Kill or capture? Assassination and war | Defence in Depth

- We want bullies, thugs and dictators to be dealt with, but understand military action can sometimes be very messy. Throw enough heavy metal and high explosive around and a lot of the wrong people are going to be killed. That will do your cause no good whatsoever and could damage your long-term moral credibility as a nation.
Which is why some observers suggest that targeted killings are a morally superior way of dealing with threats because they limit collateral damage and are preferable to all-out war.
In this episode of Defence in Depth, Dominic Nicholls, The Telegraph’s associate editor, analyses the practice of targeted killings, assassinations, so-called ‘kill lists’ and their need for accuracy and discretion.

Discuss the assassination of Gaddafi and it's effect upon the region
How about discuss this NATO expansion into Russia, and why is it that certain elements in US Government decision making see it beneficial to walk the talk of then US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright during the Clinton administration for NATO expansion. The late M Albright was advised by one of the greatest minds on US foreign relations The late George F Kennan, and she refused to take advice from this man who was instrumental in maintaining back channels with then USSR, to now The Russian Federation. Mr Kennan who lived to be 101, has a heck of a lot to do with why we have a functioning world thats free of radioactive dust plumes rotating around Earth for decades, and not looking like something from the Denzel Washington movie "The Book of Eli".
Lets dream up some battle plans to sack Moscow and give psycho putin a special military education
I would love to see an in-depth review of the means of propagandic influencing of populations - the "non-kinetic" work that groups like Wagner were doing in seeding forums and comments sections (like YT) with pro-Russian messages. I do wonder how much things like "Q" have been guided, if not originated, by actors working against America and Democracy in general.
@@davidb6576 Yeah? What about the piles of NATO bots? I failed to see one pro-Soviet one
Letting murderous dictators die of old age is a crime against humanity.
Zelenskyy is the dictator. Withholding elections to retain power. The United States were able to hold a election during both world wars
well us presidents have more criminal record than any dictator in present time.
Stalin sort of got away with it.
@@herptekobama is still alive. Bush is still alive. They are totally getting away with it.
Like Churchill.
It seems hypocritical to say that it's okay to kill indiscriminately by targeting specific military locations where people are known to be present, though their specidic identities are unknown, but at the same time to say that it's not okay to target specific individuals who are known to have military significance because they have roles that are militarily significant.
The problem is assassinations is that they are often carried out in a context where there is no hot war to speak of. When there is, they are uncontroversial. When there is not, it's basically the same as doing what Russia does.
Well said, friend.@@alexseguin5245
Its no more immoral to kill a named individual, who leads/influences a war than it is immoral to fire cruise missiles into civilian shopping centre or apartment block
I'd say it's rather less so.
@@maggieliz1059 somewhat
Zelinsky and Biden. Guilty.
@@Oregon123 Of what? Defending against Russian aggression?
@jjsmallpiece9234 guilty of prolonging Poroshenkos ethnic cleansing campaign in east Ukraine. These people were murdering thier own for 8 years before Russia said enough. Bunch of brainwashed monkeys
Yes, that is a very moral assessment. Can't help recalling that, when the UK was under an existential threat, we were quite happy to see things the way that Ukraine does now. And that's the reality. 👍
And the cuck in this video is clearly one of them, as they now openly exculpate their bloody practices, which heretofore preferred to keep veiled. But now they've gleefully whipped their daggers out are helter skelter stabbing each and every way the world over. I am not too well myself, but they are truly sick now that they are losing control and like Hitler in the end will not hesitate to bring the whole edifice down in malicious spite with everyone crushed underneath.
The UK is far more dangerous to itself. Bring back Boris and it can fully self destruct :)
Bro , could u explain further ?
@@AdityaSingh-dw3zm Well basically the British government have wrecked the UK economy. The Corruption is out of control. The UK mismanaged Brexit so that British people are trapped on Plague Island unable to go easily or trade with the EU. Companies have gone bust because it is too expensive to sell in Europe from outside the EU. Boris Johnson was the most corrupt Prime minister the UK ever had. Foreign EU workers have left Britain the crops are rotting in the fields and orchards. The fishermen cannot sell their fish in the EU and they also have gone bust. This summer British people trying to go to the EU sat for over 8 hours in traffic jams on the motorways. It is getting worse. In Northern Ireland, there might be another war because Ireland is EU and Northern Ireland is now UK out of the EU. Ireland is again a divided country. Good chance war will be coming again to Northern Ireland. It is very complicated.
@@AdityaSingh-dw3zm I doubt he ever will explain as it doesn't even make sense. Last time the UK was under an existential threat, warfare was completely different. It was just a stupid throw away comment I think.
The moral highground is the best place to install your artillery system.
Well presented, Dom. I do have some issues with targeted killings, and going after big fish like putin has obvious, dramatic ramifications. But smaller fish - generals, spies, those that send missiles into cities indiscriminately - I'd have no issues with a drone finding and removing them. I don't require "boots on the ground" for such work. But then, I'm neither a lawyer or military strategist.
What about targeting Bush for what he did in Irak ?
Speaking as someone who fly's drones for Ukraine, it does indeed require boots on the ground
@@BigMakBattleBlog Thanks for your efforts! I'll take your word that BOTG is needed too, I don't discount that at all. But I'd rather not risk UA human assets when possible.
@@davidb6576 it's all about range ..I'm right now in a position where the Russians are 2/3 km away and my drone can fly about that far and come back..Sadly there artillery has a much longer range ..Of course I'd I had a predator drone I could be sat in a control room anywhere in the world... to be fair it sounds like British morality. This document explains that very well czcams.com/video/eJPLiT1kCSM/video.html
Excellent programme as always Dominic. The KGB/FSB/GRU have a good track record in this game. 😉
Not nearly as much as Mossad, judging by the news.
A tough but timely subject to tackle. We must not let this issue creep past us in silence. Thanks for your responsible reporting.
This should be done at the beginning as the monster is at the core.
This is a stupid question. Anyone giving orders to engage in warfare should be subject to the same probability of getting attrited as the person doing the actual fighting. The chain of command for one side is the chain of targets for the other.
Putin qualifies as a strong candidate for this purpose.

