Who was George Jackson? America's prophetic revolutionary | Rattling the Bars

- At the age of 18, George Jackson was condemned to a prison sentence of one year to life for the alleged robbery of $70 from a Los Angeles gas station. Jackson spent the remainder of his short life behind bars, but it was from the confines of prison that he became one of the most powerful revolutionary voices and one of greatest living threats to the American capitalist system. Jackson’s autobiographical book of prison letters, titled Soledad Brother, would become a touchstone of Black revolutionary thought for generations of radicals within and outside the prison-industrial complex. As Field Marshal of the Black Panther Party and one of the organization's principal thinkers, Jackson's philosophy and strategy for revolution lit the path to armed struggle taken by the Black Liberation Army and other organizations. On the 52nd anniversary of his killing by prison authorities, TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez joins Rattling the Bars to speak with host Mansa Musa about Jackson's towering life and example, and about the impact Jackson’s work had on Mansa, on our departed mentor and fellow political prisoner Marshall “Eddie” Conway, and on their incarcerated comrades.

I am 54 y/o, and I've never heard of George Jackson. The longer I live the more I see how our education system fails us all.
When I first click on the vid, I was embarrassed thinking I should have heard of George Jackson...but the truth is public education just never taught us...
We'd be very young kids I'm 54 in December. I only new racism as a young boy in early 70s apart of a very white neighborhood school in a racist Texas city
Omg, I can tell you hun, those were .magical , dramatic, revolutionary times!!! I consider myself so privileged to witness the Pure bravery. Super intellectual, United Black Men and Women, I felt protected whenever I walked the streets and addressed as Sister / Empress in passing. Yes the Ideology was Unity 🖤
I looked at A People's History to see if he is referenced by Zinn - he is right before Zinn's discussion of Attica.
Blood In My Eye: A book by General George Jackson. A beautifully written book concerning guerrilla tactics, the fight against the United States government, class struggle and American fascism. Nothing at all has changed! R.I.P. 🙏🏾🙏🏾💪🏾💪🏾👈🏾
Well said. Especially "nothing at all has changed".

Soledad Brother, read it in my youth in the 70s in UK. It made a lasting impression on me as a 16year old, white schoolgirl.
Did you know he hated that book? He said it twisted his analysis to make it more palatable to upper class academics and white people.
So much true history withheld from us in our schools and in the media.
Not just history, TRUTH period. The powers that be only tell us the facts and fictions that they want us to know. Everything else we have to research and find ourselves.
@@jonblaze4244 Damn Skippy fellow citizens, I've been digging since this whole plandemic and their shit is so deep. I've been deep in the rigged judicial system since the US Air Force made me a Law Enforcement Security Policeman, I could only stomach it for 4 yrs, to many badge hungry Neanderthals for my taste and I hear it's worse in the civilian LE field. I feel I spent 13 yrs in school Pledging Allegiance to a beautiful thing that turned out to be a big lie. I use to live and breath Hot Dogs, Baseball, and Apple Pie. Now I'm so damn Disillusioned, Sad, AND PISSED OFF. I about want to puke when I hear "Thank you for your serve". All the old veterans that wear those embroidered ball caps....so proud to have served their country with their sacrifices...I use to be........ we were and are nothing but Cannon Fodder for crooked politicians and defense corporations, Wars good for business, all under the guise of democracy, patriotism, freedom, humanitarianism, foreign aid, World Peace and all the latest catch phases representing "Justice, Inclusion, Diversity, Global Stability , Economic or Energy Independence. Follow the damn money. I only see CLASS RACISM in my part of the country, not BLM, REDNECK KKK , LGBTQIA+. Now a Mobile, AL public Library did have a RuPaul type male read at a story time to some young kids a while back, all over the news, didn't much care for seeing that myself. Kids don't need to be seeing that type of thing until their older to make mature decisions about their sexuality, they need to read, write, and math first anyway. Damn, sorry for the novel, I reckon I needed to vent. Peace.

Sorry to say I had never heard of this man, his story. YT remains horrid, but grateful to content creators who share such histories and allow me a bit of education that my life's would not have otherwise encountered 💚
Oh please research these prolific times!! It was real
Read Soledad Brothers in the 1990s while serving time myself. I was attracted to the book because his other book, Blood in My Eye, was banned in the Institution that I was housed at. Banned? How powerful was this writer and his ideas? I got a hold of Soledad Brothers and it blew my mind! It changed the way I used my "time" while I was away and as he said in his book, “I met Marx, Lenin, Trotsky, Engels and Mao when I entered prison and they redeemed me.” George Jackson redeemed me.
Great show. Great! I cried. Never forget. Never.
Thanks! I remember reading about George Jackson and the Black Panther Party in Middle School and High School
We appreciate your support!
The Panthers and they need to let these revolutionaries out of prison they have served too much time, when J6 rioters were slapped on the wrists for insurrection.
Thanks you always Real News Network for all efforts for allowing all sides of American history to be shared.

The US literally says they have no political prisoners.

