The part about the movie not ending with owning the popular kids or reaching the top but instead ending with just genuine connection got me. Now that I think about it, that’s such a good mature ending for a movie like this.

not only is this film one of the funniest but i love how empathetically it approaches loneliness - the characters are all looking for connection in their own way but it's mostly non-judgmental about the way that they try to find those connections. as someone from a big family and often felt quite lonely it meant a lot to see that play out on screen

One thing I love about this movie is that even though its in a small rural idaho town its still relatable to people around the world a lot like how The Breakfast Club is still relatable to kids today. Its essentially timeless

Don's "comeuppance" is always one of the more interesting he gets a heavy dosage of self awareness.

I just want to go back in time and enjoy this for the first time again

I love this movie. The offbeat humor and the quirky characters amuse me. And I identify with Napoleon quite a lot. I was always the weird kid. Good essay. I enjoyed it!

Why's it funny? I can answer that, because it's somewhat relatable to many of us. I've personally met people like Napoleon, he's that typical weirdo that's also a nerd and compulsive liar. Kip is just as if not even more relatable to many millennials today. You've got Rex who while some people may believe to be just some wack job is again relatable to some of us, either you have that one kid that thinks they can fight and then you have serious martial artists like me who has seen fake martial artists who act like or sometimes ever worse than Rex himself! The show is just so simple it's downright hilarious and the sad part is that it's realistic. The ironic part is that people don't find this film funny despite making fun of people who are exactly like the characters in this film all the time. Some people who have seen this movie are one of or some of the characters in this flick!!! And that's why it's funny period!!!

Man, that was an enjoyable video. Just subscribed. I'm glad you mentioned the underlying sadness of the movie. I was a weirdo for sure and it took me adopting a "fake it til you make it" attitude to finally appear somewhat at ease in my own skin. I'm still a very strange person and seeing someone like napoleon being incredibly bizarre is so cathartic. I chose a similar route to him, I still pursued my interests regardless of how it was viewed and I managed to actually find friends who gave a crap about the same things. Dang good review, captured all my thoughts in a nutshell 👏

Hated this film when it was released as an 18 year old, but recently decided to give it another crack as a 38 year old with my daughters. Absolutely brilliant film that had us laughing so much. Simple with wholesome themes of friendship and growing up with a strangely nostalgic soundtrack.

NPoleon dynamite, and Gregory’s Girls remind me of my teen years.

Great video! This movie came out the year I got married. Twenty years later my husband and I still quote it and have seen it I don't know how many times. I can never make quesadillas without yelling "dang QuesaDILLas" . 😂My parents, on the other hand, saw it once and couldn't understand why we love it so much. Maybe it's a generation thing. My mom said "I don't understand why he always looks like he's falling asleep standing up!" 😂

I watched this film recently with my 14 Yr old daughter and she really enjoyed it too. She's also an odd kid like I was at her age so she got the movie.

I remember 2004 when Napoleon Dynamite had just released, it was inescapable. I was in my awkward high school years at the time, so I hated seeing myself reflected back at me, but now I enjoy it for what it was. I think the distance helps.

I really do have some fond memories of this movie. But I will admit I do remember when I first saw it I didn’t like it at first because I thought it wasn’t that funny. But I was dumb and Young back then I was just too young and to full myself or even the ability to comprehend or pay attention to what the film is truly about. And it took me a long time to realize that the film didn’t need any raunchy adult humor to be funny. And back then when I was in school I wasn’t exactly like Napoleon I wasn’t geeky and awkward but I still had some insecurities. And there were times where I did feel out of place but my biggest strength with my personality and that’s why I ended up having a good amount of friends and that’s why I was also able to hang out with the popular group and all the cool kids. but there was one thing I did relate with Napoleon on it was basically not getting with the girl that I liked. Like when things didn’t work out when Napoleon took Trisha to the dance. And I also experienced some rejection from some girls and that was something I definitely related with Pedro on when summer basically rejected going to the dance with him. All and all looking back on the film after all these years it really is safe to say that it really is a well-made movie and it’s also just a really naturally funny movie without trying so hard to be funny. And yeah it really does do a great job capturing the adolescent years and the awkwardness of being somebody like Napoleon dynamite in high school. And that’s why it became such a cult classic because it’s so relevant and it’s relatability like there’s thousands of people out there that could relate to Napoleon.

This is one of my favorite movies ever. You did it justice with this video analysis. I’ll definitely be watching it again because of you

This is a wonderful video essay! I watched ND recently and I absolutely love it! The more I watched the film the more I began to understand it, and in turn I was able to really sympathize and empathize with Napoleon on a deep level. I see myself in him when I was still in school (even now). He's one of those characters who will always be dear to me. 💛

I remember renting this movie from Blockbuster and by BF and I didn't know what to intially think of it. We cought ourselves constantly quoting the movie and ended up buying the DVD.
