    THIS STORY:
Shalor Winchell Eldridge was involved in most of the vital events connected to the founding of Kansas. The Eldridge family was there when William Quantrill and his top Lieutenant Bloody Bill Anderson rode into Lawrence, along with some 300 armed guerrilla attackers on horseback, to sack the town. These men were of the pro-slavery "Border Ruffians" - and they would have blood on this summer's day.

    _________________________________________________________
The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
    Some are famous.
    And some infamous....
    ....and some with tragic endings.

I am the great-great granddaughter of Col Eldridge, and was thrilled to come across this video posting. I currently still own a 20% stake in the beautiful Eldridge Hotek in downtown Lawrence. So very proud of my familial heritage in the Civil War era.

Oh my gosh Julie, thanks for coming here. You have an amazing family legacy!!
I’ve always been fascinated with the Eldridge family, and I always stare at that family picture. I’ll bet you might even have the original. I’m particularly intrigued with Mary, She was beautiful - and so sad that she died so young.
Do we know what happened? I’m so curious. If you know -I would love to share it in a post. My email is facesforgottentoday@gmail.com. I don’t often see the replies here as there are so many comments to try to keep up with 😊
The Eldridge Hotel is a fantastic place, a landmark of important history, and in such a vibrant and fascinating town. I already miss getting back to Lawrence.
If I may add one thing:
When I first came to the Eldridge, before the remodeling - the picture hung above the fireplace …as it should. The remodeling is nice and all, but when they moved the picture down into that side corridor, I was really disappointed. That’s speaking also as an architect.
It’s rightful place is over the fireplace.
Anyway- we were happy to cover your family’s plot at Oak Hill. I had found the graves a couple of years ago. I always stop by your family there to pay my respects.
Anyway-Will always love Lawrence. Just imagine going on a time machine and meeting your relatives? Holy cow.
      Thanks for stopping by!!!

Its a bit more complicated than that , It was retaliation for the previous week imprisoned family members of Quantrill raiders were killed in a dbl story prison collapse. The Union army jailed close relatives of Quantrill's raiders > 2 doz girls /young woman ( all under 20 ) locked up under guard in a 2 story house > they complained that they could hear and feel > back corner of the house was being dug away THEY FELT UNSAFE and on 13th August the building collapsed killing several and injuring many.
Bloody Bill Andersons sister was killed and also a niece had her legs crushed > rumour soon spread that the guards caused the collapse by deliberately undermining the foundations . ( years after the war an enquiry found most likely the fault was builders renovating the 2 story house )
Both Quantrill and bloody Bill Anderson didn't survive the war !

The Brother being my line a James Campbell Usher (my 4th Great Grandfather) and his sister, Agnes Usher. They were the children of Noble Luke Usher and Harriet L'Estrange Usher who were traveling actors at the time ...they traveled with Poe's Mother and Father and knew one another. 5:15 I wondered where the term came from. Very interesting.
6:00 So interesting how all these places and names tie together. Thank you for telling this story. I feel like I have a good understanding now of the history.
6:15 So many died. Huge area there where they are buried around their monument. So sad how many died. Pretty monument. Hard to read the letters on the side away from the daylight. I'm glad you read that to us. I couldn't make some of it out easily either.
8:21 Thank you for taking us on this tour of the cemetery and telling us this history that we wouldn't have heard about otherwise.
9:30 Always heard the name (from the name on the hotel and it being haunted) but hadn't heard the story about the family. So interesting to hear their life story.
12:24 As stated in the live chat by so many, I cannot believe that they are so famous locally and have only this little stone of a family member to mark the entire family plot. Seems like the town would do one family marker. I think because up until the last 5 years, people have not visited graves and cemeteries except when they had a loved one to bury at/after a funeral. I am betting with the uptick in cemetery visits because of all the stories you tell and others, that the city may consider the significance of marking their grave.

So exciting 😀 I love the history of the raid and hotel. Yes, the Eldridge is haunted.

The musical, intelligent & creative lyricist Warren Zevon penned a song called "Frank & Jesse James" where he put in facts for a more balanced view of their deadly exploits. However he sings about the Quantrill bloody raid in this song. Listen to it. :) You may be hooked on Zev. I'll stick with "Send Lawyers, Guns & Money" for a great driving song.

There were raiders on both sides but war history is written by the victors.

I placed a gravestone to Captain Nicholas Hoysradt in Oakwood that I have never seen other than a picture.

He was born in NY, served faithfully in the 20th NYSM during the Civil War, moved west after the war, continued studying and became a lawyer and deputy sheriff. He was shot in the line of duty and buried in a unmarked grave. While living in NY I had the VA send a gravestone to be placed on this grave in Oakwood.
