40k Stories - Legions: The Ultramarines
Vložit
- čas přidán 10. 02. 2017
- The Ultramarines were a very effective and powerful force in the Great Crusade, and a major danger for the Traitors in the Horus Heresy. Led by Roboute Guilliman, they would have a profound effect on the Imperium for millennia. This is their tale, from their conception to the close of the Horus Heresy.
Please note that this visit to Ultramar was made BEFORE the announcement of Guilliman's resurrection.

Ultramarines are gonna sh*t themselves when their primarch starts whacking them around the head whilst screaming "what the hell is wrong with you, I wake up and find out you've been worshiping my stasis bound body like a bloody Jesus "
Well, Guilliman didn't do any of that, but he had a similar reaction! XD
Sorry to be off topic but does someone know a way to log back into an instagram account?
I was stupid forgot my password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me.
@Bryan Roger Instablaster =)
@Aries Ryker I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Aries Ryker It did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thank you so much, you saved my ass :D
"The Imperial Fists secured an alliance with Uranus"
Is that a euphemism?
Abyssal86 actually no it isn't, just a statement of fact
To much Mass Effect not laugh at that statement! :D
Hold on, I'm having trouble finding the sarcastic applause button on my keyboard.
I admit I laughed at that... just keep Post Heresy Fulgrim away from Uranus at ALL COSTS!
Lol checking to make sure nobody said it first and here you are. Imperial fists are gentleman, Horus would have conquered Uranus wether they liked it or not.
FINALLY.
Ey B0ss!
I like the Ultramarines - the colour scheme, the whole Greco-Roman thing etc.
My issue is the disproportionate amount of love GW give them.
Great video though
Lee Jenkins well they r the biggest legion u can tell that I love them
It’s branding, the boys in blue are one of GW’s most recognisable mascots to outside players. Don’t have to like them, it’s just a business thing really.
Its only gotten worse since they introduced Primaris Astartes
That's because Ultramarines are the best
Rogal dorn what are you doing?
Dorn...fortifying this position
Papa Smurf is back.
When I made the video, this hadn't been announced or revealed, so I couldn't include it unfortunately.
Tactica Imperialis
Yeah, I know dude. Cool vid, by the way
Papa Smurf was eaten by space locusts
13:25 5 out of 10. "It was ok" Rogal Dorn
+ Focus on post-battle governance = no unstable society
+ dont have weird culture/ unstable factors to tar pit own progress.
+ Being the largest in numbers & owning big space territory is always good.
+ If you like OP stories, you get it here.
+ Being the poster boy, your army will never be suck tier.
- Some takes the rulebook too hard, ending up discord & rivalry with others.
- Due to strict ruling & ridiculous codes to follow, many space marines end up journey to eye of terror for repenting. (death sentence)
- Taken point their plot bubble is better than emperor's might, many people will not accept the overall purity, might & excellency. Expect some butt hurt.
Good video as always Micheal, can't wait for the next one my friend
0:57 Bleak and uninhabitable mountains. The highest of which is inhabited.
🤣 Good video. I just found this amusing.
Great video mate, l really enjoy the amount of content you put into these. 👍
I really like your way of telling a story.
Z Dude thank you!
"I didn't really study greek." I see what you did there
Good stuff as always
Greeting honourable Battle-Brothers!!!
Um....Im a Space Wolf......we are having a little trouble right now.
Honorable, yes.
Wolf, wolf....wolf, wolfiing, Wolf, wolf.
🐺
Im currently reading Deathfire and Theil was leading a team of "red marked" to combat traitors in the Ultramar region. So far he isnt dead and escaped Calth after fighting Kurtha Sedd :)
OCC: While many (Including myself) tend to mock the Ultramarines for being the poster boys and mary sues of 40k, in all honesty it's probably hard as is to write them properly. Matt Ward failed to write lore about them due to constantly raising them up as great (due to being a fanboy) yet never writing worthy adversaries to challenge their greatness. A hero is only as good as the villains he/she take on. What do you think on this?
IC: Oh yeah...These guys...Yeah they conquered my homeworld back in the heresy. Funny thing was that my race was allowed to live for a while under the Ultramarine and Imperiums rule, we remained loyal and produced shot for the Imperium. Then the Inquisition came...I'm not sure how many of my race are left but the bastard Ultrasmurfs let us just die besides all we did for them...*Sigh* off to the next legion world, mate.
I think your logic is sound - making someone the poster boy and thus supposed to be awesome does present the challenge of writing a worthy antagonist. I agree they needed a challenge, someone to face repeatedly.
