Finland's show in Malmö will be A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!!!! Even if they just keep it as it is, but I think they might come up with something more crrrrrrazy!!!!! Käärijä came 2nd and he didn't really sing, so W95MAN should be major success.

      Käärijä was just one example.
Finland has had Blind Channel, rock (The Rasmus), punk (the shortest song ever performend in ESC by Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät, band, which members are disabled, public would have voted them to the finals, juries didnt). And of course Lordi. Finns really stand out in ESC with their variety of choices.

Very good point! It is way too easy to see this as a simple joke act, but I think it’s more about catharsis and how to help people let go. If you look past the skin coloured underwear you can see he is slaying it on that stage, connecting to the audience and building up the tension.

So, I was there, at Nokia Arena. We went from Poland to Finland for this :D and let me tell you - you wouldn't be surprised if you were there. The level of the energy and the smile on the faces spoke for itself. We talked to Finns that were rooting for Sara before coming to the show. After live performances they still thought that her performace was good (Because it was), but just not... intense enough? They were certain No Rules will win after live show. And No Rules was just something totally different that made people smile a lot. I guess this is what made it.
And another thought - No Rules leaves you either in "I love it" or in "I hate it" state. And if you love it, you will vote. Paskana would leave A LOT of people indifferent. No love, no hate, no votes :(

I thought it might win so I wasn't that surprised. I'm quite a fan of the song and the performance was great, it's currently my 4th place for Eurovision.

I think there was problems with the camera and also i would say that their producers or other people didnt do their homework really well in terms of getting a song to be liked by Finns. The song was way too polished by the producers and the dancing part and all just doesnt work to us. In general all the super polished billboard music styles dont do well here. We want real guitars and real rocknroll, even if its not perfect. Also the "dancing with my demons" theme doesnt really work either. Finns might have some mental difficulties in the dark land but we dont like to dwell on it

Considering he is a renowned contemporary artist with works shown in major galleries (and he owns one), it is a very cathartic entry. After this maxim, there can ever be nothing left to be more embarrassed about, thus we're all free to be and do whatever we want because you cannot top/down this. I cannot stop laughing while sinking to the ground beneath. Performing on Eurovision without any trousers on and being unable to find them is certainly a topic for nightmares - and he wins through it!
Or as @finnishculturalchannel phrased it perfectly:
"Well, you know how it is. It's Saturday and you're going out to party, but your favourite and only party pants haven't dried up yet after you've washed them. Maybe the air has been humid, whatever, who knows, but then they dry up just in time, you put them on and it's like you got magic in your pants."
I applaud this work getting shown at the largest stage possible. However good or bad it ranks is irrelevant cos it just goes full-on bonkers.

I always like to say there's three ways to win Eurovision - getting the most points (official), becoming "the song, that should've won" (long-term, salt), and joining the "Joke Entry" Hall of Fame (crowd favorite, infamy).
This entry is absolutely going for option three, and good for them. Eurovision is at its best, when it exposes us to acts, artists, and sounds we'd never have heard of otherwise, not just whatever's the most polished and likely to travel internationally. I love this whole performance, and will likely love it for several years to come, just because it's goid, dumb, nostalgic fun. Can't go wrong with winning long-term, even if you don't get the trophy in the short-term. 😂

I voted for Sara but I'm happy about the winner, their staging is hilarious lmao, I can't help but smile when I see it. Hopefully they don't change too much of it. Also as a singer I was disappointed in Sara's vocals, they were off quite a few times even though there were good parts too. I bet if they were perfect she might've won. Henri Piispanen (the singer of No Rules) sang really well and stood out with that too.
I'm a bit sad though that we don't seem to be too high on most eurofan's lists, very different experience compared to last year. 😁

I voted for Sexmane, but almost voted for Windows95man. I love the chaotic (but quite purposefully so) energy on stage, Henri's vocals, and how fun and catchy the song is. We've never done well in the ESC with a serious song, and Sara was visually too similar to Loreen's performance last year, so it was a no-go for me. We may not win with this, but we are sending a blast of fun, and that is a win in my books.

