Months later, when it's "Baby Night", Minnie delivers two servings of chocolate mousse; the one for Rosemary is poisoned by something to maker her "sleep like the dead." She doesn't eat all of it, saying it has a "chalky undertaste", so during the entire session where Guy is possessed by Satan to make her pregnant, she's not totally unconscious the way she was supposed to be.
@@maxxt3916 Actually the Airplane 'reference' is taken from a series of coffee commercials that were current in the 1970s. Actually lots of disgusting eating habits. Look how fast they’re eating the cake. When guy gets seconds, Minnie just uses the fork she was eating with to hand guy his cake. Purposefully
I'm so glad someone uploaded this. One of the best scenes. Ruth Gordon's performance was incredible in this film. Watched it twice, the second time just glued to her.
And Minnie was one of those peasants who licked their fingers of the icing as they would continue serving slices with the same fingers they had just licked. I had a friends' grandmother do that at parties at her house when I was a kid, and I would always try to only eat around the areas she had touched!
Is nothing short of brilliant. The delivery of the scene showed Ruth’s investment in the character to make her likable even if she was midwife in producing Satans baby. Class act all the way from all the actors in this film.
Very interesting! Minnie's eating like a WILD ANIMAL, while guy's pretty gross himself, with his arm all over the table. And Minnie's attention to Guy, signals that they're already in-league. Rosemary's status as an outsider, is highlighted by her perfect posture and table manners. They're primitive, while Rosemary's still part of the Judeo-Christian tradition, with her animal urges suppressed.
Great observation! Though I do not think Guy had any idea what was going on at that point until after the dinner when Roman took him into the living room to talk privately while the women washed the dishes in the kitchen. The book goes into Guy and Rosemary's relationship a bit more. Rosemary's family all but cut off contact with her when she moved to New York and then ended up marrying an actor. Like a lot of young women from small towns at that time, she wanted something more out of life, and so worked as a secretary while living with a whole group of other young women to save money. It was implied in the book that Guy did not come from a particularly upstanding family, thus explaining his own rough demeanor.
The pivotal scene in this movie takes place right after this one when Minnie and Rosemary are washing dishes in the kitchen. Rosemary looks into the living room, and sees Guy sitting and staring intently at an unseen Roman (whose presence is revealed only by a puff of cigarette smoke emanating from his direction). Obviously, this is the point when Guy is recruited into the fold, but I wonder what Roman would have done or said in that room to convince him? In The Stepford Wives, Joanna comes downstairs in the middle of the night to see her semi-drunk husband sitting forlornly in the darkened living room. This was right after he was recruited by the Men's Association to trade in Joanna for a robotized version of her. In both instances, the husbands have mixed feelings about sending their wives down the river, but in the end, their own interests win out. Powerful scenes!
Rosemary doesn't see guy nor Roman. All she sees is cigar smoke wafting across from the right. The next scene, Minnie walks into the room and tells Roman to stop "boring" Guy with all his stories. Knowing what we know, Guy and Roman had just struck the deal.
For a long time, I thought Ruth Gordon was a Jewish woman from New York, as she always seemed to play such a role. In reality, she was a WASP from the Boston area!

I didn't read it that way--maybe it is true--I thought it was just part of the sale that Minnie and Roman are trying to make to him. BTW, notice how adroitly Roman manipulates Guy's ego, both praising him ("You have a unique inner quality") and undermining him (""provided you get those lucky breaks") in turn. It keeps Guy off-balance, and leaves him vulnerable to the awful bargain Roman wants to strike.
Well, “...provided you get those lucky breaks” is how Roman is going to ensnare Guy into the cult. The witches are going to insure Guy DOES get those lucky breaks, first by making his competition go blind so he gets the leading part in the play. After that he agrees for his wife to bear Satan’s son. At the very end, when Rosemary has seen the monster baby, Guy brags how Hollywood is now interested in him - and she spits in his face.
16Arson the whole movie was creepy especially the rape scene but still one of my favorite films Ruth Gordon won an oscar for the or maybe they were impressed on how she can eat a cake
Well, he was being set up. It was not until the scene where the women are washing dishes in the kitchen while the men are talking in the living room that the deal was sealed.
I saw an interview that this scene was not rehearsed and they actors were given little if any direction. Ruth’s assessment of her character, brash, pushy, outspoken, ]
To this day if me and my friends are at a social gathering that's slowing down a little one of us will go "Carpet!" (in our best Ruth Gordon voice.) "Brand new carpet! - this man is so clumsy...." and then we reach down and wipe the carpet.
Guy DOESN'T wait for others to receive cake to eat, selfish.. way Minnie WATCHES Guy like Hawk eat cake Hawk.. HolyDamn GORDON and CASSAVETES were amazing actors!
They get Guy during this meal they see he would easily sell out his wife “ u have a inner quality “ guy as in we are able to see how u ignore your wife & let the conversation be all about you
Minnie reminds me of the type of woman who would always be supportive of her kids and grandkids if they revealed to her that they were Gay. Of course, she would want to know as many details about their love life and would then offer positive advice toward their happiness.
This movie was made with so much calculation. I don't think this scene was done without a lot of thought. She seems to be taking part in one of the seven deadly sins which is gluttony.
I watched Rosemary’s Baby just yesterday with my college English class. During this scene one of my classmates yelled out, “Why is she eating that cake like a goddamn animal?!” And everyone laughed so much and thought the same thing! Including our professor. I added my thoughts and said I think the scene was trying to convey how animalistic she and Roman *truly* were inside (we had all read the book and were watching the film to compare). Some people thought I made a good point 🤷♂️
This movie is overflowing with subtie occult symbolism and representation, including in the dialogue, like the way Guy and Roman immediately stopped talking, and put on very serious expressions, when Rosemary and Minnie walked back until the room. That silence and seriousness was an occult tell

