Technique with Grammy Winning Producer / Mix / Mastering Engineer Mike Dean - Pensado's Place
Vložit
- čas přidán 3. 06. 2024
- This week Dave geek's out on the technique his dear friend and musical mastermind, Mike Dean applied in the studio when working on Travis Scott's "Astroworld", "Ye" - Kanye West, "The Carters" - Jay Z & Beyoncé - and much more.
We also dive into the production mind of this multi-instrumentalist who says he would be nothing without his knowledge of music theory thanks to his piano teacher. This is jus the tip of the iceberg with this guy. You're at The Place!

You guys should have Scott Storch on here! That guy has had so many hit records... And he’s got an incredible story of rags to riches; back to rags, and back to riches. It’ll be a good episode!
Cosign!
I love scott storch and his music. Man he blew all that money. He’ll never get that rich again but hes still one of the best

Well you’re getting one tonight
4/20/2020 dropped it today :))))
Mike is all yall trap producers' father.
Nope the real fathers of trap are the ones who actually grew in the trap and made that shit mainstream, you give credit to those guys who started making those beats first
NORTH as I’m mike dean lol, look into his past and the shit he’s worked on, beyond a legend, a pioneer
Nope Zaytoven Lex Luger
Boi stop. He just hopped on that wav. Pun intended. Shawty Redd 1st and Zaytoven close 2nd. Lex went another level with it...made it mainstream.
no Shawty Redd is
The most influential mixer/ mastering guy in the industry. Keep asking questions

@@Menyceprod same i couldnt hear what he said about phasers and delays either :(
808: Basic (idk)
Phasers: Fender Rhodes

@@Menyceprod he said bass again. Same answer as moog which was the first question

What's crazy is how special this man is! His influence goes far and beyond!
Mike Dean is awesome, but I'd love to see some more leftfield producers on here...like Karriem Riggins, Kaytranada, Flying Lotus, Knxwledge etc.

Dang ... great conversations!! Thanks Dave, Herb, et al!! And, I love Jackson Hole. Been there many times.

chuck a Mondomod on it as well, you can pan that shit.
That’s what Ryan Hewitt uses the air stereo width for, works wonders
Wow, what a great start to the show. Herb is right about doing activity's outside of music. I noticed the more articles and books I consume, the stronger my lyrics are in my songs. Also, Every aspiring producer should read Michael Beinhorn's "Unlocking Creativity"! It's fantastic and the only book that covers this aspect of the production process!
I love this show! Mike's a savage.
Love this whole episode! 🔥 Salute to all you guys! Mike is a beast! 🔥
Mike out here in the chancletas, lol.

"I mastered watch the throne with one ear" - GOD
I really enjoyed this episode! Took a while to get started, but then it gets good 👍
You guys are always amazing. Thanks
Mike Dean is AMAZING.
I mastered Watch The Throne with one ear . What a bar
Legend of legend. Living legend. He is more famouse between producers than normal people.
Damn. So glad I found this. Also I'm happy that I understood all the lingo they were using. After 5 years, my education is finally paying off
These interviews need to be an hour long
not the easiest guy to interview. Short answers..
Why make it more than it needs to be?
Hahaha
I wish he would explain a little more. Being secretive about your techniques, I get it, but nobody's actually gonna take your place, I mean you're Mike Dean man
That's just it people like that aren't technical they just go by ear...apply until it sounds right move on. This is what meant when he said "it aint rocket science"
If you ever get the chance to shadow engineers in industry sessions with top or really good artists, the first thing you'll notice is how good the performance and vocal are before the engineer touches it and it makes the engineer sound phenominal.
Less experienced artists... gotta use a lot of processing
as someone who does what he does and i just discovered that I do. It's almost liek it's trial and error and you just get it to do whatever sounds good.
interview start at 10:14
I love the way guitar sounds
amazing interview!!! Thank you!!
Thanks for asking all the questions we wanna know, dave!
Mike Dean Jazz project I need that!
Pensado's is the place to be!!!
Straight up ashing on the table. Legend.
growing up as a CFL fan and now a growing engineer and enthusiastic Pensado's Place devotee, really happy to finally see this addressed on the show. appreciate what your dad did for Black visibility in Canada so much, and love what you're doing for the audio professional community now.
man these videos are starting to look real good. you guys are doing great
Men, i was waiting for this
Respects to your dad. Makes me proud to be a Canadian 🧡
Thank u sooo much God bless
22:15 that peep at the joint😂😂
LOL!!!
Mike Deam gives a look everytime he gives away a secret...
I was looking for this comment
He seems pissed when they ask. When he said he just turns up the vox 3 db when they sound right he regretted it haha
mike muddy low end dean....absolute legends
Thought I saw the Trawick name before. Good Place clip. Lots of class and sass. Kanye is getting real and a needed role model these days outside of music. Some interesting tips.
great interview..
Lighting one up for this episode!
mike rocking the sock with slippers dope
I always wondered who bought those camo print Polo shirts.
Polo herb
Lol nice
Mike Dean is a legend.
epitome of the age of information. how lucky we are to be able to listen in on this wisdom. Damn grateful for this video! Thank you Dave, and thank you Mike.
Thanks for CZcams's subtitles.
Mike wore flip flops to an interview? Legend 😂
Lmao
A great episode..
He is so checked out 🥱
a legend
They way Herb looked at him when he tapped his blunt on the desk..HA!!!!!!!!
I wonder if they'll KEEP the burn🔥 mark on the chair for nostalgia/reference purposes or will Mike D replace the chair/s?!?!🤔 Either way, he's a legend. I've been listening to him for almost 3 decades. It would be an honor to sit in that 🔥 chair.
I was a runner while mike was at the studio i worked at. mike is cool AF and talented AF but he also out smokes any person I know. Man bought the entire swisher sweet supply from the nearest CVS
Mike seems like a cool dude to chill with
literally been researching tMike then boom! I heard how loud sicko mode was and they asked him but he wouldn't tell them the secrets haha
He told them. As loud as possible before distortion, but that applies for all frequencies. He also said he masters twice, once while mixing and then remove effect before final export, then master all tracks together to even them out.
I just meant he didn't break down the exact plugins he used to get sicko mode as loud as possible. I don't blame him I just thought it was funny because Pensado wanted that info haha.
he said get the vocals to the right level then add 3-4db
he clipped the converters on his console after summing out the master which gave the track an analog soft-clip saturation effect which warmed up the low-end and glued the mix
Multiple limiters, soft clipping, eq, compression, saturation. Has a lot to do with EQ curve after multiple layers of limiting, and feeding that into a final brick wall. I overshoot commercial mixes regularly.
Hahaha "I'm out of questions..." "let the high create one for you" lmao
Mk ta lair d’être un bon je te vois partout
love this man
great questions
Mike said this one gon be ya favorite song! 😝
I initially heard his name during his time at Rap-A-Lot Records. The Diary is one of my favorite mf albums from taht time. Scarface, N.O. Joe, and Mike Dean perfected that album's sound.
I like how Mike just has a blunt sitting on the table chillin. Lol
What was the recording chain on that acoustic Dave? Dope interview guys!👊🏾🙏🏾🤘🏾💯
Just awesome episode!
I'm curious. Have we hit peek loudness for songs? Like before they reach absolute distortion. Cause, damn, ozone 8 gets my songs super fucking loud. The lose all their dynamic range, but damn... I really hope this loudness wars stops for good.
PERIOD!
Alex Tumay!!! get that mans on here for the culture.
