He's always had such a distinct sound. Super awesome!
Never heard a electric kit sound so natural. They sound real obviously. But you often lose the feel, but his playing really suits them.
***** Yes they do have a better rebound And allow you to actually play a little faster if you can pull it off like him. lol
LORD DOOM Yea.. I learned on an E kit and once i went to acoustic it was like learning over again.. Doubles didnt quite feel as nice lol.. But yea, this dudes nasty either way..
You took the words right out of my mouth man!! When you play, and you get in that groove, and are so in the moment! You do things that you otherwise couldnt before, its like a higher power takes over and you become the witness of what you doing! That feeling is what i strive for everytime i play!! Again, well said!!
i had the pleasure of playing a nice roland kit at guitar center and i couldnt pull myself away from it. being able to incorporate melodies into drums by yourself is just magical. hope i get to own one of these kits some day.
Very well said and I totally agree. I get caught up in the technical way too much. As a teacher, it's hard for me to "teach" feel. It's something I'm really working on personally so I'll let you know if I figure it out :) - Jared

Thanks for having him in. I got to see his drum clinic with Roland and it was awesome. This had some great camera angles to see what his hands were actually doing and there were a few good tips that I picked up. Thanks again, guys! Don't let the negatives drive you down!

I hate how everyone is like why is he so good but he is only touring with jay z. You don't understand how much he gets paid!! You act like he is restricted on his playing. Of course he is keeping pocket most of the time but that's a drummer's job. And if you ever seen any of his videos of him playing on tour you can tell he loves playing hip hop because of where he grew up. He also gets to solo too. Jay z understands he is a very talented musician and he doesn't want to choke his ability.
Tony's highest profile gig is Jigga. But he is always playing somewhere with other cats. I see him playing around LA all the time. He's doing the music he really likes.
I'm sure Tony gets a drum solo each night and has plenty of opportunities to jam hard during Jay-Z's set.
that's a drummers job depending on the music. Not all music requires the pocket.
What kind of music do you mean Joel? Just curious.
A lot of jazz allows for improvisational and very loose playing. Fusion, prog, etc. More complex music where the drummers are also a highlight in the band and not just kept for background time. Not to say in those genres that the drummer shouldn't lay it down and keep time, but a nice and easy pocket isn't always what needs to be played and sometimes would be very unfitting in certain musical contexts.

I think Tony Royster Jr is one of the most underrated drummers.
Not Really, he has gotten a lot of attention. when I saw his solo when he was 12
from 97 I saw it in 07 I freaked out & sent it to every Musician friend I knew.
I think most gospel style drummers out there are underrated in the mainstream because relatively no one really knows who they are. Usually because "aint my style". But any real drummer out there is totally aware of these guys imo.
Because he doesn't do extreme tech death metal, ignorant noobs and keyboard warriors just dismiss Tony Royster Jr's masterful talent as they only drool over mindless blast beats and machine gun double bass played without an ounce of groove to save their lives.

Since I saw the performance of Tony, at an age of 12 years old, I follow him and he is for sure a good inspiration. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Damn can this dude play. I love how he's able to convey complex musical ideas and thought processes into simple explanations. That 13/16 section inspired me to try that time signature for the first time.

These electronic drum sounds are cool, but at the end of the day nothing beats a real/acoustic drum sound.

Plus it seems like acoustic > electric money wise. If you have a low budget and get a cheap electronic kit it's always going to sound, feel, and even look crappy, whereas you can pick up an acoustic for a few hundred dollars and tune it up to be as good if not better than an electric that would cost much more. This is just my observation though, I may be wrong
That depends. Electronic drums suit his style a lot. It really depends on what kind of sound and style you're aiming for.
Been following Tony since I was very young (im just a couple years younger than him) and one thing that strikes me is although he's always been great, over time he's always evolving to be even greater of a drummer. I see a lot of drummers or musicians that are great and you check them out years later and they still sound almost similar, but stuff he's doing.. the whole crazy time signature, different styles he improvises through, you can tell that the guy is still a student of himself and is always exploring new boundaries

I really respect Tony because I too grew up on drumming, and never learned sheet music until I was 18.. plus I love his ode to Buddy Rich which is the Drum God. Great tips for the intermediate drummer to understand.

orangecucamonga In this example, he's taking those 13s pretty quick, but at the end of the day 13 is just 6+7 and we can all play in 6, So just add an extra beat to every other bar of 6. You can think of 11 in a similar way. Here, you still think of two bars of 6, but drop a beat every other bar of 6.Groups of 13, 11, 7 and 5 are frequently used in prog rock. For examples, listen to Rush, Dream Theater, Neal Morse, Transatlantic or Porcupine Tree (to name but a few)

I play approximately 100-150 gigs a year. Not ONCE have I ever needed to bring my laptop or my iPad. Not once.
Your also not gigging with click tracks nor programming for live arrangements. So there you wouldn't need to. Y'all on different levels for gigs

I like the drumset. I have the v-drum kit but I never liked the sounds... I had to get the toontrack superior drummer packs... that made eveything 100x better.

Sorry, but u have to say this, he plays with Jay-z??? He is so amazingly talented and he plays for Jay-Z??? And some will say he does it for the money, but really this is what is wrong with the world.
Jay-Z is an accomplished musician who has changed the way that the human voice is used for music, as is Tony Royster Jr. for the drums.
Your taste for music doesn't define what is "absolutely" good or not. Don't be prejudicial, Jay-Z is a great musician, even though I don't like his music.
Joey van Leeuwen Jay-Z didn't change shit. He's a good rapper, end of story. As far as money goes? I'm a musician in fairly popular band in my home town and feels nice to get paid for playing guitar for a couple hours. If I had the chance I'd hop on with a big band for the money. I don't have to like the music because at the end of the day, I'm getting paid to play guitar.
Maybe listen to some of the live arrangements of his music before judging..? His Coachella set, and the Live @ Brooklyn Centre sets are especially awesome. As far as I'm aware, Adam Blackstone was his MD on the last tour. Look up some of stuff he's done... listen to arrangements and compositions of the live shows, then maybe give an opinion.. you might be surprised. It'll give an idea of the kind of ridiculous talent and musicianship these kats have. :)

If Tony Royster Jr. was completely unable to speak, he'd still be ten times more amazing than most people. Who cares if he says aksed. maybe its part of his culture. some people grow up with their parents talking like that, or maybe thats how their friends talk. Besides, the only point of language is communication.

Thanks for your comment. I suggest doing some more research on Tony. Even though he's still young, I know he'll already be remembered as one of the greats along side of many other drummers.

Great Stuff! I am a rudimental drummer. Drum corps experience and teaching experience. Tony has some great advice in the technique and approach area in application to the drum set. I use these same ideas in my area of drumming. It's all about physics. Being efficient. Working smarter and not harder. Great stuff Drumeo!

Great video and lots of great material to learn from one of my favorite drummers...For me I took from this video above all the amazing playing....was his musicianship, humbleness...I would like to ask to Mr. Royster how do you build up your feet independence when you have no access to a drumset...Secondly how do know which genre of music is best suited for you if you new to the drumming scence and last but not least how to
pick your stick for the genre of music that you play.
Right, which is what this whole presentation was about. All the speed demonstrations address the issue of control which is just as important as musical creativity.

Yep, there are so much more important things than speed on drumming, and he just talked about them in this video. I play on amateur level for 15 yrs and hardly seen such an inspirational video. this guy is clever, has discipline and respect for the public. Also one of the greatest drummers in the world.
