I have to acknowledge and appreciate that you never take yourself too seriously. Purists and gatekeepers can be a hinderance to people learning to love the outdoors. Experiencing and appreciating nature in any capacity is important for the individual and for society. Thank you for being a positive role model!
This is very fitting. If every Person I know would be more in touch with nature, I think a lot of "modern everyday problems" wouldn't bear such weight on their thoughts.
There's no right way to do any of this stuff. But not enjoying yourself is the definitive wrong way. I'd been going on solo trips for years before I learned I was doing it all wrong - all my stuff ("gear") was wrong, I wasn't starting fires the right way, my knots weren't "real", and don't even get me started on how my habit of singing with earbuds in while hiking is really a harbinger of deep-rooted psychological issues and a fundamental lack of respect for Nature itself... Taking one's self seriously sounds like the opposite of having fun, and the term gatekeepers always makes me think of fairytale trolls who live under bridges demanding to be paid in gold coins or your favorite eyeball or something equally ridiculous 😜 Your well-stated comment is accurate, important, and I hope everyone reads it!

Hey Joe.
You inspired me to go on my first solo camping trip when I was 16. That was 5 years ago now.
I was about 30 minutes from my car, I set up a tarp shelter and had a campfire. It rained, I had spiders crawl over me and I spilt my breakfast but it was an experience I would never forget.
Since then I've been on countless solo trips and I even film them now. Going solo is my favourite way to camp now.
I just want to say that this video is awesome, you've been a big inspiration to me and I hope this video helps others get out and enjoy what nature has to offer!

I don't know if you know how your videos improve lives.
Personally, I am 67, handicapped, use a walker and soon will be moving to a wheelchair. Cancer and heart conditions. I will never be able to go camping again. I rarely leave the house other than to go to my doctors.
Your videos, and some of the others I subscribe to, take me where I can no longer go. While it obviously can never replace the actual camping, canoeing, hiking experience, they provide my escape from the drudgery of being in bed or my reclining lift chair. Thanks.

I've been solo camping dozens of times. The first time I did it, I drove over an hour and 30 minutes from my chosen camp spot to talk to my wife to help calm my anxiety. I have had to bail out for various reasons at least 1 in 10 times. However its getting way more fun, way more relaxing, and its been very worth it!

Love your honesty. The first time I solo camped I didn’t sleep at all. I was 17 and had camped many times with friends and family, but never by myself. I was scared shitless. I was waiting for the sun to come up just so that I could say I did it lol. Now I sleep like a baby.

Before I ventured off into the woods I solo camped in my own backyard. Tried out all of the gear and used the fire pit for all of the cooking. Brought in long branches to cut up. Etc... It was nice having the safety net of my back door. Made a little journal and the next weekend I was off. Of course I did watch plenty of your videos. I'm addicted now. Thanks Joe!
Years later and I still use my back yard several times a year to learn new set ups, new gear, and new skills before going out and relying on it away from home. The backyard is a severely underrated camp spot!

Nice to see you get back to teaching mode. Don't get me wrong, I love the canoe trips and solo trips. But a good teaching video for beginners is always a welcome treat. Your early teaching videos are what inspired me to get back out there. Keep up the great videos.
My first mistake was made on my first solo trip. I got to camp late in the day. By the time I was set up it was dusk. I had no time to climatize to my surroundings leaving me nervous all night in the dark. Thanks Joe for your videos. You inspired me to buy a canoe and camp. I’ve learned so much from watching you! You’re a great teacher. Keep them coming!
Same thing happened to me back in 2020. I was in the Dixie National Forest in western Utah. It was between dusk and complete darkness when i got there and had to setup and gather wood in the dark. Warnings about bears and mountain lions always gets the mind going and too far at that. Lol. I find that a super bright light with lots of food and a bright light with lots of throw helps me at a wider distance up close (flood) and the thrower helps me to see at more of a distance, though the beam is more focused so or won't light up a huge area unless you're wielding a massive light which isn't suggested unless you're car camping. If you'd like suggestions, just let me know. Also medical supplies and a form of protection ease my mind as well. Always be prepared. Good luck with your future trips. Take Care and Be Aware.
@@IncredibleChief I’m 4yrs into solo canoeing and and camp. Even though I have more experience now and I’m better prepared I still feel nervous. It’s not so much the creatures or the dark. I’m scared of the random crazy human wandering into my camp. The risk is low I know that. For me it’s about showing courage and self reliance. Plus I sleep with my bush knife and bear spray so I’m well protected. First aid kit is a must have. I cut my hand once and was so glad I have the kit so I didn’t have to turn back.
@Gary Wilkinson well I’m Pushing 60 right now. I bought my first canoe when I turned 50. Joe inspired me. It’s never too late. My Swift is light. Cost me a bit but well worth it.

