  • How to Purify Air from Smoke | Air Purifier for Allergies | DIY Filter for Wildfire Smoke
    Over the past couple of weeks, wildfires have been a major problem on the west coast. The air is full of smoke to the point that it's blocking the sun. People are having more and more trouble breathing as a result. This is a simple way to purify the air in your home from all the smoke until this passes. Using a cheap box fan and a good quality air filter, this little DIY air purifier will also work for allergies and is way better and cheaper than an expensive store bought unit.

    It’s a great idea. I have been using one in my woodshop for a couple years. One tip I would give is to use painters tape to tape it on. Much easier to replace and works just as good.

    I wanted to say how great full I am to you for this suggestion. I non stop worry about my pets, one has asthma, one has itching he gets shots for.
    The machines Ive purchased are very expensive & Tiny!
    I just lost my youngest baby he wasn’t even 4, out of the blue he couldn’t breath, I took him to the ER it was Sunday & they said he had fluid on his lungs around his heart & his heart was enlarged. This will probably sound insane but we were soul mates he went through so much with me, but he was always beside me.
    Literally when I got up to throw something away he got up too!
    I’m broken from this & well with the skies the past few years Who knows how much time anyone has left here in the US GOD BLESS THANK YOU AGAIN. #RestInParadose&PeaceMigi until we are together again!
    I love you so much Mommy ❤️

    My new furnace uses those thick filters, and it has been a blessing to breathe clean air. Every time the air conditioner or furnace runs, the return air is forced through that large filter. When neither the furnace nor the air conditioner is running (in mid-spring and mid-fall), I can switch the thermostat to the 'fan-only' setting. By doing this, the air in the house cycles through that filter. ~Margie

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  Před 3 lety +1

      My furnace is either on or off. I'd really like to separate the heating part from the fan so I can do what you do with just having the fan on.

    • @greenthumbelina7331
      @greenthumbelina7331 Před 3 lety +1

      @@MikeKincaid79 The furnace I had to replace operated the way yours does. If you talk to a heating specialist (I'm lucky to have one in the family), they might be able to change out your thermostat. I think it's worth asking, but I don't know if you would be able to use one of the large filters without having a lot of ductwork done.

    Great idea. From experience living currently in the North Bay/Wine Country of CA where we had the firestorm in 2017 and massive fires before and after that you will have to change the filter much more frequently when the skies are filled with smoke and don't forget to change the one on the house too if you have central air as it will be clogged too. Stay safe.

    This is a great way to filter air. The hard part may be finding the good filters but that's a sign of the times that we're experiencing atm. A few years ago, I saw a video from some folks in China doing exactly this for their home.
    Last year, I put a pair of the cheap, stringy blue filters onto a pair of 20" fans that I place in one of my windows just to see how much dirt I was bringing in. After only a week or two, the filters were all fuzzy from the junk coming in the window. It's pretty dry and dusty here on the high plains in Colorado.

I have asthma and have had chemicals and stuff trigger anaphylactic shock! Thankfully almost two years ago God cured me of most of it. I have struggled with a lot of headaches and lack of concentration with the smoke. The rain that started last night brought us down to an air quality of 10 today!!!! It feels good to be able to breath and no sore throat or head aches! I wish the winds would blow it east to put the fires out. I am thankful I did not end up in the ER!!! His filter system realy does work. We have used one of the same filters. It has a MERV rating of 12 if you need to compare to other model filters. Ours only lasted about a ten days in the worst smoke and it realy improved the air quality in the house. My wife has asthma and better air is a lifesaver for her. It was realy hard to find a replacement, all the stores were out. All we could get was another brand MERV 13 rated, it worked but not as well the air volume was realy reduced. So I will get two of the origanal filters as replacements as soon as they are avalable. If you think you may ever have a smoke event get a filter now. My fan has a square grill and I can feel the air leak back so I am going to add some card board to the corners.

    thats a Mirv 12 filter, thats almost there. it's when you get to mirv 13 and above (max is 16) that you really start to filter out even the smallest particulates. Mirv 13 is fantastic for smoke and it is even capable of trapping Corona.
    i have a mirv 13 4 inch on a 20 inch box fan in my living room and it works amazing.

      @@MikeKincaid79 Thanks Mike. I went with a 5" Merv 13 filter to tape on the back of a box fan. Now I'm trying to figure out a few more things, if you have any input that would be greatly appreciated. This box fan air purifier system, while it is filtering the indoor air, will also be stirring up a huge amount of dust particles just by having a fan on. We would prefer not to be in the room when this is taking place.
      So regarding the filtration rate, do you know how long would it take to filter the air in a small room, so that all the indoor air has been purified, with time for whatever remaining "dust to settle" so to speak? An hour, a day? And how many times, by per how often would this cycle need to take place to maintain clean air? If you don't know these kind of technical effectiveness questions, can you recommend where to find out?

      I leave mine running 24/7. The box fan should have info on it or on the packaging that gives you the cubic feet per minute. Then you can figure out the cubic feet of the space you are in and it would be easy to figure out from there how fast the air in the room will turn over.

    This question sounds really dumb... but please understand I'm in Australia and the houses and apartments I've lived in have only ever had windows for air circulation and wood fires for heat...and some more expensive places have air conditioners (reverse cycle) - I think they're also known as heat pumps, but I've never had one.
    So, my dumb question is... what are those filters you're using there normally for that are so common to buy? Do you guys have inbuilt house filtration or something? I can't say I've ever seen a filter box like that at our hardware stores (Bunnings, for instance) - unless it is for an oven slide-out rangehood over your oven. :-| What a bugger.