I was sitting there watching UMK, thinking "well I laughed my ass off and sang along during Win 95 performance, but surely they will send Cyan Kicks or something". Anfd then it dawned on me that if I had that much fun during it, then why wouldn't they pick up the phone for it, instead of the other ones. And I'm sure the same thing will happen at Eurovision. This was my favourite song out of all of them but I had really resigned myself to it not winning so I was kinda mad when they got their televote first and were sitting at the top of the scoreboard. I was fully expecting this to be like portion boys last year where it ended second thanks to the televote and I was mad because I thought I was being given some false hope of this winning when I *knew* Sara was going to sweep in and take it. I haven't felt this genuinely, unexpectedly excited about a result since Albania qualified in 2018. Like I'll be real it didn't matter what Finland picked they were going to be my new number 1 but I was so happy.

For me they are perfect for Eurovision. Eurovision lacks controversial and funny acts. I don't understand why some people consider only classic songs to be quality performances. Their performance was amazing. My mood improved after watching it. Nostalgic music, but the outfit is top notch too. The lyrics make sense. "Be who you want, no matter what others think" is what I took away from their song. The egg is interesting because it was inspired by Finnish mythology. Henri's singing is fine for me. They will definitely stand out at Eurovision. They won't impress the jury because the jury just doesn't recognise this style. Last year was a very good example where the jury preferred Sweden (could it be the anniversary of Abba?) In May they will put on a crazy show and entertain the audience. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

but i think you're right! this will be a lot of fun at eurovision!! i'm wondering if some of the other "joke entries" (estonia, depending who qualifies / netherlands, people might lump that vibe together) will end up taking some of the love/televote from finland? it's definitely pandering to a good televote bc no way juries will give it anything 😅😂

    • @intensemint7800
      @intensemint7800 Před 3 měsíci

Same, I scrambled to find another fav during the NF and was horrified how poorly the staging and some camera work was handled, like wtf happened?
I had Sini and Sexmane as my favs, then Sara, but none stood out beforehand. In NF Sini's live performance was all over the place, hated the staging, lighting and outfit. Too much stuff taking away the focus from the singing. And Sexmane's choreo was so messy, which pissed me off, bc I loved his song. Glow was good... but nothing very Finnish, a nice summer song, though. CK didn't register at all (and Hurricane was better). MG&N I didn't care for. Most of the live performances weren't well thought out. Sara's live vocals were off and I didn't like the dark lighting either.
W95man was the one with the solid, fun performance that night, made me laugh so hard I cried, and I'm not ashamed it's our representative. Why should I be? The criticism against it isn't a personal attack against me. People's tastes are different. But there shouldn't be attacks against the performers either, let's not repeat the mayhem of last year. I think part of this vitriol online is that some, more conservative minded people have this strange notion things have to be prim and proper, taken seriously, and if things are fun, they're automatically not taken seriously. Most people have a need to be accepted, and for some the fear of ridicule and being ostracized, or someone being different is a huge hurdle to cross. I think it's this and W95man's chaotic energy which sets people off, but he does have a message in the song to not let prejudices and other people's opinions hold you back from being yourself, trying out new stuff that might be crazy, but also possibly awesome. We should lean into it more, like W95man. He's a litmus test for the ESC crowds to see how much of a conformist people are. No rules! ❤️

I'm finnish and this is my view:
    - Sini: one of my favorites, but the singing was kinda bad and i didn't feel the same energy just like you said. Just felt kinda bland.
    - Jesse and Sexmane: actually sounded nice and they could actually sing!!! But aren't really eurovision songs.
    - Sara: I had high hopes for this but there was no emotion nor energy in the performance... also the singing wasn't that good and staging was weird. I was still sure it's gonna win, I thought i'm just being picky, but clearly everyone else saw it too.
    - CK: there was no emotion either. I didn't feel anything. Wasn't a big fan of the song either.
    - MG&Nublu: still my favorite, will continue listening to it but gosh, it didn't really work live.
    - W95M: was literally the only performance that gave me a smile and made me feel something. I couldn't believe they won at first, but at the end of the day, looking back at all the performances, it was pretty clear winner :D

I was shocked my second favorite song of the entires season (Sara’s) was left on the table... thanks for your honest and reasonable videos, Shane (I know I’ve said it a lot, but it is still true).