My little grandson (that loves your children's book and can read it all by himself now ❤️) has been having fun camping with his 2 brothers and mum... She even set up a small tent out the back and they sleep there. They experienced their 1st overnight in a massive rain/thunderstorm last week and loved it. Fills my heart with joy as I grew up camping every other weekend spring to autumn back home with an aunt for about 7 years as a child. It doesn't have to be an expensive thing and you don't have to travel a million miles and children love the adventures!
Hi, again Joe. One point I would add for first timers is that you don't need a huge fire cook with. Some low coals are ideal for most cooking needs. I also wanted to mention, Joe, that I believe you are probably the best instructor on YT. A great video for beginners who are lost as to how to start, and a great video for veteran bushcrafters who want to go over the basics. As always, thanks Joe.

I do back country camping, usually solo with my kids since they were a baby and toddler. But we haven't gone in about 5 years. I finally booked a week long camp on protected land with no power or water to give my boyfriend and his kids a taste of back country camping. It's their 2nd camping trip ever. And I'd say it's their 1st official camping experience.

Hey Joe. Been watching you for years. I have severe anxiety and depression and for whatever reason, watching Solo winter camping helps me. This year I've decided I'm gonna start going. I have zero gear so I'm starting from scratch. I'm not new to camping, I been going my whole life with family when we were kids and my two Best girlfriends in my adult years, but never alone. Not afraid of animals more afraid of people and being a woman alone camping can be intimidating but I really want to go this fall. Hope your hand is getting better and thank you for all the videos that make us happy.
The title of this video was surreal to see. For the last month I have had this insane and relentless feeling that I need to go on a a solo camping trip. I'm not new to camping but also never been solo. I'm also in South Africa not Canada, but this vid is still super encouraging and helpful, thank you man.
Never will forget my first solo camping trip, none of my buddies wanted to give backpacking a shot so I said forget it and went by myself. Turned out to be a pretty good learning experience on how to be better prepared for everything being soaking wet after a night of rain, and not to mention the creepy feeling of being surrounded by the dark forest but the freedom you get to experience so worth it. This video definitely will help push me to get out there for another. Cheers Joe great video as always!
Always be prepared my dude. A poncho or even a quickly deployable tarp setup can help keep you dry and a super bright light with lots of flood (i use a headlamp) and a bright light with lots of throw will helps to ease my mind. A form of protection like bear spray or a firearm if possible, also helps ease my mind. Hope this helps. Enjoy your future journeys in the outdoors. Take Care and Be Aware.

I am a zookeeper in chicago and I regularly feed the hippos day old sausages so they have a taste of their home. I put strings on the sausages and swing them around the hippos they get so mad at me and scream but it's an obsession sometimes the hippos try and break out of their cages but I keep swinging those hotdogs in wide circles over their heads. Luckily my boss doesn't know I do this or my coworkers

Tips & Tricks with Joe, this video is Truly Inspirational - I remember 4 Years Ago came across you're Winter Bushcraft Videos and I was so Amazed of how Badass this guy his, I told my Mom I'm starting my own Bushcraft Channel. The very First Time I did a Overnight Alone was during Winter Time in a small Forest beside my Highschool 😆 I also didn't have a sleeping mat biggest mistake ever, for 3 Days my entire body was stiff and felt like I need oil for my bones so I may move. However you thought me a lot of Stuff since then and became a lot better at it!
Thanks for a fun video. I would to love see more folks going solo camping it is healing. I'm in a wheelchair now so my options are limited as to place but a hammock is the way to go for me. We need more handicapped accessible remote places to go too. I really miss packing into the bush. Thanks Joe
Great vid Joe. Hiked and camped the Appalacian trail from Maine to Georgia back in the '80's... Military camping in the field...etc. too bad my wifey is a "Glampour".. she wont tent unless it's hooked to a 5th wheel and has a shower...lol. I love your show. Giving folks a view to camping is an awesome idea. I am unfortunately at the stage in life where I like KOA cabins more than sleeping on an hard ground. No matter I have a inflateable bed ;) I just got tired of packing unpacking setting up and tearing down. It becomes a chore and I got tired of it. Maybe my daughters with travel trailers are tired of that too?

