    Leave it to the government to make things less efficient. Small diesels should be a lot more common in the US.

    I just stumbled across this channel and my family doesn’t even own a diesel vehicle. But you are one hundred percent correct on changing oil every 4-5k miles. The 10k mile OCI is complete BS and implemented to fool people into under-servicing their engines so that problems arise and they’ll eventually buy another car. I’ll always change my oil every 4K miles and provide other maintenance as my dad had instructed me. Every car he’s owned before never had any issues because of being meticulous with maintenance.

      Exactly !
      They amended the issue initially with a higher viscosity oil (5w40). Along with a TSB altering the shift pattern & increasing max permissable rpm by like 400rpm off memory.
      Sport mode pre TCM might be defined at 3500rpm, now it might be 3900rpm

    Very good video.. Such a shame I have always changed the oil in my gasoline vehicles every 3 to 4 Thousand miles.. How did I ever fall into changing the oil in my Eco diesel every 10,000 miles? I started changing it about every 5 to 6000 miles when it hit 70000 miles.. It has a 120000 on it now... And now I am changing it every 4000 miles.. 1500 Eco diesel ram Laramie 4x4 This thing has all the Bells and whistles with the towing package 2015... Bought this truck brand new Really love the truck I would hate to see the engine blow.. I would probably replace the engine? These trucks are crazy expensive right now.. But I'm sure an engine change is crazy expensive also..

    Spot on. I have an old 2006 Jeep GC with the Merc OM642 motor, about 280k km on it. Previous owner did everything wrong, used car oil instead of low soot diesel etc, caused inlet manifold valves to stick. Whole motor out repair. I stopped trusting Jeep dealerships because they were useless, and have been servicing it myself ever since with top quality oil which has quietened the motor significantly so I have no idea what oil the dealership was putting in. I change oil every 10,000 km but might drop this a little to something like 8000km. The engine oil filter is right on top of the motor, a very easy change compared to many diesels.

    I had a 1984 F250 with the 6.9 IDI and had over 600,000 miles on it. It was well maintained, but eventually died. I swear, I wish they could remake those kinds of trucks again. No bells and whistles, just a 4x4 diesel with power sterling, power brakes, heat, and maybe a backup camera. Nothing fancy, just a solid truck. I agree, preventative maintenance is everything, though.

    V6 diesel is a poor platform. Rod and main journals are too narrow so they increase diameter to increase surface, but increasing the diameter increases surface speed at rpm. This is what is wearing them out. Big boys use inline 6 for a reason.

    Hi Tony. I’m looking into purchasing a ‘14-‘16 EcoDiesel Grand Cherokee. I know there’s a lot of regular maintenance that is needed, and I have researched all of the consistent maintenance that I’d have to do on a regular basis. I don’t have a problem performing them myself, but what’s the best way to avoid buying one that hasn’t been taken care of (babied) by the previous owner(s)? I plan on asking the dealership for the CARFAX, but other than that, do you have any recommendations or things to look out for before, during, or after a test drive? Thanks!

    • @dieseltalkwithtonysalas8725
      @dieseltalkwithtonysalas8725  Před 2 lety +5

      I would check blowby first, start the engine, remove oil fill cap, check for excessive pressure. Two, I would check oil condition. Three, it would be great if you could buy a cheap scan reader at a nearest auto parts store and check for codes. Check for leaks. Inspect axles boots for tear. Drive it slow and hard.
      But! You know of a hood diesel light duty shop in your area that you can pay to inspect for you? We offer that service. What town you in? Maybe I know of a shop. Email

      It’s not the oil … it’s the environment the oil lives in if that helps to understand. Just reduce that oil change interval. 4-5 k miles.
      But do be mean to it rather frequently since those emission systems need heat to reduce emissions.

    so, what actually destroyed the engine? bad fuel [under 40 cetane] or running old oil?
    both?
    ive a 2.8 colorado and have become paranoid about taking care of the engine. i add optilube
    extreme lubricant, cetane booster,diesel clean, and dpf treatment. i know that it may be overkill but better safe than sorry i guess. im also going to add a catch can and oil bypass filter soon. its a fun truck.

      @dieseltalkwithtonysalas8725  Před 3 lety +3

      In this case we saw gelling of the engine oil starving one of the mains. We had the engine oil tested and it was overloaded lubrication package was gone. We feel the engine oil was never changed based on the lab report info. But we are not sure. However this means engine oil needs to be changed under what is recommended. Don't go overboard on the additives since that is detrimental to the aftertreatment with additional phosphorous and sulfur compounds. Stick to the name brands of fuel stations, they tend to be more reliable.
      I wouldn't recommend any engine oil additive if you are changing oil every 4-5K miles. As for fuel additives, we use Alliant Power and Stanadyne.

    Hey Tony. Great videos. I have a question.
    So I have a 2015 Jeep GC with the Eco Diesel. It has 137,000 miles. Engine blew not long after I purchased it. I bought a New Crate engine from a local dealer and installed it myself. (Dealer wanted $5k to install it). I work on heavy equipment and have I decided to do it. It took me just about 4 days to remove and install the new engine. Question I have it I have 7-8 codes. Do I have to re-flash the ECM? My scanner shows none of the exhaust sensors recognized and TCM lost communication also loss of communication with body control module. Im going to call the dealership tomorrow where I bought the engine and see what they say.

