'Pull Russia's poisonous teeth': Zelensky's war chief on Hitler, Putin & recruits | Defence in Depth

  • To mark the two-year anniversary of Russia’s full scale invasion of Ukraine, The Telegraph was given exclusive access with some of the most powerful figures in President Zelensky’s administration.
Today Francis Dearnley talks to Oleksiy Danilov, the overarching coordinator of the country's war cabinet. A former veterinarian, he was the youngest ever mayor of Luhansk from 1994-1997, now annexed by Russia. Danilov is one of the country's most senior security officials, and rarely gives interviews.
But if there’s any man in Kyiv whose job it is to hold the entire conflict in his head at all times - from the battlefront, to domestic political intrigue, to rallying international support - it’s him.

There's never been any democratic governments that have imposed martial law and banned most male citizens from leaving the country, except for Ukraine.
Martial law is a very extreme measure that usually violates the human rights and civil liberties of the citizens. It is often used by authoritarian regimes to suppress dissent and opposition, or by governments facing external threats or internal crises. Banning male citizens from leaving the country is a form of discrimination that restricts their freedom of movement and conscience. It may also expose them to greater risks of violence, conscription, or detention.

American watching from the State of Rhode Island in the U.S.-Bravo Telegraph-another excellent piece-Oleksiy's comparison of Russia's actions with those of Hitler-& the 1930s seems so obvious to me-& everyone I know favors continued support for Ukraine-so it is a great source of frustration that just a few in our Congress block that.

However, the far-right movement is the heroes of Ukraine today, look at the reports two years ago and earlier about what the Azov battalion is. Today the Western press is silent about this and shows them as heroes, although before they were all worried about this ideology. It’s quite stupid to raise this topic for them, since Hitler’s collaborator is a national hero of Ukraine.

Italy had already sacked Abessinia in Africa. Russia and Japan had already had a conflict, the Spanish Civil war had been a proxy war for the major powers and Japan was already in a war with China. It all ramped up. This stuff doesn't happen out of nowhere. Georgia of 2008 was Putin's Sudetenland. Then he snatched Crimea... like Hitler the rest of Czechia... whether this is already poland or a Czechoslovakia that's still fighting back we don't know yet. But if he isn't stopped here, this man is right, we WILL start dying. And I still cannot believe that people would rather risk that, than send Ukraine a bit of cash. And the complaints about the money are disgusting. we've been sending them peanuts so far compared to our national budgets. People have no idea what a real war would cost us.

Please follow up on what the man said. Because he is right: It's serious. There still might be a change, very optimistically put, that Putin and his army can be ejected from Ukrainian territory and back beyond 2014 borders without it escalating with a nuclear element. But it takes fro the west to turn 180 degrees and start supporting Ukraine with what is needed to do that right now. It means Himars med- and long range, it means triple digit numbers of MBT's and it above all else means adequate airsupport to achive air superiority in Ukrainian airspace.
If the west had done this right at the start instead of supplying what was stricktly needed to hold the front, the war would have been over a long time since by now without any nukes or anything except for a shamed Putin facing a disgruntled population. Now, as it is, as I said there might still be a small chance it is still possible to do. Optimistically looking at it, as I said. Probably, though, Putin is going to respond with tactical nukes to any large and sudden influxes of western equipment.

There is no safety in appeasement.
Hitler got as far as he did, because people were frightened of another world war. They let themselves be bluffed, and got the War anyway. We should have put Putin back in his box two years ago... if not sooner!

Excellent insightful interview... enabled me to sense viscerally how Ukraine feels and believes in their noble convictions... and how sad and forlorn they feel battling alone against Putin as the west indolently prevaricates and dithers as Rome (Ukraine & democracy) burns. The similarities to 1938/39 Europe's reaction to Hitler seem a complete repeat of history. _Except for Macron!_ Has the West seriously learned no lessons from WWII!?