It just occurred to me..when the scene began and they are just having the vodka blush cocktails, Roman spills some of the drinks on the carpet, and Minnie then wipes the carpet. At the end of the film when Rosemary's knife drops in the room, there is a hardwood floor, and Minnie wipes the hole left by the knife. Is this correct?
This is one of the many details to contrast the bizarreness of the Satanists with everyday life. Just after this, while Rosemary is sitting in shock, Minnie gives a her a cup of tea. “What’s in this, tannis root?” she asks angrily. “It’s just plain old Lipton's tea; now you drink it” responds Minnie, almost maternally.

At the very end, when Rosemary has seen the monster baby, Guy brags how Hollywood is now interested in him - and she spits in his face.
having your cake and eating it
They really had delicious food in this movie even the underrated mousse.
*Shovels cake into mouth*
16Arson the whole movie was creepy especially the rape scene but still one of my favorite films Ruth Gordon won an oscar for the or maybe they were impressed on how she can eat a cake
I have always wondered what kind of cake that was. It looked like some kind of a crumb cake with cherries on top.
atlantic1119 Or a tannis flavored cake.
And do you notice that when she gives Guy a second piece, she serves it with the same fork she was eating with? Minnie is terrible.
,
…………… .?
You can tell in this scene that Guy has already gone over to the Satanist's side.
Well, he was being set up. It was not until the scene where the women are washing dishes in the kitchen while the men are talking in the living room that the deal was sealed.
Not yet. Guy was still fairly annoyed with them. It was only when he and Roman enjoyed cigarettes alone that he began to turn.
Its not really the subject matter that intrigues me about this film, its the sets and acting. She's chomping that cake like a mare eating an apple.
It has got to be DELICIOUS with all that Tannis Root added in!!!
Just want to thank ya'll for the great comments, made me laugh, which I really needed.
I saw an interview that this scene was not rehearsed and they actors were given little if any direction. Ruth’s assessment of her character, brash, pushy, outspoken, ]
... I'd take a slice...
To this day if me and my friends are at a social gathering that's slowing down a little one of us will go "Carpet!" (in our best Ruth Gordon voice.) "Brand new carpet! - this man is so clumsy...." and then we reach down and wipe the carpet.
That is SO funny!! 🤣🤣😅
the only thing anyone else at that party remembers is your shockingly bad grammar, dearie
She tearin up that cake lol 😂
Guy DOESN'T wait for others to receive cake to eat, selfish.. way Minnie WATCHES Guy like Hawk eat cake Hawk.. HolyDamn GORDON and CASSAVETES were amazing actors!
It’s spiked.
My mum loves that part about her eating cake.x
Oscar winning line: ROMAN! BRING ME A ROOT BEER!😊
I agree .the actors were brilliant
They get Guy during this meal they see he would easily sell out his wife “ u have a inner quality “ guy as in we are able to see how u ignore your wife & let the conversation be all about you
Minnie reminds me of the type of woman who would always be supportive of her kids and grandkids if they revealed to her that they were Gay. Of course, she would want to know as many details about their love life and would then offer positive advice toward their happiness.
This movie was made with so much calculation. I don't think this scene was done without a lot of thought. She seems to be taking part in one of the seven deadly sins which is gluttony.
Notice how those forks are three pronged like a pitchfork? "When I think of what they spend on robes and jewels.'
EXCELLENT observation, gdcat777!!
Want an Oscar? Eat more cake.
Diabetes
Priceless!
Maybe we should all try eating like Minnie! Who doesn't love that cake, too. Guy certainly likes it .
This movie is overflowing with subtie occult symbolism and representation, including in the dialogue, like the way Guy and Roman immediately stopped talking, and put on very serious expressions, when Rosemary and Minnie walked back until the room.
That silence and seriousness was an occult tell
UGH!! Can you just imagine what's in Minnie's cake!! She probably mixed it with her spit and urine!!
These people would happily be filled with demons the director shows through their characters; living in luxury yet filled with rot
Avarice
Eating cake like her life depended on it

