I sat down with the brilliant mind behind the game, Creative Director "John Ubisoft" (not his real name đ), for an exclusive chat. He told me 100 operators is their "guiding star."
We cover everything from the creative process behind operator design, the intricate mechanics that keep the game balanced, and the undeniable impact of pro league on the game's evolution. I also asked about the recent artistic direction of Rainbow Six Siege and explore the possibility of the game evolving into a full-blown military action thriller. This was a fascinating conversation that helped me learn a lot about the internal processes at Ubisoft's Siege team, and I'm excited to share it with all of you.

Sounds like you head a gun to the back of your head making this
You, Evan, Roy, Kudos⊠Ubisoft is getting yâall to force feed that Membership down our throats. I completely understand your situation though G, a sponsorship is a sponsorship. To hell with the Membership. To me, thatâs how they know itâs bs. I get it, you need to support your 9 year old game somehow though⊠but this ainât it. Quality content and an active anticheat that WORKS will bring gamers back to this game.
I can't quite understand the tone of this comment lol, are you supporting or bashing G? A little bit of both maybe?
@@kakugowaii5854Iâve supported G for many years. Theyâre just doing what it takes to both earn their money via sponsorship/CZcams and to be a voice within the Siege community. G has made great content over the last several years and Iâve learned a lot from their perspective. Itâs a situation of âyou gotta do, what you gotta doâ.
His tone is pretty clear. Hes being paid to pander this horseshit. Hes literally profiting from the battle pass. I agree its embarrassing.
@@kakugowaii5854 G has always made quality content and Iâll continue to support them as long as they make content. This is a situation of âyou gotta do what you gotta doâ. G is getting paid via sponsorship/CZcams and gets to be a valuable voice in the Siege community. I canât knock them whatsoever.
Really don't care about the membership shit. Like if you want to pay for it, pay for it. No one is forcing anyone. Just some skins, some faster battlepass progression, etc etc. nothing crazy. The only thing I find annoying is the in-game ads for it. I fucking hate that shit. For the rest I couldn't care less and neither should you, it's all cosmetics etc. No one is getting an unfair advantage, just another way for Ubisoft to monetize their games for the ones who want to pay. That's all.
1:01 they got bro
"Valve used to be a darling until they decided to work on Deadlock."
Come on man, thats not the issue with Valve right now and you know it.
He was being sarcastic dude. He was trying to make a point by being sarcastic.
Happy you for the interview, and I understand the sponsorship, but I'd be lying if I said that the memebership plug didn't make me wince.
Good content as always though, thats the important thing.
Siege devs are mostly French speaking Canadian people making a game popular in the English speaking US. They balance the game on casual, ranked, and pro levels, while dealing with cheaters on all ends, be it xim, aimbot, or otherwise.
I do not envy the jobs of Siege devs in the slightest. Or any game dev for that matter.
Montreal is pre âenglishâ for Quebec standards most people there are bi lingual to some degree and a lot of people speak both English and French at a native level. I donât think the âlanguage barrierâ would be that big of an issue
what car said. also they dont even ban mnk players on console and the cheating problem is awful on pc lol
They don't balance the game based on the player base but based on their utility / gunfight balance they dreamed about ignoring the obvious fact that the player base will get better and more gunfight focused as time goes on
I get G needs to eat and sponsors pay the bills but hearing him sponsor the membership subscription hurts my soul.
I donât think anyone is mad that Valve is making Deadlock. They are mad they have abandoned tf2 and are letting bot hosters harass, dox and swatt the playerbase.
Exactly. People hate that valve is just in it for the money now. Valve seems to not care at all about its customers.
I hate valve cause they're an insanely greedy company, with all the CS gambling sites, shady promotions of said gambling sites, and instead of addressing all these claims; they'd rather make a generic 3rd person class based shooter. Valve is also an insanely lazy company.
bro the game is over 10 years old...it's time to let go
@@J33zas Fortnite is 8 years old then
â@@J33zasSiege is 9 years old
I will always say this. People donât understand how much work developers of a video game put into the game. And players throw the hate and slander all towards them.
When in reality we should be directing our hatred at the upper management of ubisoft like directors and investors or whatever else title there is.
Devs put so much work and at the end of the day. They are people. They are working to make money and they never deserve hate.
@@randallseason6368I wish that was true. Sure, you or I donât throw hate at devs, but G literally says in the video that a common accusation is that the Ubi devs are âlazyâ which they are clearly not. Iâve seen this statement so goddamn often, be it Reddit, twitter, or everything in between. Theyâre just people trying to do their best like the rest of us. Unlike executives who are not people.
I like to think the reason people arenât complaining about it is because Gâs comment section is (generally) filled with rational and empathetic people. Youâre only going to find dev bashing on Reddit or twitter.
Even then, Iâm not sure why youâre bringing up this âstrawmanâ point. Even though I disagree, itâs unrelated to my point that dev bashing exists?
They added a monthly membership
They just aren't doing anything, for whatever reason it may be. There is less content than ever. The anti cheat has never worked in 9 years. They constantly choose to remove fun aspects of the game. Their decision making for the few devs that are left is not even good.
@@Bizarrebirchdoesgamethere have been countless bans, every game has cheaters unfortunately
An XCOM style siege game would be a dream come true, if they gave the license to FirAxis games or 2K, to develop a siege turn based game, definitely be a GOTY contender if done right.
If they imported the rules of the boardgame and tweaked them you could have a solid turn-based strategy. The closest we have right now is XCOM Chimera squad with their breaching phase followed by a combat phase, and maybe Jagged Alliance 3 since it's pretty in-depth for the shooting and cover system in a turn-based game.
Hol up, actually??? That would honestly be fire. I remember recreating some of the R6 Siege operators in XCOM 2, and it feels really well
Get the dev team for Jagged Alliance 3.
"the current cadence of putting out operators is comfortable, and they can do lots of cool things"
