- The best archer civ? This video is another in my series of civilization overviews for AoE 2 HD and Forgotten Empires.
As always, I go over the civilization's bonuses in HD, FE changes, and then grade their tech tree based on my own impressions playing the civ, wrapping up with some recommendations and cautionary advice.

The mayan 20% resources bonus thingy reminds me of the infinite chocolate bar trick :)
well, now try to guess where did the chocolate came from mate? (well actually it came from the Mokayans and olmecas but the mayans used as currency and other stuff) same thing any ways
Infinite Chocolate bar?

How do I turn this on
You all prolly dont give a damn but does anybody know a trick to log back into an instagram account??
I was stupid lost my account password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me.
An updated overview on Mayans would be cool, since several changes happened since 2015, including:
- New techs, such as Arson and Arrowslits (the latter of which the Mayans lack since patch 4.8, which may reduce their Defences grade);
- A nerf to longer lasting resources bonus (now it's 15% instead of 20%) and a minor boost to Mayan farming rate;
- Another anti-archer civ to bring trouble to Mayans: the Vietnamese with their Rattan Archers and Imperial Skirmishers.
Ahh the Mayans. They were a stone age civilization that people trusted more than NASA.
+MarklenIngyer because esoteric bullshit about angels and doomsday is much more believable
Ironication
Beautiful strawman, sir, beautiful..
MarklenIngyer wait, are we on the same page? you talked about the mayan calendar that ppl believe about the world ending and stuff more than NASA, and I agreed with you - is that a strawman?
Ironication
You ambiguously brought up the book of revelations in a way that seemed to suggest you were somehow refuting me. I'm sorry, I must have misunderstood, A lot that is normally conveyed in tone is lost in text.
I'm quite used to CZcams commenters making really wild strawmen.
Ironication
I agree though, the dream of a random Bronze Age man and the calender of a stone age civilization are both dumb things believe about the end of the world. Though at least the book of revelations was written by a guy who knew what metalurgy was.
The bit on the Mayan civ bonus is actually wrong. It IS a 50% cost reduction, it's just rounded up for walls themselves. But for Gates, they cost 15 stone, not 18 (which you would get at a 40% reduction).
Well, walls are more common than gates.

"There is no chance, that up until this year, I've been been pronouncing it the 'Plummed Archer'".
You are literally the cutest thing~
Professor Plum archers.
You are a really good player aren't you? I saw your name in a game spirit casted...
half of the eagle warriors skin isnt even covered or protected only by cloth or feathers
how the hell do they have more pierce armor than a paladin wearing a leather harness+chain mail+plate mail??
+HECKproductions those dudes tore off the hearts of people off while still beating, they just ignore the arrows :D
+Gustavo Sanches AsubP = AV - F
AsubP -> pierce armor
AV -> attack value
F -> fucks given
+HECKproductions Abstractions. The skin of each unit is just an abstraction for a regiment fighting a certain way. I mean, Skirmishers throwing spears just as long as an arbalest can shoot? Siege engines without people attending them? A camel rider using thrown scimitars as its main means of attack?
RainbowDevourer
it is a 1996 strategy game, with zero intent of being realistic. The skirmisher have a considerably smaller range than the arbalest, and what you said about being an abstraction is found in CIV games
i guess they can dodge?

Holy cow, your channel has come so far. Watching this while I wait for your updated Mayan spotlight, reminiscing about obsidian arrows.
Wow, your videos never cease to amaze me. Going up faster than your opponent is a huge edge that I had never realized before seeing that chart. Thank you Spirit!

Obsidian Arrows
2013-2021
Most broken tech in the game.
I still love the powerpoint style transitions on the intro video so much!
The amount of work you do to produce these videos shows. Subbed on the spot, I am looking forward to the rest of your videos, thank you so much!
izack gallant Thanks!
Plummed archers are a thing
+Manipulative Mammoth now they are :)
+Grymm Rhoninn Glad I am not the only one that called them that.
I hate to be the one guy asking for something nobody else has asked for, but I'd love to see you do the Magyars. They have to be one of my favorite civilizations for their hella cheap cavalry and better cavalry archers.
I wonder if anybody else even played them until I saw your intro! Good to see.
I've played 'em a couple of times. They're pretty good actually. I love their Huszar thingies.
