@ Brian Bever , well if you're riding it like you're supposed to, I wouldn't exactly call it safe. He's definitely clueless in most respects. He doesn't know how to work on them . He doesn't know how to ride them. Doesn't know how or when to shift or use the clutch. I'm thinking the only difference he knows between a 4 and 2 stroke is one has oil in the gas. But he still has a chance. We all had to learn sometime. Thing is, he doesn't seem to listen when people give him advice. At least not the right ones.
And the main thing about him that irritates me is he's doing all this just to make a quick buck. Doesn't have a clue what he's doing. He's not repairing them correctly. All he's doing is driving the prices up and making it harder for the right people to obtain these bikes. They should go to people who can fix them and ride them. Put them to use as intended. Not just rig them up to rip someone off and make a buck.
I had a yz490 for a few years, strong bike.
This guy hasn't figured out that a two stroke has to be cleaned out after warm up.

Why would you F'n put oil on the rotor? The rust would have worn off with use. Oil will glaze the pads.
As an old school 250 and 500 motocross racer, we used to say "it's loaded up," not bogging. The 250 and 500's back then vibrated a lot! Try shifting a little sooner to keep on the power band, you could here the power band fall off before each shift. Have fun with it! Awesome!

Bull. You don't need to rap these things out every moment of their existence just to keep the plug clear. These things were made to grunt out of corners from just off idle. People who rode them like 125s went to the hospital. And people who have badly-tuned bikes and listen to the "yeah man that's just how they are if your a pussy" crowd end up back on 4 strokes.
Raced these in 1984. I’m getting a little older in the bones but my mind most certainly remembers the friggin power this machine made, after you sorted out the WTF carb setup from the factory. I kept waiting to hear this machine get on the pipe with this kid perched on top. He’d have felt something else hitting his leg......as he crapped all over himself. Really enjoyed competing with the mid 80’s Yamahas. They were capable of delivering doom to the rest of the bikes in the moto.

Hi, I just wanted to let you know from 27 years of mechanical repair experience you probably shouldn’t leave your air cooled engine idling. Also warm up time for air cooled engines is minimal or nonexistent. Have you ever wondered why in some states lane splitting is legal. Have a look at the facts , Air cooled bikes are meant to keep moving the poor compression rings in that cylinder must’ve been glowing red when you were letting it run on your stand for five minutes or whatever it was. An air cooled for stroke is even more important, they run a lot hotter than two strokes. Maybe that bad ass old Yamaha can deal with that I don’t know for sure but I wouldn’t recommend it.
So with I ride a 1996 kx125 and I let it warm up for about 10 seconds give it a blip and then go low rpm low throttle for a little then slowly give it more to warm it up, now I also have a 2018 old 140 which is an air cooled four stroke and to warm that up I leave it sit until the clutch cover starts to feel a little warm and then take it easy until its fully warm now what u were saying about this bike was it was probably overheating to some extent would I also be warming my air cooled little 140 up wrong or is leaving a 4 stroke at idle for awhile alright?
i was just reading thru thr comments and saw this. this helps a lot because i have a air cooled bike and it heats up really hot when i leave it ideling so this helps a lot
It depends on the bike; generally the air-cooled 2-strokes take FOREVER to get dangerously hot. The Husqvarna race team back in the day recommend letting the bike idle until the cylinder was too hot to touch before setting off. They found that reduced wear to the rings dramatically. I've tried that with my air-cooled 250 Husky and usually I have to give up and start riding because everyone else in the group doesn't want to sit around for 10 minutes.
I'm sure on a 1200cc+ Harley, with those itty bitty cooling fins and absolutely zero oil cooling, sitting in traffic on the 405 on a 115 degree day, you can run into some problems. On these dirt bikes, your biggest concern is going to be the plug or powervalve (if there is one) getting loaded up with oil.
Now what you don't want to do, is do a big hard hot ride, and THEN sit and idle around. They will get hotter continuously as they sit, and if it's already hot when you start the process it'll get mega hot. But unlike an air-cooled 4-stroke, they do cool off real quick once you get moving again. Cooling off 3 quarts of oil takes ages.
Aircraft piston engines are air cooled four stokes but its very important to let those warm up properly, however they also have the atvantage of oil coolers as well as the propeller backdraft as well as running a richer mixture. Smaller bike engines might have an oil cooler at best
My warm up time on a two stroke engine is determined by many things. Ambient air temp, premium exhaust operating temp, cast or forged pistons, etc. I highly doubt these kids can comprehend how much those things matter.

