Athens is a city that I’ve wanted to visit ever since learning so much about it during one of my Western Civilizations classes in High School. Finally, I had a chance to visit, not only for the amazing history, but mainly for the amazing Greek food!
In this video, I’m taking you on a one day, all out Greek food tour of Athens along with Tassos. We ate a combination of classic Greek street food snacks, and a few restaurants, including for dinner some of the best lamb chops I’ve ever had.
Here are all the restaurants and places included in this Greek food tour of Athens:
Dexameni Cafe - Our first stop was to drink Greek coffee in this small public square. A great environment, and the coffee was excellent.
Price - 1.80 EUR per cup
Kostarelos Deli - Tassos knows his Greek cheese and he says Kostarelos Deli has some of the best cheese in Athens.
Total price - 14.60 EUR
Mam - Mam is often considered the best Greek cheese pie in Athens, and it’s a perfect street food kind of place. Most people take-away, but they have a standing table as well. The classic Greek cheese pie was my favorite.
Total price - 4.80 EUR
Varvakios Market - This is the Athens central market for meat and seafood. It’s a beautiful market and any lover would enjoy walking around this amazing market.
Miran - Pastourma and Soutzouki - This is a really cool little deli in Athens where you can buy for takeaway or order whatever you see and sit at one of the tables to snack. They are known for their camel pastirma, and it was the best thing we tried - absolutely excellent.
Total price - 4.62 EUR
Bougatsopoleio Thessaloniki - Bougatsa is a famous Greek food pastry. We tried a couple versions, but the best for me was the minced meat filled bougatsa.
Total price - 15.50 EUR
Kostas Soulvaki - Souvlaki, also known as kalamaki is perhaps the best known of all Greek street food or Greek fast food, and Kostas is considered to be one of the best places to eat it in Athens. They grill pork, stuff it into Greek pita, top it with tomatoes, onions, and tomato sauce, and wrap it into a handheld treat. Amazing.
Price - 2.20 EUR per piece
Taverna To Trigono - For dinner, Tassos wanted to take us to one of his favorite restaurants in Athens, a little outside of the city in a place called Kalyvia Thorikou. This is a countryside meat paradise, and they served us some of the best lamb chops I’ve ever had in my life. An amazing meal to end an incredible day of Greek food in Athens.
Lamb chops
Total price for everything - 99 EUR
Thank you for watching this Greek food tour of Athens!

When you meet Greek people and eat their food you are going to fall in love.
Last week I went to Greece only to eat greek food. I came back to Italy two days later with 80kg overweight... but it was awesome...
As someone who loves Italian cuisine this is some high praise. Much love to Italy
Mark: Food is amazing
Tasos: Yeah yeah yeah
Mark: Ok lets split the bill
Tasos: No no no

Greek, what u expect 😂
Accurate. A Greek would insist on paying for the whole thing.
So true when i go out with friends i instist on paying and all do the same until we agree another pays next time
😂😂😂😂
I'm watching people eating and having fun in Greece in 2017 without masks and social distancing and it feels an eternity ago.
🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷🇺🇸🇺🇸 I Love Mark's expression when he taste's the different food
My observation from this video is Greek people seems to be very friendly towards babies. Micah's cuteness helps too!
Little Micah has already travelled more than most people in the world.. yeah yeah yeah!
Tanin Nahar 😂😂😂
Can I travel to you? 😍💐
Tanin Nahar yea yea yea yea...😂😂😂
I feel sorry for the parents. To carry a baby on their travels. Better to leave the kid at Grandma's.
The Greek food culture is totally underrated. One of the great food cultures in the world.
Are you joking?
The Culinary Letdown: A Californian Quest for Gourmet in Greece: When our food-obsessed group, proudly wearing our Californian foodie badges, decided to embark on a culinary journey to Athens, our spirits were as high as the ancient Acropolis. The land that gifted the world democracy surely had a plethora of flavors awaiting us. Instead, we were met with a flavor plateau that left us yearning for more.
The perpetual offering of souvlakis with unapologetically stale bread became a predictable fixture of our Athenian dining experience. The red and green bell peppers dolmas, while vibrant on the plate, echoed a monotonous tone on our palates. We couldn't help but wonder: Where was the fresh baked bread warm from the hearth? Or the comforting embrace of a hot soup or the gentle warmth of a well-brewed tea? Aspects that should have been staples in such a storied land.
Ironically, back in the Golden State, our local Whole Foods flaunts an olive bar that is reminiscent of a mini Mediterranean festival. Yet, in Athens, supermarkets seemed to treat olives with casual indifference, limiting their variety and essence.
Having explored more than 80 establishments across mainland Greece and its islands, our enthusiasm began to wane. We found ourselves booking a hasty weekend retreat to the gastronomic haven of Antalya, Turkey. And what a relief that was! Turkey, with its rich culinary canvas, proved to be a stark contrast. The food was not just food - it was art, it was a story, it was, dare we say, seductive
American hate the Greeks and will always criticize. Your food leave much to be desired.
@@jeffmorrison2915 So one person's review represents everything? If that was the case, there isn't a single country with good food in the world.

