I've been using some old PaperWhite for almost a decade and I finally decided to upgrade. Super excited!
Literally motivated to do this by the fact that my sleep habits are awful, so I'm deciding to cut off all screens an hour before bed and do some reading instead, hopefully to get more quality sleep. I've always liked the convenience of an eReader and kudos to Amazon, my old PaperWhite is still going strong, but I don't have it on me! Being away for college, it's sitting back home. So I decided to look into getting a new one and the bigger screen, warm lighting, and improved PPI/contrast vs. my old one seem like a big enough upgrade that I pulled the trigger.

Excellent video; can't wait for the next one.
Let me guess... it's going to be something related with Readwise is it not? Maybe in conjunction with Notion?

I do use both Readwise and Notion, but neither one is critical to my note taking system for what I read. I only use Notion for project, task, and habit management.
I love Readwise, but I found if it's easy to let the same thing happen. You get a bunch of highlights and don't do anything with them. My system requires quite a bit of effort - but is definitely worth it.

I got the oasis, and I'm quite happy with it. Oddly enough I've actually been "reading" more with the speechify web service, especially if I need to get through the information fast and get the gist of it before deciding if i want to dive deeper into the content or not. Like every form of content, there are books which are just empty calories and not worth the page count tied to it, especially "info" books. So this helps me quickly skim or speed read through it.

I should have jumped on the signature edition when it first came out, but I waited until Black Friday thinking it would go on sale, but they didn't put that one on sale :( So, I decided to go with the newest Oasis because I think the one handed grip for the Oasis is more fit to my style of holding my device. However, I still love my 2017 Kindle Paperwhite (despite how slow it is at everything) so I plan to continue to use it as well, depending on different scenarios. In the next Oasis, I would like to see: 8-inch E-Ink Carta 1200 screen, stylus support for taking notes, USB-C, and Overdrive integration. I own Kpw3, Kindle Voyage, Oasis 2,3, Pwt 5. I love Oasis’s physical buttons and design, as well as its glass screen and metal back, giving it just much more premium feel. voyage is like a squeezed size Oasis, it still has the clearest screen contrast and resolution. If Voyage line is still updating, it would clearly win Pwt series and even Oasis.

Get out of my mind! I've literally just been wrestling with the choice of a Paperwhite or Oasis so this video is very timely. I'm not looking to upgrade my own Paperwhite (although the quicker response time is tempting) but I'm deciding what to buy my mum for Christmas. I think I will go for the Oasis as she prefers physical buttons and the Oasis has two for page turning. I'm not a big fan of all the swipe controls in my Paperwhite as it doesn't feel responsive enough to make them work without some annoyance... I wish I had a physical button for going up one layer in a menu system, double press to reach the home page. I keep swiping up and changing the font size when I want to go to my library, etc.
My mum pointed out that arthritis and touch screen controls don't always work well together either, so it can also be an accessibility issue.

Yeah, they're both good (but completely different) designs. It sounds like your mother would definitely do better w/ an Oasis.
I liked the page turn buttons, but most of the time it was quicker for me to just tap the screen to switch pages. So I used them less and less over time.
I hear you on up/down buttons for the menu though. Scrolling up or down is the worst UI experience on the kindle. It feels completely unnatural.

I’m disabled and the weight of books is why I love ebooks. There were just so many books I couldn’t read due to my disability. I never hold my Kindle when I’m in my home. I use a Flippy Fun Size to hold it. And I rarely ever touch the screen because I have a page turner. You may want to look into this for your mom. The clicker is big and requires practically no pressure to turn the page yet it isn’t so easy that you’re constantly turning pages on it’s own. My main reading style is lying down, either holding up the device or using my tablet holder to go completely hands free (btw, these tablet holders are life changing. You never have to hold your device up.) Im worried that the Oasis would not fit well in my holder due to non uniform edges. I don't know for sure though. On Amazon they were offering a $25 trade-in for my old model making the cost of the new one only $76. So I assume they in turn are recycling these trade-ins for sale as “refurbished”. At least I am pretty sure they’re not tossing them in to the trash after giving you $25 for it. I updated not because of incremental upgrades but because of major upgrades. I could get the Oasis through Amazons Refurbished Program even cheaper than the new Paperwhite. Many people are now praising the paperwhite over the Oasis, but I never know how much of this ratings is because of the price. Anyone here to tell me what they would do in my situation? I like the design of the Oasis and the physical buttons, but the new Paperwhite is now faster than the Oasis, isn't it? Will that be noticeable?

    • @KeliFancher
      @KeliFancher  Pƙed 2 lety +2

Sorry for the later reply, I'm not sure if you've made a decision or not but here's my thoughts.
If the two devices were the same cost, I personally would still go with the Paperwhite. As I mentioned in the video USB-C port, faster page turns, and more comfortable design all make the Paperwhite a winner for me.
That said, I really do miss the page turn buttons - and if that's an important feature for you then you should get the Oasis. It's my belief that you won't notice the different page turn speeds unless you have them side-by-side.
I am looking forward to seeing what Amazon does with the premium Kindle line in the future.

I updated from my 2015 Kindle 8th gen to this 2021 Paperwhite 11th gen model yesterday (8/25/22). The saving the planet part is still in play here I think, because on Amazon they were offering a $25 trade-in for my old model making the cost of the new one only $76. So I assume they in turn are recycling these trade-ins for sale as “refurbished”. At least I am pretty sure they’re not tossing them in to the trash after giving you $25 for it. Also, I updated not because of incremental upgrades but because of major upgrades. Much more text on screen, noticeably faster (the lag on older models is annoying) and sealing it for me
dark mode. I read a lot at night in bed. Dark mode is highly desirable.

the paperwhite has a big problem for me , the bezel left and right is far to thin now, I tried and found myself to often touching the screen turning pages without wanting too, I hate this, the reading experience was more annoying than on the older paperwhite. Also the Oasis has the power on top which is more convenient. I am going to wait for an Oasis 2022. So I disagree, the papaerhite 2021 is not handsdown the better device, the reading experience is still superior on the Oasis. Is it worth the price difference, probably not, but if one can wait a few month, the new Oasis is not far away anymore ... or wait for a discount stock sale ... :) (oh the Oasis has less weight too ...)

I didn't like how Amazon locks you into its ecosystem (I believe it mainly reads ".azw" files by default), has ads that you have to pay to remove, etc. I also liked that, on the Kobo, you could swipe up and down to change the brightness, instead of having to go into the setting. I also believe that the battery life on the Kobo is better. I think the Oasis has a better adaptive brightness/colour temperature, but overall, I thought the Kobo offered a better value.