Right. Those 500s only have two engine speeds. Off, and wide open, and they have a powerband like a sledge hammer. My brother had one back in the 1990s. TOTAL hill climbing fuckin MONSTER!

Mine was a bit boggy too, put an after market Answer muffler on and installed some Boison reeds and it transformed the bike. It would pull up big hill climbs at idle in second/third and pull of the bottom smove and crisp. Awesome.

Use to have one of these bikes in the late 80's early 90's. It doesn't the credit it deserves. I never had a problem dispatching other 500's. I would like to find another one, I love these old bikes. Would look great setting next to my 87 tt350.

I had an IT 465, with a 490 can, piston and carb on it. That bike was the best fire road and field bike I ever had. I had an IT 200 on the trailer right next to it when I did hare scrambles and enduro weekends. With the 490, it was like having an automatic- the thing had such good torque it didn’t matter what gear you had it in. Nobody without full armor would ever want to be close behind me when I put the power down, the big knobby would toss everything, big and small.... I used to carry shear pins for the kickstart....

your running it with the choke on they are the same engine as the it 490 when u lift the choke lever up thats it off down is on is how it works on the it 490
Great tip I also sprayed my brakes with wd40 before each moto. Best way to go straight to the A class.
Fuel mix and the exact right spark plug is absolutely critical on these bikes. You haven't actually hit the power band yet
I had a 1982 Suzuki RM465 and all I did was mix some Bel-Ray mc-1 racing oil at one bottle to 4 gallons of gas, which was about 40:1, and run a regular spark plug. The thing ran perfect, never fouled a plug, and never hurt the engine one time in 8 years. All I did was put a new top end on it every winter, and it ran great, no problems. Not sure about the YZ490, because I never had one, but my RM465 ran like a top for the entire 8 years I had it. Never played with the jetting or anything, never even touched the carb, except to clean it once in a while.
@@steves2241 I had YZs, they were very tempremental, would only run properly on a nipondenso plug, and the exact right oil mix. And if I were to ride 100 meters under power band it would fuel up and foul the plug. Both had been raced before I got them , so may not have had the standard set up. The 400 wasnt near as bad for this as the 125.
@@bruceaskin9645 Yeah that sucks, I never had that problem at all with my 82 Suzuki RM465. Ijust put gas in it at 40:1 with bel-ray mc-1 oil and it ran perfect. When I first got it I fouled a plug once or twice, because I was not running it hard enough, but I figured that out real fast, within a week or so, and then after that for the next 8 years I never fouled a plug one time. You have to run the big bores hard or they will foul a plug.
I really liked that RM465, and I still wish I had it today. It was the best bike I ever owned, and I had 1 other RM, plus a PE250. In 8 years all I ever did was a new top end every winter, and put gas in it, never had to change the jetting or any carb settings one time.

Very powerful bike.. Will be worth alot restored.. Should consider restoring complete bike and keeping it for a few years.
But in 2 years it will be even more rare and worth more to a collector I'd keep it and pass it down to my kids and try to get them to do the same... imagine what people would pay for that thing 20 or 30 years from now when the market is overrun by electric bullshit 🤔😂😂

Shit, doesn't look like it needs much restoring. I'd clean it up a bit. Get all the plastic white again. New reed valves , rings, and new tires. Next port it .and shave the head and lighten the piston. Set up the suspension for my weighr. Then I'd run the piss out of it. Show these new 4strokes why they should have 2 strokes. If you had one of these bikes why would you want to sell it?

My buddy George had one exactly like this one.......he was a very good “B” class rider..../his 490 stood up at about 60mph in sugar sand.....he came off and broke his back......

