- I took a brand new 2018 Honda Grom and rode it across the USA from California to Florida, most of it full throttle, in the middle of summer, with low oil. This is the result of that extreme break-in period to prove if you need to baby your motorcycle during the break in period or if you can just ride it as you ride normally.

If you know how to replace spark plugs you know how to do a compression test.
(take spark plug out, put gauge in spark plug hole, crank the engine, see result)

Technically you’re supposed to add a little oil to the cylinder to assure proper ring seal and hold throttle wide open whilst cranking. But good on ya bud for the smart ass comment
Pretty much as I would expect as far as wear goes. Break in periods aren't important and engines are designed to be able to run at full throttle near the Rev limit in a desert for long periods of time without damage.
Before you reuse that cylinder see if you can catch your finger nail on the scoring that was on it, if you can that's when you'll want to replace it.

Honestly the brake in period will affect peak power. Ultrababying it won't get you to peak power but just pinning the throttle from the start will end up doing stuff like contributing to an engine burning a little more oil.
Modern engines are fairly resistant thankfully and it's the difference between burning 20ml of oil in 500miles and 100ml in the same.
Its MUCH more relevant in larger motors in a higher state of tune.

@@KidNamedKuddy I really wish some dark ops Honda engineers would cram the rebel 300 engine into a Grom. Increase the fuel tank a bit, it'll be a miniature rocket. Big engine to cram in that little thing but man it's power to weight ratio would be insane

It's not good to be impacting on your bolts. Especially at the torque these are at it's just not nesesary. Best to use a socket wrench or torque wrench and set it back to spec.

Although the video is interesting from the standpoint that it shows just how durable the Grom is, it really doesn't do justice to the proper disassembly of an engine or even what to look for. A compression test (although probably not needed at the mileage you did) shows possible wear to valves and valve guides as well as the piston, piston rings, and cylinder. All gaskets and O-rings should be changed just for good measure. It's a real bugger to reassemble an engine only to end up with a leak that wasn't there in the first place. I would never ever break bolts with an impact driver like you use in the video, especially the first time an engine is taken apart as some assembly lines use the max torque on assembly and your method could end up with snapped off bolts. Best to break by hand then us a driver to speed things up. What would be a good follow up is to take a Grom clone and see how the wear compaired to the real deal.
I agree the dude really has no idea what he’s doing and the way he pronounces words like scorching instead of scoring and naming every little thing he find and pulls out of the engine a bushing really confirms he’s got no idea 😂
That’s just nuts riding a Grom across country. That had to hurt.

Hi Eric, compression testing is super simple and testers are cheap. Check it out when you get time. If you opt to not change the piston the compression test would have given an indication of the old rings condition. Also, grab and feel the connecting rod, should be no play in any direction, just to make sure the bottom end/bearings is tight.
Will do thanks. I’m going to go ahead and replace the piston and jug to show how to do it but for sure I’ll test out that rod and maybe do a compression test once we get everything back together. Unless it’s something better to do after break in?

You should really replace that gasket every oil change dude
Not required, I've cracked open this case too many times to count, if you use my method the gasket is fine and doesn't leak. By all means do what you're comfortable with though.
@@Photogromer not something I'd be comfortable with, on a grom its not so much of a worry I tend to deal with bigger and more powerful engines though so different rules with higher pressures and more stress..
Well yeah, my experience on this is based on Groms and not bigger motors, so I can't speak to the life of the gasket on those but on Groms it's perfectly fine if the gasket comes off in one piece.
Sounds like the kind of thing I'd use to keep the old one as a spare, not best practice, certainly not Workshop manual advised but potentially useful to know. Sounds like it would be worth marking the gasket if taking the bike in for a service as if you've worked it out scummy mechanics will be using it and charging people. For new.

Any advice my grom has 2,500 miles on it. Seems to be burning oil after I ride it all day 200 miles or so. Mind u oil was dirty?

For what guys are using these little bikes for, Honda should really upgrade the Grom to 200cc imo.
If it doesn't burn oil it's not a Honda
There was a time when Honda cared about reliability. My old accord has 175k Mike's and doesn't burn oil. I'm hearing guys buying brand new Honda cars and they burn oil by the 4-5th oil change and Grom riders by the second oil change they burn oil. This isn't okay and it's unacceptable to me. Honda needs to stop using the same soft buttery metal GM uses that causes their vehicles to both cost too much while under delivering in reliability unlike the past

Interesting but the teardown of the top end of one very low compression grom engine does not prove anything regarding break in.....
Just follow the manufacturer recommendation on engine break in. They designed and built the engine. They probably know what's best for it....

@@Photogromer eh. Not really. You'd need multiple samples in a controlled environment and a quantifiable way to judge the results such as measuring wear with precision instruments, oil analysis etc in order to make an actual determination.
That's why I say leave the decision to the manufacturer. They actually have the resources to perform such tests.

Here I am looking up info on rebuilding my Wave 125i engine after 80,000km / 50,000 miles.
The Grom has it's engine from that bike - that's why the Grom has drilled and tapped holes at the bottom ;)
Those engines can do some serious distances if you take care of them.

Nah did that last year. This one is staying stock 125 for reliability and wheelies.
Sad thing about the Grom is as soon as you upgrade it power wise it knocks down reliability and it's only built to last like 50k miles max if you really really take care of it. That's why I think it would be wild if they could cram the rebel 300 into it. That way I can go 75mph up a hill on the same small comical platform. I really love the groms size but I hate it's speed

He took a brand new grom across the country. Quite the feat for a 125cc. Many of us are curious as to how it held up and what the inside looks like.

@@well_as_an_expert_id_say I mean I just rebuilt the top and bottom end of my DL650 3 weeks ago at 120,000 miles but I guess you're right. I also rebuilt the top and bottom end of a CBR250R I bought with a bad engine in the Fall. How do I become more of a motor guy?
Well a cross country trip is a lot for a grom. Although it's weird to me it even burns oil after going across the country brand new just one time. Usually naturally aspirated Honda engines don't burn oil until they're old as sliced bread unless you skip oil changes
