The incredible Larnell Lewis is back at Drumeo for another mind-blowing full lesson. In this video, Larnell demonstrates how to build epic, killer fills powered by the kick drum.
You’ll learn how adding or removing the bass drum can create a sense of tension and release, get ideas on where to place the bass drum in a fill, and pick up many other tips along the way (like why you should always take the time to play things slowly, and how to start mapping drum fills on a grid).
We often hear big or epic massive fills and it can be challenging to figure out how to put it together. Don’t worry - Larnell’s here to teach you how to get there with flair!

Thank you everyone for the support and kind words!!! Drumeo, much love all of you! Thank you for the opportunity to share my passion. 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
I love you bro! you change my live on drums since 2012! God bless U
May i ask the reason for tuning and using the extra snare as a tom??:) i love the way you play. Truly one of our times great drummer:)
Alexander Haugland I like having the option of a snare in that position, and I like pitch bending the low snare more than a floor tom I also dig the sound quality of that low snare when it’s off
Dude thanks for the answer. I am gonna try it out for sure. Thank you for the music and the lessons and i hope god bless you and your family. Have a great 2020:)
@@LarnellLewisMusic Larnell: thank you specialy for that solo in your tune "The City Lights" . Thank you for all your playing and teaching. I look forward to get to know you some day. I've read you came recently to Sevilla in my country, Spain. I hope you were treated as you deserve, I hope also that you had a good time and I hope you come back one day to be there and be able to cheer at your playing live. Best wishes for you and your growing family!!!
"Playing fast without clarity is not helpful to music." Genius.
Yeah a lot of guys play fast but it doesn't mean much musically. You want the audience especially non drummers to "get" what you are doing.
28:47
Yes, I've been playing for 20 plus years and never once been complimented on my speed. Its about clarity and ones ability to have the other musicians sink in with your groove that gets it. Keep attending a weekly jam session if you dont believe me, youll see who comes to the stage to play with you and who doesn't.. If they rush to the stage, it means they wanna play with you because you make them sound good.. And the audience will return too.. Cheers
After a decade of playing self taught..yeah yikes I've learned a lot from Larnell. He entirely makes it look to easy tho, impossible to get a bad take from this guy!
Took me many years to figure that out, unfortunately...
I'm a simple man, I see Larnell Lewis I click
David Morais And simply push that like button
so Chinese😄
Yeah, me too:)
Most definately. This is guy is just amazing
Same same
This man is something else.
He didn't just focus on chops, stickings, and linear vocabulary (which i sortof expected with the title of this video), but first and foremost, he gave us insights on how to actually use this in the most musical sense possible.
Well spoken, humble and a great educator, tackling the drums in a way that's often forgotten in these times of social media and mindblowing chops : serving the music and expressing yourself.
Thank you guys so much for having him over
I think this is my last drum instruction. There is so much here I can do anything if i follow Larnell's advice.
@@ankhor9252
Never ever stop learning.
Please will you guy stop with the “he’s well spoken” that is a very offensive term use to describe a black person that doesn’t offend whit people or who makes them feel comfortable.we hate to hear that from people. And i don’t care what you’re color is cause it doesn’t matter most black people just don’t say that. This i why is offensive, it’s a statement that you’re surprised he can communicate at that level because most black people cant. Im not saying you at all feel that way but that’s how it perceived because historically that’s how it was used to describe black professionals. All one have to say is he is very professional and smart..that’s it
@@ologistyurny3752 I’m truly sorry I didn’t mean to offend you or anyone else with that statement. I’m a drummer myself, so if I call someone well-spoken I’m referring to his/her ability to put the intricacies of their craft, namely the drumset, into words. ( which isn’t easy to do because music is bigger than words )
I was in no way referring to a skin color, religion or whatever. He knows how to transfer his knowledge about the instrument orally, so for me, that’s what being well spoken means in that context.