Jack Ericsson Yeah, their trash is fun as hell. Their halberdiers are a little weak but who cares when you can make not only Magyar Hussars for 80 food but also regular Hussars for 72, not to mention their skirmishers with extra LOS.
Sam Rodrigues
Yeah. I love swarming my enemies with junk.
Sam Rodrigues I like to spam spears with the slavs because they get that infantry bonus that hits all nearby units
Ethan Jones
Oh god....
It's been pointed out before but the Incas are not Meso-American. Meso means middle.
Just because a civilization doesn't train any cavalry doesn't mean it is weak. Eagle warriors are in fact the Conquistadors worst nightmare.
...how ironic.
If it wasn’t for the plague, our conquistadors would’ve had a very difficult time surviving tbh.
Hi Spirit of the Law. I discovered your channel about 24 hours ago and have probably watched more than half of your videos already. They are very entertaining and in many cases very helpful (i.e. How to counter eagle warriors). I've played this game for over a decade and I'm still learning new things. Thanks and keep up the good work!
ps. Please do a vid on Magyars sometime. They are my favorite scout rushing civ.
Somebody actually made the Plummed Archer mod, and it's great.
That means Spirit has no longer a cat with autogram available... shame
Thanks for reviewing my favorite civ! Love the videos!
Love your vids! Been watching them for the last couple of days and I'm learning so much about the game :)
always come back to your overview videos. so good, thanks dude
So did you send your Cat to the guy who made the Plum Archer Mod?
yo clearly don't need to know this but still: in the future, Incas are not mesoamericans (mostly modern Mexico), but Andean (mostly moderns Peru and Bolivia). Reason I point this is because they are thousands of miles apart, from a diferent region of the continent, or from the average English speaker point of view, even an entirely different continent.
Yeah, I don't think the Aztecs and the Inca had a lot of contact with each other either given the density of the jungle at Darian.
@@MrMarinus18 they had ships though but I reckon they were more interested in domestic issues
I think I read they know each other but didn't have to do a lot with each other, their centers were pretty far away one of the other.
I'd like to mention that the Mayans lack of Cavalry Archer is offset by the fact that Plumed Archers are supposed to be the Mayan's replacement (similar to how Eagle Warriors replace Scout Cavalry). An elite Plumed Archer isn't as fast as a Heavy Cavalry Archer but near enough (for comparison, Halberdier has 1 speed, EPA has 1.2 speed, EEW has 1.3 speed, HCA had 1.4 speed). The elite plumed archer has only slightly lower stats than the heavy cavalry archer but at a significantly lower cost. Quite a bonus imo.
Hey! Really nice and useful review, you never dissapoint when opening one of your vids ( and almost watched all haha) That idea you said about the end, to make a vídeo about resources for constant production of units (in the practical and experimental way you always do) sounds amazing, as it will help every player to get better and more efficient when doing economy in a really simple way. Keep it up bro!
I really love all your videos and the intense analytical work you do in them. Have you considered doing a compare/contrast of the three civs' Eagle warriors and their different bonuses?
Dude I've been waiting for this review forever! I didn't notice the cheaper arbolists. That's going to change my game forever!
The Mayan civ bonus is actually a 50% cost reduction. You only looked at the stone walls, but if you look at Gates, they cost 15 stone (normally 30) and palisades cost 1 wood (normally 2), so it just rounds up for the stone walls.
just rediscovered the game like 1month ago , and man yr videos are very nice , i watched like 40 vids in a row , keep up the good work fam
Second time I'm watching this playlist. Everytime I don't want to play AoE2 anymore and play an other game for some month I restart playing AoE2 by watching this playlist, thanks for that Spirit of the Law!

Hey, Spirit. I know this is an old video, but wouldn't the 20% longer lasting resources with the wood example at 4:15 mean each tree would effectively yield 125 wood instead of the 120 that you claimed in the video? Given that you stated only 8 gold is removed from the gold tile for every 10 gold collected, a tree after having collected 100 wood from it would effectively still have 20 wood left, which would yield another 25 wood when gathered, totalling 125 wood per tree. That means the resources effectively yield 25% extra, right?
You're right that it doesn't add up if villagers take 10 resources and it drops by 8. I think resources keep track of decimals, though, and it's actually 8.333 left. I checked it out again and after the first trip taking 8 the next time they appear to take 9 and then back to 8 again. Good catch that something wasn't adding up.