Interesting questions, especially in the light of people in England, Russia e.t.c. getting poisoned or falling out of windows. Proactive or active is a problem in a lawful environment.
Nice one. I really appreciate this one!!
There’s nothing wrong with killing specific people in a war.
It seems more moral to kill the commander in chief than a private soldier who had no part in the decision to go to war and probably doesn't want to be there.
Fantastic coverage Dom, as always 👍

The archer vs crossbow gentleman dilemma. But what has history taught us? I don't have a clue.
Either way.. your team is setting the bar.
This topic is similar to the discussion in The Bomber Mafia: A Dream, a Temptation, and the Longest Night of the Second World War by Malcom Gladwell.
A small group of idealistic strategists referred to as the Bomber Mafia asked: "What if precision bombing could, just by taking out critical choke points - industrial or transportation hubs - cripple the enemy and make war far less lethal?"
I'm all for it...
I love how when he mentioned eliminating a specific individual, they put Mad Vlad up on the screen 3:00 ha ha, we can only dream!
Some references in the description would be appreciated
I had no idea that assassination was even a topic of issue within the context of war. I thought the ethics of assassination were only a matter about conflicts lesser than war.

Greetings from Utah and Mexico.
Morality . what a dilemma. It shouldn't be😮. When is morally right or immoral to execute a person? Was it morally right to dispose of Osama bin Laden? Is it morally right to let putler live?. My view on this is : it depends on justice versus plain assassination for nefarious reasons. Or war of aggression versus defense of one's Country; who's moral or immoral in this case ?or mafia style assassination vs. the execution of a mass murderer? The logic is plain to see. It shouldn't be no dilemma🙄😮😀.
Glory to Ukraine.
Putin qualifies as a strong candidate for this purpose.. Fantastic coverage Dom, as always .
I doubt anyone is debating the morality of assassination in the case of Putin any more than the Russians did in the case of Wagner Guy.
The video is about the morality of targeting specific cogs in the war machine on their way home from work.
I don't see the problem of targeted assassination. it's important that those in power making the decisions, can face consequences.
I don't like where this is going;
We killed Yamamoto.
Forget about laws of war, the laws of nature don't even apply here.
What is the point? Yamamoto was an active soldier.
Killing an active enemy soldier or officer, no matter where they are or if they are in uniform or not, is permissible under Geneva
@@gzer0x Yes, it is, but before Yamamoto, targeting single individuals was frowned upon. After that it became the norm, a very dangerous game to play as mentioned here.
@@pavelhromadka658 He was a valid target, but as time goes by it becomes more and more viable to target single individuals, which opens a can of worms that I don't know if we want to smell it.
@@Ray-md9nr Compared to targetting cities etc. it does not scare me as much.
Think how many lives could be saved if Putin were out of the picture.
Maybe - but it is worth considering what the alternative would be... eg in-fighting and break-up of Russia into various warlord-led factions each with their own nuclear arsenal might not be a situation where 'many lives were saved'.
@@shonunezekiel No one is going to use the nukes. Anyone who uses them will be bombed out of existence.
It won't stop the war. On the contrary, the ultra-nationalists that beg for blood will be amply justified. The next leader will have much more appetite for escalation. There are intellectual elites in Russia that will elect the next Putin. There is no easy way out of this.