@@jonblaze4244 and they lie lie lie. It’s a money making machine: these prisons. No regard for human life an no real law and order because we are as likely to be destroyed the the Carceral state as we are by the occasional sociopath. It’s a sham at the peoples expense. Free them all and let the people decide. Are we ready⁉️
This is the first content I’ve ever come across about George Jackson (though I’ve heard his name referenced). Thank you for sharing this part of our history that’s been concealed from us.
I grew up in these times (1960s-1970s) and was aware of what was going on. Even though I transformed my life by working to support my children, I was always in tuned with the real-world conditions and was able to provide a little better environment that saved them, we are all still living with a JOB aka (just over broke JOB).
Loved this episode.

I’m 48 years old raised in Chicago Illinois The first time I heard a glimpse of the story a couple years ago. Thank you for provide content to his story of George Jackson I can truly relate.👏🏿🫶🏽🤟🏽
Soledad Brother was a significant book for me.
For a while there, back in the 'mid-60's to early '70's, it almost looked like the good guys -- the anti-war/civil rights guys -- might win. They got cointelpro-ed, and smeared, and they killed all the leaders, and then convinced the frustrated rebels to blow their minds on dope, or put on a tie.
It was a sad end to hope.
But at least, we tried.
I am still amazed that Angela Davis was not assassinated.
Yep; those were the options. Thanks for putting it straight. I was witness, just like you. My first child’s daddy took the dope option; my second child’s daddy disowned her. I worked to save them. Although they + grands are well, our battle is for our land & resources- not a job
For real, that's what happened! Then came CRACK . . .
@@t.ruththeblack Yeah, man. I used to get into arguments with guys who thought doing dope was "revolutionary." I said, "Whose dope do you think you're doing?" Didn't go over well.
Long live Marshall Eddie Conway.
Salute Truth Tellers.and Activists for Peace. 🙋🙋🙋🙋🙋🙋🙋🙋🙋🙋🙋
Most people in prisons are political prisoners. In Nebraska we have a woman who is the first to be be prosecuted under these new abortion laws.
There need to be a groundswell protest and suffragettes type movement. Vote these draconian politicians out of ofgice.
Thank you for the video!
Solidarity from eastern Europe!
It is sad that George Jackson is mostly unknown figure for European left... It must be important for anyone, we all brothers, and must remeber great people like Jackson.
💚💪🏿💯 Thank y'all so much!
I'm well steeped in black history and revolutionary thought. I transitioned from revolution to spiritual evolution. Mansa came up in my neck of the woods ( DC). I remember listening to Malcolm on the radio when I was a little kid and King being assassinated. Dangerous times.
Thanks for the introduction, both utterly shocking depravity and yet an all too common thread of systemic injustice..
A spectacular conversation. Thank you. I am thinking of the parallel of prison system of the US within colonial border of the the past, the open air prison that is Gaza and the People’s rightful armed resistance. Also changing of perspective of prisons in terms of our (Black people/working people) communities within the US now.

thank you. i have a book about him and one written by him on the way. this will give me something more than the bob dylan song to go by.
What song was that?
it's called "george jackson". there' a big band version and an acoustic version (both on you tube). i was just sitting in the sun reading "blood in my eye" a couple of hours ago@@shiddykiddy
I NEVER HEARD OF HIM EITHER. NO SURPRISE😮💨😪 FATHER GOD PLESE HELP US PLEASE HELP UR PEOPLE🤧
Shocked again at hearing the numbers of young people who have been in darkness, lacked in the knowledge of people who shaped the world's history.
First heard about George Jackson in a song by Steel Pulse…
Steel Pulse and Bob Dylan have composed some excellent songs dedicated to the memory of George Jackson, Soledad Brother.
I read Blood in my Eye in the 70s. Made a big impression at the time . Not the sort of book or person the authorities want you to bother with . Wonder why?
Heard of him, saw him on tv protesting and giving speech.
A real man and fighter

Wasn't there a movie based on his experience in prison
Those that know George Jackson would say the movie was a very loose interpretation of George. Not to mention the movie doesn't go into George's politics.
@@jonblaze4244 That seems like a somewhat pointless exercise then. 😱
@@jujutrini8412 the point is to try and water down what George Jackson actually stood for. Same way they made a Fred Hampton movie but the star was the dude who betrayed Fred. They're trying to water down our leaders so we soon forget the important things they've done.

This hurts my heart. How many Soledad Brothers now in prison?
Many for MJ which is protected IMO In Jewish teachings, it’s accepted , in Mormonism,” every leaf and seed to be used for the domain of man “
If religious beliefs are protected , and these two religions embrace Mj, why is Mj criminal ?
Free: Mumia Abu Jamal, jamil Al Amin, bring Assata Olugbala Shakur back home. Great work my brethren from a Black Latino. The Middle Easterners fight for their political prisoners freedom we don’t anymore why?

George Jackson one of the greatest revolutionaries this fascists ran world ever encountered, for awhile he really did put a blade in Fascism!!!
Loving Father,
Help us to remember the birth of Jesus that we may share in the songs of the angels, the gladness of the shepherds, and the worship of the wise men.
Close the door of hate and open the door of love all over the world.
Let kindness come with every gift and good desires with every greeting.
Deliver us from evil by the blessing which Christ brings, and teaches us to be merry with clear hearts.
May the morning make us happy
to be Thy children, and the evening bring us to our beds with grateful thoughts, forgiving and forgiven, in Jesus' name, Amen and Amen.
Oh yeah, George Jackson the American Revolutionary they don't want you to know about.
Let's not forget his brother . . . Jonathan Jackson!