If that was true they'd take 6 after taking the additional twenty they get, and then .2 from that additional 1, and etc.
9:51 you can even see the HD glitch there where eagle scout replaces eagle warrior. This is true in game too, you couldn't upgrade them until imperial
I love you videos, especially these civ overview videos :D
Its always fun to watch those blue paladins get wrecked by the onager's in the intro. If I ever submit an intro, it will be pure onager's :)
Doom Squared Knights actually. And it's mostly cavalry archers
I've never lost the desire to wall up my settlements: a town just lacks that medieval feel without it. I start walling up in the feudal age, though the fortifications are rarely completed till the mid-castle age (when I erect the requisite castle and farm defenses). It's also why I refuse to play as the Goths.
Having said that I put a lot of effort into making my towns impervious to assaults. fortification in AoE II is a specialty of mine in Multiplayer. I was always the guy who would be trusted to make defensive positions which can make an enemy's life a living hell.
for example: I was able to wipe out an entire army of Paladins (Spanish) using just palisades, 20 longbowmen, 10 infantry, 8 cavaliers, and 2 onagers. I lost 12 men; the enemy near 95. The guy was so pissed off his wall of profanity apparently jammed the LAN line...we still joke about it though.
It was apparent though that he lost the war there and then, as that was apparently his only army, and I still had a full army which hadn't yet been committed (and he was short of funds: all had been spent wiping out my team-mate, who gave me all his remaining resources before surrendering, so that I could continue the war).
Sorry, you talk about the Mayan wall bonus just sent me down memory lane XD
Albukhshi an old comment but I liked your story. I like walling shit up. still dont know how to effectively use the palisades though
Well, I don't wall up with Palisades in the conventional way (because they're a POS for that role). Palisades are almost entirely used for field-work by me (as in my account). And you can tell, I build them to be used with siege-weapons and archers: it's why the Britons are my favorite civ in this game (the specific uses I have for palisades in fact originate with my attempts to protect my longbowmen from, of all things, a combined Gothic-Viking Zerg-rush).
In hindsight I could have improved on the defenses in that battle I mentioned by the use of scorpions rather than onagers: less likely to ruin my own works XD
I'm still waiting for the longbow man and plumed archer comparison video.
Somehow I guessed the wall correctly.
aListers same
We will build this wall and the Mayans will use thier 50% cheaper bonus to pay for it.
You should definitely do that constant production of units video you were talking about at the end. and maybe include how the economic upgrades affect the number of villagers necessary.
I have a theory... Spirit actually records the videos drunk and then just speeds them up... You want evidence? Just play the video at 0.5 speed... He's either drunk or high... still haven't nailed that one yet...
Late. But everyone sounds drunk or high when you play their voice at half speed.
That's the case with every single person. They will sound tipsy at 75 speed, and totally hammered at .25 speed.
Thats funny
Really enjoyed this, super helpful.
Oh, and if you could do a review on the monastery, that would be great :) also how long it takes to convert. I don't actually know the timing. Thanks!
the incas have notning to do with Aztecs Mayans Olmec or Toltec
What do you mean?
+Juan Pablo Warthon Wu That Incas are South American, not Meso American.
Some say that the purpechas of Mexico are descendants of Incas, and there is very interesting evidences on that theory
Incas? Not some previous andean civ?
Olmecs were black .
Nice video, cool to see I civ I usually don't play... Going to try then out
Arbs with obsidian arrows acting like fleshy trebs is really funny
Binge-watching your content. Can't stop. Agh
Yay somebody remembers Doc Halladay. Brings me back to my first AoE 2 days as well.
You too? Wow, I'm not alone.
greatly inproved my mp game man thank you
some really good points displayed abt Mayans with depths
Would really appreciate Mongols next !
kinda wierd that you gave the byzantines a c+ in siege even though it's the same tech tree plus the bombard canon
Kinda weird also that britons are a A- as archery and Saracens who are one of the best in Navy have B+ and mayans A-
To be serious, Mayans here are definitly overrated in rates.
They are very strong it s true of course, but we can t say they are elitè in navy, plus siege sucks, that economic bonus and discount wood doesnt make them automatically have better rate than bizantines that saves resources as well other ways.