@@shonunezekiel not to mention how many of those nuclear weapons will disappear on to the black market.
Killing is bad. Capture is preferable. Putting your own men at risk in a military operation is undesirable, regardless of the type of operation, but avoiding collateral damage is very very important… nN option in a war is properly moral. The best one can hope for is the least worst option, and which one that is is a question of circumstances.
Great job. But does not make a great spy novel.. Does thou make us think. Have a great trip, State, love paper plug at the end.
Both. The question is, in what order?
Shoot to kill policies were quite common during the Trubles, right?
I don't think Britain ever used targeted assassination the way the IRA did or Israel, USA and Ukraine do.
If they did assassinate IRA leaders they'd only end up getting prosecuted by a future British government.
Preferably capture because of the obvious informational benefits and the human side of the situation. But…
There should be a legal framework to legalize targeted assassinations. 60 million lives would have been saved if Hitler were taken out in 1938.
Not necessarily.
Imagine if someone competant at military tactics had taken over. Say, someone like Von Mastein..
All Hail Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov of the Ukrainian Military Intelligence Directorate ... A hero of our time ... Taking the war to the enemy's home! 🍻
This should be done at the beginning
Hmm, in a legal analogy (sort of), assassination is murder and indiscriminate bombing is manslaughter.
The issue is to call out those who use violence prentending it's in self defense, like the Kremlin does.
Is calling them out going to stop the genocide of several hundreds of thousands (even on both sides too)?
1 murder vs hundreds of thousands of manslaughter's ... weigh the values of those lives.
“Vse v poriadke” Evgeny Prigozhin, 😅.
The UK should of engaged in a bit of it after Salisbury.
Glory to the Warriors of Ukraine..SLAVA UKRAINI...Stay strong Ukraine....🇺🇦✌🇦🇺
Remember, it's ok when we/our friends do it.
I don't think it's helpful to get all too caught up in the morality of targeted killings. What counts is the (long-term) effectiveness of such killings. That's what makes the assassination of world-leaders such a touchy subject as the repercussions can be hard to predict.
Both sides will do it.
Screw legalities. Get it over with.
Do it!!!!
It’s a no brained to me
Too bad Tom Clancy is not alive anymore as some of his books deal with this issue.

Some times it is better to let an ineffective leader to continue in place. Putin is an example where it is better for him to continue to run Russia.

It’s quite simple. Ok if it is us doing it to them. But they can’t be doing it to us. If all Military spending was put into making each country better there would be no need for war. As the old saying goes “Make Love Not War!” Simples 🥰

The first interesting and objective piece of reporting from The Telegraph for some time. Who decides who is a bully though? Putin? Sure. Blair? Bush? Obama? Trump? Obviously not. Biden?
Putin is a bully and the other names mentioned are not even close to how foul he is.
How about all of them are legitimate targets of the opposing side if their countries are at war. They bought their tickets, they knew what they were getting into, they deserve everything that comes with it. They are all largely commanders in Chief after all. They seem to be every bit as legitimate of a target as a Private, Sergeant, Major, or General.
Ah yes let the British dictate to the world what the morality of war should be.