30 yrs ago I couldn't get anyone to go camping with me so I packed the car and went to a state park. Talk about scary! In the morning I was SO proud of myself. At the beginning of this you pulled out the bug spray and sprayed the underside of your hat. What a great idea.

I was terrified, and excited going into my first solo. It was the best and most liberating experiences ever. I did the I can bail if I have to spot, and it helped. I now am excited for every trip, and I got for weeks at a time. Part of it was watching other women and listening to other women doing it.
I just got back from the bwca. my first trip up there in 15 years. my first ever solo canoe trip. I did 5 days and it was incredible. I really pushed myself and it was a very intense and real experience. definitely going back next year. I'd also like to add that a tourniquet is something that should be in every bush first aid kit. a little cut or scrape won't kill you in the wild. but a serious bleeding injury will.
That's my escape......I've been doing a spring and fall trip into the bwca for quite a few years now. Definitely miss it if I miss a trip!

I highly recommend solo trips, great time for reflection, or to learn. Camped out of a backpack, truck, quad and even a bike. Even a 1 nighter out in the bush, sleeping in the car does wonders for the mind.

A great thing my father taught me when hiking is to stop randomly or at significant land marks,stop,,turn around and see what it looks like. It's very comforting on the return trip to see things from the same angle.

Hi Joe, an excellent tutorial on primative camping. I really enjoy your channel as it brings back memories of my youth doing what you do now. I am born and raised in the Alaska Bush and have been doing the Bushcraft thing for about 60 years, I am 74 now. I have lived in a 14'x16' wall tent for about 6 years. I still live off grid but, more rural than remote. You are an inspiration to many of our youth and adults as well and you have a great attitude. Not much seems to bother you and that is good because, doing what you do, you have to keep your head on straight. The meal looked really good. Thanks for sharing.

Just went on a solo last weekend with just a 3x3 by the river. Man it was way overdue. Life definitely gets in the way more often then not. But this was a great video brother. I love this style joe . Stay healthy brother ttys 💪🏻🥃🐦

Hey Joe, that soloplex guyline from the vestibule should have a loop knotted in it. That loop is for the tent stake. The free end should have a hook on it for the vestibule doors. Hooking the doors pulls them away from the mesh door to form the vestibule.
Popcorn snaffu is the perfect example of why I love watching your channel. Shit happens and sometimes you just gotta roll with it. Also is an example to newcomers to this type of camping. You are gonna make mistakes, shit is gonna happen. Learn from each experience and every time you go back out to the woods is going to become easier and more fun, but also each time you go out something different can and will happen to keep you on your toes. When you start out, definitely have a "safety net" of some type. A small accident at home can quickly become life threatening in the woods. Keep your phone charged, keep it on you. If you manage to get hurt, you can at least call for help. Love watching this stuff, keep em coming good sir!

Joe, I do not know if there is such a thing, but you could make a game where you go camping and collect valuable things only a camper would know about : pitch, chaga, plants for food and medicine, etc.

Love this, my first solo trip and my current only solo trip, i was… lonely. Other than being lonely around the campfire at night everything else was great. Wanna go solo again soon.
Did my first solo camp in 2020, lucky enough to live near a bunch of wetlands and parks in the northeast. Decided to give it a whirl after watching Joe and Steve Wallis, I know two very different ways to do it. But I figured I was literally in walking distance of home. Bought a basic kit, and went through set up and break down a few times before going out. And even though it was so close to home come sunset, sh*t got real. Lol. It was the most terrifyingly fun 2 days. I have gone out a few times since. But that first time still sticks out. Now I am trying my hand at bushcraft as life and time allows. Thank you Joe (and Steve) for making it seem doable.

@@jimijaimz i use to go float in the pond there all the time with my dog. One day 3 teenage boys showed up an they almost drowned my dog. I'm a 5ft 3in. Older woman but when that happened I looked pretty good an i was scared. They left me alone. Thank goodness. Those boys are grown an hopefully gone now. Since i don't have a dog now, I'm taking a shot gun for sure. Thanks for your support.

I have been camping for years, bushcrafting before for it was bushcrafting, and I enjoy the duty of passing it on. I loved this as a refresher and someone else's perspective and teaching methods.
Your videos have given me a glimpse into real wild camping life, there are many wonderful things in nature waiting for us to explore and live in peace with nature. Nature is very inclusive.
I have always loved you trip videos. And you have gotten me back out into the woods after many years. But, this is a great video that you have created for people that want to start getting into it or just getting back into in it. Thank you Joe for what you do.