Britons deserve at least an A for archers since that extra range is far more important than Thumb Ring in most real game situations, kicks in automatically upon reaching Castle and Imperial Age respectively, plus also stacks with the Yeomen technology; their economy bonuses are deceptively good for an archer rush or building up for the inevitable massed archer push with supporting Halberdiers, cavalry and siege; and for every late gamer, fully upgraded Elite Longbowmen outrange Castles and Onagers most importantly. Sure Mayans have the edge overall at purely archery and Vietnamese are good at countering them at range (and also Byzantines with their cheap Skirms perhaps) but Britons have the advantage over all other civs in terms of archers really. The lack of Hand Cannons hurts a little but is not sorely missed. Oh, I forgot to mention their Archery Ranges (and the team's) work 20% faster.
I found it odd that they had an A- for archers, and Magyars with literally no bonus other than +2 LOS for foot archers and Recurve Bow that only helps Cav Archers, and missing Hand Cannons again, had an A in the updated All Civ Grades.
Maybe the resource bonus and mayans archer line are cheaper? More unit = better i think
And maybe (at least up until recently) the Obsidian Arrows tech
There's just something so great about nuking the enemy into dust with 180 fully upgraded arbalests. Especially against cavalry.
Spirit Of The Law Really educational video man! I liked it. I have a request. Can you do a video on what "resistance to monks" bonus for teutons and Scout cavalry and eagle warriors actually means. As well an insight into the "Faith" research would be helpful too. Please.
BisAlmighty Check out this link for some extensive research done into monks. aok.heavengames.com/university/strategy/statistics/how-monks-really-work/
Nice overview :) very complete liked a lot.
That last siege battle on that ice bridge got me thinking that it'd be an interesting dynamic if ice sheets took environment damage and hitting tiles of ice enough would cause them to break through. Or, if you have too many heavy units (siege or cavalry) in too concentrated an area they could fall through the ice and be lost to the water below. You could also destroy the ice enemy units are on and send a whole regiment of troops out of commission by sending them for a swim or cutting off choke points
Sudden Strike 4 RTS has this effect.
Thanks...really good. Greetings from Colombia.
I started typing a comment when I heard you say "plum'd archer" but then I heard the just kidding. I totally took the bait.
On a sidenote, you should definitely do a civ overview on the Mongols, they're a popular civ and I've always wanted to know how their cav archer battles w/the huns go down. Is the 20% faster firing or 25-30% cheeper in castle/imperial a better upgrade?
Excellent civ overview, thanks for keeping up the video quality even though you're Mr. Popular now.
Edit: I believe the term for "how many villagers it takes on each resource for constant production from one military building" is Modular Gameplay.
WOW I had no idea how broken the Mayan's eco was. Insane
I'm in love with the Chris Archer reference
Mayans should trade their Archers to get Meadowses and Glasnows
Pluto is back to being a planet, Spirit of the Law
Thanks for these great videos :) I have just got my GF into AOE2 and most your videos explain everything so much better than i could to her, i am even learning things!!
spirit of the law have always the best analyse
mayans should totally mine all the gold and stone in team games :P
SirLaurenceNZ not a bad plan in the late game, actually haha
now that would be op if it was added onto trade bonus with the Spanish lol
Spirit Of The Law whoo 3rd maths suggestion taken hype lol
Actually, they do sound like the top tier slinging civilization. Provided the player is pocket, they could non-stop boom up their economy making nothing but vils and mining all the resources, and then tributing all to a flank player with a good offensive civ.
Nice vid mate. I want to see your thoughts on the Magyars!
Had a game last night against the AI on hard, as Incas. Against Aztecs, Mayans and Spanish. Wow, what an epic game! Spanish will unbelievably tough to defeat after my Aztec allies crumbled to them. Was entertaining!
Given that plumed archers, 2h swordsmen, and eagle warriors are all beaten easily by huskarls, which the Goths can crank out in even greater numbers, does this mean the Goths basically hard counter Mayans? As far as I can tell the Mayans have no answer to huskarls at all.
+theycalllmebacon was doing some testing and the only units that do something against them are EEWs swordsmen halbediers and EPAs. gotta win the game before they get to mass husks
Mayans are really good early game vs goths, but if the goth player survives to get a castle up, Mayans are dead
So the grey/silver chestplate menas armourpenetration? I alwaays thoght it was armour..
How do you see the armor pentrate if not so?