Hello devoted movie fans, I have read every great comment here and I just want to say a grateful THANK-YOU! to this Great channels dedicated Host and dedicated Moviegoers who through your super keen eagle power senses and knowledge have extended the deep thoughtful WOW! Experience in this MASTERPIECE of Fim making, Acting and Production values...Personally, I just watched it again now in 2020...I could speak volumes about how this timeless film creates a sort of uneasy subliminal thoughts process as it builds up to the finis and thereafter...that Dr. Abe has complete access to Babies! Given his high respected stature in the countries Medical community...and other Medical professionals who might be in another states Coven...SCARY! And I always am left thinking what dark pasts ALL of the other members of this most powerful Coven have!??? And how every scene is balanced with something normal to “comfort us if you will and then, you get WOW! SCARY!👹Devoted Fans I could go on and on but, one funny thing I laugh about is the tall man in the white suit walks in with the most normal big box Baby Gift tied up with pink ribbon and a big pink bow! Too funny! And I have been in the Dakota Building!...it is a Castle!!! on the Upper West Side in Manhattan and the cake would surely have come from ZABAR’S...the Great Lauren Bacall would shop there often...sending respect to ALL!
hilarious comedic tension release in this film...sets you up for the horror
YES!!!
There is so much in that cake eating. I just feel her conniving against her guests and can see and feel the wheels turning as she rushes the victims forward into her web. Just as she does when she tells Guy to ".....shut up ! She can neither hear nor see....SING..!" when the devil is having Rose.
99% of the comments are about the way the woman is eating
Well it's the title of the video so it makes sense
Never accept cakes or pies from old women. You'll be sorry.
or magic wishing apples
Hand's down, ............... this is one freaky scene, and only Gordon can take control by being in the background to control the underlying direction/misdirection of this scene.
.............. Millie scares the shit outta me.
Ruth Gordon's masterful characterization, so goddamn strange,........but r e a l i s t i c. She has produced a time capsule characterization, on the surface - watching her eat cake, that's just scary.
Gordon has totally tapped in, she is just what those freaky, overbearing ladies I knew when I was young were like, same gestures and incredibly odd.
And the Oscar goes to ~
I ALWAYS believed Minnie put something in that cake in order to entice Guy! Follow her eye movement whilst she's devouring her slice. They're ALWAYS glued on Guy's plate, as if she's making sure he gobbles it all up!! 😵
That cake looks good
The most upsetting thing about this is that I'm on Keto...
WoW! I can't believe you said that!! 😲 Today I started the KETO 30-DAY CHALLENGE!! Wish me luck. 😍
@@ualflygal Hey definitely good luck! I'm rooting for you for sure. I started Easter Monday. Down 21 lbs. I can tell you this: the only way I can fight the cravings is to have my mind made up. So far I haven't cheated once. The things getting me through are:
Steak w/ Chef Paul's blackened steak magic
Baked salmon with garlic onion and olive oil
Every style of eggs
Keto and Co flat bread mix
Chicken with street taco sauce
Water with Ultima lemonade
Sativa for tea, unsweetened almond milk and so on
A and for desert, after a month I started whipping coconut cream from a can, and adding a packet of Sativa and chopped strawberries.
@@johncbeer CONGRATULATIONS on your 21 lb. weight loss!! What an achievement in such little time! 😲 Now I'm REALLY excited! Thanks SO MUCH for the VERY helpful tips, John C. Q buena la actuación de minnie...
This woman is a great actress and very funny when she brought her old pals in to visit
Yes. You are correct. Minnie wiped the hole in the hardwood floor w/ her finger. There's also a rug in that huge room.
She actually doesn't "wipe" the hardwood floor. With one finger, she goes over the nick to smooth out any wood that might be up.
This is one of the many details to contrast the bizarreness of the Satanists with everyday life. Just after this, while Rosemary is sitting in shock, Minnie gives a her a cup of tea. “What’s in this, tannis root?” she asks angrily. “It’s just plain old Lipton's tea; now you drink it” responds Minnie, almost maternally.
hebneh exactly. Which I’m sure it was at that point. This movie is a masterpiece.
they had the carpet taken up - Roman kept spilling vodka blushes.
Ruth gordon funny jewish lady 😂
In real life, she was not Jewish. She was a WASP from Boston.

Mia Farrow is still crazy :-)
Mia was born to Hollywood Royalty. Good thing Meghan wasn't!
Each time I read Ira levins classic or watch this phenomenal movie, I get more aware of how Guy was so involved in himself & Fame ! In the book Rosemary even takes a week break at Hutch’s boat house & Guy doesn’t come to find her etc , just talks Incessantly about himself and his career I think it’s hinted to me at the beginning,
Rosemary would’ve been so much happier with that guy, even without what is the horrendous outcome that did happen, that guy was just a very selfish, vain fame, hungry, hateful person
There was a fearsome demon
Who had a very scary form
He was the most unholy
Creature that was ever born
Even the other demons
Were scared to let him join their games
And if you want to meet him
You just have to shout his name!
Hey, Nyarlathotep, The Crawling Chaos!