@@888MANOS I have been exceeded
The expression on Micha's face everytime dad took a bite is priceless bless him. Even though this video is a few yrs old i couldn't get over how cheap some of the meals and snacks were, even that huge meal at the end for everything only coming to E99 is damn good value, Jesus, the amount of meat was something else lol and finally, after working in a Greek restaurant i was expecting to see Mousaka on the menu but maybe in another episode in the future. I do have to say that Greek cuisine is amongst the best in the world and way under-rated. Loved the video from start to finish.
I loved how people were giving attention to Micha.. Greek people seems so humble and nice.. people do the same to babies in my country as well,. I hardly see this in foreign countries..Greece just won my heart
Some of us are nice, sure. But humble? If there was a way to count the ego of the people, Greece would be proud they have the biggest ego in the world
@@chrisandreadakis4217 I know that.. I just wish people could be more better
@@sakuraharuno4667 Yeah that could be nice. But , I'm at least happy I just met one ☺️
Greece is on my "before I die" list, i just think for how many years they have been on this earth, their food, history, ancient ruins, etc.
Thanks
I m from Greece and want now to eat a pie souvlaki aaaaaahhhhhhhh
@r α δ Modz thank you for your advice and for sure someday hopefully I will be there 👍
My family has been going for some time and said it’s filthy with trash.
It was dirty. But not too the point where it makes you feel uncomfortable. Paris is dirty. So is basically all main city. Go to Greece. Athens is great. Chalkida has great beaches without being insanely filled with tourists. The people are friendly and its cheap. The history is awesome. Mind blowing

I am a Greek American. Greek food is really great. If you don't eat meat or fish, Greek food has so many dishes without that. I enjoy the Greek Salad, the Green Bean stew. As an Athenian I have to apologize for the guide's ignorance, Mark. He even asked for gyros in a place that only serves souvlaki, plus he seems to be rude at times. I hope you enjoyed your stay in the city. You are a such a lovable person with that smile always on.
Yeah, I agree. The guide seems rude and very impatient..Mark, you have a wonderful personality...Love this channel!..Thanks sooo much!
I visited Greece in August of 2017, and the people there were some of the friendliest I have ever met in my life! Love their culture and food.

You mean Swiss? The video before this he was In Switzerland.
TheJattMC μπακλαβα
There's a big difference between the Mediterranean culture/hospitality and the Europeans from what I've seen
So true.
The strong Middle Eastern and Balkan element of Greek culture (since the ancient Hellenistic times up to the Byzantine-and-Ottoman Empire) makes Greece much more hospitable and very different than Western Europe. Greece essentislly has nothing Western European as a cultural aspect and I believe that is a very good thing.

@@JC-tb4cz You must be a creative writer, judging by the false Greek historical facts your spread.
@@JC-tb4cz History has one truth and it is that Macedonians were ethnically never Greek. The truth is even spoken by high profiled Greeks who admit that Macedonia was forcefully taken and partitioned by Greece, Albania, Serbia & Bulgaria (Treaty of Bucharest (1913) after the two Bloody Balkan Wars. Greece executing genocide towards hundreds and thousands of ethnically Macedonians who lived in Aegean Macedonia to clean them out of their own homes and land (Now called Northern Greece) and the The 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey to erase any trace of Macedonia or Macedonian in that region. You cannot deny this did not happen? It did actually happen.
I spent 29 mins listening carefully to yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah….Tasos you rock!
I love ther look on Micah's face when you were eating the yogurt with honey.... I could just hear him saying 'but daddy I want some' 😊
Legend has it that Lennon & McCartney were struggling with the chorus lyrics when writing She Loves You. Tassos stepped up, the rest is history
I love the expressions on his baby's face as he taking a bite of something. He's thinking, "Damn I'd like a bite of that too!!!"
yeah yeah yeah.
The first area (Kolonaki) they got the fried cheese etc, is perhaps the most expensive area of Athens! It's a shopping area, for the designer's clothing, that you need 2000 euros to buy a bloody bag, so that's why they paid 16+ euros for a Feta Saganaki (that fried cheese with costs normally around 3 to 4 euros) and a couple spoons of cheese, which is a pure robbery. lol! They paid 500% more than normal, or so.
Second place (Mam) with the cheese pies, etc. it's truly legendary! There's quality has stood still in time. They served they cheese pies for past decades. Very rare to find in Athens nowadays, the days of frozen food. I like that Mark went in a Bougatsa place (12:15) to show how we make it because it's very hard to find these days and it's a very very skilled job! Very very few know today how to do it... A real dying breed... Bougatsa is the king (sweet flavor speaking) in the soul of the youths in Greece! haha
Furthermore, "Kostas" is a nice Souvlaki place, I've been there, but definitely not "the best". Not even by a long shot. For starters, if the meat skewer is not cooked on charcoal then it's somewhat of a replica. A wannabe souvlaki. lol. And that tomato sauce it's not "original" at all. Tzatziki sauce is the original. This is some twist of the shop. In my eyes, it's like you're putting mayonnaise on a pizza. Nevertheless is better that they went there and not some very touristic place, like "Bairaktaris" or "Thanasis" which is flood with tourists thinking they're eating the "Greek souvlaki" when in reality it's the most pathetic quality you can get. lol! Pure garbage. Don't be a mouse in a trap and avoid at all costs!
I've been also to the taverna "Trigono" and Kalivia area. Kudos to the guy that took you there cause you can't find better meat anywhere near Athens! It's like 30km out of the center of Athens but worths the trip. The prices are a little bit pinched up, but the quality pays up. The lamb chops are nothing less than divine! And I'm not even a lamb meat lover. lol! I can't have enough food when I go there!
Thank you for visiting our country, Mark! I hope you enjoyed your stay in our city. And everybody else considering coming! :) I've been all around Europe (Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Barcelona, Madrid, etc. to name just a few cities!) and in my opinion, Athens is the urbanest and most "underground" city of all! The vibe here is just unmatchable. The crisis has taken a big hit to the city, to its people and Athens is not the same as 10+ years ago. But the vibe is still great! I always leaving to live abroad, but I always come back cause there's nowhere like Athens! I feel blessed that I grew up chilling in the rocks below Parthenon temple. In a city that stands for 4000 years. A timeless piece of history. Here's to the next 4000 years! Αθήνα