Going in UMK MY TOP 2 were Cyan Kicks and Sini, but they live performances just didn't work. Both Sara and Windows95man had the best staging that night. But I must confess, after Windows95man I said they will win, and I didn't even liked the song before.

Windows95man, Sexmane and Jesse Markin had the best live performances all the way, even though the songs were not the best ones in music videos. And Sara Siipola sadly had kind of bad vocals, like it really hit my ears that it did not sound so good at high notes, and the song would have needed perfect singing :/ Also check the show starter and half-time songs too, those were the best parts of the UMK this year! Like the stagings in those were better than average Eurovision Half-time stagings 🤯
I voted for Sara Siipola, but im happy Windows95man won because it was just the best performance and the song is still better than most of the chosen Eurovision songs this year >_>. Italy for example chose another boring song (which for some unbeliveable reason is fan favorite again like Italy always end up being no matter what they send) for the 3rd year in row. Also the Windows95man staging is brilliant. Its not really just chaotic jumping around the stage half-naked as it may seem. It has so many intellectual details, that you probably miss or don't realize in the first watch (which may not work very well in Eurovision though as most people watch it first time).

There is a speculation that Windows95Man would go to Malmö as "MM95man", which is clear to all finns and a nice sting for the swedes - we won the ice hockey championship for the first time in the year 1995 against in Sweden, AGAINST SWEDEN 8) It is the benchmark of finnish hockey.
As a finn i dont think finland is sending people to win eurovision per se. I think finland likes to show off weird humour as well as talent. That being said, i think many people in europe think much more songs in finland as joke entries when in fact they are a bit more serious for finns. Käärijä is an excellent example of that. No joke. Lordi had similar kind of questioning.
Also, I think many countries could send this exact same song: just with serious faces and sexy babes. I really cant see finland doing that. The song itself is great, so it is very much a matter of difference in humour.

The same thing happened as the previous year. There was one act, which was clearly above the rest when it came to staging and live performances. Probably partly a budget thing, but it's a bit frustrating that they can't get the staging to same level for all the artists. Sini's staging was one of those, which didn't fully support the concept of the song. The drama, energy and partly the story either wasn't there. I was hoping for some chocking Jekyll and Mrs. Hyde color and lighting theme play with each peeled layer. Carving something to that grand piano with a knife while wallowing on top of it would have been rebellious sight. Also the costume changes should have been swift like magic tricks. For Cyan Kicks I thought there would definitely be a video floor to create the illusion of that water, which was the main feature on the video. The shoe thing felt rather lame for a shock value. For me, the staging for Sara was the most frustrating one. I still can't believe they took one figure of speech expression from the lyrics and built that actual planetary system around her. It felt like some awkward transition and alienating science fair thing. They had the large space and the audience there to stage the feeling of hurt, loneliness and disconnection with the rest of world the song is about. it definitely didn't come through the TV. Also, It felt like she was just performing the song rather than living it like it felt on the video. On top, the staging on Käärijä's and Erika Vikman's, Pilvi Hämäläinen's and Katri Helana's sideshow performances were more or less the highlights of the show. Windows95 isn't used as a trademark anymore, but Eurovision might not allow the logo. Even though there's Audi-Man, Volvo-Man, Transit-Man and all kind of men describing personalities though brands and products. He has something else stored, though, if that happens. Malmö's contest will probably lean to conservative nostalgia, so let's see how this different kind of take on nostalgia goes down there. The most delightful moment for me in Windows95man's live act was when he ran around in the background like he wasn't supposed to be in the picture right then-or at all. That to me underlined the embracing empowered everyman amateur oomph hour feeling the song is about. Maybe he'll be Every95man, if he can't compete as Windows95man. Or just Björn.