Perhaps I should’ve used the word articulate if that’s more acceptable, but that’s what I meant.
All the best
@@Johnlnw it’s all good and we’re on the same page and i hope i didn’t offend you. Larnelle is a great musician.
He's my favourite drummer right now. Larnell is just so down-to-earth, humble and chill. His style of playing is so tasteful yet it doesn't come off as flashy or excessive. The way he talks about music just shows his personality, no douchey pretentiousness or bravado.
Douchey ? Hahaha ,your words are silly.
Eric Moore and Larnell Lewis are two most free spirited drummers, which allows them to express themselves and demonstrate techniques so flawlessly.
Larnell's drummer IQ is off the charts.
Big thanks to Mathieu Fiset for writing and submitting "Chick's Pain" which is the track Larnell played at the end of the video.
Thanks !! :D You guys are the best :)
Awesome tune
I’m glad he was breathing hard after his solo. He is a human!
right
He's just pretending so we don't suspect his cyborg origins.
No he's not. He's a God pretending to be human.
You can't help but smile when listening to Larnell.
Knocked out man !!
Yes
So versatile. His jazz playing is blitzing most pure Jazz players for example. This dude is so versatile. Very articulate, interesting to listen to and a powerhouse of the kit. He's big fish in the Monster Club. So much clarity on every single beat he plays. Unfuckingbelievable. The end playout from 15 mins leaves the interviewer in hysteria. I'm seeing hearing stuff I never heard anyone else play eg 31 mins. Sensational. He's up there with Weckl. Well in a different way.
Paul Bentley 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
@@LarnellLewisMusic you are seriously welcome dude. I'm here having a coronory after watch that.
And on top of all that he played enter sandman after never listening to that song. Now there where I think 2 sections he messed up on, but what he added to the drums in enter sandman was amazing, he truly is probably in the top 20 best drummers.
Larnell has such unrestrained mastery over his instrument. I've never seen anyone do what he does at 15:18 how he did it there. Blows my mind.
Conor Reed that was the coolest 15:18...evah.
Very cool, and definitely a technique not often used on the kit. ...risky to try b/c you've got to use both hands and it doesn't always sound clearly.
Gavin Harrison does that too sometimes
Edit: for example here czcams.com/video/O5nAA_QXBPY/video.html on 6:45 mark. The whole video is worth watching though!
czcams.com/video/zBLDExIo7ZU/video.html
James Blackwell does it too here in his solo at the end
I saw him do it in high school.
The amount of time he's put into his craft shines through every time he sits behind the kit.
Now this is real drumming! Playing the music and not just licks & fills! 🔥🙏🏾🙌🏾👌🏾
This is one of the best lessons in Drumeo history. I come back to it every once in a while.
gotta love the framerate and his drum prowess for making the sticks look like they're bendy
The thing with Mr. Lewis is that you dont sit down and watch him live or on CZcams and just be impressed with how well he can beat the drums. Were all in a trance on how impeccable he becomes the whole drum.
He does not beat the drums ,he plays them.
I'm somehow just seeing this now for the first time. His fills groove, his groove is otherworldly, and anytime you see someone playing with that much joy you know they're the real deal.
Damn. Dude has it all, the skills, the technique, the power, the creativity, the accuracy, the knowledge, the respect and the heart! Good for him! Spread it around and gimmee some!
Caught this live several weeks back late one Friday evening. Next day ordered my Live Oak Custom Hybrid on the strength of hearing Larnel blast the hell out of it. Larnel is one of my favourite players, right up there amongst the greatest.
Paul Yates Drummer & Percussionist can’t wait to get them man , lucky you
Got them Marcus, they are great!
Drumeo you are the best for sharing this with us all. Thank you!
Larnell is really something else. What a kind person. Glad to have him in the drumming community. We gotta build each other up!
0:18 make mistakes one of the best drumming tips I’ve ever heard so simple but yet so innovative
K I S S ,Keep It Simple Silly.