All these skills and things aren't just for solo camping. I don't really bushcraft except for close to my house but I've learned so much from Joe and it shows when I bring my friends and family in a normal camping setting. It gives you and the others confidence to go out a little further and little longer knowing the person who is "leading or guiding" the campground trip could in a pinch make a fire or just have some extra knowledge. And the willing to back out and go home is maybe the best advice. Your not impressing anyone when they want to leave and you want to tough it out.
Ivw solo camped a bunch of times but still watching any videos I can of the selected few tubers I value their content as important. Even beginner tips.
Joe, my 1st comment after following you for years. Keep on going! Thanks for such an inclusive video. Kids will have a better chance of getting outdoors with your knowledge, coming from a 63 year old kid that's driven The Alaskan Highway a few times. I always learn something new watching you.
I personally enjoy Solo camping way more than with my friends, for me it's time to myself and reseting.
With friends it's more of a social event, a pub in the woods and bushcrafting.
Either way just getting out there and experiencing the outdoors works wonders whether you stay the night or not, I've bailed 3 or 4 times in the last 12-18 months
Keep it up, Joe! I've yet to solo camp, but I am definitely looking forward to it. I just worked 11 days straight in Chicago, and what gets me through it is knowing that when I have some time off, I'm going to get out of the city and surround myself with trees, good food, and fresh air. Wow, the “it’s ok to bail” point is really important and I’m glad someone said it.
My norm for tent setup is to remove the obvious stuff from your spot, then throw down my ground cloth and lay on it and roll around looking for sleep depriving stones and so on that were hidden, and then put up the tent. I’ve never brushed the leaves back because I don’t like getting mud on the ground cloth on account of it transferring to everything else when it’s time to pack up! But Joe’s way works for him, and that’s great! ONWARD!

Thanks Joe for your videos, always inspiring! I went solo camping at Lake Taylor close to home a few weeks ago after 30 years without sleeping in a tent. It was so great to hear the loons calling at night and have the ton of birds wake me up at sunrise. I really needed that alone time in nature. This past weekend I went camping again with a friend this time at Bon Echo Ontario Provincial Park, again another amazing experience. On July 16 I will be 55 years old and that morning I will do a 1.5k open water swimming in Ottawa (BOTB Bring on the bay easter seals fundraising event).. I am pretty nervous about this, I know I can do it when I swim alone at my own pace but this is a timed event with lots of people around. I'm way out of my comfort zone!! I haven't been camping since I was young. I hope I get another chance once or twice before my time is through. Love following your channel for the memories, and for learning new things and about new products (which are great compared to what we had so long ago). Great job on this video! Thanks!

Nice one Joe. I rarely get out but you were one of the first channels I subscribed to when I started looking into backpacking & bushcraft. I'm subscribed to so many channels now that I can't keep up. 😀
Hey Joe (or anyone who might have an answer), the one thing that always made me drop the thought of going solo camping like you do, is not knowing where to go. I am in the GTA area, so not much crown land around me unless I head about 3-4 hours north. Even then, I'm not sure how to go about looking for a spot - where do I leave my car, how do I know that i'm actually in crown land, etc.
Side-note on the video. One thing that nobody ever mentions about camping hammocks is mosquitoes. If you're loved by mosquitoes like I am, they can bite you through the hammock's fabric. If you're in a sleeping bag it's fine, but on hot nights I have trouble because crawling out of the sleeping bag means potentially touching the side of the hammock with bare skin and giving the mosquitoes a midnight buffet.
My first solo camping trip was in the early 80's. I loved it. I went to an area that I was familiar with, and had a great time. It helped to assuage my fears of camping alone.
Done a lot of solo backpacking myself - best place to reset the mind once you have done it a couple times and get the routine down in my opinion. This is a fantastic video Joe - should really help get some people out there! 😀

You are the reason why I started camping a few years ago!! The way you talk makes me feel welcomed in the outdoor community, so I gave it a go and it changed my life. My dog and I can comfortably camp because of you!! I’m so grateful for the knowledge you share. People like you uplift and encourage others. I can’t thank you enough for that. Once in a while I will bump into people outside that talk down to me. One time I went into a station to get a permit for hiking, and the person working asked me if I was sure I wanted it because she didn’t think I could make it to the top of the peak. Those moments hurt, but I always remember your positive outlook to keep me going. I don’t have to impress anyone. I just need to be myself and enjoy my time outside.
i found everything in this video 100% factual and said by a person with YEARS of experience, thank you for helping newer campers out, everyone make sure to be safe, and most of all HAVE FUN.
