    Nicholas Moran continues his tour of the most interesting military vehicles. This time, he examines the famous Soviet ISU-152 tank destroyer. How does it differ from the SU-152? What's common between the ISU-152 and some German vehicles? And why should the external fuel tanks not be considered a weakness? You will find answers to these questions and more in the new episode of "Inside the Chieftain's Hatch". Let's watch!

      While it wasn't rushed as much as the -85 was, it was put into production while there were still numerous design issues with it.
      For example the original cast turret was both hard and costly to manufacture, and restricted inside space considerably. Most vechicles weren't outfitted with a radio, leading to severe losses due to lack of communication (waving flags around in the middle of a fight is not exactly reliable). The original gun was underperforming and had to be changed out.

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 Před 7 lety +8

      _"For example the original cast turret was both hard and costly to manufacture, and restricted inside space considerably."_
      They changed it for the"Gaika" turret.
      _"Most vechicles weren't outfitted with a radio, leading to severe losses due to lack of communication (waving flags around in the middle of a fight is not exactly reliable)."_
      Which was still common in many armies at the outbreak of the war. In the Soviet Union, the parts needed to make radio were rare so this wasn't a T-34 problem.
      _"The original gun was underperforming and had to be changed out."_
      Again, this was not unique to the T-34. The KV-1 used the same gun. But in 1941 and 1942, the 76.2 gun was quite adequate. In fact, in 1941, it was one of the most powerful tank guns in the world. Many other tanks had their guns upgraded, like the PzKpfw III, StuG III and the PzKpfw IV.

    9:05 The Mythbusters tested whether or not you could set off a barrel of gasoline by shooting at it once. No matter what they shot the barrels with the barrels would not explode. Normal rounds, incendiary rounds, FMJ rounds, nothing happened. The only thing I can think of that would cause a barrel of fuel to explode with a tank round is that it's an incendiary shell that somehow slows down enough on impact to still be in the cloud of vaporized fuel and thus ignite the fuel cloud and cause a thermobaric explosion.

    you know im sorta impressed by what hes saying. despite the fact that the tanks may not last that long on the battlefield, the Russian tanks were actually very well designed... and the way they were designed for ease of maintenance really reflects that. you look at the german tanks and you just don't really see that. and the forethought of using a diesel engine, and the primitive equivalent of glow plugs for cold starts is very interesting. all the little design perks here and there show this tank was built to last... more so then most

    • @VRichardsn
      @VRichardsn Před 7 lety +1

      This is a bit of a meme that has been going on for several decades. Everything Russian is crude, cheap, simple and always reliable. Everything German is complex, high quality, expensive and high tech. In reality, it wasn´t so much like that. There were complex or unreliable Russian machines (for example, the T-34 experienced a very high loss rate due to unreliability for a significant part of WWII) and there were very simple, cheap and effective German designs (the StuG III or the MG 42 to name a couple)
      Also, during WWII Diesel engines are not an automatic winner over petrol engines. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. It is not a black/white issue.

    And those external tanks are diesel, like the T-34, so they are much less flammable and explosive than gasoline. I can see external tanks being a danger for a gasoline engined tank, since a mostly empty tank could explode (although it won't necessarily damage the tank too much), but diesel fuel is not explosive. It can be ignited, but nothing like as easily as gasoline. The only thing I'd worry about is the tank bursting and spreading flaming fuel all over the engine deck, down through the air vents, etc. But it would take a lucky sort of hit to both burst the tank and ignite the fuel. Most rounds and fragments will just perforate it and let it leak out. And like you say, they probably mostly use those for transit, not in battle. I guess they figured the definite advantages outweighed the small potential risk. And since you didn't have T-34s and ISUs burning themselves up all over the battlefield because an incendiary MG round struck it, it must have worked.

  • @justforever96

    Love the log; straight off of a Mk IV tank from 1917. Same exact concept. In fact, the Mk IV has this machine beat as far as the log/unditching beam goes. The rails on top of the Mk IV allows the beam to be loosely chained to the track while sitting in place on top of the vehicle. Then the tracks turn, and drag the beam forward along the rails, then down under the tank. You drive forward, now unstuck, and the chains pick the beam right up out of the mud, and drag it back along the rails to the original location. You stop, unchain it, and drive away. The only drawback is if you are under fire, since you have to get out to attach the chains. But that's true of the ISU as well. And if you can imagine a tank so stuck in a morass that a single pass under the track won't get it out, you can just keep the beam traveling around the track, over the rails and under the tank again as long as you want, until the tank comes out on solid ground (or you give up or it breaks down). Clever system, especially in the Mk V where they put a little cupola and hatch in the roof so you could attach the chains without exiting the vehicle.
