- The legendary producer shows us how it's done.
Mike Dean knows his way around a beat. The Houston native has been is a veteran hip-hop producer, who's worked with not just with the likes of Kanye West, Jay-Z and Travis Scott, but who has a long CV teeming with legends like Scarface, UGK and E-40, among other.
After Moog invited us to their synth shangri-la, House of Electronicus, to see their new semi-modular analog percussion synth Drummer From Another Mother, we got to see Dean take the DFAM for a spin in his own studio where he showed off the rest of his hardware collection and showed us exactly what happens when you get him on the keys. - Hudba
God damn mike's deep ass voice tearin my speakers up at the beginning. My man breathes basslines g
Bro how he tossed the skin like he owns the place! GOAT level.
I think he does own the place
it wasnt the skin it was a patch sheet
Shout out to all the gear heads in here.
Didn't know Dean was Ableton Gang.
Right
Moog should make an effects processor with analog delay, reverb, chorus, and compression. It should be in the shape like mother 32 and dfam with patching. The three tier stand would be complete then.
Rainer Sherwood
I know but I want a single unit made by Moog capable of doing what all moogerfoogers do that’s built just like the mother 32 and dfam.
Yeah, the analog delay is out of production though, and they would never make a reverb.
That’s a good point. So, a nice eurorack setup will make the group great. I personally use a sub 37 but I’ll consider building this for a drum and bass setup.
I just ordered the three tier Sound Studio and plan on using Walrus Audio R-1 - no clue what I am doing with first moog. And that’s ok.
A company (I cannot remember which one) is currently working on a mother style effects unit
This man is a fucking legend. He had his hands in some of my favorite hip hop tracks
HERE FOR THIS.

Exactly. Now that I saw MD not do much with it I don’t feel so bad. Mine is on the shelf as well.

@@zonasound the fuck are you talking about?😂
Gus Sandoval no the fuck he hasn’t . Mike dean has changed his sound a LOT ..
Him looking at the camera with that little grin is the best part of the video.

Out of all those high end synths. There lies a keylab The man is a synth genius
Love Mike Dean!!! Much respect!!!!
😮 Wow this man is a unique master, crazy musical genius.
dfam plus a spliff is one of the greatest pleasures
@6:50 Bravo for tuning the kick to the bass line ;) +2 points
i would kill just to know 1% of what tf is going on
He’s fucking with the kick drum sample by adding effects. Distorting it filtering it and other stuff. The knobs control the effects
David Zekarias the DFAM doesn’t have any onboard FX. Some of the gritty sound comes from its noise source.
It’s a cool piece of kit. Basic sequencer with control over velocity and pitch.
2 oscillators that can hard sync and FM (Osc 1 can FM Osc 2).. and some really snappy decay envelopes on the filter and pitch which give a percussive sound.
Gerald Good III thanks for the info
TOURIST there’s no samples on the DFAM - the “kick” is all synth. Grit is from onboard noise gen. No FX either. There is a filter; HP/LP. Most of the DFAM magic is through enveloping to give punchy drum sounds
Hahaha I like the part where he says: kinda ugly sounding. HAHAH gets me everysingle time.
Moog owes this man. I hope that they hooked him up for all of the ill shit he's blessed us with over the years.
Hopefully, in the near future, we’re gonna see somebody make something real good with that DFAM...... I just know it!
Mike Dean is a legend in the game
this man been making beats since like 94. fucking legend.
I like how he uses the keyboard to tune the sound wave coming out of the moog.
4:04 that face when you know you gonna smash them all

Mike Dean is the true musical genius .... Yeezy just got lucky in finding him.
Yea cause Mike was such a unknown producer 🙄
This guy is stoned to the gills
he got that peter tosh spliff on standby

Lol Mike said when he engineered for Rap A Lot he would eat shrooms everyday
That's why it's distorted beyond belief. Meh. 🤦♂️

@FACTmagazine that'd be dope if yall had a camera on the interface of the DFAM so we can wee what knobs he's playin with...next time! ;)
MIKE DEAN da G.O.A.T!!!!
Did Trent Reznor travel in time to produce Year Zero using this? I am onto something here..
I have a deep rooted love for acid electronica.
What a fucken Legend.
Would be awesome for a noise group!
He tears the patch overlays off like a boss.

TheMar619 sustains the creativity.

