Downtown Lawrence Kansas: Bleeding Kansas Capital

- We are in downtown Lawrence Kansas. Lawrence's downtown is full of restaurants, brewery's, shops, architecture and history. And we are going to mill around for a bit see what interesting sites we can see grab some lunch and just enjoy the day.
Lawrence was founded in 18 54 by group from the New England aid society, a group of abolitionists that came into the Kansas territory to ensure that the State would be admitted to the union as a Free State. A lot happened in this town both before and during the Civil War. Most notably was Quantrill’s raid in 1863 that resulted in the destruction of Lawrence and the deaths of 150 citizens.
This town has been burned twice. But Lawrence rose from the ashes and has become an incredibly quaint college town.
I love history and I get out and go find it every week! I have found some amazing history just by getting out and exploring!

I've lived in KS my whole life and I've lived in LFK for a few years. Lawrence is my favorite city in the state by a landslide. The architecture, culture, parks, history, public transit, and prevalence of small business makes stand out from the rest of KS. It's like a little slice of Europe in an otherwise rural area. I plan to leave the US permanently to move to Europe, but if that didn't work out, I'd be happy to stay in Lawrence.
What a wonderfully created retrospective of this beautiful city. I had the pleasure of living in Lawrence while attending the University of Kansas and you brought back such wonderful memories. Thank you so much!

I saw Star Wars at the Grenada in 1977. My Son is a bouncer there now.
Lived here most of my Life it was fun seeing what you took interest in. There is a Abandon Mall on the River Line that closed when i was a Little kid today its a Hotel and a Court house for Civic court. There is A lot more history to our town tho as well Hope you come back someday to see some more.

Appreciate the honesty, it’s mind boggling… the abolitionist were anti- slavery but didn’t want black folks near them or in the state .. guess in the end it was all about r spreading capitalism while simultaneously removing the folks that labored for free to build an economy.. they were so dispensable..wicked..
I think you exaggerate. So does this video. Kansas became the home of many African Americans who were former slaves after the Civil War. They did not settle in Kansas due to the infiltration of slave catchers from Missouri because of the Fugitive Slave Act. My ancestors were Abolitionists who settled in Kansas during the Territorial days and harbored many ex-slaves during the Civil War in Topeka, which was a hotbed with Lawrence for the Underground Railroad. After the 13th Amendment was enacted, many Black People came to live here, mainly in Kansas City, Wichita, and Topeka, and some even in the western counties. But they stuck together in communities. Kansas was no different than other Midwestern states regarding integration; they were better than average. All you have to do is look over the border to Missouri and Illinois to see this. We were the first state to integrate Public Schools in 1954. My Mother remembered going to integrated schools immediately after the Brown decision, and there were few problems. The University of Kansas became one of the first fully integrated State Universities starting in 1876. Washburn University in Topeka was fully integrated before that.
African American was not the misnomer used at that time period in fact it was not used until the 1980s. 😢

Lawrence was never the Capital of Kansas. The first one was Fort Riley, when Kansas Territory was formed. Then Topeka was chosen as the site of the Capital, but slavery ruffians from Missouri made their own capital in Lecompton, 15 miles NW of Lawrence on the Kansas River. They were chased back to Missouri after the Missouri Militias burned Lawrence to the ground. Lawrence had a choice of becoming the State Capital or being the site of the University of Kansas, just before Statehood in 1860, and the Citizens chose to be the site of the the State University. It is still the home of the University of Kansas, which I attended. Just setting the facts straight. Lawrence was never the Capital of anything.
My thumbnail does state Lawrence as the "Bleeding Kansas Capital" but nowhere in my video do I say this was the actual capital. I say that Lawrence was the capital of Bleeding Kansas because it was at the center of the Bleeding Kansas activities. It's a Idiomatic expression. I didn't mean it was laterally the Capital. We did visit Lecompton as well on the channel! It's another great little Kansas town! I also went to KU there at Lawrence - Rock Chalk Jayhawk!!!!
