- South Florida If you have an APP issue on a 2007-2011 GM truck ill look at it for free. It is part of a on going research project. Bring it to my shop for free diag and maybe repair.
GM is having issues with water shorting out the connectors between the ECM and the APP. If you already replaced the pedal and are still having issues To fix this you may need to replace the wires between the APP and the ECM.
"This condition may be caused by water intrusion into the instrument panel (IP) to body harness connector, which
carries the APP sensor signals to the ECM/PCM. This water intrusion results in a voltage difference between APP
Sensor 1 and APP Sensor 2 that exceeds a predetermined value for more than a calibrated period of time, setting P2138."
If you have a complain of a SES light and reduced engine power message as a result of any of the following APP Sensor DTCs: P2120, P2122, P2123, P2125, P2127, P2128, and/or P2138. This may be your problem.
Look for TSB #07-06-04-019F: INTERMITTENT MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) ILLUMINATED, DTC P2138 WITH REDUCED ENGINE POWER (REPAIR INSTRUMENT PANEL (IP) TO BODY HARNESS CONNECTOR) You can google it.
I also recommend you file a complaint to NHTSA so they recall this dangerous problem. here is the link
www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/Vehicle...
The more reports the more likely it will get recalled and maybe you can get your money back.
I recommend reading my report on SUA

Very helpful. This sounds exactly like my problem. Happened to me twice during heavy rain. Made a complaint to NHTSA.

Damn, This kinda confirms what I've been thinking to a degree. I've got an '06 ion redline and it's been acting up in the winter up in washington. I've replaced the PCM, Throttle body, and even the throttle pedal and while those did fix those codes initially, going through the summer into the winter again, I've been getting p2135 and p2138 on the regular. I'll even get a few more codes sprinkled in there, but those are the primary codes that are almost guaranteed to pop up every time. I'm just trying to find some sort of guidance to finally solve this issue because even with the mileage the car has, the engine runs like a champ.
I'm having this problem rn have replaced everything accept pcm but my car won't even start did u get it fixed?
@@codeylombardo8057 No. I think it was the plugs on the PCM harness, but a brand new harness is hard to come by
I have same issue on 06 outlander. Connector clip is broken. Possible solution.
Thank you very much for the videos. I have watched 3 of them that you have posted on this subject!
I bought this truck (2012 Chevy Colorado) about 4 years ago. in it's previous life it was a work truck for a yard maintenance company. I knew it had some electrical issues when I bought it (radio didn't work, dome light would not come on when drivers door was opened). But I drove it for almost 3 years with no problems. About 15 months ago I got the P2138 code. I have one of those FixD code checker things that blue tooths to my phone. Not really a great diagnostic tool I know, but I t does let you know what codes are coming up. Anyway I replaced the pedal, that didn't work. So replaced the throttle body with a Bosch (not GM) and that worked for about 15 months until the other day. When the code came back. Talked to a few local mechanics and they all said try a genuine GM throttle body. That seemed to work drove the truck for about 60 miles everything was fine. The next day (yesterday) didn't even get out of the driveway and the code showed up again. It was so bad I could not even clear the code, it just popped right back up very quickly.
Looked at your videos this morning and went and jiggled the connectors that I could reach. Bent them at a little bit different angles, unplugged and replugged 2 of them. Started up the truck cleared the codes right away. Took it for a 10 mile test drive parked for 20 minutes went for a walk and then drove back home. All is well so far. Next step I guess is to replace the connectors and wires to the ECM. Not sure if that is something I want to tackle or have a mechanic do. (going to take it to a friend mechanic that I think has a tester like in your videos with real time readings, and see if any of the values change when the wires are jiggled and wiggles around). Will update after I do that.
Just wanted to comment here in case somebody else was having similar issues.
Thank you for the videos.... And at least giving me a place to start fixing the problem.
Thank you for the info. Could you tell me what ended up happening?
I believe this same issue is going on with my 2005 corvette
Its very common with the E38 ECM. I just had one that was a ground issue in the ECM itself that was intermittent, but the wiring is the most common. You need to look at the freeze frame records at the time of fault to determine what circuits are acting up.
This has come on 3 times on my 2019 chevy Tahoe RST and $1000 each time it happens. When is a recall going to take place?
Can I make a complain for my 2013 chevy traverse?P2138 code keeps coming.thanks
I have spent thousands at the Cadillac dealer to fix this issue, I'm on my 4th accelerator pedal, replaced ECM, they claimed to have replaced connectors, when I asked about this TSB they assured me no water was getting into any connections. I'm so frustrated.
Just run new wires with no connectors and re pin 6 ECM pins and a new app pig tail.
Also check all ground connections and battery connections.
I replaced throttle and pedal code never left since I got it either. So how much is the work to do the new wiring for the pedal?
The dealer typically charges 6 hours from what I am told. It should take someone from 3-5 hours.
Would this explain why I primarily get this issue in the winter when the water would freeze and further mess with the connection?
When its cold things are smaller and as they warm they become bigger. The hot cold cycle effects it. Also loose connections act worse in cold weather because the metal is smaller.
I have the same code coming up for my 2021 gmc terrain and I have the gas pedal but still the same
Colorado
I get it sometimes . Sometime does not . I just erase it with ob2 . It takes a long time to for the check engine ligt to come on .
I have seen loose connector pins cause this code more then anything but I have seen an ECM cause false high voltage codes likely a ground fault in the ECM. I always recommend starting with the elimination of C-205 and C-109 with new pins at the APP and ECM. The wires take a few hours of labor but the parts are fairly cheap.
will all the wire coming from the padel to the ecm need to be replace?
That fixes the connector problem but it can also be the ECM
Do you have a video to where you show this being done please because I replaced my pedal as well and it's still doing the same thing when it rains
I have been finding the issues lately in the ECM J-1 connector. If the voltage is high its a ground and if its low its 5v or signal.
I made a new video for you. How to do the diag. czcams.com/video/uGEaJvE8QJQ/video.html
You should be able to get every thing you need from this video
Does this work for buick regal 2011, reduced engine , check light , stablilitrak showed dealer fixed then 4 days later message came back they did check said replaced connector and I am good to go can pick auto up. Then in the next 2 hrs they texted said they drove auto message came back. They reached out to GMC said may need replace ECM. Before now saying ecm i asked because it was a less than 5 days auto had to go back why should I pay for the connector. They didn’t charge me now all of sudden ecm but they are going off gmc person told them may need to replace. Please help with a few questions
I have found connector pin issues more than anything causing the codes. In the attached video I am diagnosing a 2010 Silverado with an accelerator problem. Essentially it is the same, but you need to monitor the data when the issue is happening to diagnose it or just re wire the accelerator wiring from the pedal to the ECM.
Often it is a pin tension issue at the ECM so you need to replace the pins and wires from the ECM to the pedal.

