Firefighter here. Foam is usually generated by adding foaming agent to water which then is sprayed out of a so called "foam pipe". The adding of foam-agent is often done in the water system of the truck, so residues of the agent stays in this system. When you spray water after you haved used the internal foam system only once (and trust me, you will never get rid of the foaming agent) your water looks like this. They should've known that....

I saw the F-35 getting foamed, the fireman accidentally pressed the switch for foam instead of the switch for water that was right next to it.
The switches were identical...it must be said that the fireman had to rush for the ceremony because minutes before there was an emergency
where an F-16 had to do an emergency landing because of smoke in the cockpit and this fireman was responding to the emergency.
The engine had to be flushed a couple of times and was checked by Pratt & Whitney.
Pilot Ian Knight had to stop the plane because he could not see anything through the foam.
The stealth-coating was not damaged by the foam, this was a possibility because of the corroding effect the foam could have.

The Greenpeace one also annoys me because on a per seat basis that 777 is really fuel efficient. Something like 80+ miles per gallon per seat on a flight between Paris and New York. Yes we absolutely need to be working towards fully sustainable solutions, and we are, but we can't let perfect (completely sustainable) be the enemy of good (modern really efficient engines) while we work that way.

04:40 That motion, with the dip to the side, was exactly the motion that preceded the 1993 Gripen (*) crash in Stockholm.
There it developed to a PIO, and the aircraft eventually pitched up into an extreme alpha of about 90 degrees. With all airspeed gone, the pilot left the aircraft by the escape system. The aircraft fell onto an unoccupied piece of land and burned. The only injuries and damage were light burning from splashing fuel, and a few bikes that got crushed.
The cause was eventually traced to limitations in the control system, and extreme control stick movements of the pilot that made the control surfaces reach their rate limit, which - combined - led to the PIO and departure from controlled flight. This was corrected and Gripen has since gone on to have a perfect service record with no accidents attributable to faults with the aircraft.
...except for the involuntary ejection in Luleå 2007.
(*) Pronunciation guide: Gripen is pronounced "gree-pen", equal stress on the syllables, not "grippen". Similarly, its "grandmother" Draken is "draa-ken", not "dracken". And - just to mess things up - the immediate predecessor Viggen is exactly opposite to those two: "vigg(e)n", one hard stressed syllable, nearly swallowing the 'e'.

Just one comment from one avgeek to another: I believe the fumes coming out of the 747 engines in video two is the inhibiting fluid that gets used to fill up the fuel system of an engine when it gets transported. The fluid protects the system from corrosion and burns off 2min or so after starting the engine. I test jet engines for a living and at least it looks like that when we do it :)

Video #3 that is an overhauled engine, years ago we used to call it de-pickling the engine. In the Air Force they used to put a preserving fluid in the engine for storage.
We used to be required to have a fire truck during start up, we used to get flames at times very cool at night.
I used to be the guy on the ground with a headset talking to the guys running the engines, I did that too once I got my E4 promotion.
I imagine the crew chiefs of that F35 were not happy having to clean that mess off, those aircraft have very expensive composite panels.

@@dfarmer_ If you ask me, Greenpeace is almost like a terrorist organisation. A good deal of their most active members must be in for the thrill and anarchy. I've been supporting a real nature conservation organisation (local for my home country) for many years. That organisation has got a lot of good done since their founding, but not by breaking the law and hurting people. I'd never support Greenpeace in any way. If you live in a tyranny, extralegal means might be the only way to go, but not in functional democracies.

    • @xplanefinland26
      @xplanefinland26 Před 3 lety

I guess in the 737, you just close the window and are good to go. The hatch that you can see outside the plane is connected to the same system that the lever inside the cockpit uses (And opening a window from inside the cockpit is nothing out of ordinary).