It wouldn’t be enough to call this man a great drummer, which he totally is but holy cow is he one of the most insightful and positive educators in music. I enjoyed this video immensely!!
Holey cow bell.
Larnell's playing are so clean and smooth. I can just listen to him play all day.
This man is the epitome of a professional of music. Totally different level from just a professional musician. His understanding of every nuance of musicality is on the highest level. Such a gifted man.
I’ve been a drummer for over 10 years. I feel like I improved just by watching this😂♥️
You did!
I got the opportunity to meet and play with Larnell in a college master class. He's a real cool guy that showed some awesome tricks that even me as a BASSIST got to appreciate!
One of the best in his waves! because is not a over player drummer! He knows how to make music. Very educated and humble drummer ! Definitely one of my favorites!
I’m constantly impressed by Larnell Lewis’s high level of skill, humility, and love as a player AND educator. His thoughtfulness and commitment to making drumming as expressive and musical as possible is evidenced in everything he presents to the listener. I learned a lot from this lesson. Many thanks 🙏🏽
This is one of my favorite presentations. Larnell - apart from being a monster on groove, fills, and absurdly amazing kick drum chops - is an elegant communicator. He is SO clear, and giving of his concepts. Seems like a truly great person. 5+ stars for this Larnell. Damn. Exceptional.
The swing is real, that tom/kick work is really awesome
Thijs van Gisbergen the swing is, but the funk definitely is.
Larnell Lewis just deserves 'BEST DRUMMER" title. He Just too bautiful and the best teacher ever
So many of Larnell's fills are embellishments of the backbeat, where the snare remains on 2+4 regardless of whatever fancy stuff is going on around it. Just one of many reasons why he's one of my favourite drummers.
This cat has put the work in. Darnell is the first young cat that has blown me away in a long, longtime. He seems extremely intelligent and by all standards a badass player and musician. Love to study with this cat one on one.... I believe he could help me put it all together. I can’t say enough about Darnell !!!!
Are we still talking about Larnell, or did you change the subject? LOL
I like Larnell Lewis so much because even if he is one of the most skilled drummer on the planet, he NEVER overplays. He is so musical, always in the pocket.
Somehow even after listening to his music for dozens of hours he still manages to blow my mind
51:42...hi-hat reverse fade?!? I've never heard that before!! I knew Lewis was good...but this entire video was unbelievably insightful!! AND a Canadian!! 😁
Matt S. Yup I lost my mind the first time I saw that on his Zildjian Live video. It's actually kind hard to do cleanly
any tutorials on how to do this? Definitely tryna add this into my arsenal!
The fact that im not even a drummer and I learned a lot just now and can actually apply what Larnell taught to other instruments and life itself only show how amazing he is! Full respect!!!
This literally made my 2020❤️
You're the best😎
🇵🇭
Hope to see Chris Coleman here in drumeo soon🤘
Chris Coleman is performing at the Drumeo Festival: drumeo.com/festival
san ka sa pinas bro?
The smile after the fill at 1:09 this dude is great and he knows it
He is confident ,not cocky.
I’ve been doing what he said in the intro for a while and it’s so rewarding !!
Remarkable! Thank you all! Greetings from good old germany!
If this genius of a man says its important to practice slow to understand articulation, then this simple jack needs to as well. Love your humility even when you are one of the best drummers in the world.
This poem is about a man named Larnell:
His pocket and drum fills are grooving so well!
He's tasteful and yet he can play fast as hell...
He practices all of the time I can tell!
@Mac Ton F tier comment
@Mac Ton 😘😘😘 I just love a man who will rhyme with me, purrrr
Larnell is just that guy that blows my mind EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!
Bless you Larnell with all your incredible tips, we are all here to learn and become better drummers and musicians. Thxxx.
Larnell not only knows what he is doing, but why and when to do it. I’ve never heard anyone explain things this way. Great video.
