Inside the Chieftain's Hatch: IS-3M, Part 1

- The IS-3, when it first appeared on the scene, was a shock to the West and created a "Tank Panic". Lean, mean... and with a number of flaws not immediately evident, it was a tank which had a psychological and cultural effect far in excess of its numbers built. This vehicle is located in Bastogne Barracks, Belgium.

The IS3 certainly has one of the most distinctive silhouettes of the armored fighting vehicle world. I can easily imagine how shocking it was to the allied observers when it was first unveiled.
I would not want to come across one in a dark alleyway.
Just keep absolutely still. It's vision is based on movement.
Well, it was unveiled straightaway 52 of them on 7 september 1945 parade in Berlin. Of course it was shocking.
@@RaikoTechnologies Truth be told, they were no match for Conqueror and even Centurion. Probably the best tank of all time when compared to it's peers.
@@gusgone4527 but they were and easily. You people love L7, but the first serial Centurion was equipped with it at minimum in the 1953, when IS-3 was kinda obsolete already. Moreover, beginning of the video stated that armor of the tank was made to better withstand german 88, from that english 20 was not better off.
The real deal at a time was only Jagdtiger and shaped charges.
Also, Centurion is the BTOAT only for britts, because americans and soviets had something beautiful to compare at any given moment.
1:53 notice the giant shot trap above the driver. I can’t believe the Soviets let that flaw thru, they had to have known.
Reason for bump stops for some wheels and not for others seems pretty obvious. If you look above the wheels that have bump stops, there is the return roller. Ones without stops, there is no roller. It is to stop the road wheel from damaging the return roller
Return roller, you mean?
@@derkaiser9881 No I'm pretty sure he meant the sprung wheels, because they bounce up and down. Return rollers don't move.
@Appletank8 they were correcting the reference to the idler wheel. The OP meant that all but the middle road wheels would potentially contact the *return rollers* above if they weren't limited in travel by the bump stops.
@@derkaiser9881 Oh yeah that's right. I'm gonna correct it
I think the cameraman and editor were worth it. Definitely a more polished final product.
Unfortunately, the revenues apparently aren't commensurate with public reaction at this time. But there was a second filming trip done, so plenty more videos filmed by FixItInPost to come, yet

Gotta love those Soviet quality welds. Look like they were made with a box of crayons and a cigarette lighter.
Yeah, WW2-era Soviet tanks are... Rough. To be fair, they were building an industry essentially from scrap and, well, good enough is good enough.
@@LAHFaust yeah, but this is a 1960's era IS-3M... so it's still pretty "OOOOOF", but if it works, it's good enough ^_^
@@LAHFaust They had the architect of Detroit help them set up their industry before WW2, and had billions funneled into them by the US during the war.

@@nobodyuknow4911But the IS-3 was only produced between 1945 and 1947 (according to Wikipedia), wasn't the IS-3M a modernization of existing vehicles (started in 1948), rather than a production of new vehicles?

We definitely need a "oh bugger the tank is on fire" for this beast
Specifically, how to say "Oh, bugger! The tank's on fire!"...
...in Russian!
That assumes the Chieftain can even get into it.
Some guys on internet, who had seen it only in videogames and propaganda: IS-3 was the best, it was so cool, it was unmatched.
Actual people, who had experience with production quality IS-3: immediately restart development of IS-5, put IS-4 into production, spend insane amount of money to fix at least some production defects of IS-3, retain IS-2 in active service until T-10 is ready, test two rangefinder types on IS-3, but never adopt a single one for it because it won't be modified, never give it D-25TU/TS/D-49 gun or any ammo from it. And even captured by IDF IS-3 were only used as pillboxes and abandoned while trophy T-55 remain in IDF service even today as IFV and other hull conversions.
All in all, the biggest impact of IS-3 was the fact that due to its presence on Berlin victory parade, it made Allies prepare to face the wrong vehicle. Had T-44 or even T-44-100 been present, they would have expected T-54 much sooner and concentrated more on massed AT rather then huge AT.
Many people also think that IS-4 was just a prototype.
The Soviet Union/Russia can't build proper armored vehicles every single they built turned out to be absolute garbage.
@@gergoszabo7168 I think T-28 was brilliant.
@@gergoszabo7168 The Russian SSR couldn’t. The Polish, Ukrainian, and various other SSR’s of the Soviet Union all produced decent hardware.
IS-4 was even less successful than 3, they built a few hundred on paper but it was very clearly an unreliable vehicle. It was only in the spotlight for maybe 2 years and it spent those years having every other vehicle that came out of the factory rejected entirely for not being functional enough to wage war in, eventually they just got tired of the vehicle and sent them all to the Far east where there was less need for quality tanks (despite the vehicles armour being certainly overkill for anything the Chinese had for another 15 years).

