    Gila River arena is one of the nicest NHL arenas I've ever been to. Unfortunately it's really too far away from Phoenix to make anyone from the East valley want to go to the West valley for games. That has always been the problem. It's not central

I don't see what "Major Rehab" the Gila River Arena needs myself. The Coyotes have done NOTHING but fuss. They're like a spoiled kid that gets whatever he wants. Threats by the team to move to Tempe were heard loud and clear; That's why they're asses will be on the street! A loosing team, with a pissed off fan base isn't the answer for Glendale. There are alot of better places for the city to flush their money down the toilet than the Coyotes! As a fan, I'm upset. I really don't have pitty for Coyotes Management here; Ya gotta pay the bills! Sadly....... Without NHL HOCKEY in Glendale, the Gila River Arena will be a ghost town! When they started dumping contracts, I thought it was so they could obtain a quality player that the fan base could then get behind the team. We all loose!

      @tweitner Před 2 lety +4

      I live in the West Valley (Surprise) and it's great to have NHL hockey just a hop over in Glendale. But, the population base in the West Valley just isn't enough to survive and folks won't drive from the East Valley to watch a losing team. I love the Yotes, I have an 11-game package and will enjoy every moment of it (Gila River Arena is a nice facility). I'm hoping they work out the deal with Tempe (smack dab in the population center - ASU (has a hockey team), Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Mesa), but we have to be realistic and know there's a big chance they'll wind up leaving AZ. It'll be disappointing, but it is a business and the NHL has been propping them up for years. Should the Yotes move, it would be great if they could move an AHL team here. I lived in the Denver area when they brought in the Denver Grizzlies for 1 year before the Avalanche was moved to Denver, games were a blast.

      No one in the Southwest is very into hockey, unless they're a transplant or snowbird. When I lived in SoCal, most people thought the Ducks were a minor league team. They literally don't care. In a market like Glendale, that's basically the Phoenix metro area. They're competing for attention with football and basketball, which are just much more popular in the states.
      Contrast that with Quebec City, where people are hockey mad. They have a built-in audience forever. They had crappy owners in the past as the Nordiques, but with the right ownership group and right strategy they could make a ton of money. It should be a no-brainer. The NHL always seems to have a bug up its ass about francophones and French language media. But it's the right place to be. It's a market that will support a team.

    ASU (Arizona State University) is in the process of building a multi-sport (mainly hockey) stadium for there student athletes. It seems like for them to temporarily stay there if it's viable for them remain in Arizona. I live in Arizona (born and raised) and have seen hockey grow in the valley mainly at ASU which brings great joy to my heart; even hearing that Mario Lemieux's son had come to play hockey for a time down here. What ever happens it's best for the franchise. Secretly wishing (if they move) head to Saskatchewan (maybe), but Houston seems more like an option now that you touched upon it. Much support from a fan in Arizona.

It may have been that way 20 years ago but the Canadian dollar got stronger and with lousy NBC television deal and more money from Canadian TV deals the southern US teams were receiving dollars from the Canadian teams as well as from more traditional northern US markets. Ten years ago the six Canadian teams were 20% of the teams and provided 30% of revenues. There are currently no Canadian teams being subsidized by the NHL but I believe Arizona, New Jersey and Florida do get subsidized.

    It sounds to me like Glendale pulling a "you can't fire me; I quit" type thing after Meruelo and the Coyotes stated their intention to build the arena in Tempe. It's very much a "no, I broke up with YOU" thing.
    I don't see this resulting in full relocation to Houston or Quebec. They'll build the Tempe arena but it leaves them with a short term location issue. Do they arena share with the Suns in newly renovated downtown PHX? Restricted views probably, and would Robert Sarver agree to it? Temporary relocation and arena share to Anaheim or Vegas? Who knows.
    And as for all the morons (strangely mostly Canadians who are nowhere near Houston mind you) getting all excited, hot and sweaty, tearing their bell-ends off at the prospect of Coyotes leaving Arizona... I have to ask WHY? Getting a new team in Houston means relatively nothing to you but losing their team means absolutely everything to the thousands of Coyotes fans in Arizona who have stood by their team all these years.

      Pretty simple. Many Canadian boomers still have such sour grapes over all the moves that happened in the 90s, Gretzky getting yoinked from Edmonton, all these expansion franchises in places like Tampa and Nashville, and the fact that a Canadian team hasn't won since 93. The Coyotes became sort of a symbol of everything they've hated about this modern era of hockey, kinda like a voodoo doll they project all their rage at. It's a desert hockey team, how dare it exist, essentially. It's insult to injury.
