- In Fences, Denzel Washington takes us back to the Amerca's 50th and invites us into the home of an African-American family. Those were tough days for African American. In this interview, Washington talks about the past and present, and the progress made in between.

Every time this man brings up race you can just tell by the look on Denzel’s face he is NOT having any of it.
Yes. From his first expression I thought he was going to get even more annoyed or potentially angry, but you see he gives the guy an out and smiles. Denzel has a totally cool and warm, though short, interview with an English footballer called Ian Wright on a radio show. Total opposite of this. I hope you check it out.
Bait bait bait and he did not take it, nice to hear a balanced person for once.
Well said
omg he's trying so hard xD it's like.. boy who beat you up in school? Racism is a real thing, but Danzel character has his reasons while anyone else have theirs. But this interview guy simply wanted to push HIS view of the character, which is his view of the world. Or better yet, it is a view of the world, but not the only one.
@Red 27 Honestly the way he speaks hear is a role model for anyone regardless of race..
Sovereign45 The “squad” is referring to 4 democratic politicians including AOC and Illham Omar. So as far as being out of touch...
@Red 27 would have been awesome i bet!
"There is no Hollywood, I'm not a part of any system. I am a human being".
He wouldn’t be sitting there if he wasn’t part of the system, maybe he is not as involved, not so interested and keeps from the centre but he is still part of the system in a multitude of ways.
Denzel Washington is grade A. "You can't legislate love." So powerful.
It is very relieving to hear for some reason
But it's very true about the politics within our government. And how they want to remain in power. That's the love he was asking about? When they talk about the racism in those times. And compared to now. The liberals want people to co-identify with their ideology's and beliefs. So they can remain in power.
I dont like what's being done to me. It's ruining my entire life.
It's way to negative and trying to put problems that I don't relate with as reasons I need to suffer for. I don't agree with me dying for others sins. A sin is something you do that hurts yourself. When you murder other people it hurts yourself. When you steal from others it hurts yourself your conscience and your convicted ego. I don't rob and murder people. The American media spy network does and they are hurting themselves and already were sentenced to death. They are going g to be banned from the internet sion to.
@@myessyallyahamericus8405 Let's pray that your right. And we can get back some sense of normalcy in our news reports. Good Lord willing? Sighhhh
See how he refused to be or play victim.... Take note!
Omar Milton it's not about playing a victim it's calling out racism when we see it. Are we suppose to ignore it? Fuck that racism will be call out always and forever.
Well said! Racism or no racism, never play the victim. Don't use racism as an excuse to be a leach on the government.
Learn the lesson from the movie.
It all starts from the family.
Doellis Rowe
Ask yourself this. How come there are many successful African-Americans in this country? Take Denzel for example. Sure there is racism. Did he let it stop him from getting to where he is now?
What's your excuse?
God gave him talent and wisdom! True heroes, do not need a suit or a cape. ❤️
yes indeed!!
The more I listen to Denzel, the more I love him.
Thats how I feel about Anthony Mackey
Thomas Sowell Denzel Washington jack brewer Shelby we still have so many black powerful man. Please support these men.
No kidding..he is awesome...he does not play the game...
Yeah. I've only listened to him twice. This and that last video. Very very impressive. The media have lede to dislike him prior to this however....
Thought he might be my first Hollywood celebrity twitter follow. No Twitter for Denzel however. Shocking.. I guess that might be related
You are so right. He has a beautiful soul besides being highly intelligent, a tremendous actor & an all around true to heart human being. What a great role model too.
So much race baiting. Denzel being the boss of self responsibility as usual.
The interviewer's mind: "Oh look, a black legendary actor, let's reduce him to to just talk about racism."
bruuuh
Why he gotta be black
By sending a foreigner 🤣
I mean…have you watched the film?
What Denzel clearly finds distasteful is that just because of his skin color, the topic of race is brought up. If he were white, it wouldn't. And that annoys him. He also, like my mom, doesn't want to accept discrimination as an excuse for not trying to excel.
Yeah he's sick of being called the victim why he sarcastically brought up that were here talking about a movie I'm in he's knows he's not a victim he's rich he has a good so he knows that card is bullshit
And I think we need to hear this more too
He shouldn’t accept this excuse because racism hasn’t held him back. Denzel is successful. He is a millionaire. He doesn’t ask for reparations and affirmative action.
@@timm285 that is because he is a real man and TRIED hard and MADE IT !!!