I'm down with an hr just Larnell playing. Been watching him for yrs, since he was 1st on drumeo so I personally thank drumeo for the introduction... U guys are awesome!!!
Your awesome ,we are all awesome.
I love listening to Larnell, his creativity , feel, percussive ideas and chops are superb
Larnell Lewis. For the last hour, I was touched by the drumming angel. It was filled with wisdom, musicality, a humble soul and finally one of the best advise I have heard in a long time." Be kind to one another". Much blessings bro.
I like the fact when Larnell started playing put his glasses on! ! I really like his understanding of music in general . The guy is serious!
Who agrees Larnell is a TOP TEN drummer of all times together with Buddy Rich, Thomas Lang , Marco Minneman, Sputt ...etc?
thomas lang???😆😆😂
putra dharma_ : technically I mean???
You placed Thomas Lang in the wrong tier.
ludwigrx : which tier you suggest?
Kev Cthulu : Yes NEIL too👍🏾
This drumming is from another world. Loving every second. What a gift this man has. Thanks Drumline for capturing this, and thank you Larnell!
When I was young like 13, I was taking drum lessons and I had the opportunity of going to a lesson one day in the small shop the guy had and there sat Buddy Rich behind a kit when we walked in, I sat just to his front left and 5 feet away while he tore up that kit, I dont remember the rest, But You Larnell are without question right there with Mr. Rich, Such a pleasure to watch you work, Thanks you so much for allowing us to be part of this incredible expirience, !! Awesomeness
These two individuals have lovely souls man. This episode made me feel good.
Never heard of Larnell before today. I'm an instant fan.
Oh dude, you must watch all of the Snarky Puppy We Like it Here videos now!!!
Straight to division 1
@@Morganstudios thank you. I will do that😁
what a great musician! His approach to drums is so positive and inspirational...
Much good thanks for sharing OG 👍🏽
my favorite drummer. God bless him. thanks for this video
Yes Larnell Lewis! I've been listening to his album non-stop recently and so glad he got an updated lesson on Drumeo!
Thank you!!!
Phenomenal, to say the least! Good taste meets precision and tone.
Reminds me of Omar Hakim's fluidity. Thank you Larnell and Drumeo!
It does, but with added turbocharger
Larnell Lewis is killer! I knew what I was going to do for the next hour after seeing how long this video was. Worth it.
Dude...that was amazing...oh my God!! Larnell you are probably the best drummer in this planet, that level of technique and musicality is just incredible! I always enjoy like a child watching Larnell playing drums.
Oh wow ! Great lesson and GREAT playthrough of one of my composition at the end !! Chick's pain can be found on the RoboJazz album, originally played by Stephane Chamberland on drums :) Thanks Larnell and Drumeo !!
This song sounds like an intro song to a 90's anime. Also, I like that wobbly, potato chip looking splash cymbol next to the hi-hat.
It’s a transformer zildjian fx splash, looks like a 10in
He did this song on vf jams season 2. Dope song by the way!!
Or a Mario Kart track song
Reminds me of a Sonic game
I know I’m late to the game but wanted to say that as a rock/metal drummer, this has opened my horizons as a drummer, your explanations and style of playing is helping me be a better musician, thank you
Class act & an incredible drummer!!
His final words are among the best I have ever heard from a musician...Listen up people!
I love this man, such an inspiration and sounds like a really chill dude. Absolute fire on the kit.
After I saw and heard this dude spazz out on Snarky Puppy's "What About Me" song, he instantly became a new Favorite for me!
So happy to see this! Such an amazing drummer!!! And if any of you have a chance to see the Larnell Lewis band live, it is an incredible thing to see this man play up close. Thanks Drumeo!
What a blessing and a positive force Larnell is for the drumming community!!
He must be one of the most balanced players there are nowadays. He enjoys playing, he’s super musical, has an incredible technique, and above all, is super creative.