Well... Space Marine fiction in general I find tends to be poorly written. They focus too much on the Super Soldier Action aspect rather than Character and Drama. There's only so many times you can read passages that sum up to "... I was outnumbered 30 to 1, but I'm a Space Marine! And their shots bounced uselessly off my battle plate while I charged. Every swing of my blade cutting down a heretic as they panicked and died."
... and as stupid as it may sound? I've read a LOOOOT of Space Marine fiction (Particularly short stories) that have that as their go to action, and the story is hinging around the action.
But in Ultramarines in particular? Just seems like they forgot the second part of the phrase. "Jack of All Trades... and Master of None." The Ultramarines in lore are being pushed as not only skilled at all aspects. But BEST at all aspects. Thus Mary Sue. The best bits of fiction (Such as a short story in I believe it was Shadows of Treachery) show the Master of None though. The story in particular I was thinking about being the testing of the Codex Astartes by Guilliman. In which its scenes suggest most of them (Excepting the World Eaters test) was a close thing balanced out by the fact that the Ultramarines wouldn't try to fight the enemy on their terms in their mock ups against Salamanders, Wolves, World Eaters, etc. And of course, in the end, the final test against the Sons of Horus, they failed. They also tried to "Tip of the Spear" the "Horus" formation, the guy who was best know for his "Tip of the Spear" assaults.
Granted most people quote this story because of the "The codex isn't a doctrine, it's a guideline" bit that Roboute and his marines end the story on. But I think it's also interesting because it shows not only the strength of the Ultramarines (Screw you, we'll fight the way we think is best against you rather than being tactically locked), but also that when it comes down to it... they're just going to falter and fail when they try to counter someone's best tactic with the mirror tactic. They're not going to out siege the Iron Warriors, out melee the World Eaters, or Out Magic the Word Bearers, etc.
Pyroskies The Imperium not killing a xenos race on sight bullshit they destroyed the Interex
Not necessarily Zeno Blues. There is a status called "Sanctioned" that Xenos can get. This generally says "They're not a threat and are allowed in as basically 3rd class citizens to the Imperium". The most well known example of this is the Jaekoro, who basically have proven themselves unable to be effectively enslaved... but also have absolutely no desire to actually cause harm towards humans. You mostly just throw them piles of spare parts and they randomly make cool devices like Digi-Weapons out of them. As well there's the Dark Angels and the infamous "Watchers in the Dark" Xenos that they have tamed and use as serfs.
And to be fair, Horus had no intention of destroying the Interex. But due to Erebus Douche Behavior the Interex attacked the Imperium, not the other way around. And well, you don't attack someone like Horus without getting kicked square into the nuts until death.
Like many things in lore: "Standards are suggestions, not rules" as there are almost always exceptions, and usually not just one offs that only show up in one particular story.
Hitomi Salazar The Diasporex would like to disagree I believe the last words of the flagship's captain were "We only wish to be left alone" for some strange reason the modern Imperium is somehow *more* tolerant of xenos than Crusade era Imperium
15:11 well that prediction didn't pan out so well.
Dark Imperium solves the question of Guilliman's ``death``
Thank you for all your hard work it was very enjoyable. go ultra marines
Just found your channel and its amazing
What's their High Gothic name? "Astartes Ultramarini"? "Adeptus Astartes Ultra"?
dIRECT0R Mary-Sues
I've heard Adeptus Astartes Ultra before, though whether this is their name I'm unsure!
"Smurfs." Or, "Wardian Jerk-Offs."
Love your stuff here.
Hope you hit up the Salamanders. My favorite of the First Founding Chapters. May be related to the fact that along with the White Scars and Iron Hands they're also the most ignored in lore. No one is fucking them up by giving them Stupid attention...
.... other than Nick Kyme.
Hitomi Salazar I'll be getting to every legion in due course, though I cannot promise when we will reach nocturne!
Awesome as always. Can you do one on Catachan deathworld soon please?
Stevo 1980 I'll see whether I can fit Catachan into the schedule!
The imperial fist made a treaty with uranus. So....The emperor fisted uranus? God damn, that man is a legend.
Great vid Bro. Thanks for collecting all the UM lore. (Btw, the "p"'in "Ptolemy" is silent, I know you called yourself, just for your edification ;)
Guilliman LIVES.
