- We're in Athens, Greece! In this 4 part series we're exploring Greece's capital city to hunt down the best local Greek food. In this video we hunt down some Greek street food, sample popular local dishes and share a secret mezze restaurant with you, our favourite in Athens.
We start off with a breakfast pastry called bougatsa made of phyllo and semolina custard, washed down with the local drink of Freddo Espresso- espresso blended in a milkshake maker and served over ice. We then taste a kourou tiropita, a Greek feta pie from a local bakery which locals say do amazing pies. We then visit a family run peinirli shop and eat two mouthwatering peinirli- a boat shaped dough baked with a cheesy, buttery filling. We can totally see why these are so popular!
We end with a full mezze spread at Avli- a local taverna hidden behind a narrow door- it's a blink and you'll miss it kind of a place! From grilled loukaniko (sausage) to keftedakia (meatballs) we share some Greek mezze plates with you. Kourou tiropita at ΠΝΥΚΑ, Pratinou 13, Athina 116 34, Greece. Open Monday to Saturday 7:00am to 9:00pm, Sunday 7:00am to 6:00pm.
Peinirli at Peinirli Ionias, Panormou 3, Athina 115 22, Greece. Open Monday to Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm and Saturday 8:00am to 3:30pm.

Well that's normal since Greece was so many years under Ottoman Empire. In fact whole Balkan peninsula share the same food.
Its true we share lots of foods also love the fact that you didn't started a fight like other do and say that this foods are Turkish only!
@@thenin4e common foods between turkey and Hellas come from byzantium....you come from asian steps..asians dont eat dolmades yogurt and baklava...in Hellas we call this cuisine politiki from konstantinopole..turks were nomads.nomads dont eat those foods..
As I've see from video's Turks use so much oil and butter
People in Greece consume coffee more than any country... Greeks drink coffee in the morning!! Always! And the afternoon after lunch.. Also in Greece don't eat food unless they have salad on the table😂
Btw, next time you must visit a Greek island or Thessaloniki... (cities with perfect food)😃

Seems like he's the only bougatsa baker in all of Athens. 😂 Super popular place to film. The loukániko at the end looks perfect. Awesome start to the new series. 👍
🤣 he was actually our second choice- our first choice turned out to be an hour and a half out of the city and we ran out of time! It was hard to find places where the bougatsa is being made for the public to see 😄 oh my goodness that sausage was one of the best sausages I’ve ever eaten- we’re still talking about it 😆 thanks for watching and commenting Tosh! I grew up in an area with a large Greek population... All of what you had brings back such great food memories! My maid of honor (1974) was Greek, and her mother made the most amazing honey and walnut cake! It was very rich but it was heavenly I know you say you’re not big on sweets but if you see it while there ,you have to try it!!

In my country Algeria (in North Africa) we make those meat balls with fish meat usually with Sardine meat and we make a sauce and then we cover them with the sauce and then we use Kisra( traditional bread) and dip in it. The whole dish is called Kefta. 14:49 seeing these made me want some Kefta.

All the baked good looked yummy, but the mezze really gets the ball rolling for me. That's my style of eating! Like Turkish breakfast, lots of different flavors and textures, to mix and match, combine or enjoy solo. I'd never heard of the fava dip before...thought it was hummus. That and the tomato-cucumber salad have my mouth watering! Can't wait to see what other goodies you've found for us in Athens!

Bougatsa mmm anything stuffed with semolina or marzipan in pastry has got to be good anytime of the day. The Peinirli looked similar to a Pide and similar fillings, great choice of fillings. Loved the bakery being as is nothing flashy, it shows they concentrate on one style and do it well!
The Cafe Greg recommended (and great little find) on the Mezze plate the Loukaniko must try was it served with a mustard similar to other European sausages, l noticed you only popped on fresh lemon but could see a splodge of yellow on the plate? Looked sensational in cross section!! In Australia Fava beans are commonly known as Broad Beans. Can you suggest what canned bean l might use in Oz to give that a crack and lm definitely going to make the Fetta dip. Great Summery fresh meal. Thankyou.
I’m so glad Greg told us that no matter what we had to eat loukaniko in Greece. And I’m so glad that Avli just happened to do an amazing version! Yes that was mustard 😄 it went really well with the sausage. Maybe canned lima beans as a substitute if there are no tinned broad beans? Great to see you in Athens - this city appeals to us as it looks very gritty....right up our street. The boat shaped dough filled delight looked a lot like Turkish Pide....the dough looked so good. We love the idea of the mezze....great to sit and pick at lots of different dishes 😎😍

The first simple cheese patty did not impress me at all. But those butter football pastries with beef and sausage look to die for! That sausage looks smoked on your spread, is it? Also looks delicious! 🤤
