Joe, get a Lodge Lid Stand, you can set the pot on it to put coals under it or use the lid for a skillet. Also, get a trivet for keeping your meat off the bottom so it dont burn. Also get a lid lifter for removing the lid. Your wife may commandeer that for the kitchen... Also, treat both the pot and lid both inside and outside. Heat it till it smokes a little. Jerry

Glad I found the channel, very fun, informative and entertaining all around. You will probably need to season your dutch oven more than once, but over time it will develop a fantastic carbon layer. You can also use the upside down lid for frying. Recommend you get some type of trivet for the bottom (mine is a split ring of cast iron scrap). It enabled you to bake in the oven convection style-heat travels all around the food like a true oven, with a small pan you can bake anything that will fit in it-bread, sweets or anything you don't want gumming up the bottom 😊. Enjoy and keep experimenting.

Joe is my neighbor 🤭 I’ve taken him hiking, I clean or do yard work “with him” and sometime I never get outta the hammock but I always feel like I was with a friend when it’s over. Also, all Joe’s dogs 🥹 and his incredible relationships with them has influenced me greatly. I called my GSD Wolfie b4 Wolfie hit the scene and I was thrilled 🤣 ParaSocial relationships can be a very good thing. Joe is all good 🤷🏼♀️ & I’m so happy so many get to share Joe. You make your shelter as you see fit. It's your channel. You know, a peaked roof would have been better in the rain/wind and would have used much fewer materials..but you know that.

Take a food can. Use wire mesh. Make a chimney cap. The wild blows... turn the cap to block the wind. A T shape well 2 cans and rivet it together. Free

Good job seasoning the cast iron. Very important to oil it up after every washing. Keep it oiled. If you dont, it will crack. You can cook anything and everything in that pot and it will turn out great. Nice time in the woods by a beautiful lake. Camping is my favorite thing to do. Nice bird you shot, cleaned and cooked up. Good eatin'. Wolfie seemed to be just loving this camping trip. He's on to it now. Nice tarp shelter and very versatile. Good times.

Joe, partridge much prefer yellow birch and poplar trees with pine stands for cover. They dont favor open areas. Spruce grouse just like thick pine/spruce stands. Usually when they flush they dont go far but they are the masters of blending in. Theyll sit dead still untill you give up. Ive been dooped by grouse hundreds of times but its all part of it. Good stuff.

My grandpa used to take me fishing. He wrapped chicken onions etc in tin foil. Put in a clay tile and filled ends with mud. Layed in the fire. Baked while we fished. It works for fish too. Baked in its own juice. Good.and tender. I keep 2 heavy duty ponchos in boat. They have snaps and tie downs on corners with hood.s. big enough to tie together and make a shelter. Great for sitting down also cover knees And keep feet dry . Wind break in boat. Cover seat and all. Have had for years.
Put hot coals on over lid. That's the idea. Bake in it. Dutch oven. Charcoal on lid. Or coals.
Add a big hunk of butter in the oven next time. You’ll love it. Beer buttered brats.

Joe, that lip on the lid of the Dutch oven is so you can pile coals on top of it to let you bake in the pot. They are so versitile. Cowboy Kent Rawlins is a great resource for that type of cooking. He's an old cookie that traveled on cattle drives.

Hey Joe maybe take a tiny meat thermometer with you when you may get grouse so you can cook it to the perfect temp no matter how you decide to cook it. It won’t add too much weight.

When I go out I use a solar powered battery bank just sit it the sun and it charge my devices up. We also use them when the power goes out too.
