How Nirvana Inspired The Batman

  • Check out my video essay where I discuss the 2022 Superhero movie, The Batman, and how it uses the classic Nirvana song, Something in the Way, to paint a picture of trauma and melancholy that are shared by troubled singer, Kurt Cobain, and the film's lead, Bruce Wayne, played here by Robert Pattinson.

Bruce is a direct reflection of Kurt, a reclusive figure who's in a constant state of struggle, who still didn't get past the trauma and found his real self in the batman. The self-destructive way of living associates the drugs Cobain used, to the nights Batman spent fighting crime as addictions to both, and something that drives them to lose themselves in this character they've created to cope with life.

As a creative artist working on any collaborative project, I’m always searching for that one idea that will click so I can only imagine how ecstatic Reeves must have felt when he made the connection to Nirvana. A connection that not only inspired but was the final cog that Reeves needed to set this whole motion forward with a new spin. To me, this inspiration (and the use of that song) was the key success to THE BATMAN because everyone could see how fitting this correlation was. Even those who are not familiar with Cobain found the comparison becoming; the song setting the perfect tone for its storytelling.
I love video essays that focuses on one particular element. Your analysis is thoughtful and articulated so is your editing. Thank-you for taking the time to make this video.

Great essay! Just wanted to add when you mentioned how Nirvana's empathy was overshadowed by hopelessness when fans heard about his death. I was only 5 when Kurt passed but I felt the exact thing when Chester of Linkin Park died. I was already drowning and his death felt like- oh so no matter how many times I fight bavk, depression can still defeat me? It was a dark time and I don't think this really makes any sense to this video but I wanted to share my thought.

When Batman looked at the boy, he was experiencing empathy. Empathy isn't confined to offering kindness to another as is suggested for a moment here... it's awareness of another's feelings.... in that moment, Batman struggled with his own feelings knowing what the child is going through. That is empathy. He may not have utilised that feeling to offer kindness or support, but he felt it and shared that moment of recognition.
Ultimately hope and despair are on the same spectrum. We may experience both... there is no absolute and no certainty.... and both are possible. Much like happiness and sadness. Life isn't about obtaining one and avoiding the other, if we have any chance of finding a bit of peace in between. Life should be about nurturing hope and connecting to the silence and peace between as best we can.

Amazing video about the Caped Crusader and Kurt Cobain. Whenever I hear 'Something in the Way', I somehow imagine an animated music video in the style of the 90's Batman cartoon that Kurt Cobain plays his song in the Batcave and the video ends with Bruce Wayne and Alfred watching Kurt's performance. Then, decades later, Bruce, with Terry and Ace from Batman Beyond, goes to Kurt Cobain's memorial park in Aberdeen,WA, as Warner Bros's and DC's tribute to the tragic, but beloved iconic singer of Nirvana. Who knows if WB and DC did that.

If you watch Montage of Heck it covers that the song was based on the time he lived below an underpass. I could feel an uplift at the end of the movie but hadn't noticed it was due to the songs manipulation. So the sequel will be Your Friendly Neighbourhood Batman 2 ?

i was a huge batman fan during the release of the movie, but i didnt watch it, during the wave of The Batman, Something in the way was used a lot in the batman edit videos and i saw them a lot, and i took a liking to something in the way, and then a year later, i was immersed in nirvana, knowing their discography and so on, then i decided to watch the batman because it finally was released on netflix, it was such an expensive dinner, watching and hearing something that pleases me really well.

Just a random thought I had seeing some of the cutting room floor footage from Unplugged; they could've released an entire double album with the songs that were cut from the television performance. I think I speak for all Nirvana fans when I ask....why didn't they do that!? They could've released the Unplugged album as is,and then released the full concert in a "double live" format a few years later, even. Have you heard what was cut!? It's really good! Especially their acoustic version of Lounge Act. What the hell,DGC!?

Imagine being a regular human, creating something that resonated with some people, dying, and then having your legacy forever portrayed thru the prism of whatever the fans wanted you to be. Look at how many people refer to him by his first name, as if they knew him, and attributing his words to their own lives. It's like his legacy is cemented in the very thing he didn't seem to like in the first place. The bitter irony.

Look I’m not saying this to attack you or your video so don’t take it that way. But if your gonna talk about Kurt’s death you need to add the fact that most people that was around him said he wasn’t suicidal. And that he may have been murdered. I could post a book on the reasons why I think he was murdered or he committed suicide a different way than the way they say he did.