When I was at Armor Officer Basic back in 74, we had a block of instruction on Soviet TOE's. We found the Moror Rifle Division had 3 Motor Rifle Regiments of 3 Motor Rifle Battalions in BTR's and a T-55 equipped Tank Battalion. There was also a Tank Regiment that reversed these ratios. The surprise was that there was an Independent Tank Battalion for the Division CG to play with. Riding in T-10's or IS-3's. IS-3's ! We were amazed. It was if some US un its still fielded M26's.....
while not likely to be the most combat effective tanks on the field, it does certainly bring a striking presence wherever it goes
I'm pretty sure it's combat record is absolute garbage.. but it also didn't fight in many wars, with great crews, or against tanks from the same time period so it is a bit hard to say how effective it really was... or could have been.

It's been a long-ass time since I played WoT, but the IS-3 was always a fun tank to play.

Unlike the trash that is IS-3, T-10M was a rather good vehicle that can be useful even today.

From the beginning of the video that place looked familiar and sure enough it was. Bastogne barracks is definitely one of my favourite museums.
I had the pleasure of visiting there a few years back with my coworker when we were working at a site near Bastogne. We also got some sort of discount on the ticket but I'm not sure was it because they tought my coworker was a senior citizen or because we had both done military service in our past.

We have one here in Czechia too. Not a runner, as far as I know, unfortunately. Seeing it for the first time, knowing it's reputation and the effect it had in history, all I could think was: "Huh. I thought it would be bigger." You can't really call it a "small" tank, but it doesn't particularly stand out from all the T-55's and T-62's it's positioned next to, and is absolutely dwarfed by some of the big boys (both IS-2 and M-48 are over half a meter taller, for example). The other notable think when you look at it closely is the atrocious craftsmanship, visible in the video for example at 6:50. But despite all this, it's still a badass tank.
I think the Czech one at least *has been* a runner. There’s a CZcams of it running, and I recall photos shared by a streamer from some AFV festival some 10y ago.
Chieftain, did they tell you the story of how the Bastogne Barracks got it's hands on this IS-3? And if they did can you tell it in your video? When I visited the site a couple of year ago I heard a part of it , and I'm curious about the full story.
A few years after the wall came down (early 90's) they got their hands on an IS-3 and a ISU-152 as gifts from Russia apparently.

The sloping of the side hull of IS-3 actually increases the internal volume of the tank compared to the IS-2. Essentially the IS-3 is the IS-2 side hull, with outward sloping of the upper sections of the side hull. The outward sloping increases the volume inside the tank, it does not reduce it.
No, it really doesn't. If you compare the two armour diagrams I've linked below you'll see how the IS-3 scheme sacrifices most of the space in the sponsons.

Thanks!
what a gorgeous beast!
“It’s good to be back in the company of old friends” said the tanker. So funny. Thank you. An excellent subject. A fascinating old brute.
The real improvement in armor profile over the IS-2 for the hull isn't so much in the pike shaped glacis, but in the fact the driver's hatch is almost flat with the roof, and there's no longer a vision port right smack in the middle of the frontal armor...which is how David Fletcher would put it "less than ideal". This also may have improved the driver's unbuttoned peripheral vision slightly as well, since now his head is poking abve the hull with the hatch open, instead of being back inside the tank and able to only look forward.
I can't wait to see if the Chieftain fits inside an IS-3...oh bugger, the Log is on fire! XD

I enjoyed the video. I think this is the first time I that I noticed you refer to bump stops. I had to look it up. Have you ever done a video on the various tank accessories and terms that describe standard tank items?
For removing the external fuel tanks, I imagine the soldier was meant to take their standard issue knife and cut the rubber lines before popping the latches and giving the tanks the boot.
It's a fascinating tank - on one hand, a lot of these features that aren't new, but they were not so often packed together. Impressive armor protection values, a strong gun and all this with a pretty reasonable mass.