Hi,for food you should go to Monastiraki area for fantastic gyros and kebabs and to Plaka area for more traditional and variety dishes. You go at both places by foot from Syntagma and are always populated by both locals and tourists.
There are even better and more traditional places ofcourse but you wont find them easy without greek guide, they are much outside of the center and Athens is huge.
For shopping ofcourse we have the Ermou paved street which is the most known and the first thing you see on Syntagma and you will notice that Athens lucks a real shopping mall building, indeed we have one huge but its outside of the center, you go there with the metro-station Neratziotissa.
Also we have Kolonaki area (by foot from Syntagma) but its more expensive, its for rich people there :)

Τhanks again,a big kiss to you :-*
Greece is truly an amazing place, I had much better food on the islands though. Notice how warm and friendly the Greek people are with Marks child? this is their natural and wonderfully warm nature.
I’m Portuguese and Greek food is the only cuisine that comes close to the quality of ours. Amazing people also! 💖
I thought Spanish food was similar
@@wildberry752 Not at all. Too much fried stuff. Not very varied.
what about italy?
@@SKPONEOFFICIAL I love Italian food but I don’t really care for mainstream dishes of Italy like pasta (I’m not a past person) or pizza. What I enjoy about Italian food is lesser known dishes like risotto di mare. Those are the real gems for me.
My sister & I gained 10 lbs each while visiting relates in Greece for three months!! The food is incredible & so are the people!!🇬🇷💙🇬🇷💙🇬🇷💙🇬🇷💙

I’ve been to Athens Rhodes and Crete and the food is simply amazing!
In all seriousness, Tasos was a great host and this was an amazing video, showcasing some really nice food :)
I've been to Greece many many times and it is the best place on this earth. The food is healthily simple but well prepared and tasty. The people are friendly and the sound of Cicadas is almost their national anthem, especially at dusk whilst eating some delicious BBQ and drinking an ice cold bottle of FIX Hellas.
The food isn't always simple, we have many "complicated" recipes! But yes, it's the best place on earth! 😁
@@niray3123 italy is the best food in the world from a greek😊
@@dmp_giorgakis2072 In your opinion 😁 I prefer Greek food 😊
@@niray3123 ok bro👌
/@@dmp_giorgakis2072 you mean 'was', since Greece was not on the map of gastronomy till now. Italy is a very good promoter of its goods. Greece is just starting to do so. For example spagetti descendant of noodles or pitsa descendant of 'plakous' or 'πλακούς' in Greek (so that you can look it up) And did you know that italians and spanish used to buy, at a low price all these years, the Greek olive oil in order to improve their own? Do you know that more than 80% of Greek olive oil is extra virgin, without even trying to do so? We are talking about the whole olive oil of the entire country. look it up. Italians may be good promoters but Greeks are blessed, thank Christ!
17:45 even in this situation he's just like: yeah yeah yeah
Keep up the good work you are doing. Helping out the restaurants industries not just the tourist's but also people who own business.

I've only just started watching Mark's videos, I'm now hooked. I particularly like these Greek ones as my mother was from Athens and it's brought back some amazing memories when I used to visit with her on holiday.
The Greek people are wonderful.
I love Greece it is best country I visited and I hope one day I will go back
now i want to learn greek.....

today i am starting the journey to becoming fluent in greek!
If your origin and your language is barbarian, it will be very tough. Greek are not a language made for idiots.
