This was very emotional for me personally....I did 16 and a half years...yes, YEARS and when I was released I had a job waiting for me and I went to work the next day. And hear me when I say this, I thank "GOD" for the grace and mercy He showed me through the people He put in my pathway to help me transition after I got. I've been out now for almost 18 years and haven't looked back (other than to send those I left behind a little something when I can). The journey hasn't been a cakewalk, but it is possible to come out and make it. We're out here...

Takes a strong man to shed tears in front of others.
This is the life we live, as a man who spent 28 years calendar years in a cage. Parole revocations, and drug centers 45 days 90 days 6 month turn around. I'm now looking for an answer to life on the outside. My license was revoked and I was arrested for warrants lost my disability claim. Everyday is a constant battle to stay afloat and not go under. My money problems are mine I earned them but this world is harder than jail I know now why guys go back over and over. They can't get it to stay together. Prison beds are hard but they come with a great deal of security. Prison raised me from a boy. That hell was my mother and my father. I could depend on state support like no other it provided for me food, shelter, medicine. It was the stability I needed as young men we want a routine prison gave me a home that I hated and loved. I would go in and miss my family. Get out and miss my family I have not been socialized friends are gone and girls too. When you get out you are more isolated then when your locked down in ad.seg. (24hour lockdown) I was there for 6 years before I came home. If I could only explain the emotional trauma my mind went through. There were guys in longer and with far more time.But some people did horrific things they deserve punishment I'm just an old dope fiend. Put in ad set because I would not stop using drugs. I only got clean when I got off parole.men don't know how to live in this world and it's to fast and to hard to keep up. I never want to go back ever I have a wide range of skills and talents but don't know how to show them or get a chance for a real job not just a shovel I'm more than just a strong back. I could use the money , but to be appreciated that's the reward I look for. When will I get the respect I earned inside. The answer is never because people in this world don't care and our society is shamed because of us Our children will be the cattle that feeds the prison system need for continued production. We teach our poorer children that it's ok to get locked up. It's broken beyond repair.

GOD is faithful & works through others who are faithful to help help those who otherwise wouldn't stand a chance. Rewatch the show. That man said he was "blessed". And if you were to ask him I can guarantee you he will tell you it is his faith in God & his beliefs in GOD that help him stay on the straight & narrow & not go back to what got him in trouble to begin with. I pray for Gods blessings to overflow on that family & my own as my fiance is soon to be released next month after serving 15 years incarcerated. God bless you all!🙏🏼🙌
The fact that he said he was happy to be able to turn the cable back on so that his daughter can stay inside where it's safer than being outside. I never would have even thought of that. It brings tears to my eyes right now. She should be running around outside playing until the street lights come on like we did in the 80's.

If you think your roll as a Father is NOT important; this is a perfect example. I NEVER went a day without speaking or seeing My Father. He taught me soooo many life lessons that has molded me today! I miss mine EVERYDAY!

I just don't understand your comment because they are no punctuation marks and African American People has a history of putting each other down. Sometimes no matter how great a dad can be. once they are divorced or not with their child's mother, the mother attempts to poison the child and there are thousands of men out there who want a good caring relationship with their children and cant because of harsh laws that favour the mother in America and for one reason or the other. There is a seriousness of fatherlessness out here. I was never in jail, but was kept from my daughter. I paid my child support and her mother told her that I did want her. From 2000 to 2009 I did not see her. After fighting, court battles and lots of tears, I finally got her. The problem was she was an older teen set in her ways, my health was getting worse. As of now my daughter is 21, we don't speak, I have Congested Heart Failure and walk around with a heart pump. Not a day goes pass I don't think about her, my heart is broken because my only child is not a part of my life. The one thing I thought I would strive in would be a father, I just hope before I die I can have a relationship with her.

Being a dad is so amazing....I lost so much time with my kids because I was on drugs or locked up....I had walked like a tough person...acted like a tough person...alot of people feared me...if they only knew the scared insecure little boy that I really was....I had no confidence to go look for real work...my pops taught me to sell drugs.....he put me down so much as a kid I had no confidence in me...so all I did was sell...or do illegal shit....I would cry and beg God to show me a better way....to give me confidence in myself...finally started working in the oilfield..which I did on and off...but I started to learn and be a good hand...then became a boss...now I have an amazing job...and spend so much time with my kids and now my awesome grandson as well...it's crazy tho how the time flys by when you are lost in your own mind and have no clue how to get out of there....til this day I live in shame for how I was and for all the time I lost with my babies.....I wish the best for this man....that beautiful baby girl needs him for many many years to come.

I can relate to this brother,cause I served a year in prison back in 2002 for dealing drugs!Im glad I went to jail,cause I needed to that time to reflect on my mistakes in life!When I got out,it took me 2 weeks to find employment and I been doing good every since they let me out!Now I tell my story to other guys in the streets and they listen to me!Family means a lot to me,because they had my back when I was in prison!I also just got back into church and it really feels good!When you get older,you see things differently!I felt like God let me go thru those bad times to show others which way to go in life!Same thing Joseph in the Bible went thru when his brothers threw him in the pit and sold him into slavery,but he ended up saving their lives and they lived with him many years!

I'm pretty sure there were things done behind the scenes to help this family besides the $5,000. Anything above zero is increase. Everything you do for someone doesn't have to be publicized. God will reward openly with what u do in private. Steve used to be homeless at one point in time I'm pretty sure he looked out more ways than one.

Just the part about the little girl saying she and her dad watch tv together and watch cartoons automatically brought tears to my eyes bc that brought back a memory of what my dad and I use to do at times. He is deceased now 20 yrs but knowing he's not here now makes me feel like he left us recently. I truly miss him.

Thank you Steve Harvey for discussing the need for rehabilitation in our judicial system. We always say we want to live in a better world. However, we often forget the inner strength that it is required in order to collectively do so; we often look over the need of forgiveness and understanding in order to help each other grow.

+Melissa Cole I'm sorry to hear about your sons. My son is also incarcerated and just like your son's grew up without his father, lack of money and not so great resources. I tried my best but he still ended up in prison. I wish there was something we could do to help our sons.

I did not realize what I loving giving God-fearing person you was until I watch on CZcams with the man that has been in jail and got out and was with his family. The prison system in USA is terrible. We should focus on rehabilitation, not punishment
Gingercorn I'm sorry but that's just not true, yes there are certain crimes were we should try and help them but there are also crimes were the people deserve to be punished for the crimes at the fullest extent of the law
While I agree with your statement, I believe people who are truely suffering with addiction should be rehabilitated. Pedophiles, murderers, rapists, etc. should be punished for the crimes at the fullest extent of the law.

It's hard enough to be away from your family for any reason as a parent but to be in prison for a crime that could have just been probation and and help a be father to his little girl . But to have gone through what he has and still be a real man is awesome
