Super Mario 64 is a Nintendo classic and having played it quite a bit and reviewing it before, I didn't think there was much more you could do with this game. But then this DS game remake came out and blew me away. I was able to play and be nostalgic for parts of this game, and then pleasantly surprised with the new additions. To me, Super Mario 64 DS is the definitive way to play this game.

Which Nintendo game would you like to see receive a Super Mario 64 DS style remake on the Switch?
I'd love to see both Galaxy games get a switch remaster, however I think that Sunshine would be more likely to get a remaster first
I've just started playing Mario 64 ds
any of the Wario Land Games!
I would love a sunshine ☀️ remake.
Final Fantasy VII! Wait...
Only god knows how many hours I spent playing poker with Luigi as the dealer
The luigi minigames were always my favorite, I must have spent at least 500 hours just on those minigames
Same my Dad would hog my DS for hours playing that one game
Lord knows how many children had those gambling addictions
(Including me)
My dad used to play those mini games as well.
Absolutely
"After trying a handful of those minigames you probably won't be coming back"
Dude to me that game was pretty much a minigame collection that had Mario 64 on it.
Yeah, I don't think Jirard realized the value these minigames provided in an age before smartphones
Everyone I knew that played this game enjoyed the mini games.
Same. I spent god knows how many hours playing those minigames. ESPECIALLY Luigi's poker game
even now, the mini games are enough to make up a whole game
Yeah, I played those minigames a lot!
When you closed your DS with this game running, Mario says bye-bye and I think that’s really neat.
Connor Green and that is what got me caught playing past my bedtime years back
That was not "neat"! MY DS GOT TAKEN FROM THAT BASTARD
This is such a wholesome comment
maybe mario should've said sorry for the lack of anti-aliasing
No it sucked my mom kept taking my ds
Reminder: These minigames on the DS version were present when smartphones do not exist yet.
Oh wow. I never thought about that. I can see why so many had great memories with those minigames now.
i had my first smart phone in 2002. it ran windows pocket pc, also there were palm pilot phones before that. maybe what you meant was "before everyone and their grandma had a smart phone". for what ever reason everyone thinks apple invented the modern day smart phone back in 2007, including some of my less educated IT friends.
@@jasonbrown467 You’re not wrong that “smart” phones existed before that but they weren’t in the modern form we see today. They didn’t have the same blueprints that the iPhone gave us to kickstart actual smartphones. They had resistive touch needing a stylus, really underpowered CPUs, installing apps wasn’t as centralised and easy because there was no App Store. Plus the UI wasn’t intuitive and easy for the average consumer to use. The foundations were definitely there but it wasn’t enough to be considered a smart phone yet. Sure you could browse the internet, play games, and call people but its still very limited.
I remember playing this during my elementary years in the 2000’s and was having fun. Although I never knew how to unlock Luigi and Wario, always wanted to. But now with all the guides on the Internet nowadays...18 year old self wanna tell my 5 year old self “Bruh”.
Xeno Best X I don’t even remember how I found them in the first place.
I probably got through the game twice before I managed to find Luigi. Still, I was so excited because I managed to find on my own… Stuff like that meant a lot to me as a kid.
I'm surprised I found how to get them pretty early as a kid. Then again I wanted to fine Luigi badly.
Omg yes, i did the same. I loved the Lego DS games too, and Pokemon
That’s my entire life with Video games until I was like 12. If I could go back and look at all the stuff I just didn’t finish, I’d be like “You.... you just aren’t smart are you?”

I feel like this is the version that should of been Remade for Switch in 3D All Stars. Not complaining that we got the original but it still feels like a missed opportunity to uplift this version instead.
I think they should port galaxy 2 before this but hey they dont care, they already got their money

Ayyyy it was my first DS game as well (2007). Love this version ❤️
My first was New Super Mario Bros, but Mario 64 DS is my favorite
Mine was Mario and Luigi's Bowser's inside story. I barely knew how to read yet, but I had a ball. I got stuck once I got a star thing from inside bowser. I really overthought things
One of the most underrated games ever made. Other than the controls (which aren’t even that bad), everything is better than the original.
Also Luigi helicopter backflip breaks the game in the best way possible.

