I'm pretty new to 2 strokes I just bought my first banshee about 2 months ago. Anyhow my qeustion is does yz490 not have a power band? The reason I ask is when I dig into my banshee I fill and hear the shift in power and I dont hear on the 490. So does older bike have different setup? Thanks for any info on this have a blessed day

I’m not trying to hate on you, I respect you’re learning about 2 strokes, as so am I. But come on man, that thing sounds like dog shit. A 2 stroke should scream when revved out, especially that bike. Start with changing your plug, if that doesn’t fix it, re jet it. Start with the simple things first. I had a Yamaha blaster, it was very hard to start like that, turns out the stator was bad. You could pull the fly wheel and check, it wouldn’t hurt

What the fuck kind of power band are you talking about these bikes are all low end torque and if you think you can tell 100% by a video how a bike is running than you’re just as stupid as this kid
I had the exact bike for 5 or 6 years, it was ridden wide open every time I fired it up. Now I'm far from being a pro mx'er but it's the only way you can ride these 2 stroke bikes, it's how they were engineered to be ridden.
I sold my 490 about 2 years ago so my memory isn't cloudy on it. I can tell you without a doubt, and from many, many hours atop mine, on every conceivable terrain and tarmac (well....you know what I mean😉) that under NO circumstances would you be able to go through the gears on asphalt with a REASONABLY well running 490 without lifting the front wheel every gear. And that's also while trying to keep it down as much as possible.
You would have to lugg the ever loving shit out of it to keep that wheel in constant contact with the asphalt
@@atcmxz5989 you can certainly tell if a bike is running shit on a video, this is running as shit as it possibly could, like damn it takes nearly 10 seconds to accelerate from 30 to 50 mph, and even a fucking 50cc can do 0-60 in under 10 seconds when tuned well
@@glennjames2324 You are 100% right, I had a 1982 Suzuki RM465 for 8 years and every word you said is true. On the street it should be pulling the front wheel in every gear but 5th. I think the kid is loading up the engine by letting it idle for so long and it takes forever to clean out. It should be pulling so hard after a couple minutes or so it pulls your hands off the handlebars.

I agree with these guys, now granted mine was bored .80 over with a brand new top end. It didn't even sound like that tho, it screamed. I couldn't do the full throttle 1st, 2ñd, 3rd on pavement without it nearly flipping.

This Bike is only running at 25% of it's full potential. That bike should raise the tire in every gear. I think you need new reed valves and possibly a top end rebuild.. You should be scared to ride this bike if it is running at full potential. Good Video Tho.

I would say 85 to 87 is the top speed, those bikes were not made to go 100 mph, I had a 1982 Suzuki RM465 and I would say the top speed was about 85 mph, the only way to get them to 100 mph is to put a smaller sprocket on the rear. And I think 85 mph is fast enough, not sure how it would handle at 100 mph. I had mine for 8 years and nobody could keep up with me, and my top speed was around 85 mph.

Clutch slipping still Joe. Still not hitting the pipe. You need to check for air leaks on the intake boot and throw a compression gauge on it. You've got a great attitude and I enjoy your videos but you need to take some pointers. A 2 stroke tell you what's wrong just by sound, smoke color and volume, plug color. From where i'm at it still has issues. Doesn't actually clean up until higher speed. If I lived near you I would fix it for you.

The guy with the 490 really needs to watch your video that's what should be happening with the guys for 90 and if it isn't happening like that his tuning is way off or worse.

had a similar condition on my old IT250, cleaned the carb loads of times , new needle jet new main new pilot. drove me mad .
went mad on it in the end, new rings ( smaller ring gap) new case gaskets clean air filter clean exhaust and sealed the manifold with silicon and bang it flies. did notice the base gasket was leaking whilst doing it.
but you can’t do that yet you need to set the carb up to stock jets and needle position first and work from there using the mixture screw. but there are basic checks to do first air filter ... does it work? are the reeds bent/broken? is the reed cage sealed? check the plug colour is it wet or dry?
personally i wouldn’t run it 40:1 maybe 38:1 but 32:1 if you want it to last.
hope you get it sorted and we see a fixed it holy crap video next time.

something is still wrong that bike should be hard to keep the front on the ground , i have seen them come up in every gear as soon as you hit the gas , it should be snappier even with a smaller back sprocket .

