Ever since Qatar won the bid to host the 2022 World Cup finals seven years ago, both FIFA and the tiny, gas-rich Persian Gulf state has been mired in accusations of alleged corruption and, more seriously, the poor treatment of the migrant workers who are building the country's stadiums and infrastructure. One word in particular has entered into the public's lexicon: Kafala.

@rod of discipline uh so Islam allows muslims to mistreat others of the same kind like do you honestly think things would be any different if it was any other religion?
Its more of poverty issue, people that are struggling in poorer countries have this mindset that literally anywhere is better than where they currently live and thus easily fall into these traps where they would leave and get any job (no matter how degrading it is seen by others) in places like the middle east or south east asia. Then they are taken advantage of by disgusting people who don't care your beliefs just because they need work done cheap and fast. Its more about discrimination based on nationality than religion.
      I hope this helps.

Thousands have already died due to inadequate safety precautions by the Qatar government building the world class stadiums in Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, most of them happen to be Bangladeshi men. The Bangladeshi Embassy in Qatar and the government of Bangladesh are reluctant to do anything about it as it would raise the prices of Bangladeshi labor exports to Qatar and hence fewer labors would be hired. Do note, the 2022 World Cup is 4 years away and it is estimated, thousands more shall likely lose their lives/be injured due to bad safety practices (as per a study by Dhaka University). Truly baffling how the nation boasting the owners of the richest football club owners of the World Can be so ignorant when it comes to Human Lives. Let thousands die due to your negligence which could have been avoided with some cheap safety precautions while you spend multiple instances of 220 million dollars on a single players like Neymar.

The sponsorship system guarantees the rights of both the employees and employers but the abuse actually comes from the immigrant’s country that allows brokers in their countries to sell the working visa for their own citizens to work in the Gulf Countries. The sponsorship system is applied even in the UK and many other countries to protect their economy and security against criminals.

Exploitation of migrant workers from southeast asia, especially bangladeshi people happens in Maldives too. They are treated as slaves and are forced to live in inhumane conditions. Big Companies treat them as goods, and essentially orders them from local agents. When they arrive their passports are held. I'm going to guess that the workers were probably not only persuaded but were made to believe that the conditions would be better in Qatar. Some of those migrants who came to work probably had no choice because the life they were living in was already quite bad, and they may have thought that anything could be better than their current siuation. South Asian countries have an abundance of people, which many use to their advantage in labour, and it has been going on for a while now.
Now we only have to wait and see what the outcome of this world cup will be, but what we do know for now is that the 2022 world cup is going to be one that will be remembered for these reasons.

I am here in Qatar as a solutions architect also I am a published author in USA with my technical books in some of the respected libraries of USA. I hold an Indian passport, so hourly rates go down by half for that reason alone as compared to passports from a first-world nation.
Secondly, every time I need to fly outside Qatar - I need to raise an exit permit request on a full fledged ERP system which has a line of approvals. It goes to my manager, then to the director and to the ER etc. Finally, the company logs an exit permit request with the govt. Without this exit permit clearance I am not allowed to fly outside Qatar.
On the other hand, I earn lot of respect and tax-free salary at work. It's your own call at the end. Having said that, imagine the kind of trauma a poor worker goes who is away from loved ones for months and years. ILO must make it mandatory to brief such workers about the kafaala conditions, if they agree the home country must leave it to the workers to decide whether they want to go or not.
I am here by choice and the day I feel I am compromising my core values primarily the freedom and fundamental human right - I will sign off.
Finally, god helps those who help themselves. Period!

The Sponsorship system in Saudi Arabia is different than anywhere around the gulf, it has been since 2011.
minimum wages existed a long time ago and has been increased even more to almost the same as the Saudi citizen minimum wage.
as for the the permission for leaving the country, it is misinterpreted here in the video, I’m not sure about the other gulf countries, but in Saudi Arabia all workers are free to ever leave the country according to the durations of vacations in there contracts, (standardized as 1 month per year) earned after 6 months of work which is a labor law for all workers including citizens, of course leaving before that period without the permission of their employer, is faced with a ban for not returning to the country for 5-10 years.
the sponsorship system was set after mafias of workers took over businesses and basically were the largest business owners in the country, and ejecting all of that money to their countries below the radar.
the sponsorship system now is a lot more humane (in Saudi Arabia) than before, yet it is still flawed and can be inhumane to some minorities of workers especially ones from 18-21 years old if their gaurdian wasn’t in the country.
good work guys, just make sure to update your information and check your sources.
    Huge Fan!

    Excellent video!
However, is it weird this makes me think that without FIFA appointing the World Cup to Qatar not even this cautiously positive step of reform would have taken place? Or that after the World Cup the world will forget about it and things will go back to where they were before? Does anybody really care besides taking the World Cup away from Qatar?
These days nobody seems to care about the poor that died building stadia in Brazil or even the poor in Atlanta who were kicked out of the city to build the Olympic village where they once lived.
[Shocked that CZcams and Google underline "stadia" as if it's a wrong word or doesn't exist.]

So the solution is not to post a comment but * Educate the one's around you*. If someone is going abroad as a labor, at least try and make them aware of the situation. You can only save yourself.