@@hugh920 he saying he has two hands and two feet just like you but he didn't make excuses for failure
"Maybe he wasn't good enough..." Assuming individual responsibility. The journalist doesn't understand that.
Every generation achieves more than the previous. That's the truth African American spirit. We dont and have never had the "victim mentality " some try to put on us, and do take personal responsibility. That's also what Denzel was saying.
The journalist understands. In my opinion, he is implying that Denzel Washington doesn't. And Washinton is having none of that conversation. Lack of respect and avoiding personal responsibility is two things that ail my country. Denzel Washington suffers from neither.
@@jerryneal9006 Yes, indeed.
maybe the journalist was given his job because of his skin colour not that he was good enough.
@@RachelM12345 -- Yes, I hear Blacks dont even have to attend school to get jobs. Just show up on hiring day.
The interviewer's ignorance was difficult to listen to.
No kidding, because he read “Obama’s book” he knows everything about race relations in the US...
Why have the Jews managed to survive and excel in a hostile culture? Because of positive elements within their culture. The Inquisition in Spain came about because of the envy of the “Old Catholics” for the Jewish Converts to Catholicism who thrived. It ended up as a racialist body dedicated not so much to doctrine correctness as to verifying that a family had no Jewish roots. In any case. the failure of Black Americans an to keep with with say Latinos, is because their families pass on too little to their children. Even middle class families cling too much to their grievances.
The phone in hand the whole interview is so dismissive
Unfortunately, this myopic view of Black people in the US and in the West in general is quite common in the Middle East! And the cruel irony is the Middle East is rife with some of the worst examples of bigotry, misogyny and injustice in the world.
But Denzel's answers was music to my ears.
Mad respect for this man! Denzel is a wise person. This interviewer, it appears to me, was so focused on seeing Denzel as a black man that he failed to see him as a fellow human being. Denzel handled himself so gracefully and charismatically while also managing to drive home his point in a gentle yet convincing manner. Respect!
Denzel is old and clueless. Out of touch.
That's a key word human being he said not Hollywood a human being. Talking to graduating students he said sometimes your going to fail.
@@boydbryant2353 Yes! I love that he pushes back against every instance of collectivization and tribalism!!
agreed
Denzel is there to talk about his new movie and all the presenter wants to do is try to bait him.
Another reason Denzel is such an amazing human, he tells it how it is no bullshit
Grip Craft and the problem was Obama. He divided this country, I never really heard about racism while Bush was president, after Obama took office slowly by slowly I've been hearing racism every where. Everything is racist now but there's not proof of that, yes there's some racist ppl but not what it was in the 60s
well there is that video of Morgan Freeman in an interview commenting on how he felt Obama created more racial division than helping to fix it
Grip Craft Obama never stopped bawling about racial disparity, yet he was president of the greatest country on the planet.
PS: FOR 2 TERMS
there is alot of proof of racism in america.
Jaydah Hayden where?
I love the way Denzel stands his ground and does not allow the interviewer to put words in his mouth or lead him to make conclusions he does not agree with. What a role model!
“You can’t legislate love” yo that was fire 🔥
Dear Lord...this reporter is on a straight line and refuses to divert.
Denzel Washington is smart and wise.
This interviewer has an agenda and narrative he is pushing. Denzel doesn't give into it.
All I hear is Satan's voice coming out of that white liberal's mouth.
@Steelerz Reign Supreme
@nasser d with middle eastern subtitles no less, OMFG.
All media outlets these days do.
i wanted to typ the exact same thing
Denzel was my favourite actor since The Hurricane in 1999. But I never realized how smart, intelligent and charismatic he is in real life. It's incredibly refreshing to see this escpecially during the 2020 situation where everyone just blames others.
I can agree.✊I'm definitely seeing How Deep..Honest..straight forward..and intelligent Denzel is Bro..it increases my respect 4 him more now.
Good observation brother.
Dude is clueless
Loved him since Glory in the 80s
“You can’t legislate love.” Best line spoken during this interview.
Denzel Washington is ONE OF THE BEST ACTORS of this CENTURY !!!! What a fantastic role model for ALL colors !!!!
Race baiting never looked so ridiculous
it does actually look like that all the time ..
isaac407, sounds like you have some serious issues that you are dealing with in your life to be missing the point. Topic of discussion was based on the movie Fences
@@johnjacques8519 the interviewer was asking "don't you think....?" over and over. That's classic race baiting to try to sway a point of view.