I agree, Sini deserved to fight for the win. Amazing how badly she was given points. But she was first on stage and the show was a bit messy. Also Sara was favorite for many but the performance was not as good. Only one that really slayed the show and the song, was Windows95man and Henri and therefore the show won over most of the people. The songs are great on the radio but on stage is something else. Nobody would vote for an unfinished show. Sara sang her song very well in the rehearsal but the act itself didn't sound that good. And UK was the only one to give 12 points to Win95man. The few ones that gave any points.

Aha, I saw the notification on my phone and came straight here. Not sure I have ever been this early 🤣
I was Team Sara all the way through, so naturally I am a bit disappointed here (tho Windows95man was my number 2 and only other one I would have been happy to see win, so I am not as angry as a lot of the fandom are, and there are a lot of angry people out there 🤣). That being said, Sara got totally robbed on Saturday. The live performance was stunning and the staging in my opinion was amazing. The juries would have eaten this up like they did with Alika last year, and I genuinely think this could have got a strong televote too. I don't see it as a Eurovision winner, but it could have got them another Top 5 for sure.
So on to 'No Rules', yeah the staging was cheesy as heck, but then so is the song, it very heavily leans into that 90's boyband cheese with the main vocal, whilst Windows95man is doing whatever the heck it is that he is doing on stage. I get why people don't like it, it is treading a fine line on the novelty/cheese tightrope, and many people feel this harks back to the bad days of the mid 00's and the novelty entries then. That being said, this is a total guilty pleasure for me. How will it do with Eurovision? The juries are going to absolutely sink this, but the televote will be fab for sure, 90's nostalgia is back in afterall. On the subject of juries, whilst this did come last with the jury vote, it should perhaps not surprise you that the UK jury gave this their 12 (you can always trush the UK to go for the novelty 🤣)
Yeah Sini's staging was messy as heck, they seemed to try and throw as many different things at it as they could, and for me it just didn't really work. Last in the televote by such a large margian is quite harsh though.
Cyan Kicks, gotta be honest here, if we hadn't have had 'Hurricane' a few years back I think I would have been more onboard with this. But for me, everything about 'Dancing with Demons' was just two steps below 'Hurricane'. The song, staging, live performance, it just all paled in comparison. Hoping they return again with something more in the vein of 'Hurricane'.
As for the others, 'Glow' was competently performed, but the song was never for me, 'Mania' had pretty poor staging and performance for me and similarly, 'Vox Populi' was a bit of a disappointment for me live. In fact, when everyone was hyping 'Vox Populi' as the potential 'novelty' entry to do well, I always felt 'No Rule's felt like a much more likely candidate for that role, and so it proved to be.
Oh, and the split is 25% Jury/75% Tele, I think this needs to be looked at next year though as it kinda makes the jury next to useless. Sara could have got maximum from the jury and Windows95man could have got absolutely nothing, and I think Sara would have only won by 2pts with those televote scores, if my maths was correct. And it was not as if Windows95man destroyed the televote like Karrija or Blind Channel did. I really think UMK need to ask themselves what the point in even including a jury is if their role is so miniscule.

@@ShanesEurovisionReview An important note there is that while the Jury have to give points in the usual sort of buckets (12pts max per jury), the televote is not limited in that way, they get to give an amount of points proportional to the percentage televotes that came in.
That increases their power even more in comparison to the Jury, with the theoretical max points given by the Jury being 84 (12 points from every Jury), and the televote being 881 (100% of the televote, not likely, I know). Even if we consider a max televote score of something like 50% (Kaarija last year), that's still 5 times higher than the theoretical max points of the Jury

