    I was forced to “upgrade” to version 2 due to a recall. I agree with you 100%. Version 2 sucks! I would rather have the Dreamstation 1 or ResMed Airsense 10 than this Dreamstation 2. And I will mention, That the Dreamstation 2 is noisy. You can hear every breath that you inhale through the filter holes. No pre-heat on the version 2 either. Refilling the tank is cumbersome and messy. I liked the graph on the old one also. It seems that the Covid excuses have given a lot of manufacturers an chance to go cheap and charge twice as much!

      I received a recall notice for my DS1 as well. I find the Max marking on the DS2 tank could use some improvement. The Max marking is practically invisible except on the side facing the rest of the machine. This means I have to try and watch the water level on the side where I can easily see the Max level while also keeping an eye on the water I'm pouring in to make sure I get it in the container. I find the slide design for the water holder could also use improvement. Sure the DS1 required room behind to open and access the water reservoir, but the DS2 requires even more room to slide off the water reservoir; why not just sturdy clips (unlike many other devices where the clips are flimsy and guaranteed to break).

    • @missustoad1
      @missustoad1 Pƙed rokem +3

      I wish he would show a vision impaired old lady like myself trying to remove and refill the water chamber without dropping the distilled water jug, spilling water out the bottom, plastic side hole, or,
      simply bouncing off the top plus popping back on the top. They need to include a mop to clean my floor and some towels for sheets and desk. Grr.

    • @roniM2023
      @roniM2023 Pƙed rokem +1

      Yep, I just got my recall Dreamstation 2 and am going nuts hearing myself breathe through the filter hole- they definitely cut corners with this model to save with the recall. I suspect this version was actually meant to be a travel CPAP. Haven;t returned my Dreamastation 1 yet, am tempted to take it apart and see if I can rip out the carcinogenic foam....what do you all think?

  • @CPAPReviews
    @CPAPReviews  Pƙed 3 lety +14

    For those with a DS1 (and older philips cpaps) - Okay guys so here's the only fact that matters here! Information straight form the recall page on the Canadian Health Govt Website - Issue number 2 is the worse!
    "Philips has become aware of two (2) issues that may pose a risk for patients or users of Philips Respironics branded Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure (BIPAP), and Mechanical Ventilators:
    1. Philips has determined from user reports and testing that the Polyester-Based Polyurethane (PE-PUR) sound abatement foam used in Philips continuous and non-continuous ventilators may degrade under certain circumstances, and the degraded particles could potentially enter the air pathway of the device. This issue affects Philips Respironics branded CPAP’s, Bi-Levels, and Mechanical Ventilators.
    2. The results of testing performed by Philips indicate that the PE-PUR sound abatement foam used in these devices may emit certain chemicals. Our investigation to date indicates that this emission occurs during initial operation and may possibly continue throughout the device's useful life.
    These issues impact all device product platforms manufactured with Polyester Polyurethane (PE-PUR) sound abatement foam"
    So let me break this down so it's easier to understand. Basically Philips have gone and grabbed a brand new DS1 off the shelf, turned it on and tested the air coming out of it. They have determined from this that machine is 'emitting certain chemicals' and that this happens from day 1 and may continue for the life of the machine! Now from the U.S recall page they have stated these are 'carcinogenic' chemicals.
    So from day one, your machine is pumping you full of carcinogenic chemicals and this could continue night after night for the life of the machine. This is the reason for the recall! They are using the ozone / foam break down as a smoke screen to hide the real reason which that it doesn't matter how you clean your device or what the weather is...From day 1...It's bad for you! Stay tuned and good luck

    Thanks for a great review. I have been using my new DS 2 for about 5 days now and I really dislike the humidifier tank. I fill it just before bedtime and my wife is usually fast asleep already. The dark tank in a dark room using a small flashlight make it very difficult to see the marks on the tank. The clear tank on the DS 1 was simple. About the only change in mine that I like is the 12mm hose, no more tangling up while sleeping. Keep up with the great info.