@Andrea Mendenhall sometimes most of the time racism still exist. Walk in my shoes for a minute. Walk in a store all eyes on you, 9/10 you will get pulled over driving an expensive car, when doing the right thing they will automatically think it's a scam, and I'm dead serious. I admit that things have improved from thelast generation
@@tristinhall1275the interviewer was bating as if things today were the same as yesterday. We improved big time due to laws being changed and oblished. Today rascim has calmed all the way down to prejudice which I can live with for now until the next genearation improves our society for the better
Not only do I love Denzel as an actor, I have a huge respect for him as a person, a rare breed.
"you can't legislate love. . . It takes time." wise words. . .
Denzel is an amazing teacher.
Theodore Campbell Well according to some people on here( I'm not one of them) you're a racist!
One of the few voices worth listening in Hollywood.
he is.
I wish there were conferences in which he pierces right into susceptible topics. Denzel always gives me the impression that he doesn't wrangle in his interviews due to unwanted media attention.
Bit late on this but brilliant how he handles this guy just wanting to here how racism and inequality is the only thing mapping our lives. I'm sure Denzel pissed of a couple of leftists with this interview.
True American right there. God bless him, good job raising this man the right way parents.
wiskyBOY123 At this time, we really need more influencers like him to speak up for what is right.
Isn't it amazing that the interviewer wants to portray so much negativity, but Denzel stays positive. We should celebrate successful stories of our brothers and make the future better for our children.
Such a classy man. Thank you Mr. Washington!
why precisely is he classy? And would you think he was classy if he said something you disagreed with? Is it possible for a human being to be classy and a genius without agreeing with one iota of their commentary.
I'm very impressed and appreciate Denzel's response to this reporter. Yes, I think Denzel's wisdom in the movie industry and I believe in life as well makes me believe he is well rounded and balanced to rise above situations. Everyone should not let hate but love and kindness be their goal everyday to live and overcome obstacles to be the best they can be. That's not being naive but being smart. GOD BLESS YOU Denzel. 😊
@@DrAlexanderHamilton "Why precisely is he classy?"
I saw him taking a tour of a site where they were building apartments for housing the families of wounded vets during their rehabilitation. One of several such felicities around the country. He asked how much it cost to build each one, to which the guy replied, 14 million dollars. Denzel whipped out his checkbook and wrote him a check, saying "Here, build two more".
Classy enough for ya Doc? Now tell us what the hell you've ever done for your fellow man.
He's a very classy guy and Christian.
Denzel is NO DUMMY. He can 👀right thew you. His face expressions says it all. In other words. WHAT ARE YOU REALLY AFTER.
the man would slay at poker
So true!!!
Bravo. Denzel is so succinct but thoughtful. He’s as good at communicating as he is at acting. My favorite answer was “you can’t legislate love”.
“I believe he has a right to say that.” That was funny and an interesting way to state an opinion
“We’re sitting in the Four Seasons talking about a movie”. Denzel is based! It’s all about the tremendous progress that has been made. Culture (and hard work) not race
Washington knows how bad it was. The truth is that the most ardent revolutionaries are members of a rising class. The problem is that once they get on top they become the oppressors. Bottom rail on top.
The interviewer, although I've seen worse, was a little annoying. Washington is one of those guys who just churns out these brilliant interviews no matter who's on the other side of it.
People like Denzel gives us hope that there is still some goodness in this world.
What a brilliant man. The anti-woke, open-minded, universal artist. I wish they were all like him.
You have no idea what “woke” means
Lol whatchu mean “they” haha
I don't care for the word woke. But I can guarantee you Mr. Washington has been aware of things forever. Would have been aware of you to not say "they". How many "they" do you know personally? That's the problem. We, Black people who I can only assume that's your "they" are always lumped together. It's as if we all are one big personality. Do you work with any Black people? Are they also your "they".
More than half the time the interviewer is asking unintelligent and Irrelevant questions concerning only racism while the movie is hardly about racism as Denzel mentioned. It was wonderful to see Denzel slaying the interviewers every attempt to bring-up racism and his attempt to portray racism as recent phenomenon Hats off to Denzel a perfect gentleman and a brilliant guy.
Thank you denzel for demolishing this attempt at imposing a victims mentality on black people by this reporter. We are not JUST victims, we are much more.