So mayans are the best civ? Spirit barely mentioned anything bad about them.
+PanikGrafik it's fair to say lots of people consider them (at least one of) the best before the expansions. They've been nerfed a tiny bit now
+PanikGrafik I think that farm rate can be a serious problem long term.
+PanikGrafik Mayans are probably 1st ahead of aztecs and huns
The huns can scout/archer in feudal vs Spear/archer from mayans, which forces the mayans to go castle. In castle in huns vs mayans the hun has Cav archers vs Crossbows, The cav archs are better vs magonels than the crossbow, but if the mayan can get 3 TC's and a castle the mayan usually wins. The huns Hussara+Heavy calvary archer combo just can't beat Plumed archers+Halbs
+PanikGrafik I dunno! No Cavalry at all seems to a pretty bad negative.
Bob Smith If it was "everything"there wouldn't be a civ without it in a balanced game.
Hi, i love your videos, i found that plumed archers have a little attack bonus against teutonic knights, at least on conquerors. If you are interested
Can you do a review of the Goths? They are one of my favorite civs.
Watching through this again... just have to check, when you are talking about gathering gold did you say "when you mine it" or "when you mayan it"
does the goth team bonus and Aztec recruit speed bonus stack or do you just get one?
RIP Roy Halladay
We need aztec overview! :(
can you do an over view of saracense
i love playing as them asd i would love to know some more things about them
Byzantine + team with Mayan = Trump's favorite
We will build this wall and the Mayans will use thier 50% cheaper bonus to pay for it.
@@mrshootinputin7251 The Mayans actually lived in an area that is part of modern-day Mexico. How fitting.
@@Tierchenmeister how about the US hire Mexican workers to build the wall at a cheaper cost and see the savings as Mexico paying for the wall (at least partially)? XD
Just one question, the archer in castle is the same of villagers???
One of my favorite nations of AoE 2
I wish Spirit of the Law would make a video about Obsidian Arrows
Hi Spirit, could you please make a Spaniards overview video? I recently subscribed to tour channel and everything I have to say is... I just love it hahaha specially when you upload videos in which you use maths to explain which unit/strategy is worthy :)
I bet you can guess where I am from by my youtube name so I just want to encourage you to keep working on this channel as its pretty good.
Keep this good ;)
Chinese next to wrap up the archer civs? :) Personally I put the Chu Ko Nu's over other archers due to its special mechanics, but I'd like to hear your opinion.
I haven't played AoE for years and years, so I think I only watch these video's for this dude's voice.
same here lol
Hey Spirit, what map were you playing at 11:30 ?
What is the song in your intro? It sounds pretty badass and it's been bugging me everytime I watch your videos.
Awesome mate...Goths next?
Sounds like they have a nice edge on Scandinavia with all the hunting. Loom first and more huntable food while staving off the farm penalty (16:05).
Also 12:13 I would give B+ for those famed secret blast forge techniques and native halbs!
RIP Doc Halladay
Hey, Incas aren't Mesoamerican. Incas are Andean.
Will you do aztecs? :) Love your vids! :)
One thing I don't understand is why you give the Mayans a B+ for siege, but only a B for the Spanish who have the same siege tree plus the bombard cannon. Do you also factor eco bonuses into your grading?
subbed, great videos!!!
also the rocks look smaller on the mayan walls, maybe they can use "little" stone to make great walls
I have loved this whole series. My win rate with all civs has improved and im a much better team player. Can you do a remake with the castle age techs??
yo @SpiritoftheLaw when will you do the new 4 civs[especially Malay]?
Great video! I'd like to see that mayan 20% resourse bonus further explained
Osiris36 any specific questions about it, or you'd just like it explained a bit better?
I didn't get the farms part... it's less efficient? why?
Osiris36 yea,h,fair enough. I'm starting to doubt the common explanation, as well, since my (admittedly brief) test was pretty far from the generally accepted percentage decrease in efficiency. It's probably worth a 3-4 minute video to follow up and clarify. Thanks for bringing this up!
Will u do Aztecs?
Jon Ross he already did
hey buddy, check the numbers to the right of the username, really useful.
It would be cool if u did a civ overview of the Koreans and great vid
came back to this video just after watching a mayan vs brit match
nice video. but i wanna ask if the farm problem has been solved in aoe2de now.