    What a great informative review Nick! I am an avid fan of the dream station - I use a dreamstation 1 fixed pressure unit, it’s almost 5 years old and it’s still running as well as the day I bought it. It’s reliable, comfortable to use, easy to use and configure. The humidity control works brilliantly and is very customisable for how much humidity you find comfortable. When I saw your video thumbnail I was so excited at the prospect of a brand new machine, full of new useful features, better aesthetics (the only real weakness of my dream station 1 is how it looks). Wow, what a disappointment. I am so unimpressed by the new model- there are major negatives present which you’ve highlighted well for us all- namely the tiny touch screen which is only viewable and usable from the top of the unit! For a bedside unit that is just ridiculous! And how fiddly it is now to access the humidifier tank, what a joke!
    I can that I will be steering very well clear of this model. In fact if my current dreamstation 1 died tomorrow I’d simply look to purchase the same one and ignore this second model.
    And yep- for camping and travelling I bought from you a z2 auto with battery pack and I LOVE it! Therefore my dreamstation remains permanently on my bedside table and for that I want the ease of use and high performance and features they come with a big bedside unit.
    Your review covered all areas of concern for me and I think you did a great job of covering all angles especially the missed potential for increased and more useful data logging and AI adaptive smarts that they’ve simply missed the boat on.
    Philips should be embarrassed about what they’ve put out for sale to the market here- it is, quite frankly, a downgrade to live from the 1 series to this 2 series model.
    Cheers

    Just watched this today, it was done prior to the recall. I agree, Nick, with all suggestions for improvements, especially for making the machine more user friendly for
    the visually impaired and dexterity impaired. The first priority for all manufacturers of health related equipment such as cpap and bipap and ventilators, should be providing a product that is harmless, pure and free or all toxic components, so that the user breathes in the purest air possible. That means considering the type of plastics and foams and glues used. I just got my dream station 2 replacement last week and the moment I opened it, it stunk from plastic or glue. I won't be using it. Did they not learn from the dream station 1 toxic foam issue? Priority
    needs to be health not money making.

      "Priority needs to be health not money making." In the U.S. this has become a huge problem. It used to be we were "patients". Now... we're "customers". I remember when our clinic/hospital changed their phones message so when you call they refer to us as "customers". I don't want to be a customer of a clinic/hospital or other healthcare establishment. I want to be a patient. They care for patients... they market to customers, they charge customers through the roof, they are only concerned with keeping the books in the black... profit ĂŒber alles! Same with when you got to see a doctor and the nurse starts out the visit taking your vitals, etc. They spend most of their time on the computer and not even looking at the patient. Same with a lot of doctors. My doctor, thank God talks to "me" and looks at "me" and we communicate... not him sitting on a computer and talking to me without looking at me. He takes the time and that's the right way. But sadly, the overall system, just as with politics, etc., is all broken.

I haven't checked yet (because i couldn't figure out how to take it apart) but i have a feeling they've probably used the same turbine / motor from the DS1 also. It's almost embarrassing that they call it a colour touch screen. Mine didn't even come with a 12mm heated tube and it wasn't even an option. Philips have some really really bad business practices. They release the new machines only to a very few select companies so they can get all the 'sales' from the hype and then gradually release it to smaller companies. Because of this you only get 'reviews' from companies that are their best customers. I also find it pretty hard to swallow that they are now releasing information about a potential fault with the DS1 which i have known about for years. Anyway, poor form as far as i'm concerned. I grew to love the lightweight 12mm hose on the Dreamstation Go, and actually started to use my Go over my regular Dreamstation because of it, so I'm happy to see the Dreamstation 2 using a 12mm hose, and I have good results with this setup, my AHI is generally under 2. Regarding the top screen, I figured out a long time ago that it's quieter not having your CPAP at head level, so I keep mine on the floor, and I can just roll over, and look down at the top to see the touchscreen. Now, regarding the size, if you're someone who likes to travel by motorcycle, all riders requiring CPAP therapy look for a compact CPAP to save space in their luggage. And why there are travel CPAP's, only a couple have humidifiers, the Go being one of them, but it has also been recalled, and I like masks where the hose connects at the top of the head, which can't be used with HME. So, for me personally, this is a good travel and home CPAP machine. My only real gripe, no auto off, not that I've found anyway. I have 2 cats, and if one of them steps on the button while I'm at work, the thing will run all day long.

    The water chamber is probably the most annoying thing about the DS2. The lid is extremely flimsy, I’ve almost broken the clips twice now. However I do like the fact I can replace that entire chamber when it’s time. I’m looking forward to trying that new 12mm heated tube when it’s available.