Tell Berhinger to..
GOAT
I luv the jam and chop technique! It’s one of my favorite ways to grab real rattle and roll into track. That’s the real Kraftwerk /man machine method. Peace Christo 👏🏻🐕🐕👽🎶🎶
yooo man. Loved your doc. I make beats too but don't have any hardware which you really need., was a drummer in hc punk bands first. I used to hav ed an MPC, Ensoniq ASR and triton now just the laptop. What do you think about all the info, disinfo in the msm lately about the visitors? I seen them, alot are from another timeline/ dimensions. Public is still ignorant even after the Navy literally tells them UAP are real. peace bro

Gambino sold me on the OP-1. Mike Dean is selling me on Moog (that price though!)
You've been had.
Buy it used. The amount of fun and creative moments you're gonna have with it makes it worth it
I’m a huge Synth fan. The DFAM is the MOST FUN synth I’ve ever owned but I find a way to incorporate it into everything I do
This is such a complex technique to produce, I love seeing it
No it’s not.
Wait what was the Gershwin tune? 🤔
2:21 sounds like ful stop by radiohead lol
cool vintage analog auto jam 👍 (hand him a halls)
Of course it’s smoking. Peace Christo 👽👽👏🏻👏🏻🐕🐕🙏🙏🎶🎶🕺🕺👍🏻👍🏻🛸🛸✌🏻✌🏻🔦🔦
I AM A GODDDD
WOW! This was just GENIUS! He should get some kind of award because of this very video! Such skill! He must have studied at the Los Angeles Recording Arts or something of similar status. If only people could reach this level of proficiency the world would be a better place! FUUUUCK! Does he give lessons?!?!? I want to just trash all my gear and become a construction worker Lol! God bless this man, his inspirational knob tweaking is at a level only so many people can attain. Thank you for posting this... SUBBED (That def was some Gershwin shit)!
go outside
this dude is the king of moog

Idk I'd probably give that title to Stephan Bodzin, the german techno artist. He prerty much only uses moogs and his last album was literally a tribute to Robert Moog haha.

Reznor

GUD4U Collective it’s his own merch and his girlfriend did the art. Available on his website.
I still have yet to hear one fucking drum sound from a DFAM.

YESSSSSSS MIKE FKN DEAN
Why are you using the pre-made sound templates that come with it?
Why shouldn't he?
cause the sound is good
Mike Dean needs a Push 2
Anyone know what daw he is using?
ableton
Give me at least one guys, for me to compete with Miky
He's using the preset templates?
Early in the morning? Peace Christo
sweeeeet mother of aphex
shows us how it's done? when?
Wow
oh shit
reminds me of that uzi vert song
Put some respeck on his name. Thank him for Kanye and travis
How do you connect the clock of Ableton to Moog DFAM ? Can you reply ? Thanks a lot
If it's anything like the mother 32 it should have a midi input. I normally go straight from an audio interface into the mother 32.
It doesn't have a midi in which is quite lame in 2018.
Yeh, that is lame.. and strange considering they included it in the mother 32. I guess you'd have to sync it via a dedicated midi to CV module in that case.
DFAM can easily be sync’d to the clock of any DAW like Ableton. You simply need to send a pulse or click signal from your DAW, through the analog output of your audio converter, and into the Tempo input on DFAM’s 24-point patch bay. This analog pulse can come from any other instrument that transmits analog SYNC (Mother-32, SQ-1, Volca boxes, Keystep etc…). You can even use an audio pulse from you DAW sent through your audio interface’s headphone amplifier as a means of sync!
Thanks a lot to all!
4:05 cute old man moment
grandpa dean
ouch
Good or bad, get ready to hear a lot of these sounds.
4:42 everytime
The sound is not clean...rec troubles?
This is what people think Kanye does
Tannoy!!!
Anyone know why he takes off those layer sheets on that moog?
It to recall the settings.
Fleur De Lys thnx for the reply. Recall the settings means?
@@LuisA.Marines1 those sheets have all of the knob settings for a specific patch on them, so he can recreate them when he wants to. So when he ripped off the sheet, it was because he didn't need those patch settings anymore.
Presets! Nowadays you just use your mouse to change a preset on a VST.
Kanye West’s favorite
Why does he keep tearing the paper off?
Carl Grant Those are patch overlays. You take a blank one and mark the knob positions on the sheet so you can recall & dial in the patch quickly due to analogs typically not having patch storage.
hevquip Do you think Moog will ever make patch storage for every modern Moog products?
Thanks for asking this question.
not sure if those are even the originals. When i bought mine it came with about 8 overlays labeled as "electro", "kick drum" . . etc.
I’m Mike Dean and I’m tweaking Moog preset patches …
mi-e foame