STOMP STOMP
Since Guiliman is awake now you should probably revisit this
To be fair, all of the Legion era lore is still correct and the only bit that needs changing is the fact that Guilliman came back. This isn't a "modern era" look at the Ultramarines, it's 30k/Heresy so it wouldn't be a big change.Though you raise a fair point that I should do a video on Guilliman at some point.
Great video but in regards to the Macragge's Honour, it is still around in the 40k universe and in the hands of the Ultramarines. They lost it briefly to the Red Corsairs in the Indomitus Crusade but it has always been a part of their fleet, as for Marius Gage his fate is still unknown but I assume he made good on his promise to return to Ultramar and probably died fighting in the years between the Heresy and present time.
He said Uranus.
What are you, twelve?
You heard of Aeonids Red Marked. A commando unit of Ultramarines drawn from censured brothers.
I have Ultramarines. they seem to make them so much better than any other primarchs and legions.
Thiel reappears in a later audio drama set after the Alpha Legion assassination attempt. Stratagem, I think?
"Ultramarines may not be ultramarine blue after all-- but rather a shade of cobalt blue-- making their entire existence a massive lie?"
-- Lord Inquisitor Remleiz
where's the first legion at? seriously though I love your videos
i disagree with the second most successful legion in the great crusade.. considering the imperial fists were given more recognitions by the emperor and was his go to legion when he was still fighting.. must be the yellow scheme, since he likes gold..
Nah. They're called the imperial fists for a reason.
@Ahmad Zubair of course there would be more written lore about them. they are the poster boys. thank matt ward for all of it.
I'm in a weird postion on wheter I like the ultramarines or not. if its great crusade and horus heresy, I love them, even guilliman. 40k however, no. Matt ward deserves mention for that. except cassius. somehow that dudes fluff is good.
The Ultramarines are still badass af. The Battle of Macragge, Plague Wars, Indomitus Crusade, etc.
To me, it's kind of like the issue of Superman. Immensely powerful, near invincible, and remarkably HUMAN. Then, he gets written into a rut of being an infallible Mary-sue, that sucks all the charm out, and people are left embittered to him, and just find him boring. Then he gets written by remaining fantards, having him do more over-the-top nonsense to make him seem cooler, but only serves to make people hate him more. It's really sad, to be honest.
@@nooneinparticular5256 to true man ive always liked the 13th until matt ward.

wasnt guilliman resurrected by the point of this video?
He isn't technically resurrected until tomorrow! The series will probably address the Gathering Storm developments when a relevant topic comes up, but it hadn't when I got to Ultramar (which was before this video was released, as I work ahead).
Thiel has extended lore....
The reason the blood angels got to terra first is because the ultra marines are not as good as everyone thinks they are. They didn’t get there in time because they failed.
why is there ah space marine like 20 or 30 feet taller then the other space marines?hes as tall as the dreadnaught.
"Gwilly-mon"
"I'm not so sure."
First, love your videos Michael
TheSneakySnek thank you!
I want the first captain to burst out of a warp rift with a burning ship crashing in to the ground then battling with xeno then get saved by guilliman and then joining the crusade from where he left of
Funny enough, this nearly happens, kinda - the Macragge's Honour popped up in Gathering Storm III!
Tactica Imperialis he's back!!!!!????,!!!!
Robbie Williams!!!
Ooh, this is from the Before Times....before Yvraine came along, worked her pelvic sorcery(allegedly) and put life back into the Lord Regent.
Cawl clapped Guilliman into the Armor of Fate and Guilliman clapped Aeldari cheeks... and everything turned out.... well, it's 40k.... how do you _think_ it's going? Lol
Smurfs!
Robute for all the love GW gives him, he seems to get his ass kicked every time he fights a brother. Hell I’d go so far as to say every time he’s in a battle with anyone. It’s kind of annoying.
U-rid-eh-cee
Ultrasmurfs. God damn Matt ward. like seriously.
wait, you didn't mention the fact that roboute Guiliman is back and alive? wtf.
SupaL33tKillar that hasn't actually happened yet and the book hasn't been released either so we don't know all details of how and why it happened
Zeno Blues he's already confirmed to be back since a week or so ago. there's no speculation whatsoever in this one.
2 reasons. 1, this visit "canonically" happened before all that happened, so my character wasn't aware. 2, I made the video before it was revealed and couldn't be bothered to go back and edit it!
i suspected as much. Also I wasn't aware that these videos were while you're in character lel.
Those guys are like the opposite of fabulous.
