Photography Tree Challenge. Newborough, Anglesey

  • In this landscape photography vlog I'm challenged by a viewer to shoot a tree from various perspectives, but limited to using a single focal length for all of the images. I do get to choose the focal length, and discuss my reasoning. It hopefully allows me the optimum flexibility, from a wide angle shot right down to close detail. You might be surprised at the focal length I went with!
    I ventured out on a balmy late winter afternoon with my camera gear to Newborough Warren, where I was hopeful of some good golden hour light for my photography. This is a huge area of ancient sand dunes on the isalnd of Anglesey, which is now grassed over and has a few lone pine trees dotted about. I hoped one would be perfect for this project.
    What I thought would be a relatively straightforward process turned out to be more photographically challenging than I anticipated. But in equal measure it was also more rewarding than expected! Let me know how you think I interpreted the brief, and your thoughts on the results ...

    Great challenge. A good reminder to challenge myself now and then to stretch my composition thinking. That horse, couldn't have planned it better. Thanks David.

    Great challenge and really nice shots. That was a great way to spend a sunset. I particularly liked the shout of the pine tree limb extending from the left side of the frame with the distant mountains beneath. I wouldn't have thought of that.

    Newborough Warren that's a blast from the past, that tree was a sapling last time I was there, I remember when it was all dunes 😂great shots and use of your focal length, the stars of the show were definitely the ponies, our camera aerobics a close second though

    Nice one David. You did well with the challenge. I think I would have struggled with that focal length as it’s not really one I use often by choice. I rather enjoyed the format of the vlog with the stationary camera position. It’s a little different in terms of perspective and allows the viewer to observe your approach to the shots. I recommend using it again. Love the final image too. Cheers, Jeff

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  Před 5 lety

      Hi Jann - not tedious in the slightest! I really appreciate feedback A. because it makes all the effort worthwhile and B because CZcams likes it as making the video worth promoting! But mainly because I really enjoy hearing from people and engaging about photography. The ponies on the dunes are semi-wild. They're kept in the area specifically to manage the vegetation, but they pretty much just live there without any human intervention. Sometimes they are relocated to other coastal areas nearby where there are similar environments. 😊👍🏻

      @DGriffGallery  Před 5 lety +1

      I totally agree with you. I would certainly shoot primes as a preference all things being equal - but I went down to M4/3 in order to save weight for my hiking so the 12-100 was actually part of the decision process 😊👍🏻

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  Před 5 lety

      That's a very fair point, of course. And I would normally totally agree. But my personal preference now and then is to use the tools at my disposal to get what I want out of them. In this instance the sharpness of the image was pretty much irrelevant. The tree was always going to be a silhouette and the foreground was of no consequence. The image was about shape, colour and tone and I specifically wanted the most sunburst effect I could get. I'm aware of the lens / body limitations and wouldn't normally push it that far. 😊👍🏻

  • @harry.digital
    @harry.digital Před 5 lety +1

    Loved the production in this video, it made for a nice watch. Just wondering why you composed the tree off centre at the end? Nice shot regardless

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  Před 5 lety

      Hi Harry, many thanks for watching and taking the time to make contact. That's a good question: I'd probably have thought about a centred composition if I wasn't balancing it with the pony. And I'd have taken a couple of options including the tree on a vertical third. I would have most likely settled on a third version as a final composition if the pony wasn't there though, because of the scale of the tree in the shot. Had I been standing some way off it, with the tree quite small in the frame and the sky as a larger area of negative space, then the tree centred would have worked better. But the sun would have been lost at that scale in these conditions. If I'd had nothing going on in the sky that would have been the sort of image I'd have gone for. 😊👍🏻

    Interesting approach! The last shot on the video was a great keeper, and that (perhaps) demonstrates the benefits of a zoom lens. Plus, if you had tried to shoot that with, say, the Olympus 45mm 1.8 fixed focal length I doubt it would have been possible to mount a filter holder (of course the 45mm 1.2 is a different story, that costs as much as the 12-100!) Also noted the absence of flare that the non-believers claim is a problem with M43 cameras.

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  Před 5 lety

      You're quite right on all counts, Tony. It's not always possible to eliminate flare, but if you're careful you can control it reasonably well in most cases 😊 👍🏻