I didn't bother mentioning the tube as why would it not be available when the machines released? Makes no sense. I'm confused

    I disagree with some parts of your review. Size does matter and in this case the small form factor is really important. Also the heated tube is super light -- it's the lighted heated tube I have come across. I also think patients will like the look of it. I never understood why folks complained about the size and look of the Dreamstation 1 but they did -- at least in our clinics. It didn't seem to matter that they could take the compressor on trips and leave the humidifier at home. Serious travelers are opting for travel CPAP. Agreed, for older people touch screen may be hard for them to manipulate.

    Hi Nick, hello from Mexico. I just bought a used dreamstation from a dealer of this type of equipment. Mexico being a sort of junk box for the USA and Canada. On your CZcams channel I knew how to use it by watching the three episodes on the dreamstation, even before receiving it. I used it three nights, it is a great CPAP, before knowing thanks to you again, of the danger of using it, a danger apparently well hidden by Philips for quite a long time. Finally a few minutes ago, arriving from work, on your channel I just saw the solution to my problem. Being in Mexico and without the invoice of this US device, I do not think I am entitled to the guarantee of the Philips company. Thank you very much Nick for all your advice, for sharing your experience with all of us, for always giving your opinion frankly. Congratulations to your CZcams channel. Your friend, Philippe Mellé.

    The water tray cannot be understated: it’s truly a ghastly design flaw. All the issues well mentioned are true, but users need to know the slide on and off is NOT easy. It’s dicey, and requires lining pieces up just right. Hard for the non nimble, the hard of seeing - and for the space challenged! The tray slides BACKWARDS to lift off and out, requiring much more total free table space than even the old system took up. It’s a watery affair, where spilling is possible. Also note that unless you have a delicate touch, it’s a two handed affair - essentially pulling the machine apart with both hands - every night! I go to bed late: imagine machine disassembly at 3:00 AM when your wife is asleep, and you are tired
 Fill the machine earlier in the night if possible, just after dinner - as you won’t want to do it at bedtime!!

    My wife has used both the Dreamstation 1 and Dreamstation 2. She has had so many problems with them. All of a sudden, they'll stop putting out sufficient pressure. I just sent her Dreamstation 2 back for repair in December -- she had been using it for 5 months, and also had that malfunction. They sent her a new one, and that started putting our insufficient pressure after a week of usage. The pressure is set at 12. Last night I hooked up a manometer to the device, and the pressure was varying between 4 and 10 as she breathed. I give up. I can contact Phillips, but getting tired of sending them back and them sending a new one (it's still under warranty).

    I received my DreamStation 2 through the recall and used it for the first time last night. I hate the humidifier and mine didn't heat up. We had s burst of humidity so I don't know if the air is moist enough or not. The only thing that impressed me is it told my sleep events per hour without searching for it. I woke up with a plugged up nose the same thing my old DreamStation 1 did. The fan motor sounds like it's 10 years and the bearings are going out of it. It has that new CPAP smell.

      @@CPAPReviews Based on other videos and programs I have watched I debated on breaking the seals on the box. In the USA I think you have to be licensed to sell and resell CPAP machines. If I knew the humidifier was working correctly I would be more happy. The humidity in Southern Illinois is almost 100% this weekend. So the machine may be adjusting to prevent rainout in the hose. It's around 68°F(20°C) outside too warm to run the heat and too cool to dehumidify with the A/C. It's suppose to be safe and effective. So I got what I asked for! LOL!

Any breath noises users hear is their mask. all use info is in the app. i also have a resmed that is a year old. the resmed runs out of water faster than any I've had. most insurance cover the cost of cpap machines and equipment. one thing that contributes to running out of water is being awake with it on for too long. people breathe deeper and more often than when sleeping. if you need a humidifier attachment at home. you'll need one camping.

    I have been unhappy with my DS1 for every day of the 3+ years that I have used it. Pulmonary function works as it should. My complaint has been with the humidifier. Unless I set at 1 on the humidifier settings, the thing runs dry in the wee hours of the morning. When it runs dry, it has no auto shutdown for the hot plate. You get the thrill of inhaling overheated plastic and an overly dry mouth. That little elevator that lifts the water tank about an inch means that the tank must be down sized at each corner which takes away water capacity. I switched to a Res Med 10 a few months ago and the problem went away. I keep it set at about the middle and it works fine. Very disappointed that the did not fix the problem.

