- Athens, Greece may be more known for being the cradle of western civilization and birthplace of democracy but we think the food is the most important attraction in the city! Greek food is honestly some of the best food you'll ever eat and the Greek capital has an incredible variety of different spots for you to try out. We spent a week in Athens eating all the delicious food it has to offer and we thought we'd share our top 10 restaurants in Athens that we enjoyed the most during our stay here. From mouthwatering Greek meats, to-die-for gyros, and pitas, to comforting taverna classic and delectable Greek desserts, the Greek capital has something for everyone to enjoy!
This is not a definitive Greek food guide but merely a reflection of our own experience but we do hope this video may still be useful to you. Local knowledge is still the best knowledge!

I absolutely love Greek food and personally I think it's even better than Italian! Spanakopita, dolmades, tyrokefteri, saganaki, domatokeftedes, so many great dishes!
I stayed in Athens for almost 10 days in the central area of Monasteraki. I really enjoyed authentic Greek foods in vintage restaurants in Plaka and most especially in the central market of Athens which is frequented by the locals with very reasonable price
Athens is an international city! Very contrasting and cool! And Greek cuisine is one of the best in the world!

Another great spot for breakfast is "Stani" (Στάνη) near Omonia Square. One of the best spots for traditional Greek yogurt and cream along with other breakfast dishes.

This is my first time watching your channel and I LOVE GREEK food. I’m Filipina but grew up in Aus and you guys look filo to me. Greek is my fave food even above filo and Italian. I often tell Greeks that Filipinos and Greeks are very similar it’s all all about Food, Familly and Fun. (I also said fighting but king of as a joke) 😂 Don’t come for me it’s just my personal observation.

Hello! Yes we are originally from Manila but live in Auckland 😊 We agree, we really felt the very warm Greek hospitality there and the food was amazing! Also loved how alot of the dishes came with rice 😅
There is also a Yogurt shop near the OMONIA square that has been there for over a hundred years and they still use the same coulture from back then to make the yogurt.

I am very glad that you also visited Greece and liked it. but be sure that you didn't get to know the homemade flavors and the very, very delicious local foods and various recipes. From one end of Greece to the other and also the islands. I suggest you also go to Epirus, prefecture of Ioannina, to Zagorochoria. There are 46 villages, with houses built of stones, the roads with stone slabs and of beauty and food, not to mention the taste and deliciousness. Zagorochoria. Ζαγοροχώρια.

Kostas is top of the top...Also,epic souvlaki is Paris(Not the city LOL) in Alimos and great taverna Remoutsiko in Agios Dimitrios.These are not in the center but in southern suburbans.

Great list with great places for good and comfort food! I have visited most of them and i'll certainly visit and the rest! I loved everything! Giros, Greek grill, fishes, Greek salad, pie with spinach and pie with orange, loucoumades, Greek coffee! Now i am hungry ahahaha! 😊

"O Thanasis" is near Monastiraki Square. Syntagma square is further away.

In Greece, tripe is lauded as a preventative for a hangover. There are many 24 hour or overnight tripe restaurants. I prefer some tripe on a plate with some lemon squeezed over it. The one time I tried tripe soup I didn't care for it....too...tripey.

Lol, thank you guys for making a video about Greek food in Athens, so delicious. Except of some of the Pita dishes at the in your video mentioned Kostas restaurant, I have never heard before of any dish even though the 'Greek' community is huge here. Spelling can very greatly but here they are called like Souvlaki,Tarama,Bureko, a pastry like thing called Phyllo served with Pistacchio and other Ice Cream, food called Suzuki or Sousoukaki, and most notoriously, Zaziki. Actually it is a sauce but some younger Greek and especially the Non-'Greek'people here eat it like a soup (there might be a separate Zaziki like soup dish but I am sure it tastes better and unknown here) after covering e.g. their salads with it and having mostly unlike in Greece a thick and almost gooey consistency the Non-'Greek' people here eat it bucketwise like some people (I think US-Americans) eat ketchup, dipping everything imaginable from sausage to boiled/baked potatoes into it or drink.

The Culinary Letdown: A Californian Quest for Gourmet in Greece:
When our food-obsessed group, proudly wearing our Californian foodie badges, decided to embark on a culinary journey to Athens, our spirits were as high as the ancient Acropolis. The land that gifted the world democracy surely had a plethora of flavors awaiting us. Instead, we were met with a flavor plateau that left us yearning for more.
The perpetual offering of souvlakis with unapologetically stale bread became a predictable fixture of our Athenian dining experience. The red and green bell peppers dolmas, while vibrant on the plate, echoed a monotonous tone on our palates. We couldn't help but wonder: Where was the fresh baked bread warm from the hearth? Or the comforting embrace of a hot soup or the gentle warmth of a well-brewed tea? Aspects that should have been staples in such a storied land.
Ironically, back in the Golden State, our local Whole Foods flaunts an olive bar that is reminiscent of a mini Mediterranean festival. Yet, in Athens, supermarkets seemed to treat olives with casual indifference, limiting their variety and essence.
Having explored more than 80 establishments across mainland Greece and its islands, our enthusiasm began to wane. We found ourselves booking a hasty weekend retreat to the gastronomic haven of Antalya, Turkey. And what a relief that was! Turkey, with its rich culinary canvas, proved to be a stark contrast. The food was not just food - it was art, it was a story, it was, dare we say, seductive
That's a shame you didn't have the same amazing food experience we did 😭 Turkey is definitely on the bucket list tho cuz Turkish food is just divine!

The gastronomic options at Athens airport are disappointingly sparse, with nothing more than a single, uninspiring soggy spanakopita stand. Furthermore, the condition of Piraeus port, the embarkation point to over 200 inhabited paradisiacal Greek islands, is reminiscent of a scene from war-ravaged Afghanistan, a complete catastrophe. It is evident that Greece, a nation brimming with potential, is unfortunately not capitalizing on its assets. This situation continues to leave us in a state of profound astonishment.

Next time try tea called "tea of mountain" tsai tou vounou. It is very healthy.
The tip to eat great food in Greece is to make friend a greek and eat their mother's dishes.
For desert great is chalva in BBQ with lemon and cinamon especially if you drink retsina is good mezes.
