      as a much higher rated player I will say that it is more interesting to watch lower level games because they are easier to analyze and understand (you look for more basic tactics and big mistakes rather than deep positional lines) and you don't know what they will play while with a 2700 you can pretty much just expect the best move in many positions

      @@Lawrence_Zhou I really like watching games of my elo because it is easier to see what kind of mistakes you need to avoid or how to see common tactics.
      High elo GM games are also interesting,but their ideas are pretty more complicated and many players cannot really understand many moves. The best thing that you can learn from masters is how to win a position with small advantages.

      80%+ of chess players are below 1200 (as Chess com stats show) so it makes sense they like watching their peers more than watching top-level games where most of the moves don't make any sense to them.

      I have a similarly high rating and I was actually impressed. There were some terrible blunders, but their positional understanding definitely feels like 1600+.

    Besides the popularity it brings, these streamers are so relatable in terms of their chess to most people. Watching GMs play is cool, but if you don't understand half of the strategy or tactics in these games, it's neither good entertainment nor very instructive (unless explained by Levy in recaps - then it's the best of both). Good times for chess!

      Yeah felt like a bit of an overreaction. I read the comments most are pretty benign. A lot of people don’t like Pokimane which is understandable, they can dislike and unsubscribe if they choose.
      Gotham came off as a bit petty and seems like he’s falling into the trap of many creators by focusing on the 1% negative and ignoring the 99% positive

      Queens Gambit is terrible too, online chess making it accessible is definitely the bigger factor. If it was just the tv show I don't think anything would change.

      at this point many of the gatekeepers just specifically target tiktokers and large female creators and they try to gatekeep them from literally everything because apparently "Tiktokers only do it for clout so they devalue the game" as if using tiktok means you deserve to have to live a miserable life in poverty and can't do anything else you enjoy. Shame on them and then they call everyone who is against their views simps. also btw there is nothing wrong with tiktokers themselves they are defined by much more than a cringey dance challenge where you go naked while a random vulgar rap song plays in the back

      There is technically more action in NASCAR than F1 even though in NASCAR everyone is just turning left around an oval. I'd say Pogchamps has the same entertainment value as watching NASCAR.

      Excitement is just like beauty... It's in the eye of beholder... Like no IM / GM care for quality of chess in such events and are really happy to see their profession being appreciated. (Yes there are some old nonce who want it to be a stoopid guardian of chess from normally people)
      Whereas us amateurs and fans love to see the competition and the chess.

    Most viewed Chess match ever is a title well deserved! I never watch Twitch but I wanted to see these matches because I saw epic clips from last year and I recent started playing Chess online.
    I was honestly a intimidated to go on Twitch because I'm unfamiliar with the site (and the chat is WILD from what I've seen) but I'm glad I saw it live! It was a very cool new experience indeed!

    I think this is great. Keep doing the pogchamps recaps, very very fun to watch. I love the seriousness with which you treat these games and how you give them the proper analysis that they arguably deserve. Impressive to see streamers like sQc finding moves like Rd8, and as a roughly Northernlion level player (so slightly stronger than most in this event) it's super impressive to see these people regularly finding moves that I probably wouldn't

    I love watching new people play chess, it got me back into it after not playing for awhile. Sometimes it’s hard to watch them blunder, but it also helps me spot where they could have gone instead.

I've been getting back into chess recently (as many of us have), and I can't seem to break 1300.     Honestly huge props to XQC for the massive development in his game from the last time he played in pogchamps, I'm happy to see how well he stuck with chess! Could be an outside contender for winning the whole thing, especially with ideas like rd8
