It's tragic this isn't on spotify. I'd listen to it constantly, it feels almost haunting but so beautiful. I remembered this song barely in my memory from my parents playing it years ago and recently thought of good time charlie's was alive.. I searched and somehow didn't find this but luckily my family remembered. This will forever be in my head as one of my favourite songs.
this is an ear worm for sure. Here it is 2022 and I am still drawn to this song.
It's amazing they composed such a gorgeous song about a downtown dive bar in Regina.
I first heard this song on CBC Radio 1 and I thought this was about a person this whole time, now over 10 years later I learn its about a dive bar. Haha, love the song but this makes it less melancholic.
When I first heard "Deep Dark Woods", I thought it was Townes Van Zandt, to those who know him, no higher praise is possible, good luck guys.

Heard this song on CBC and it stuck with me until I finally found it on youtube. Great vibe, and so cool to learn it was about an actual place and written for a contest about a real place. I like how the deep dark woods also borrowed the line "good time charlies got the blues" from an old danny o'keefe song. Great musicians always "borrow" like that...

Never knew it before, but the song is about the closing and demolition of the Plains Hotel (and associated Good Time Charlie's pub) in Regina, Saskatchewan. A big landmark for folks in that area. Much history bulldozed. Oh well. Progress.
I lived at the Plains for almost a year in a dark time in my life, a lot of stories there.
Prairie Lifestyle Company posted this on their page. Love the sound. How are these songs not more main stream? This is real music. Its authentic, deep, and cuts right through your brain.
Except for CBC,these guys don't get played much,even in Saskatchewan.They're so good.It has to be frustrating.
