup to the fox tune. It is running 32x14x10 sticky Maxxis Roxxzilla tires. It has a Evo Powersports Shocker cat delete exhaust.
Billys machine is a 2017 yxz 1000r with graves exhaust, tune, 70/30 gytr gear reduction, heavy flywheel, 30" maxxis bighorn tires, 14x7 5+2 Method 401 wheels, weller tie rods, krash offroad cage, bumpers,
sliders, warn 3500lb winch, and simpson suspension seats.
Joshs rig is a 2017 yxz1000r with Super Atv 4" 30% Portals, graves exhaust, tune, 30" maxxis Roxxzilla tires, krash offroad cage, rear bumper, sliders, 70/30 gear reduction, and heavy flywheel.

Changing the rims to a lesser offset will help huge. Eg. 6+1. Need to bring the scrub radius back to deal with the bump steer. Hope that sheds some light on your issue

That would help for sure. But the root of this problem is the portals. It had the same wheels before it went portals and steered great.
@@BlownBudgetOffroad have suz ltr450 quad. Ran 3+2 wheels. Put aftermarket arms and shocks on the quad and the bump steer/feedback was down right scary. Hit a small rock or rut and the handbars were ripped out of your hands. Switched to 4+1 wheels and it was night and day difference. Solved the problem. Have complete confidence in the quad now.
@@BlownBudgetOffroad when i ran the 3 + 2 wheels on the stock suspension/steering, bump steer was never a problem. Only became a problem after the a arm upgrade.
Wow that's alot of winch for Monster Z! That Blown Budget wall sticker is cool. I'm not optimistic, but look forward to seeing if the changes help with the type of riding you all do. Have fun dudes.
I fit a Warn VRX 4500 winch in same bumper with out the extra braces. Did have to drill new mounting holes and modify fairlead opening, but would be a great option for most people wanting large winch.

what steering racks are you guys looking at that extend the throw?
Maybe steering damper to limit sensitivity and steering stop for the hyperextending.
Like some have said maybe look into a steering dampener. I’m rooting for the portals to work out it looks good hope y’all didn’t waste your time swaping it over since you traded the stock parts lol. Best of luck guys.

Hey, I have the similar bumper. Mine has a bolt behind the winch, from bumper to frame. and is non accessible. I can not find info how to get this off. I may have to do the saw zaw. I haven't found anything on the internet. Do you have any Ideas, please. Two days of fighting this crap and in this heat.
We had the front diff out and it was accessible then didn’t put that peice back in!
Boys where did you run power and ground to the batt? Through the trans tunnel??

When they designed the Turbo S they designed a lot of things around 32 inch tires( beefing up the diffs and a lot of other strengthening) that's a lot more rotating Mass and weight compared to the stock setup.
Is anybody out there making be beefier diffs?
I really love Yamaha but I'm afraid they're never going to come out with a machine to compete with the X3 in the Turbo S.
Just pull the portals and see if you can trade them for a turbo setup. Or sell them and buy turbo. You gonna have to pull them anyway when/if you go to the dunes!!! Also you guys should go to the dunes
Might just be the yxz slickroc production has them on there rzr's and a x3 and they don't have that problem might reach out to them
Can I ask why you guys wouldn't just of lifted Justin's yxz instead of portals ?
This is joshs yxz, I switched to a canam x3. But regardless didn’t lift it because we have been breaking axles and diffs with 30’s, adding 32s and a lift kit with no reduction wouldn’t help the case. Portals are supposed to take strain off the drivetrain by reducing the gearing right at the wheel. That’s the theory anyways.

Why would you add cage connecting bars without using bungs ?? Can’t remove the bumper or cage without removing both at the same time, which would prove interesting
I swear when I put 28 inch Maxxis liberties on my yxz my steering got heavy as hell. I just can't go back to those skeet ass factory tires they look terrible
Do you guys know of anybody having these kind of problems on Polaris with portals?

@@danpmatz the mega is also running 35" tires which will help reduce scrub radius. I couldn't tell what the rim offsets were though. I am no expert but this article sure did raise my awareness when I was shopping for a rim and tire setup