I absolutely despise this narrative that all a black person can be is a victim and our short comings are because of external factors.
We are as anyone else is, our failures are our own as are our Victories!!!!
You need to read interviews with August Wilson and learn what role RACE plays in his writing.
Denzel said a multitude of intelligent things here, but what he said about not being able to legislate love was perhaps the smartest. The Millennial generation DOESN'T understand that nothing can be imposed on another person. You can't make them love, and you certainly can't decide they have no place in society if they choose to not love. Actions are punishable. Attitudes are not. Anybody who understands the world even a little bit understands that the Millenial's desire to root out anyone whose ideas they deem to be undesirable equates to fascism. People like this interviewer are robots, while Denzel is a thinking human being.
You get it sir !
it's called bad behaviour sir. If 50 % of prisons are black i think that only shows how bad certain communnities are ( bad culture behaviour).
SuperPunch76
superb post ...
thumbs up 100////
Denzel does a magnificent job by not falling for the bait with this interviewer. He knows his stuff and stands by his beliefs. Respect.
"I'm not a park of any system, I'm a human being..." Until the masses get the courage to live by this credo, they will continue to hold themselves back from achieving their full potential.
Denzel is a class act - positive thinking leads to positive actions. Those who think negative usually stay behind those who find positivity in adverse situations. Bravo Denzel.
I have a lot of respect for Denzel. He's one of my all-time favorite actors. I love the fact that he wouldn't back down from his point of view, no matter what the interviewer tried.
Wow. There is absolutely no bitterness, hatred, negativity in this man. He refuses to be a victim. He is just a great great man. We are all lucky to have seen such a man in our life time.
Credit to Denzel for keeping his cool. I would’ve been pist if someone kept telling me I’m oppressed while making millions.
Denzel has it dead on correct!
No Denzel is showing what old niggas do when their testosterone get low and they don't want upset that check. Some good examples are Charles Barkley, Stephen A. Smith and Jason Whitlock.
@Melly I have been awake for a long time and that's why I call out that self hating shit to some Black people are on. I know my history well enough to call out the bullshit. I can recommend some books and videos if you are willing to learn.
It seems he didn't understand the movie. Racial discrimination was an undertone in the film. It was the atmosphere not the plot. The interviewer was not prepared to talk about something else.
Nopes. August Wilson writes about race as much as he writes about anything else, particularly in "Fences" and "The Piano Lesson" and "Joe Turner's Come and Gone".
Armstrong Hawkins I never said race wasn't part of the film. I said it's an undertone in the film, it's the atmosphere. It's there, but it doesn't take the spotlight.
I agree
Error Report he’s not white, he’s Latino. Or maybe he’s middle eastern. He has an accent. And he’s SUPER race baiting.
"We're at the Four Seasons . . . " I appreciate Mr. Washington's perspective.
I like Denzel, never looks to play the race card, but states his case, is balanced and fair. The interviewer here is trying so hard to get him to go down a certain path, Denzel is having none of it. Good on you pal.
Ha! Denzel, just wouldn't bite that dam race bait!
You can't control someone that is in control of their own thoughts and emotions and the choices they make. To be a free thinker in the mono-culture of Hollywood is extremely rare no matter who you are. To be at it this long and at this level -speaks not only to his talent, but to his character as a person. If he wasn't a straight up good dude, knowing the way they do things in Hollywood, I'm sure he would have been 'influenced' to tow the company line, and this race baiting excuse of an interview would have provided just such an opportunity. That's just not how people have a conversation, that could have turned into an awkward debate. But Denzel handled it on an intellectual level, while also making it seem like a friendly interview about a movie. To the extent possible. Despite that d bags best efforts from beginning to end - otherwise... Denzel is the man.
Got to love Denzel. This interviewer is trying to bait him in to basically saying fuck white people and that just doesn't work.

Zach Snyder, It's much harder for a black man and here are some of the reasons: it can be from other black people who fucked up and messed it up for the rest of us, prejudice, and discrimination. Blacks have to come together collectively to build so they can hire their own and also not discriminate by providing opportunities to others

I admire Denzel´s view of not choosing the victim path, instead taking charge of his own life and conquering his own world, adding to the world with his talent. Thats a true role model if you ask me.
The woman acting opposite him is just wonderful What passion! So real. That comes from her soul.
Denzel has always been too intelligent to play the victim. He won't say that there isn't elements of discrimination to deal with, he just keeps a level perspective.
