We're in Athens, Greece! In this 4 part series we're exploring Greece's capital city to hunt down the best local food. With a culinary tradition dating back thousands of years- you can guarantee this city has a delicious food culture worth exploring. In this video we find Athen's best souvlaki pita- the king of Greek street food. Chunks of pork threaded onto a skewer, grilled and then stuffed into a pita with yoghurt, parsley, spice, onions and tomatoes. It's mouthwatering.
Next up we visit the last dairy bar in Athens for some authentic sheep's milk Greek yoghurt and honey before finding Athen's best loukoumades- Greek donuts. We finish up with a classic meze feast. Meze consists of a number of hot and cold savoury dishes which you snack on over drinks- it's social, fun and one of the best ways to sample Greek classics like tzatziki, saganaki, Greek salad and more. Souvlaki pita at O Kostas souvlaki, Pentelis 5, Athina 105 57. Open Monday to Friday 9:30am to 3:30pm (often sells out earlier so don't get there late!)
Greek yoghurt at Stani (Στάνη), Marikas Kotopouli 10, Athina 104 32. Open Monday to Saturday 6:30am to 10:45pm and Sunday 7:30am to 10:45pm.
Loukoumades at Krinos (Κρίνος), Aiolou 87, Athina 105 51. Open Monday, Wednesday, Saturday 7:00am to 5:00pm and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 7:00am to 8:30pm.
Meze at Της θεάτρου το στεκι, Theatrou 7, Athina 105 52. Open daily 5:00am to 8:00pm.

There is so much variety on one ingredient so many ways that its prepared so many different flavors.
Let's take pork for example.
You can have it:
Grilled( xoirines mprizoles)
Fried(Tigania)
With cabbage
With lemon sauce (lemonato)
With celery augolemono(me selino)
Kalamaki
Gyros
Kontosouvli
Apaki...etc
Its endless and this is just one meat lol..🇬🇷💙

Yesss O Kostas is awesome!! Went there back in 2014. That fresh parsley adds such a nice flavor. So clean they even give you change with tongs so they don’t touch the money!
His set up is the most pristine we’ve ever seen! Man that souvlaki was soooo good!

fun fact: in Athens, if you order a souvlaki they indeed give you a wrapped with pita souvlaki but in Thessaloniki they only give you the meat on the stick. (Athenians and Thessalonikes have been fighting about what souvlaki is for years)

@@ChasingaPlate Either that, or you would have to specify "Pita Gyros" if you want your pita to have gyros, or "Pita souvlaki" if you want your pita to have the large chunks of meat that have been on the skewer previously. If you just say souvlaki, they will give you the stick with the skewered meat, but no pita. That's for the Thessaloniki and maybe other places in the north.

Forget everything about greek joghurt what you know, until you had some in greece you never taste the REAL deliciousness, right? 15:18 the spicy taste of tzatziki comes from garlic it has cucumber yogurt olive oil and garlic vinegar white wine dill pepper and salt it’s even easy to make it in home if u search if ❤️

Note to foreigners, Greek yogurt is not as watery as the crappy 'greek' yogurt you buy at your local shops.

A quick and decent meal that is a good representation of slowly cooked meats on coals is a place called Paradosiako (Traditional) near Monastiraki station. You wont be disappointed

Wow the food in Greece looks amazing. I definitely agree shared plate eating is the best. I think thats why im so drawn to Asian style eating. Now the Mezza style has me intrigued too. Another great video guys.

@@ChasingaPlate You should try next time if posible, Loutraki fresh traditional rose Greek loukoumia. Loutraki is a city near Athens, close to Isthmus of Corinth. No packed loukoumia from the supermarket, fresh.

I love seeing all the lesser-known ruins and historical sites, but I'm with you 100% on getting out of the touristy areas for food. I think I would live on meze if I spent any time in Greece. Those veggies looked so fresh in the salad...simply and lightly dressed. This video was an absolute joy to watch, guys!

Finished it all! 😀👍 When I research food destinations, there are so many places I want to try so I always *_graze._* Exceptions - degustation and omakase but actually any sushi may end up being the entire meal if I hit a place I really like. But even if a resto is highly regarded and I'm tempted to go for many courses, if it's a la carte I still skip the appetizer and dessert courses for other places. It's worked out very well in my travels.
That's a great strategy Tosh- it's what we tend to do as well when we're research eating 😀

The Saganaki cheese looks (and by what you ere saying) sounds like Halloumi cheese - taste great if its grilled - sort of a rubbery texture that can be squeeky and is a little salty once cooked - one of my fav Greek cheeses! (13:35)
Yes, halloumi is one of the types of cheeses used in saganaki! We weren’t sure if this was halloumi or some other sheep’s cheese so steered clear of saying what it was 😄 It’s so delicious! Cheers, Sheena

The cheese used in saganaki is called kefalograviera.. yes I know a mouthful..lol......

@@ChasingaPlate Similar but not exactly the same. Kefalograviera is actually a graviera that's closer to Kefalotyri, so it's a saltier, harder graviera. Kefalotyri on the other hand, is even saltier and harder, it's the Greek Pecorino Romano.