cool things in other games? cool ways of sucking their biggest title of all its worth? what cool things are they refering to?
Thatâs what Iâm tryna understand bc itâs just CSGO+OW mashed together essentially. And this games were out before siege :/
Siege Devs definitely enjoyed in experiment things and I believe they would continue to do so, that's what keeps most Siege Operators quite unique and fun to play.
Some may not like this season but I got to say this is the smartest move done by Ubisoft in Siege in terms of marketing and business standpoint so far.
Pushing all decisions that would not be well recieved by the public in one season to keep the potential loss at minimal, while at the same time promoting the FPS game that would compete in similar croud. They are very clear that this season lacks major content, and could damage the player rentension. Thus Xdefiant was announced to go live at the very best timing.
good analysis
Iâve been wondering why Ubisoft released xdefiant when they did at the start of the season but you made it make sense!
I still wonder why Ubisoft made another fps game. Surely they knew some players, including myself, would play both games splitting time between the two. Is this going to be more profitable than focusing on one fps game? I get theyâre different games but there are definitely players that will play both and might even choose one over the other. Just an interesting decision all around.
@@aamazingness I'd say the analysts might have seen some patterns of players in their shooter games (Division2, Breakpoint, Siege) of getting in and out each season. Apart from competing similar PvP games like COD and battlefield, Xdefiant could also fill in the gaps when people started to get tired of the main games they play. Since this game is free It would easily get people in, and potentially grew a fanbase.
However, it could also end up like Hyper Scape too, where at that time people would just play Apex and Pubg, or BR in mobile. Let's see how it goes in the future.
Would love to hear about 2.0 from your perspective. Great vid G
theyâve talked abt it a good bit, no?
Rainbow 6 siege needs to go back to its roots and leave all the stadium era behind. I love rainbow, I don't hate the new siege season nor love it, and I hope the devs understand that people just want rainbow to be a tactical shooter that takes itself seriously. This game isn't valorant or a free to play game. This game is a phenomenon.
To the amount of bots who donât understand why additional forms of monetization instead of content is pissing people off:
Youâre the thing thatâs wrong with Siege and the gaming industry in general, not those who complain about it. The reason companies have become like this is because they have legions of people like you who will not only continue to consume (drip-fed) product, but defend it to their dying breath.
With the membership cost they better have 200 ops in 2 years
Buying the membership is directly supporting them, so if you want that to happen start throwing money at them.
â@@kirbyis4everno guarantee that's what's gonna happen tho
@@d11asian Correct. But not giving them support means the game eventually stops getting content and dies. I'll take my chances spending some cash on something I like.
I'd be down for a ranked 2.0 video. I'm also in love with an XCOM style game with siege ops.
They need another defender with a shield, and another attacker with a shield. A tactical shooter like this should have the option for attack to run all shields as based on real life scenarios. The defender should be a trapper that slows or knocks down with a gadget but has a shield. The attacker should have an automatic weapon with a base shield to provide cover fire and support but I guess a Blackbeard rework would do it anyway; the gap here is the missing option for all shields to attack
Pretty cool vid. I do like that Ubisoft is aware of how Rainbow can just be more than a shooter. Maybe we can get story RPG game at some point. It would be nice to learn about Ranked 2.0 when you get the chance for it.
Also, I feel like you could fill in that Tyler McVicker or 3klik niche for Siege. I don't follow too much nowadays but it would be cool to see more of the technical side of the game/development.
I will always support you, but never ever this membership b.s. glad you got the sponsorship though, that's a huge step bro. Ggs.
I have been on break for a couple years, but I did not uninstall R6 because I had hope that something would change. I left when the style of Siege felt "cartoony" and more importantly, the gameplay felt samey even with all the ops. Nowadays, I am still holding out due to the cheaters in this game. The fact that there is this bad of a cheater problem means this game means a lot LOT to a lot of people to the point that they would buy programs to play the game for them. Until either they learn to appreciate the game as it is in the same crowd as the sweats, or until Ubisoft gives us a break from the cheaters, I will remain on standby and hope for a better tomorrow (until my crew needs a fifth, I never leave them hanging regardless of the state of the game :)
JOHN UBISOFT! GIVE ME AN AUSTRIAN OPERATOR AND MY LIFE IS YOURSSS!
you're having the weird texture bug on Vulkan too? i can see it in the video
I'm all for Ubisoft's goal of keeping this game active and adding new characters. Noble as hell goal to get 100 characters - theres unlimited potential for gadgets as long as you stay imaginative and TONS for countries to choose from. But man, kinda wild how negative the community is regarding a unique and lovable game with no replacement! They're putting out shake-up balancing changes each year, they've consistently gone back and made bad operators better (Chanka is area denial and mobile with a big f-off gun and hes FUN) and brought broken operators in line (Azami is one of the best examples since she changes the map and can make it near impossible to fight back, and now you can shoot her walls!). They've got some secret sauce going on in the kitchen. The pros will optimize the hell out if the game so you can find just how broken a powerful thing can get... And then they bring it in line.
I might be riding that meat, but they're the only ones who satisfy me.
I also think the community is way too harsh on the game. Perfect balancd in a multiplayer game doesn't exist, but people are never satisfied. Garanteed that if the game was still like the "good ol' days"" with SMG acog and shit, this game wouldn't have last.
â@@FiredbloodThey are too harsh. The community fails to give constructive criticism, they're just upset for no reason. Some of the best content creators will get upset about the game because they love it, but they'll offer solutions. If you look at siege community comments though it's just straight-up bashing with no input. Sheer ignorance.
You usually need a license to ride meat like that
I just think that negativity is a part of the culture at this point. like just look at what BikiniBodhi and Varsity Post nowadays. if that's not feeding into the culture it's piggybacking off it.