I had a 1982 Suzuki RM465 for 8 years from 1982 until 1990. And the first thing you need to do with a big bore 2 stroke is get the piston to top dead center then kick it over with everything you got. If you do, it should start on the 2nd or 3rd kick when it is cold and the choke is on, and the 1st kick when it is warm, my Suzuki RM did, every time for 8 years, ran great, started great, and I never had any motor or carb problems with it in the 8 years I had it.
The second thing is, a big bore 2 stroke will not warm up sitting at idle like a 250 or a 125 will, it dont work that way. You have to get on it and rip it through the gears at full throttle to get it to clean out, or it will just sputter and run like shit until you foul a plug. I found that out the 1st 3 or 4 times I rode it.
Then once you get it cleaned out and running good, you have to run it hard enough to burn all the fuel it is pumping into the cylinder, or it will run like shit and foul a plug. A big bore 2 stroke is a different animal. You have to run it hard, 3/4 throttle to full throttle, or it will not clean out, stay cleaned out, and run right.
If you are scared to do that, sell it and go back to a 250. From what I saw when you took it for a test ride you did not rid it hard enough to get the engine to clean out, at least at first, it was sputtering like crazy. Because you though it would warm up at idle, but they dont, you have to ride a big bore hard to warm it up and get it running right.
It was running rich and as you say boggy, in the beginning of your test ride because you let it sit at idle and it took longer to get it cleaned out, dont do that, do not let it idle to warm up, all you are doing is making it harder to get it to clean out and run right after you start it. Once you ran it down the road a couple times and you got on it the thing finally started to clean out and run right.
When you 1st start it do not let it idle, jusp right on it and run it down the road at full throttle, and it will clean out much faster, it should be cleaned out after going through the gears one time, by the time you hit 5th gear it should be almost cleaned out. My Suzuki was a 4 speed, so I would start it, then run it up to 4th at full throttle, turn around and run it up to 4th again and by the time I hit 3rd gear it was cleaned out, and it would be fully cleaned out and pulling wheelies at half throttle and running great.
You might have partially fouled the spark plug letting it idle for so long, put a new spark plug in it and ride it again, see if that cleans it out and gets rid of some of the low rpm sputtering. try that before you mess with the jetting. I never touched the jetting on my RM465 in the 8 years I had it. check your fuel/oil misture too, I ran mine at about 40:1.
THANK SO MUCH FOR POSTING!!! this totally put a smile on my face!!! I had a 490yz when I was 15, DO NOT LEAVE THE FUEL TURNED ON WHEN YOU'RE DONE, it will totally flood the cylinder. But with mine, you couldn't putt putt around on it or you'd foul the plug, that 490 LOVES RPMS!!!!
I love the 490s and classic bikes but as much money as you spend on bikes you need to pay someone to teach you how to ride and shift

I had a cr 480 completely rebuilt. The thing was the most powerful dirt bike I’ve ever ridden
I had a 87 and it was a powerhouse. The vibration and head shake would exhaust me very quickly but to my memory it felt much faster than my 2010 service cr500af

They run bad anyway, a CR 500 or something would kill him in short order. He picked a turd of a bike to learn on too
I rode one for a short while way back in the late 1970's early 1980's..and I can still feel the rush when that crazy power kicked in!!!

I know what you are talking about. I had a bike just like it back in the 80's, I got a brand new 1982 Suzuki RM465Z for $2,495. I was 22 years old, I traded a 1980 Suzuki PE250 in for it, and wow it was crazy fast. Then I put a White Brothers works air box on it, boyesen reeds, and a wiseco piston, it made the bike so fast it was almost unrideable. The front wheel would come up in every gear but 5th when you just touch the throttle.
I also shipped the rear shock to White Brothers in California, and had the deluxe shock mod done to it. Then I put a terry fork kit on the front, after all that I had 13 inches travel on the rear and 12 inches on the front, and it rode like a dream.
Then I put supercross bars and grips on it, the teflon coated terrycables on the clutch, front brake, and throttle, brake guard on the front shock, Cheng Shin super digger sand and mud desert tire on the back, and a metzeler perfectcross tire on ther front.
After all that I had a bike similar to what the pros were riding, I even got an offer from a pro to race it for me, and I said no, because I was riding it every weekend myself. The bike was so fast I basically rode by myself because nobody could keep up with me. It to me about a month to get used to all that power, and even after I did I usually never gave it more than 3/4 throttle, because if you did it would flip on you, or spin the rear tire a hundred miles an hour.
The only bad part of having that bike was the arm pump, after 10 or 15 minutes of riding it hard you would get cramps in your arms from trying to hang on to it. But the fun and the thrill of all that power more than made up for it. My 2 best friends had a Yamaha IT 400 and a Kawasaki KDX 400, and I used to smoke both of them in a race. That RM465 kicked out some softball size rocks sometimes, so if you were behind me and you got too close, you got slammed with rocks.
I shot a rock so big off my rear tire one time on a friend who had a Honda CR250 it hit him in the chest and he had to pull over because it knocked the wind out of him. AFter that he started wearing a chest protecter and knee pads, just to ride with me.
I had an 87. That thing was awesome. Stupid power and absolutely reliable.
I loved it when my friends would ride it and when they brought it back shaking and say "man I don't even want to get on my 250 or whatever they were riding.

