    Just what the heck am I anyways?! Well, we all know WHO I am. That glasses guy, right! But, what do I do, what am I, what the heck even is an optician? Well that's another 50 shades of gray (literally, as it varies from state to state!). This video only scratches the surface, so bear with me here as we talk a little bit about this! I want to dive more into this, but I have a collab in mind, and we'll revisit in the future. For now, enjoy a small dive into what an optician does in general, and why we're such awesome people that everyone loves!!

    How long does the optician certification program run? 6 months, 1-2 years?
    My employer is paying 100% of education up to a bachelors degree. I have two degrees already and have no interest in using them, also wanting into a different field, something not time consuming as I have my religious responsibilities (weekly meetings/field service) and work full-time. There are many family members including myself that depends on eyeglasses daily. Thought it would be interesting to learn more about the eyes and frames that best fit them.

    Do you have to go to school?
    -Maybe. Depends on where you live.
    Do you have to be certified?
    -Maybe. Depends on where you live.
    How long does it take to get good at it?
    -To feel comfortable? About 2yrs. There's a lot of knowledge needed to be able to aid your patients and advocate to the doctor on their behalf.

      So many maybe in this field for sure! 2 years you can be left to your own devices and be ok I would say, but there's so so so much to learn to become proficient in lens design and troubleshooting (particularly troubleshooting before trouble actually happens😁) I would also add it depends on your exposure to things within the field that aren't purely marketing can have a lot of affect on the rate of growth and skills 😁

    Really? An Optometrist is a Medical Doctor who takes care of routine eye care, an Ophthalmologist is also a Medical Doctor who can perform optometry duties but can also take care of more serious eye issues and surgery - an Optician is a technician who helps you choose and get fitted for glasses.

    • @ThatGlassesGuy03
      @ThatGlassesGuy03  Před 3 lety

      Mostly correct, as the video explains. Optician is not a technician, however, and in many states is a licensed professional largely specializing in the craft of eyewear and contacts. Abroad optician is largely closer to our designation optometrists here in the US even! 😁

    • @CodeByRaeYT

      @@ThatGlassesGuy03 You're correct, but I was mostly making the distinction to highlight the fact that optometrists and ophthalmologists are actual physicians who have endured nearly a decade of training as compared to an optician who can jump into the role on an OJT status in some places, your definition doesn't make this distinction very clear.

    Hi just wanna ask a question about pd
    Does it make difference if you measured and your face straight and facing the optician and if you sitting down and your and positioning your neck laterally and looking upward
    Hope you understand my question ??

    • @ThatGlassesGuy03
      @ThatGlassesGuy03  Před 4 lety +1

      Assuming no ocular muscle issues no, the left to right PD measure should be the same at all positions of gaze. It would drastically affect lens design if the fitting height were taken in this way, however.

      @ThatGlassesGuy03  Před 4 lety

      Just to add a bit more detail... if only the pd was measured in this way, it would not affect the outcome alone. If the fitting height of the lens was also measured in this way it could dramatically change the results and cause issues whether single vision or progressive. Sounds like you're working on getting this resolved with the office that did it now though :)
      Of course, with constant mask wear our eyes are all getting dry more and working harder all day too, so it could be a combination of factors in this case 😅. Anything from the initial rx was incorrect to lens design placement was bad ☠

    What lense would you recommend for -0.25 + 2.50 101 -0.50 +2.50 75 in a oakley marshal frame. My options are poly,trivex and 1.67. Thanks for any input

    • @ThatGlassesGuy03
      @ThatGlassesGuy03  Před 3 lety

      Contacts, and as far as backup glasses a different frame for starters, those 53 eye lenses are not going to do any favors. Myodisc lenses as well. That kind of rx... the -50 in particular is very unusual, and that big of a difference comes with a lot of issues in spectacles. Contacts truly are the best solution in terms of function and optics for such an rx.

    • @AG4runner
      @AG4runner Před 3 lety

      Sorry .50 lol

    • @ThatGlassesGuy03
      @ThatGlassesGuy03  Před 3 lety

      Ohhhh 0.25 and 0.50 for the first numbers? Standard plastic would actually serve you best with no upgraded fees here then :) trivex would be almost as thick to no benefit except lighter weight. Poly.. thinner but optics aren't as good. And on astigmstism.. I usually avoid it. I would suggest taking a look at my video about sizing though 😁 unless you have a large head i think you can find a better frame. Effectively working with a +2.00 here nothing is going to be awful, but best practices make the best results 😁

    • @AG4runner
      @AG4runner Před 3 lety

      @@ThatGlassesGuy03 yes, I have a decent size round/oval head. I currently have versaci 3277 in 55-17-140 but I hate the gloss nose Bridge as it slides down. I like the 55-56 lense on my face and wanted to go with something that stays on the face as I tend to sweat a lot at work. My lense on my current pair is poly but I hate peripheral view quality

    • @ThatGlassesGuy03
      @ThatGlassesGuy03  Před 3 lety +2

      Sorry missed this comment reply! This is a compound answer... The peripheral problems are compounded in poly but largely come from that cylinder power over 2 diopters. A high quality surface and advanced lens design algorithm in a specialized lens material like MR8+ would make noticeable improvements by both reducing unwanted off axis blur and chromatic aberration, but certainly a more expensive route. For frames look for something with nylon or rubber pad area as it helps some, but a proper adjustment in a good frame with enough clamping force at the side of the head works just as well (I've got an extremely oily nose, and I'm sure you've noticed i wear mostly acetate frames :) ).

    Does learning optician need alot of math? Cause im very bad at math

    • @ThatGlassesGuy03
      @ThatGlassesGuy03  Před 2 lety +1

      IT really depends how deep you go into it, and what aspects of opticianry interest you. Basic fitting and ordering involves minimal math skills, but basic addition and subtraction and a little division help with some aspects related to prescription lens fitting and thickness. The deeper you go from there, the more heavily math and calculations come into play.