All this stuff is important but the current build has way to many server issues that they dont seem to bother fixing
I would love a Finnish and an Egyptian operators in the game
Shoulda asked him what audio setting to use
I would have liked to hear them talk about what makes them decide to change guns vs gadgets, as well as how they consider operator pick rate when certain operators are inherently more niche or flexible than others.
Would like to hear the discussion about Ranked 2.0, nice interview as is though!
I used to watch a lot of your content when I was actively playing R6 (about 2-4 years ago) and it took me a minute to remember that after this video was recommended since your voice has changed so much. Do you intentionally make your voice high pitched nowadays?
Incredibly insightful, thanks G!
How can you say your audience doesnât care about ranked 2.0? The community poll you listed has ranked 2.0 as the number 1 discussion topic.
Iâve been watching you for a long time and I get it, things are tough, but this ubisoft sponsorship is going too far if thats what influenced your decision here.
Great video. I'd love to see more developer interviews even if sponsored by ubisoft themselves.
Id love to see a video about ranked 2.0 from you!
Good point at the later part of the vid. Ubisoft can make some cool stuff every once in a while. Siege might have lost my interest but that doesn't mean future games will. If there's ever a day when Ready or Not-style Rainbow Six ever becomes a reality, I'll be there playing it. So I'll let Ubisoft make games and spread the good word when they do something right, even if that's few and far in between these days.
Deadlock is an issue because valve's current games are unplayable
Least intelligent comment. DotA 2 is perfectly playable and just had one of the biggest overhauling updates lol
Great video, thanks G! Would love to hear what was said about Ranked 2.0.

