- The French first came to Illinois in the 1600’s after they traveled here looking for a route to asia. They didn't discover that but they did discovered the fertile land of the Mississippi river valley and stayed. This stone fort was built by the French in 1753. Prior there were wooden forts but they were destroyed by the Mississippi River. The fort was occupied by the French until 1765 when it fell into British hands. The Fort covered an area of about four acres. The walls of the four were 15 feet high, two feet thick at the top and three feet at the bottom. The main gate opened to the Mississippi River while the back gate which is now the main entrance faced the Bluffs. What we see here today is a reconstruction on top of the original foundations. Six buildings stood within the Fort: a storehouse, two barracks, the commandants house, the Government House and the guard house.

I love history and I get out and go find it every week! I have found some amazing history just by getting out and exploring!
I try to pronounce everything correctly. I really do try, so please forgive me if I don't pronounce something properly. :) Be Nice!
Wow, la présence française ne se situe pas seulement au Québec. Est-ce que l'histoire enseigné dans les écoles parle de cette période de la nouvelle-france qui s'étendait jusqu'en Louisiane? Excellente vidéo.!!!
Thank you for the tour, that was really cool.
Very Interesting. Thanks for this one!
Brings back very fond memories of goods times going to the Rendezvous every June. Native Americans, the French and British reenactments. Good food, activities and crafts. Friends and family went every year for a long time.
Thanks for sharing! I’d love to visit during the Rendezvous! I bet it’s fun!
I went last year. Very good video!
Been there. Very cool.
Well worth the venture.
Cool tour - and I loved the comment about not having to peek through windows, it really made me feel like I was right there with you for this one 😊. Oh, and you definitely have my sympathies over the wasps, too, having been chased by one while I was out shopping earlier today! Finally, may I just say how happy I am to see you back posting these videos again after falling silent for a few weeks. Obviously I don't want to pry into the reasons, but I for one really missed joining you on one of your adventures each week.
It was definitely more spectacular than what I thought it was going to be. And that comment was absolutely for you! Lol. Sorry for the pause but every year my granddaughter and grandson come to stay with me for a month and they are a bit of a handful and take up all my time. You’ll be glad to know that I have been busy and there are more adventures in the shoot!
It's fascinating!
Cette est Bien! La Francais! Quoi faire Vous pense? Bien video!!!!
The Fort s/b flying the French Flag of the time. It is absolutely fantastic. Rifle ports in the wall. Were there any Indian attacks, or British attacks on the Fort?
Thanks for this!!!!
Imagine your French,,A river is flooding the outpost,,what do you do? Well make a raft out of wine barrels,,& sing in the rain
No, it's not interesting.
It's only of interest to those with the intelligence to appreciate history.