This was the first video game I ever played, ever. It took me years to complete 100%, since I not only had to learn how to play and get good at the game, but games in general. I took it with me EVERYWHERE, and it took the help of all my friends to finally beat the game. It’s still one of my most treasured childhood moments. When my little brother turned about four or five (the age I was when I started playing), I reluctantly gave him my copy of the game, along with my original grey DS, so he could make some of the same memories I had made. It was a really touching Toy Story 3-like moment, until four days later he flushed it and the DS down his school’s toilet.
Pedrogonzalez I laughed out loud, omg that's so bad 😅
How tf do you flush a ds down a toilet.
you had us in the first half not gonna lie
This is MY mario 64. I’ve been playing it every once and a while, and I’m finally trying to finish it. My idiotic 5 year old self never figured out how to unlock Luigi or Wario, and I never beat the game. Kinda funny if you ask me! I need to finish it soon...
This is the definitive edition of Mario 64. In my opinion: the only edge the original has is the speed running community, as well as being the origin of 3D Mario. DS absolutely updated it in every way possible.
Small critique: all characters can use the hats and the wing. The only exception here for the first one is that no other character is yoshi besides Yoshi. The wing can be used by everybody tho.
Actually only mario can use the wing unless you're playing the multi-player versus mode, but yeah, he didn't make it clear that the bros and Wario can turn into other players using caps except they can't turn into yoshi.
I had to look up how to get Luigi + Wario online. The text-based (yes, _text-based_ ) guides I used told me to "push against the mirror" to find King Boo so that I could unlock Weegee, but didn't tell me which mirror.
Spent longer than I should've in the Snowman's Land room.
Yeah, Super Mario 64 DS is the definitive version to play. Though it kinda sucks that there's no analog control, and that most of the small flaws the original had were kept.
I have problems with my copies though, i’ve had 3 copies of it, every single one gets it save file corrupted after a while, thank god for emulators
His Yoshi “HHNNNNNGH!” killed me!
I grew up playing this game, it was one of my absolute favorites. I would play the 2 player mode with friends a bunch. (and i still love the mini games due to how much i played them)
I loved the minigames me and my friends would try get the highest score got to a poit where it wasn't possible to get a higher score on some of them

@Jordan Raffel I experienced it on "new" Super Mario Bros.
"Imagine playing Tic-Tok Clock but on the toilet! I haven't done it, but it's possible"
You coward, own that toilet play....
Aye! I just got this game! I think it really is underrated. It has it's flaws but it still is a worthy version of the game... Although play it on a 3DS or Wii U if you don't like the feel of using a D-Pad for this.
SuperMairo !
Wii u?
I was about to comment about how analog sticks don't change that you only move in 8 directions, but I misread the comment.
Whew! That was close.
This is definitely one of the most overrated games I have seen
0:38 You remind me of the "How do you do, fellow kids?" meme, minus the skateboard.
Jirard never realized that all 4 characters can change into each other not just yoshi (except the other 3 can't be yoshi)
I love both versions of this game. That said one of the best things about either of them is the romhacking community's work on the original; so many great hacks!
Feel nostalgic at those minigames
4:40 being my first game ever I can only agree
This game is good, but it just reminds me how amazing a switch remake would be
Hehe
Well seems like you got what you wanted

@@salazarRE4 Have you seen the new switch release? They made "super mario 3d all stars" a re-release of 64, sunshine, and galaxy for the switch.
@@seanbelon1637 Yeah I know, I've preordered it too. My point was that he asked for a remake, but all we got is upscaled roms
Finally somebody who acknowledges that remakes and new iterations of games aren’t objectively bad, and that it just feels weird because it’s different to you and sheds light on the fact that to another generation, this is normal, and there’s nothing wrong with that. THANK YOU for finally saying what nobody else online has!
11:49 Actually, I vastly prefer how the clock looks in the original with the fog and everything. Makes it look mysterious.
Waiting for the backlash from some fans of the game. I never played the original but I enjoyed playing the DS remake
Well I've never really played either version since I was born about a year or two into the GameCube era
I was too, but I also played the remake when I was pretty young.
@@waffles8144 ok
I'm of the elder generation from the NES and SNES eras, thus a 3D Mario has never appealed to me, but I would not belittle anybody who prefers them - "each to their own".
The N64 for me was Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Shadow Man, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron and Shadows of the Empire, to name but a few.
The nes, snes, and n64 were actually my first consoles despite it being around the GameCube/Wii era. The original super Mario world and Mario 64 were some of the first games I ever played. But for some reason I feel more nostalgia for the ds version of Mario 64.
I was a toddler when the original 64 came out, I played it but didn't do much. When I was gifted a DS at 12, it had the new Mario 64, I loved it, would repeatedly get all 150 stars. It brings back memories, one thing you didn't touch on was the battle game you play with friends, a thing most overlooked but brings back memories of me and my seventh grade friends playing it in the school library.
If you're playing the game like he says always using Yoshi is best as there's almost always a hat if needed.
17:32 this aged well with this crappy 3D allstars collection huh
I've never played Super Mario 64, until recently on the switch and I loved it!
"Imagine playing tick tock clock on the TOILET" Ive done that many a time, and it is a very good past time. Well, when I had time to pass, but still its fun.
Also the rec room birthed my future gambling addiction
I will never