What is the pedal reset sequence?
Pedal reset? GM vehicles disconnecting the battery should clear all data.
My Chevy Sonic is having the same problem. Code P2138 shows up while driving. I replaced a new pedal but problem still there. Engine power was reduced while I'm on I95. I live in Hollywood. Can I come to your place to have it diagnosed? Please help

I have this p2138 replaced throttle body and pedal , shop wants me do a new harness , wouldn't re doing wires like u just showed fix this issue 2011 camaro 3.6
Yes. At the dealer techs just run new wires from the ECM to the APP. Just be careful to make Shure the wires are protected from chafing or rubbing.

I change the pedal 4 times so these people know what's going on and still no recall. Smfh
How long did NHTSA and GM allow the ignition switch to kill people before they did a recall? 10 years and over 128 lives confirmed. Yup they know they just dont care.
I have that issue. I disconnect the connector and there was moisture inside 🥵.
In Court GM claims they are waterproof.
This is another related video I made czcams.com/video/uGEaJvE8QJQ/video.html
both signal wires?
If you have a code for both signal wires, it is likely a ground fault, loose connector or one sensor is shorted to voltage. The E38 ECM only has 1 ground and if power is shorted to one wire it can affect both sensors especially when it's the ground for one APP.
Been dealing with this on 15 Chevy Spark for the past two years. If replacing the pedal doesn't fix the problem, will it do any damage to the engine (or whatever) to just live with it and reset the code when it pops up every few months?
I have fixed several by changing the ECM but you really need to use a scan tool and monitor the data to diagnose the problem .
@@southfloridatechnicaltrain2589 Thanks, understood, but assuming it is just an electrical issue and not actually a problem with the engine or whatever, is it harming anything to just reset the code when it happens?
@@brandonlecrone6838 Every time the system goes into reduced power mode it is stopping some kind of unintended acceleration. Now 2012+ vehicles have better systems to stop that then older vehicles but you are still at risk. I would defiantly fix it.
@@southfloridatechnicaltrain2589 Gotcha thanks. My daughter will be moving to Boca in August and this is her car. I do have a basic scan tool and am pretty handy. Not sure if the tool I have will provide the necessary data. It certainly doesn't look like the one in your video!
I have the same issue everybody was talking about but not sure which tech advisor is right about to fix it. I have 2013 Silverado LT 5.3L 1500 4x4 I did replace the throtle body and brake pedal position sensor and only last a few months then happen again, the issue only happen during chill morning of Fall and winter and still happening nowadays not sure what to do fix the problem listen to roo many tech advise and got confused about it because too many this and that and other people did it but still not fix the problem. When it happen this message pop up, (Traction, Stabilitrak, service traction control and Engine Reduced Power) then cannot speed over 5 mph at all, I hope someone understand what I mean
But what code do you have? why replace a BPP for a 2138
@@southfloridatechnicaltrain2589 I have code p0700, p2138, p2127 and the code come and goes but recently I found out my cd radio has a lot malfunction from bad circuit board since got the issue appeared and I unplugged all wire connector on cd radio everything work fine now. Because the truck was drive by the wire not cable anymore
@@Greenkabin Huh thats odd since the APP is not on the network but computers do weird things when they malfunction and any thing is possable.
@@southfloridatechnicaltrain2589 I watch 1 video in youtube and search in google they guy said any electronics malfunction will get the computer crazy the only respond from it is reduced engine power and shut off traction control
@@Greenkabin An APP code can be also set by any sensor sharing reference voltage shorting or even problems in the run crank voltage circuits. Example a MAF sensor can cause an APP code. or a loose ground but most of the time it is directly related to the APP wiring, sensor or the ECM. Any moisture in the connectors can cause a short and that can trigger a code as well.
Eff GM should be a recall effing BS!!!!
There is a lot of stuff GM should recall like the GMT800 Brake lines but the NHTSA allows GM to investigate GM and they never find anything wrong with GM.