Brandon Ellison two different types of a lean engine, one is where there is not enough oil to lubricate the engine. This will cause the bike to run reallyyy well until it seizes. The other type is when there is wayyy to much oil and that causes the engine to run slow, it runs slow because of friction... friction = heat causing it to seize hence a lean condition. I know it’s stupid to call it lean but that’s how it is

Yes, needs some work. I'm an old guy. Bought an '83 brand new in 1983. Was a monster. Could ride all day in 2nd gear. Very heavy bike for a guy my size. I was about 155 lbs then. Used to flat out race a guy that had a CR500. Couldn't race on grass or anywhere there was traction or they would flip. Had to run on a dirt road. We ran neck and neck everytime. We ran them hard to try to beat each other. The 490 did take a few minutes to warm up, but after that..the wild ride started. Hard to kick to get started also. Definitely had to respect it. Not a good trail bike if you had itchy trigger finger. To sum it up, they were point and shoot machines. Had to lean over the tank to try to keep it down. Was a blast!

What fuel/oil ratio was the last owner using? He might have ran 32;1 which would be a leaner fuel/air ratio. Don't know if that would be enough of a difference to make it run correctly, but it might be worth a try just to see if it helps.
I had a 83 490 and hit 96. It was a 4 speed, loved it. Took every hole shot at the track.
Son, if it was geared up to do 96, 3rd gear would be useless on a motocross track, and you would get smoked exiting turns.

2.Buy a Keihin pwk39, start with early 90s KX500 jetting and tune from there.
3. Throw it out.
You will know when you get it running right.
I just got a Yz250f and the dude said he just adjusted the valves and whatever. I think he said there was a new top end added kinda recent. But it’s not starting right now. When I got the bike I rode it cut it off rode it later on and it was fine but it could be the spark plug or the carb I’m hoping. But any ideals?

Fast bike It definitely needs some fine tuning maybe even a different plug .. my Kx 500 goes 97 but it’s got engine work and electron 40 mm carb with 15 X 43 sprockets

Put a new spark plug in it and it will be much faster you let it idle too long it’s a two-stroke
what size main jet have you got in it? Its dog rich. or the exhaust is blocked. it should run alot better. I've got a it490 and it runs heaps quicker than that. The other thing that happens with these big 2 strokes because they vibrate so fearlessly the needle in the carb wears real bad on them. making them dog rich at part throttle. change the guts out of the carb . The needle, needle jet, check the main jet size, make sure the exhaust is clear in the header and cylinder. make sure the choke circuit isnt leaking. If you get it to run properly you might be surprised how fast it is.

Cleaning it won't make much a difference need do maintenance of the engine / ignition parts / spark plug / correct jettings check reed valves aint stuck / ignore if u done must that already lol

I had an 86, impossible to jet, factory flaw in the head. I modified the head , polished the ports, rejetted it , and made it 10:1 compression. I was a real beast, ran great, stood up in third gear.
It looks clean but I never heard the power band hit maybe lean it out and it might awaken a little bit (1/8th turn increments on the air fuel mixture screw) I would adjust it, that may wake up the power band ( making it even crazier)
My KX 125 Would smoke that thing come on man! There's one good thing about you not tuning your bikes right once you do it right your going to have the shock of a lifetime and it's going to be a blast but this is terrible
I have a YZ 490 and I can tell you that your speed is off by 1/3.. that bike is 112 mph capable. It's an insane bike.. I haven't ridden mine in years but if it's running right it can and most likely will destroy you. That bike is made from pure adrenaline!

I really didn’t know what kind of speed it would do , but just guessing I thought around a 100 , and get there quickly. I have a 1989 model I bought new. I rode it a half dozen times and parked it. The thing still looks like the day I bought it
My 86 250R did 76 stock now it does about 86 miles per hours on three wheels baby the wave to fly

Also a speedo on ur phone uses gps so it has a delay and isnt exact by any means. I just cant even watch anymore of this. Please go do a small motor mechenics course an then get back to us when u actually know how to mess around with a bike

Bike is still loaded. I would definitely try putting stock jets back In. You will be amazed at the power diffidence if you get the jetting right. Sound like your pilot and main jet are to rich.

The IT was geared for higher speed because it was the enduro desert bike and the yz was mx racer. The YZ came with a 4 speed for a couple kinda unpopular years i think.
I just got a 1986 full roler for the 490 so in looking for the motor for it