For the life of me i can't work out why 95% of people have no problems with the water running dry but for some it just runs out super quick! Has to be some sort of heater plate fault i think. It must run too hot and just zap the water dry too quickly. Great to hear you managed to fix the problem but shame you had to switch manufacturers to do so. Appreciate the insights. All the best. My dream station one is just over 5 years old. This past week I had a doctors appointment and all is good with my sleep apnea treatment. I have been working with my pressures (thanks to you). I brought up the disintegrating foam shooting into my lungs from the dream station 1 to my doctor, she was unaware of any problem, but suggested that since my machine was past the 5 year mark, she would put in an order for a new one for me. My current medical supply company only offers me a choice of two machines, the DS 2, and the Air sense 11. Neither of the two seemed to impress you very much, granted I think you only had the manual for a quick review of the air sense 11. If you had to buy a new CPAP machine today, which brand would you go with? I am pretty sure I can change supply company if it’s one they don’t carry. I definitely want one that I can play with the pressures. I also think that my insurance, the way it sounded from my doctor, will only cover a new machine every 5 years. So I agree with you and am not getting a warm and fuzzy feeling with a 2 year warranty. Thanks for all the videos and for any suggestions you may have for me on a new machine.

    Every change they made is a negative for me. After receiving the DS2, I wanted to keep my DS1, but Philips they won't take back the DS2 and they are threatening to charge me for the it. I'm pissed because I paid a lot for the DS1 and the "replacement" they sent is inferior and not an equal trade. I like the white case, as said here, the shiny black shows fingerprints and any speck of dust. The humidification chamber on the DS1 is perfect for cleaning and ease of use compared to the DS2. The DS1 display is easier to read and you can read it when you are standing or in bed. The decreased weight of the DS2, and the immobile tube connector, makes me worry I will accidently yank it off of my bedside table when moving at night. My DS1 gets pulled around, but has stayed on the table. I'm currently looking at ResMed options.

I don't use the humidifier so had that part disconnected on the Dreamstation I and now forced to have a bigger machine as I can't disconnect the humidifier on the II. Because of the recall though, forced to use the II and really disliking it. The air pressure doesn't even feel the same and feels like I'm suffocating at the same pressure level that I used for the last 5 years. Do we think the recall was really necessary? I got a free DS2 due to the recall. There's probably no chance to change it to a new machine...
    I do find it much quieter than the DS1.
    It hides under my bedside table, and I only use it at night... So I don't care a bit about the aesthetics EXCEPT the button light which is IMPOSSIBLE to turn off (when the machine is in idle mode), which is a pain when my wife goes to bed before I do. The light is bloody bright in the dark.
    The lack of ability to disconnect the humidifier is a bit of a pain. I don't use the humidifier, so my DS1 was always nice and compact. But the DS2 is quite large by comparison.
    Overall, I don't mind it.

    Dream Station is being recalled. I so appreciate the info as I am considering whether to go with the Dream Station 2 which is not part of the recall. Thanks

      Hi there, i certainly can understand your frustration but all the DME and CPAP clinics will have very little knowledge or understanding of the situation yet as they have only been heard about it yesterday. We're all just going to have to be very patient with this. It's not a quick fix. Nick

    I just got my recall replacement in the form of the DS2. I opened the outer box and saw the papers with the pictures of this replacement. I took one look and said this POS, no way. I paid out of pocket about $1600 for my DS only to be given an $800 DS2. replacement. Havent decided how to handle it yet. Oh and it showed up yesterday. They did not even email me to tell me it was being mailed.

      Sorry to hear that mate, i can imagine the disappointment after waiting so long. The Philips algorithm is also rubbish, here's the vid - czcams.com/video/j0BnXaruxFU/video.html . Good luck brother

    Thank you for the insightful critique of DS2. I call it the retaliatory design.

    Spot on. The water running out, the shit lid are a big issue. I tend to wake up dry mouthed when the water runs out and shut it off.
    PS the sound level is quieter.