Playing 64 in the early 2000s was the bomb, then the DS came out and my mom being the pro that she was got me a bundle with this game, she tells me I cried tears of joy and I cant remember for a damn lol.

“Changed for the better” I can almost see the people who had nostalgia of the original or / and like speedrunning it telling you your wrong.
says ds graphics are improved, shows side by side
me: well the ds makes the n64 look pretty clean, crisp and not blurry, now that's saying something
I just don't like being forced to switch characters (when it's not instant).
Gnidel I kinda wished this was just on 3ds, *and Waluigi was playable* it hurt playing the game properly on the ds and with the 3ds stick it still didn’t feel right.
The ds game has more and better content, but I personally like the look and controls from the original better.
Love the mini-games tho! :D
The DS has like 10 pixels
I love this game! It's kind of cool to see new things put into such a classic game. I remember looking for secrets from fake stories like "purple Prizes" and "black box", so I played this game a lot.
Man this game was my childhood. It’s just like you said. This game is my image for Mario 64 and I’m so glad to see a CZcams reviewer not crap on it because it’s not the original.
Surprised you didn’t talk about the controls more considering there is less analogue movement due to the way it’s programmed. Since it was programmed with a dpad in mind the game makes you snap to 8 directions instead of the 360 movement of the original. Even if you use a circle pad on 3ds or wii u it is still not programmed for 360 movement. That never bothered me but I do realise it’s a valid complaint. Great video Jirard!
"Hungghhhhh" 🤣🤣
This game was my childhood, I played this endlessly alongside mario kart ds, seeing you review it brings back memories!
10:57 pure gold hahaha
I love this version. It’s the one I grew up with although I did play the original first but only at a friend’s house. Great game and great vid as usual
There was one time when I was little, my Grandpa was in the hospital. We had a pretty good chunk of the family who showed up to visit. I had a cousin who had this on his DS and nearly all of my family spent hours only playing the minigames over and over, there were so many fun ones. It was awesome how, even though the game is a single player game, these minigames opened up an entirely to aspect to the game where others could enjoy these minigames.
Yoshi being the first charecter made me a big fan.
To me, both versions have their own spark to them.
This game to me is the pinnacle of mobile gaming. It’s literally a full console game and then some with decent graphics and great controls and it all runs and loads so smoothly. I used to play this every day when I was a kid, I would hide it under my bed and when mom told me to go to sleep I would turn the volume down and stay up late playing it and I always had it in the car anywhere we went. There are other good mobile games but nothing quite of this caliber
This game, alongside Mario Kart DS and New Super Mario Bros DS were the holy trinity of my childhood.
I bought this when I was six and I did not even know this was a remake
LETS GOOO I was actually waiting for You to do this game I like this version of 64 Mario a lil more Tbh
I ended up growing up with both the n64 version and the ds version. My sister had the n64 version that I played and eventually completed at a pretty young age. Once the ds came around, I no longer had access to the n64 version by normal means, but I was super excited for it. Because I got a limited amount of games, I played it a lot. After school, on car rides, whenever I could really. I enjoyed it a lot to the point where I ended up completing the game not once, not twice, but over ELEVEN times.
All that said, I really enjoy both versions for their own reasons. I personally prefer the ds version just because it's more polished, but I occasionally would go back and complete mario 64 in a day just because its overall movement just felt special.
Jirard dude. You're right about something always being for someone. When you're a teen on the school bus in an era where your parents couldn't afford to get you a unique game for party games, it's a miracle when your full length single player Mario game has around a full half Mario party integrated into the game itself. Being able to burn those 40 minute bus journeys with your friends was great.
If they remake it for the switch I could see them adding a few more characters and possibly co-op