    Thanks for the heads up. But would you not agree that every single car needs regular maintenance? I am in the market for a diesel grand Cherokee at the moment. I live in Australia, and then resell value is much less, so it’s a good opportunity to get a nice secondhand car for a cheaper price. Especially when compared to Toyota. I guess the resale value is much lower because of the reputation of being not reliable, but if I keep up with the maintenance, do you think that this really is just as reliable as the next car? Thank you I would really appreciate any insight or advice.

    Hey Tony just grabbed a brand new Wrangler with the Gen3 ecodiesel, I can do basic mechanic maintenance but thats about it. So would you say to keep up with the oil, fuel filter, and air filter changes on a more frequent schedule? For example I know its pricey but if I were to take what the manual states as recommended and cut that in half for my scheduled changes, I could prolong the engine? For example 10k oil change is executed at every 5k? Similarly fuel filter changes state every 2nd oil change, if I just do the fuel filter every oil change as well could help keep the motor running longer for the life of the vehicle? I appreciate your feedback, I love the ecodiesel wrangler and don't want to stress about it if I can help it with a more frequent maintenance schedule. Thanks again!

    • @deeremeyer1749
      @deeremeyer1749 Před 6 měsíci

      ROFLMAO. "Emissilons crap" is not simply added on to existing "dirty" engines. 99% of failures allegedly "due" to "emissions crap" are the result of deleting same and/or "tuning" the powertrain - not JUST the engine - and/or human error in selecting and SERVICING the vehicle. Oil changes, tuneups - yes "high tech" engines still require tune-ups and everything else on the periodic SERVICE schedule.
      Whenever somebody "wrenches" on a machine it is NOT "maintenance:. It is SERVICE.
      Washing, waxing, tire inflation, fluid CHECKS etc are MAINENANCE. Service is whenever fluids, filters, wear parts and other "disposables" are removed and replaced.
      And REPAIR is what is required to properly "fix" an obvious "issue" causing the vehicle to improperly or fail entirely to "run and drive".
      Do 100% of everything "by the book" i.e. the "owners manual" as far as maintenance and service of a brand-new vehicle from Day 1 INCLUDING taking it to an authorized dealer - and factory-trained and authorized 'mechanics" - AND operate the vehicle 100% "by the book" and you will find the more "high tech" the vehicle the more "reliable" and more importantly DURABLE it is.
      Fail to do things and you are abusing and/or neglecting the vehicle and you deserve whatever "premature failures" YOU cause the vehicle to "experience".

What are your best suggestions for maintenance to prevent this from happening again? e.x best type of engine oil. , any suggested oil additives or not?

    the manufacturer is at fault not the owner..
    they should be investigating the issues and make the appropriate changes!!!

    Hi Tony.
    You scared me wit the maintenance every 5k miles. I work on a lot of Mercedes Sprinters and some of them require oil change every 15 or 20k miles which is crazy to me. Some of my costumers drive 15k on one oil change and the engines last 500k to 1 million miles in the same time they don't drive local.
    Speaking about oil type on 2021 Jeep diesel engine. On the oil cap it says 5W-40. Newer Mercedes diesel engine uses 5w-30 because 5w40 can't meet the specifications so I'm little bit confused.
    PS. Great video. I almost didn't recognize you 😉. In the same time last time I saw you in 2011 in Vegas :)

    My 21 Jeep Wrangler diesel died yesterday. Only 17k miles and had the oil changed much earlier then recommended. Glad it didn’t leave me stranded on a trail. In this weather who know what could have happened. 😅

      But if you are like me trail ride but I have a gasoline Jeep, it’s always a good idea to get a Satellite Garmin Reach mini 2 or something similar. For those emergencies
      It’s hard to say what is wrong with your low mileage Jeep but a proper diag will help. I take it you have it for warranty work

    I change my oil every 12k km, not miles. Now it has over 400k. Does not burn oil or leak. 5w40 rotella. Fram gold filter all the time. Never change an air filter for 5 years now. Change the fuel filter when I feel like it. Fully tuned deleted. Race occasionally. Tow a 19ft bow rider to cottage, roughly 2 hrs drive. Only replace water pump and radiator.
    Take it to Tony and you will get a new vehicle every time. New parts never a problem. Common sense

      Here we are recommending every 3-4K miles. I know it seems short but with aftertreatment emission control you need it.
      If the vehicle is driven high speed miles they you can stretch it to 5k miles.

    thanks Mr. Tony, I found your video very interesting. I am writing to you from Italy and unfortunately more than someone here has the engine problem. it is fair to think that this VM engine is a good engine but unfortunately does not like pollution devices over the last few years. I personally change the engine oil every 10000km (6/7000 miles, however, I drive very often on fast roads), using a flush engine before servicing and using a good oil. I hope it will be enough to have no problem. any other suggestions for us? thank you
