Why China will be watching as Ukraine’s marines attack Russian troops | Defence in Depth

- Marine units, amphibious forces, naval infantry, however you want to describe them, offer military commanders a niche capability: the ability to approach the often overlooked flanks of rivers and the sea and launch an assault. Or, threaten to launch an assault.
Projecting military force from the sea onto the land has always been a tricky business. But with 40 per cent of the world’s population and many economic and political centres of power located within 60 miles of the coast, dominating the littoral zone - the bit of the earth where rivers and seas meet land, plus a bit extra on either side - has always been a critical task for the military.
The problem is that land-based systems to target troop ships and aircraft carriers now have ranges of hundreds of miles, all part of what the military calls an Anti-Access Area Denial, or A2AD, bubble. How to safely penetrate and operate inside an enemy’s A2AD bubble is evident today in Ukraine and is focussing minds thinking about a potential conflict over Taiwan in the near tomorrow.

Ukraine need landing tank ships
Will be? They're a bit late to the fight.
At 9:41 is when the video went super cringe.

@@soton5teveUkraine needs to negotiate for peace. Ukraine needs to stop it's stupidity. Ukraine needs to stop fighting this proxy war for the Anglo-saxon Empire. Some people and countries are really stupid.

While I was serving in USMC, got to interact with some Royal Marines. Back then (1980s), they regarded us as a completely different breed of cat. They were strictly light infantry, but were impressed that US Marines were first trained as light infantry, but then also as something else. Specifically, I recall one Royal Marine explaining how impressed he was that one of his USMC colleagues was a helicopter mechanic.
I guess the British learned all their amphibious landing doctrine doing years of Pacific island hopping fighting the Japanese empire in WW2?
@@heyynow6176 , at that time, they didn’t seem to regard landing tanks and artillery as their mission. More traditional Soldiers of the Sea - light infantry equipped for Special Ops. But that was decades ago and my memory is far from perfect …

Dom is a hoofing journo 👍🏼
Questions on the validity of the amphibious assault as a concept have abounded for at least the last century. And while it's true that new technologies may make the concept harder to carry out, I suspect that the concept will never not hold validity as a military option.
Well done. Thoroughly enjoyed this informative yet entertaining presentation.
I really enjoy these segments. Well done.
Enjoying your work Dom
Also, lets not forget the RM's long time partner in Amphibious ops since the early 70's ,the Netherland's Korps Mariniers.'Quo Patet Orbis'
Very much appreciate this update on seaborne landings. With maritime drone technology progressing in leaps and bounds, I wonder if it has been considered whereby a hi-speed drone with remote controlled machine guns have been considered to secure the beachhead ?
The USN already has fully automated ships at sea that are able to defend themselves. I would have to imagine unmanned boats will be a part of any major future beachhead assaults.
I've been wondering if Ukraine's "sea baby" maritime drones might be changed to become the launcher of a crude short range missile,
That way, Putin's warships would still be vulnerable in port, even if there were barriers to stop the current sea babies.

It’s a sci fi idea that is no doubt close! Remember the sentry guns in the Aliens movie?
Can imagine recoil and targeting on an unstable platform will be overcome. But at speed can imagine it’s further off.
Hellfires or similar or smaller maybe.
But those fpv uavs are already amazing. Taking those forward to new levels would be amazing too.

I subscribed to the Telegraph last year after having Ukraine: The Latest suggested to me by CZcams, it was and remains the most concise and yet thorough summary of the day's happenings in Ukraine. I kept my subscription after the trial period to do my small part to support all the great reporters covering Ukraine, in particular those on the podcast, literally in spite of the terrible Telegraph opinion writers. Keep up the great work Dom, Francis, David, Nataliya, Roland, Joe and all the rest who make the podcast fantastic!!
To be entirely truthful, the "steel islands" type of bases weren't out of range in Afghanistan or Iraq, they just were in place against an enemy that couldn't reach out to them. They would have had the same difficulty then as they would now if they had been engaging another state instead of an insurgency limited to mainly handheld weaponry.
Awesome insight!

Easily my favorite brief segment each week! One question: Is it now "The King's English" or will it persist as "Queen's English" for a generation out of respect? Cheers!

I’m an ex bootie who served in late 70s early 80s, there is no better force than the Royal Marines, the US Marines can not be compared to them, they are not a commando force, when I was in we numbered about 7k, the training that Royal goes through is the longest and most intensive in the world for an infantry soldier, it’s the hardest thing I have ever done in my long life. I’ve worked along side US Marines and they have the utmost respect for Royal. These few UA soldiers have been given the best training and combat advice in the world. I used to dream about having contact with the Russians, maybe it will happen soon.
Lmao "royal marines" who attack and kill poor people in Syria? Go and fight a real enemy for a change, ain't no one respects your pathetic and useless navy which relies on USA for your protection
The Falkland War showcases the Royal Marines vs Argentina which was at that time a Soviet backed army, which was the closest the Royal Marines got to that sort of fighting

@@jimjoelliejack Quite surprisingly to me, this is not completely wrong.
"The Soviet Union described the Falklands as "a disputed territory", recognising Argentina's ambitions over the islands and called for restraint on all sides. Soviet media frequently criticised the UK and US during the war. Significantly, however, the Soviet Union refrained from vetoing and thus made possible UN Security Council Resolution 502 demanding the immediate withdrawal of all Argentine troops from the Falklands.
However, the Soviet Union mounted some clandestine logistics operations to assist the Argentines.[208] Days after the invasion by the Argentine forces, the Soviets launched additional intelligence satellites into low Earth orbit covering the southern Atlantic Ocean. Conflicting reports exist on whether Soviet ocean surveillance data might have played a role in the sinking of HMS Sheffield and HMS Coventry.[209][210][211]"