God Emperor why is it that one of the most hated Primarchs had the best and most privileged life ever
Angoron had a best and privileged life? ;)
I dunno, I'm hoping that when he wakes up from his power nap that he's basically completely lost his mind. The higher the pedestal, the harder the fall after all. Not to Chaos, just break him in general like a kit kat bar.
Hitomi Salazar Sadly that instead happened to one of my favorite Primarchs Vulkan poor poor Vulkan T_T
I know it happened. Well, saw part of it in Unremembered Empire after Vulkan Lives. I blame Nick Kyme. Someone needs to smack his hand with a wooden spoon anytime he gets close to the Salamanders. I mean he's not C. S. Goto. But then again I hear the Dawn of War novels were written in like... 2 days. At that point I blame editors for not fixing his work more than I blame him.
Nick Kyme though... just repugnant. I mean the main character of his Salamanders in 40k is a white guy. Which... wow. Is actually kind of insulting since the character's primary characterization beyond "Is the hated white guy in the chapter" is "also the only competent guy in the chapter" with the rest of the Salamanders being written as rage faced, basically half a step from going Khorne Berserker. -_- I'm not surprised by anything that happened to Vulkan or the Salamanders after Vulkan Lives with the quality of his writing. Shameful when the "Go to" guy for a Chapter is Bag of Hammers level stupid.
Hitomi Salazar ain't he the reason "there can never be a good Salamanders book" is a thing people say
Never really heard people say that, but probably, yeah. Black Library has "Go to" people for the original legions. For example Graham McNeill for the Ultramarines, or James Swallows for the Blood Angels. Unfortunately Nick Kyme somehow became that person for the Salamanders.
Hm. Well, how about that? In addition to the formation of the legion, we see the Primarch being more at home as a statesman, than a warrior. What's more, the heroes of the chapter have flaws, make mistakes, and their stories have appealing drama, and suspense. Where'd all this good writing go?
15:11 HAHAHAHAHA
Damn Smurfs ! I can't wait for Gamesworkshop to move forward from the Ultra Marines..🙄
Ah Macragge, home of Smurfs and Mary-Sues... *Eats Banana and throws peel on floor in front of the Exterminatus button* welp time to head to the web way... *"Accidentally" slips on banana peel* Oh no I'm "accidentally" falling on the exterminatus button while the main gun is pointed at Macragge! What an unexpected and horrific "accident!"
Slips on banana peel, oh no i'm "accidentally" falling while wearing no pants on your head.
What an unexpected and horrific choke on my nuts "accident!"
Beliar How did you get on my ship?
Matt ward that's how.
hahaha
This did not age well after Rowboat Girlyman came back...
Metall the story here is technically not going to change, as it all happened 10,000 years prior. The only change I would have to make is my comment on the stasis Guilliman is in, but the story of the legion is the same
so you can finally say his name right. never thought i would see the day.
was getting old hearing you say robouTAY, i guess enough people to you how to ACTUALY say it.
silent E. simple phonetic english.
That's 40k THEORIES, rather than me. I agree that the pronunciation should be this way, even if you base it on a language like French or Latin it should sound that way (in French, it would be é, for example). I'm not complaining about alternatives, I mean I get complaints a lot on how I pronounce Legiones, but it's how I prefer it.
SMURFSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All I can hear is gWILLeeeemun
1:37 Wait so you think that orphans and refugees are somehow automatically less capable than other people? That’s a pretty shallow/fascist opinion you’ve got there
I’ve looked back over the script, and that’s not the intention at all, if that’s what you got from it then I can only apologise for the choice of phrase. Many of the initial legions were drawn from warrior cultures (such as the iron warriors) or for specific abilities (such as the thousand sons) - the recruits in to the Ultramarines aren’t less capable, surviving the Unification Wars in the face of the Thunder Warriors is incredible in and of itself, it’s more that the other Legions had a supposed “leg up” from their genetics or heritage and so the ability of the Ultramarines to become so renowned is a little more impressive than for, say, the Thousand Sons. Was it a slightly shallow statement? Possibly yes, but it’s a slightly poor choice of phrase as opposed to anything political or ideological. Either way, my apologies for the implication, unintended though it was.
Tactica Imperialis I appreciate the detailed response and I am glad to hear that you didn’t mean it that way. Thank you.
@@ObjectiveMedia Take your liberal shit somewhere else. MAGA.
its pronounced Uran-us not Ur-anus lmao :)
Alternatively, could possibly also call it by the original Greek name: Ouranos. Oor-a-nos
The ultrasmurfs, arguably the most hated loyalists by fans
SSVjoker I hate period angles
“The most loyal” “flexible” ??? No