Jesse had good radio song and I assume we'll hear it a lot, but it lack the instant grab you need in ESC. Sini is still waiting to leave any type of imprint on me. Mikael Gabriel was pretty boring. Hi Shane! 😊💖 Congrats Finland. But I was shocked. This is not my cup of tea, I'm sorry! But it's definitely a nostalgia trip😉. I liked Cyan Kicks, Sara and Jesse although some things were missing in their performances.
The singer in Windows95man sang out of tune. Melodically, this reminds me a lot of E-Type, although a much worse version. Excuse me! 🙏 If you are familiar with E-types songs, you just know. There are similarities in the beat and in the chorus loop. But the difference is that E-Type is a Eurodance musician, songwriter, record producer with his biggest era around the 90's. And some of his songs are "anthems" worldwide. He is not a phenomenal singer himself, but he had Nana Hedin as an accompanist for a long time which is 90% the reason for his succsess. I'm so sorry, but after growing up with his songs, I just can't with this. But thank you for reintroducing this golden era, it lives on strong today😊🌺.
    Some of E-Types hit songs:
"Set the world on fire"🔥/"Paradise"/"This is the way"/"Here I go again"/"Life" (all featuring Nana Hedin).
    - "Rain"/"The Predator"/"True believer" (The Swedish women's soccer team's "winning song" last year🙃)
    - "I just want to be with you" (ft N.H different style, Shane might like it)
Or a "short version": E. Type - Megamix M6 Hit Machine Best Of'96.
So thanks for allowing me to revisit these good old times💖. I have played E-Type non stop for 24 hours after this, addictive once you start 😄. Shane, you being a "chorus" type of person might like this (and Georgi?) because here it's the chorus that “does it". (Maybe a spread for Esc Whoop☺️) See ya!

No rules is fun, uplifting and has a nice message. I really liked Sini's song too but it's no match for No rules.

It's actually shocking that many people out there are trained to consume any kind of utter garbage...

I was fuming and i still am Shane🤷‍♂️ Disappointed with a lot of the performances staging wise and lack of energy especially with my second and third favs MG x N and Cyan Kicks…
To lose a special song in Paskana with unreal staging honestly has pissed me off that much i’d love to see Finland not qualify even tho it’s high unlikely sadly!
Scratch the Finland powerhouse talk and potential winner in the next few years for the foreseeable future when they choose to send the worst song in the selection purely because of stage entertainment and ‘fun’. I’d call it 00s Eurovision which personally i thought we’d thankfully moved on from🤐 I wasn’t much of a fan of Portion Boys from last year but that effort was miles clear of this utter💩

Not my cup of coffee. Cha Cha Cha was clever & fun, No Rules is silly. But: best of luck to our representatives in Malmö.

I dont get the hate for this entry. If it was performed better than the other songs, it deserved to go, which it was. And actually we've never had anything like this? But also, the Finnish landslided them...as Mikael Gabriel said 'VOX POPULI' - the system is in place so that the public have 75% of the vote - the Finnish want this to represent them and represent their music scene it does! For me it was this or Vox Populi. Sini didn't perform well and her song was pretty disgusting. And YES Windows95Man is gonna change his name for Eurovision! I just think people shouldn't hate on the Finnish people or Windows95Man and Henri (the singer) because of this result.

Basically the opposite of Italy where the televote counts less, here its 75% I think, which Im not so sure is a great idea given the way Finland has voted in the past? At least for my taste but then again their entries have been good.
Being a man who either rocks or clowns out on stage is your safest bet there.
I was a little disappointed with how the vocals were mixed for all the acts, often didnt combine well with backing vocals... but i think despite that I would still have given it to Sara because a "joke" act thats just 100% corny cliché doesnt excite me after Cha Cha Cha...

Finland has had a lot of bad experiences with jury voting in ESC in the past (as last year or the whole jury-only period before -97), so therefore it is perhaps not a big surprise that it was decided to tone down the role of the juries. This is the first time the split has had an impact on the winner though.

No rules was the only song that was stuck in my head after first listen so obvious winner in my mind.😁 Saara Siipola has very strange way of pronouncing the lyrics. I first tought that maybe she´s not native Finnish speaker but after hearing her speak, it´s just a weird way of singing.