The nostalgia is coming in hard right now
Born in 2001, this was the SM64 that I grew up with. Countless fond memories.
I remember the playground rumour that in order to unlock Luigi, you needed to beat up the haunted piano in the ghost house. I died to that piano like 100 times before finding that Luigi painting out of sheer luck. One of my happiest moments in all of gaming.
Then in the early days of youtube, learning the various glitches and the Waluigi fan theory, just so so good.
For some reason when I was a kid I absolutely loved the mini games and might have played them as much as the actual game
This game was honestly too difficult for me as a kid, and I ended up having more fun playing the unlockable mini games with my sibling and cousins. Same goes for New Super Mario Bros.
Edit: Misremembering apparently. I played the mini games on my own and the vs mode with family.

I remember walking from middle to meet up with my little brothers at the elementary school to wait for our parents to pick us up, standing around with my friends who were doing the same, and passing this one ds around trying to beat each other’s scores in the mini games (specifically the bomb matching one and the trampoline drawing one). that and bouncing golf balls off the brick wall.
I haven’t thought about that in a long time. Nostalgic. 👍
That locked door sound effect and Bowser laughing at the end haunted me as a kid

Those minigames were actually pretty fun, especially with multiplayer, and New Super Mario Bros added even more awesome multiplayer minigames! :D
Love that you used some Donkey Kong County 2 music!
Though I’d played the SNES Mario games, this was my first 3D video game experience. I’m ashamed to say I didn’t realize it was a remake for a while. At the time, I was crazy about Yoshi in Super Mario World. Playing as him was something I never thought I’d see, so that was personally something special.

This was the first mario game I ever had on my shitty old DS. I loved it and I would always play the luigi minigames in the rec rooms because those are objectively the best minigames.
I'm yoshi player when it comes to this game. you only need to unlock the other characters to unlock yoshi's potential...and those damn rabbits.
I'll never forget playing those mini games on the school bus back in the day
loved the minigames as a kid still love them now. my favourite is gambling with Luig especially that card minigame where you have to pair up cards to remove them all from the table
The Mario 64 DS was actually my first Mario game apart from the og Super Mario Bros
It was mine as well! I did play Mario Party 7 at a friend's house first, but SM64DS was the first Mario game I truly owned and got invested in.
It was my first game ever
Nothing will change my mind on preferring this over the original.
More content is always FTW. Those controls are meh, then again, the N64 joystick was rugged and the game's camera stunk.
Wish this was the version in the 3D all stars, looks neat
Mario 64 is my Christmas game. I always think of Snowman’s Land when I think of the holidays.
Every December I try to make time to complete it start to finish and that started with Super Mario 64 DS. Game’s good. Real good. Maybe next year I dig out the DS version and give that a shot again.

Who's watching this now, just before the 3d collection for switch drops
I don't know, man. I couldn't get into this version back in the day. I played it for a while but dropped it a few days after, I didn't like switching characters and the new stuff for some reason. Maybe I'm just biased toward Mario 64.
I got this back in the day and I 100% agree. Why should I have to have this unnecessary mechanic where you change characters to get to areas that would have normally been accessible with just mario last game. It just complicates things
As someone who played the DS version 1st and then the original on a friend's console, I can totally see why the change was so jarring.
Also.....I didn't liked the less than PS1 level of graphics.

It’s too bad that 64 DS was so pixellated, but that makes sense as the DS was lower resolution than what Mario 64 on the N64 ran at.
Not so much difference in the resolution department though. M64 is a bit more pixelated on original console than in this video.
This is how I got started with 64 when I was a kid. It will always be in my top 10 games of all time
Super mario 64 Ds is probably my favorite mario game just cause of nostalgia. I grew off of that game and 100% it alot as a kid. A few months ago I decided to replay it, and when I loaded it up all 3 profiles were at 150 stars. I also played mini games vigorously as a kid, and have high scores I could never beat today. All in all, love this game to death :)