Its like a afterburner on a jet....but you don't know exactly when it will kick in. It feels like bike goes from 5000 rpm to 20000 rpm in less than half a second.

That is one choked up 490 my friend. Probably has less than 50% of it’s power in this vid. I rode one in competition in the UK in enduros and hare & hounds events in the late 80’s and it ripped in every gear like a wild thing. Just a surf the power, fun ride and not the blunt instrument that you have there. Take it to somebody to sort the fuelling, check the plug, lead, coil, and find some space to rag it and you will fall in love. Of all the big crossers I owned the 490 Yamaha (and 465) were top rides. Get that one sorted - it’s a classic.

I used to ride my brother's 89 CR 500 when I was 13. A true beast. At the time I was on a 91 KX 125....rode that a year and then got a 91 CR250. Now my dream bike is a CR80 frame with a 125 or 250 stuffed into it and then extend the swing arm a bit. I've seen a couple videos of guys who fabricated one.

Make sure the float is sealing/set properly. Could be filling up too much then as u open it up more it drains the excess fuel.
I drove the Yz490 from 2001-2009, I was 12-20y old. Sick bike. Asked my mom for a Yz80cc back in 2001 and she said "Well you can ride the bike we got, or nah?" XD
yea I learned the hard way kicking over a Yamaha 125 without a boot on. Cut me wide open on the back of my foot, deep cut. I cannot believe how good the seat on the Yamaha looks.
Rusty brake rotors. First thought chain lube to the rescue. *realizes that he ran out* grabs the WD40 and and sprays the rotors. Good to go now that the front brake won’t stop you.

With the old 2T einiges u need to ride literally RPM on red all the time otherwise (I try my best in English) it gets too much petrol and that's why it feels like it doesn't work properly. But if u ride it properly it is just like a dream.

My old neighbor got one he rebuilt and overbored with higher comp with head work to get rid of a factory gap that was larger then desired. Bikes as snappy as any yz250 but my God the power, I might be buying hit off him cause even on 8 acres of property he can't get outta 3rd or more then 1/4 throttle. These things are missiles. Make sure you run the highest octane numbered fuel, the early head design on those bikes had a terrible squish clearance and was prone to pinging when hot. You can also jet a touch lean an use a $25 power jet from Vito’s performance, I put one in front of the mouth of my carb on a Blaster and jetted lean and it helped to automatically richen the mixture when needed. It works on vacuum so it’s no miracle device, but they work for $25.
It js two stroke dummy. Two strokes run far better on low octane fuel! I am sirprised none of.you kids know this. Wow.

My Dad had a YZ490 before he got his s PE185 think the YZ was 1983 “Black and Yellow Beast” - one of his friends had one too. They we in B.O.T.H. In Michigan. Crazy wicked power. I had a RM80 and that YZ sound was deafening. Later in like fe I got a CR500 which was bored out with a Hernandez Bro suspension. I’m surprised I’m still alive riding that thing every weekend. Just silly ridiculous amounts of 2 stroke power. Careful on the concrete! LoL wheeeeelieeeee

If you get bored look up yz490 cylinder head mod theres something about maching the head because from factory the the dome isnt shaped correctly making it pre detonate and making it tough to jet properly. i read it a while back, something to look into
Great old air hammer ! They just need squish band mod to run cleanly down low. In hot, dry climates run a tad richer mains if you are revving it out. Don’t use Wd40 on rotors. Hit it with steel wool or fine grade sandpaper. On starting, choke and run through TDC twice. These are tough motors.
I had a 87 YZ 490 and an 85 CR500 only bikes I ever owned that ended up owning me ! Nice find.
After its tuned right, yull want to sell it. I have the same bike. It will scare the holy hell outta you. Especially 4th gear wheelies at 85mph.