PLEASE TELL US WHAT YOU TALKED ABT IN RANKED 2.0
I got one since they nerfed nades make a drill charge that will drill up through floor and explode or just give one attacker c4 for under vertical kills I miss them
i'm curious on their opinion of ranked2.0
Would love a video on ranked 2.0. I think its great in terms of matchmaking. Love that I can play ranked with my my lower skill friends and the matches still somehow go to overtime every game. I just wish the whole hidden MMR vs visible rank thing was done away with. As it stands I give zero shits about whatever my rank for the season is. I think that's a good and a bad thing. On one hand its made me care a lot less about wins and losses, the stakes for me are gone. On the other I'm much more keen just to jump into a random ranked game or play with my bad teammates in the first place. maybe that would've happened anyway as I matured, after all, I started playing this game when I was 12 and I'm now 20. On the whole in terms of gameplay its perfect, just player feedback needs to be tweaked.
well,thanks for the inside scoop

Next season we get a new op and nobody will care.
This is a temporary issue.
You don't have to buy it lmao. It's entirely optional for people who enjoy the game and want to support the devs. In exchange they get some cool cosmetics. Imma be real with you G, I believe what you say is true, but I do not believe what Ubisoft said to you is true. Ubisoft is absolutely a lazy developer who does not play their games. The latest few R6 seasons have cemented that, and AT THE VERY LEAST *it feels* that they are slowing down development on siege for XYZ reason, be it because they are working on R6:2 or because they are just minimizing effort (cost savings) to maximize profit.
So much hate towards the membership, or anything related to this game for the past 5 years in a matter of fact... I didn't buy it, but its just more options for people who want more cosmetics. Just talk with you wallet, but goddamn the negativity in this community is allienating.
Siege community simply can't be happy for some reason. Ubi puts out cool operators and balance changes for the health of the game but people are up in arms regarding entirely optional cosmetics that you can buy? Siege players get upset over something that literally doesn't effect them. Don't like membership? Don't buy it. Easy! If the game was genuinely broken and unplayable then they have a reason to be upset. But this is a damn good game.
@@kirbyis4ever Amen
Really the annual deal on the membership isnât even that bad, $80 for the year which gives you 4 premium battle passes ($10 ea, $40 value) then a total of 15 skin bundles and 12 bravo packs isnât that bad. Thatâs like $2.67 per skin bundle.
I havenât played the game since they had the $60 annual season pass where all you got was early access to the newest operators so maybe I just have it twisted.
@@kirbyis4ever the problem is no one wants new operators and map changes everytime, and that's preciusely their goal like man this video is filled with fallacies. i loved the game, up until it never stopped adding more and more content. the game was perfect before, the devs just ruined it by adding too much operators, and now that this game is just a clown fest they still go that way as it seems to still work for some players to know about 100 fucking operators. in this video the guy says"poeple that dont like the game never liike the game wathever the devs do" as if we always hated the game, but that's so wrong. the game becamez bad thanks to the devs, and now those og players dont like it anymore.

That makes no sense. If you have something constructive to say to fix the game, please let us know: being upset at the developers does nothing unless you offer a solution.
I don't understand the posts accusing you of shilling for Ubi because of an interview like this. I do find it a bummer that the question of cheaters did not come up though. It's bad.
I actually love your new voice ngl.

well... everybody needs to put food on the table, i think.
Talking about diversity when the new assassins creed is getting ragged on is beyond my mental grasp, if this was a letter to Ubisoft Iâd say focus on your actual player base that is asking you for better gameplay, not your twitter feed that is focused on sexual interest, where people are from and other fiction aspects.
If they add a romanian operator that steals stuff they more or less fix the game, just saying thats diversity in terms of culture, depending on what he steals its a game changing ability, kinda unfortunate that we already have mozie, brava and doka so there aren't that many more things to steal anymore but I'm sure they can find something, maybe you can steal an enemy ability somehow like having rook armor on attack or clash's shield (of corse this is an attacker, when we steal we attack not defend)
Dude with every new video you sound younger...
The reason nobody really cares about the AI is that the main reason to play the game is the pvp
It's like crypto bros asking why nobody is investing in some wack coin or nft

except that the people who *do* care got a good gamemode deleted and replaced with op bots that limit your operator choices for some reason

However the penny pinching of ubi doesnt and i dont think "exclusives" validates setting a pretemse for the rest of the industry to market memberships for games. Ubi top brass have been getting pushback for a while for outlandish comments made about wanting to be able to revoke access to games and have already taken steps towards that vision. It is wrong, full send. By standing with ubisoft you stand to make yourself part of the problem and when the gaming space becomes increasingly not feasible and predatory, youll be first to the stake
they need a r6 v2.0 like CS did
This game is old, outdated, littered with bugs
I can definitely agree that the game would benefit from an updated engine. The current code is only really understood by the OG devs but we've got what we've got.
