Hello again from ATHENS, Greece! In this episode, we are taking you for a local street food tour around the Central Market (Varvakios Central Market) in downtown Athens. Surrounding this market is a tons of traditional restaurants and street foods!
We are taking you to a secret underground restaurant called Diporto, where there is no menu; the chef serves you whatever fresh ingredients he’s prepared for the day. We are also taking you for coffee at a local institution: Mokka. Here, they make strong Greek coffee in hot sand. Next we will take you into the heart of the Central Market to show you the local seafood catches, and we’ll show you a traditional Ouzeri. Ouzeris serve ouzo and mezedes (small plates) which can be sourced directly from the market. These are really cool joints where you can eat super local food and chat with locals. For dessert, we are taking you to Krinos, for loukoumades served with honey, cinnamon and vanilla ice cream. To finish off the street food tour, we will take you for a full meal at Telis Steakhouse. This shop serves charcoal grilled pork chops and a delicious SPICY and grilled salad. What an incredible day of eating!

The warm salad is called bouyourdi - tomatoes, feta, peppers, olive oil, oregano served hot!
You go to places that the tourist guides mention... Terrible management... Next time you are going to visit Greece ask US the Greeks of Athens where to go and what to order from these places!!! You can not imagine the taste and the images you are going to have from an inormus variety from differnet foods. Street foods and restaurant foods!!!
I love your videos but as an Greek man from Athens let me say that the most places you ve visited so far are tourist traps. Especially Diporto which has nothing to do with the quality standards of Greek food. If you want to eat real greek food you have to visit some other areas away from the historical centre of Athens. Pagrati Petralona and Exarcheia are the most the most valuable places for good food. I recommend you those places: "Aster" in Petralona for marvelous meatballs, "Ouzeri Lesvos" in Exarcheia for shrimp saganaki, "Dickie Dee" for the best soft ice cream of Athens, "Grannys meatballs" in Pagrati, "Marrika Tarts" for amazing lemon pie , "Nancys sweet Home" for old traditional sweets.

By the way, there are many secret tavernas like this one. They are actually called Koutoukia and they never have a specific menu.
They cook different recipes every day, depending the seasonal products that are available for sale on each day and as you could see, they have small serves

These small serves are connected with the philosophy of this kind of taverna. They serve small amounts of high quality and tasty food, instead of large amounts of trash food.

It's so refreshing to see a culture that celebrates vegetables so much. That breakfast meal looked so appealing and so different from meat/carb heavy breakfasts in North America.
Greeks eat lots of vegetables dishes its true but this is not breakfast food. We take little breakfast actually, koulouria, small cake, toast, maybe yoghurt not a lot

This Athens series is so great and I only hope you visited a few other locations around the country for your enjoyment and ours. There’s a local Mediterranean cafe that makes coffee using that method and it always takes me back to Athens. And yes, I learned the hard way not to drink to the bottom of the cup. The Central Market is a must when in Athens.

Another great episode! I remember the tavern from Mark Wiens video in 2017. The price is surprisingly the same when he and his family ordered.
Judging from his video and yours, I could assume that the tavern indeed provides good meals for good price. The chickpea soup and the anchovy seems amazing!