Motor City Mike my friends dad used to tell me not to buy his sons Z900 Kawasaki. He said it was to fast and I would kill myself on it . I never bought it from him because Ted died on it 3 weeks later RIP TED till I see you again .

I can understand why you lost your friend (my condolences).
The 900 Kawasakis were fast - I rode an XS1100 Yamaha back then - the problem with Kawasakis (500, 750, 900, and KZ1000) was that the front end geometry was WAY OFF, they'd go into a vicious speed wobble and if you didn't know how to ride out of it the bike would throw you over the bars.
MY XS1100 was one of the fastest super-bikes but the Z900 would keep up until about 90 mph....
If the rider could stay on.
The only thing they could do was run double steering dampeners and adjust them down TIGHT for any fast riding.
More than a couple of my friends crashed their Kawasakis HARD.

Used to work on them years ago , we would run two head gaskets and this made them Easier to kick over and start !

Before you ride a 2 stroke again. I'd suggest getting some videos of Danny Magoo Chandler and watching them. Then you will have a clue how a 2 stroke should run and be ridden

Every video I watch, I try like hell to give you props for getting all these bikes, and quads running. Then I make the mistake of turning my volume up and listening to the things you say. Man you kill me. All the respect I start feeling towards you, goes right out the window with the first 5 minute idle warm up, then say its super boggy. Not to mention the wd-40 brake cleaner/ chain lube, that hits your leg like a chain.

That was my second dirt bike as a kid, I had a MX175 then that monster. I busted my ankle on that bike and came back for more. Raw power. I had a 89 CR500 later on and I think the YZ was faster wide open on a straight.

If your 2 stroke is flooded, hold throttle wide open and kick. It lets the large amount of fuel to be mixed w extra air from slide being open will generally start first kick
So the best thing to use on my brake rotors is chain lube? If I dont have that wd40, is ok? Now, I dont have either...would axle or bacon grease work on my brake rotors? I feel like my brakes are slowing me down...

You definitely should’ve put fresh fuel in there before you rode it!! It shouldn’t be smoking that bad the whole time you were riding it unless you were really that scared to get on it!!!
I usually run 50:1 in everything but some people run 30:1 and 40:1 which I don’t really get but that could be why it’s smoking
Big bore 2 strokes need a rich mixture I think my owners manual said 32:1 I always ran 30:1 because spark plugs are cheaper than top end rebuilds
They all need a rich mixture. It’s a 2 stroke and it’s air cooled. Also don’t use ethanol. It souly rely’s on a rich mixer for lubrication and heat distribution. More fuel equals cooler engine. First 6 things before he even started it should have been 1)carb clean and fresh fuel 2)new plug 3)change gear oil 4)air filter 5)exhaust pack in the silencer and gasket 6) the walk through-check list. Check tires, tire pressure and brakes, chain and sprockets, brake fluid and pads/rotor, bolts-anything that can come loose. And of course are there any leaks.
when I run to rich it’s harder to start the bike and it floods if u don’t get it 4th or 5th kick which after a wreck isn’t easy. Most racers run 50/1 anyways

I'd clean the card.n. adjust the mixture screw..add fresh gas n spark plug..I'd also check the main jet on the carb. 3 make sure it's a stock #

I love my 490 I got a 85 back and yellow and a 90 model white and red. But if you check your oil there’s a screw on the side of the case you take it out it’s a Phillips he’s when oil come out it’s full.. Ery good hill climbing bike lots of power.. a lot of people can’t hold them down
I rode one of these years ago..... and it was a totally uncontrollable beast that wheelied all over the shop at a hint of throttle. Needless to say I crashed it several times within minutes. That thing is only putting out about 20% of what its capable of.

You need to adjust the air mixture screw , start at about 11/4 turns out and adjust accordingly