There can’t ever be enough times to have larnell on Drumeo
He's no Dumeo!
Larnell, I appreciate your ability to articulate how you think musically and how you are able to clearly share your thinking about what you are trying to do. Each time I hear you play, and/or talk about your playing, makes me aware of my own approach and what I am trying to musically accomplish with my own playing. I appreciate you and what you guys are doing at Drumeo.
Another proof that you don't need a double kick just to play cool and fast. Skill is the key. Great playing Larnell!
23:13 instantly reminded me of the the groove Aaron Spears played to "Caught Up".
*Yeah, me too*
i would love a short clip showing how he did to tune the second snare as a tom
And his main snare
Me too!
Good idea, hope Drumeo can provide it
Had so many unsuccessful attempts to get both the snare and Tom sound right on the same drum
@@talibgrant8310 that's the issue, i can never get the Tom sound on the snare.
Magical and that smile......Im floored and blown away but that is expected with Larnell.
This has been one of the best drumeo lessons I've seen so far; and that's a huge statement, given the amount of phenomenal drummers that have come through your drum channel.
Cheers Larnell and drumeo!!!
Larnell is boss!!
Digging that snare floor tom!!
Words of inspiration from a great player....thank you
There are some talented people in this world. I thank all of you
5:42 - every drummer's reaction. "That's not fair, man!"
Why so true man 😂
Not my reaction , I thought ,oh yeah new things to rattle my brain .
Another great lesson from the Great Larnell Lewis,
I love his lessons especially the kick technique he does. I just lost it too at 3:10.
Thank you Drumeo for this! :D
I also want to say I highly love the production you guys put on your videos!
Congratulations to his second baby as well you're an inspiration to me Larnell. ^_^
N3V2 - Nevto i think it’s got like a little bit of a heel toe movement in there. this guy is absolutely insane
@@user-id2dx4qd6j Thank you! I'm actually playing Heal Up for everything except my triplets at the end of the video
Larnell Lewis Music ahh ok man, pretty unique technique. awesome playing
so i just ran and jumped kicked my tv at 3:10 ... i just lost my mind 😅🤷🏿♂️
Imhotep_drummerjones ok
I come back to this constantly.. There's so much to this lesson.... When Larnell showed up in the coaching corner it was like a prayer had been answered... Jah Bless all!!
Larnell Lewis may be the most wonderful person on the planet...as well as an incredible musician and jaw-dropping drummer. Seriously.
3:11 That right foot. A lesson in itself.
16:27 "so teach us how to do that Larnell"
Larnell - " *dying laughing* that's funny"
I absolutely LOVE Larnell's playing style and technique!! Everything is right where it's supposed to be!! And most of all, it's musical!!
Really cool, i am very happy to find this video!
I was gonna say "it's been a while since I heard drums that pretty or playing that great" but then I remembered I just watched another Larnell video this morning...
He doesn't have pocket, Pocket has him.
This comment is way underrated!
he is pocket.
The metronome is so jealous!!
This man is practically a pair of cargo shorts
Beautiful, powerful drumming. Best I've heard in a long time. The ride sound/feel 11:00-15:00 is just gorgeous
Total monster!!! Larnell has really changed how I approach drumming and the mindset that goes with it.
Saw Larnell’s face and clicked almost instantly
dear god 52:52 those tripples almost made me fall out of my chair.
yup at that exact moment i was like wtf the foot is so cleaaan
I sincerely love every bit of this. I’ve watched this video more times than I can even recall at this point, and I learn something new every time. Even if it’s just by watching something he does, and not from something he specifically says. Thanks Larnell, you’ve genuinely become one of my favorite drummers.
First heard Larnell drumming with Snarky Puppy and instantly he became one of my favourite drummers.
Congratulations to you and your wife on the birth of your daughter !
Awesome lesson, awesome drumming (as always)
3:12 my God that foot work was nice
